Sue’s cakes were and immediately knew we wanted to book her to make our wedding cake. I truly don’t think anything beats fresh fruit in a cake. Not only are her cakes moist and flavorful, but her design skills are immaculate! From the start, Sue was very easy to work with answering any questions or concerns that came up. With her years and years of experience, we trusted her completely to make the wedding cake of our dreams.
I can’t begin to explain just how gorgeous the design of our cake was. Sue went above and beyond with the floral design and we couldn’t have been happier with the end result. She absolutely nailed the vision we had for our cake and made it even more beautiful than we were anticipating! I can’t count the number of guests that made a point to mention how our cake was the most beautiful wedding cake they’ve ever seen. Sue is so very talented and we are blessed we stumbled upon her business. She truly created the wedding cake of our dreams! We will never forget it and will surely be ordering more cakes from Le Gateau in the future!

This started with a simple inquiry for a 3-4 tier wedding cake with flowers, in between naked cake and regular amount of frosting, and other dessert table options in addition to the cake.
The response I got: "Dear Amy, I create wedding cakes and pastry tables . I make mostly French pastries . I do not make naked cakes for anyone. To spend two hours making Italian meringue buttercream and butter costing over $5.0 a pound plus Grand Marnier or Valrhona white chocolate to flavor the buttercream am I going to ice then scrape it off the cake and throw it out!. If this is what you want then you will need to look for another baker. Best wishes, Sue"
I was genuinely shocked to receive such a message on a simple inquiry. I recommended that she explicitly state her very big feelings about what services she is unwilling to provide so that no future bride has to go through this process of upsetting her so much with a simple inquiry. I let her know that we would absolutely be looking elsewhere, per her advice.
But, Sue has more to say. She responds, "Dear Amy, I do state what I create and don’t create on the very first page of my website outlined in a Redbox so it can’t be missed. I am sorry you didn’t read it . Best regards I am sure you will find someone to make what you want."
At this point, I'm beyond disgusted with her unprofessional attitude. I saw the website. My inquiry stated something in between a naked cake and something simply covered in fondant. That specification is not addressed in her page regarding what items she deems as more appropriate for "picnics and children's parties" and not appropriate for a wedding (feel free to check her site - this is literally what it says). I, once again, explicitly told her - "We are no longer interested in your services. Future replies are no longer necessary, nor welcome."
Still, Sue isn't done. Her last message: "Dear Amy, if you had come to my shop I would have given you the same information plus more. My butter went from $90.00 a case to $178.90 a case. That is why I don’t scrape off my buttercream and throw it out. In the past few months two bakeries in town closed permanently. Leaving brides in the lurch without a cake and a refund. I helped out some of these brides with a cake better quality and design at a lower price. One main reason these and a couple of individual bakers quit lately was costs. So that is why it is stated on my website and why I also tell brides this same information when they come in for a free tasting. It is about educating why and how things are made so you can make an informed decision. Regards, Sue"

One of the most important elements on our wedding day was to have a cookie table full of family made cookies and other pastries. This is a strong tradition in my hometown however most venues in Columbus discussed they were not able to accommodate this request. We desperately searched for someone in the Columbus area who would be able to plate and display all our cookies. We did end up finding a vendor that was willing to do this however they wanted to charge over $2,000 (just to plate cookies). Feeling defeated, I knew we had to keep planning so my now husband found Le Gateau as a potential pastry chef for our cake. Upon going to Sue's pastry kitchen, we were blown away with her kind spirit, her amazing cake flavors, and the absolute love of her craft. We immediately knew she was the one to make our cake! We then started to discuss our desire to have a cookie table and how challenging this has been to find anyone willing to help with this. Sue, without any hesitation, said "I'll do it!" And the rest was history! Sue not only displayed an absolutely immaculate cookie table but this table was nearly 40 feet long! It was one of the most beautiful sights we have ever seen and nearly took my breath away. We were so grateful for her support and the support of her colleagues and friends to make this cookie table happen!
Whatever you do, please consider talking with Sue and always recognize she is an expert at her craft and will ensure your wedding cake is one you will never forget!

At our tasting, Sue gave us a number of cake and frosting samples to try, explaining the differences between each. This made me feel well informed and helped us to better decide our preferences. On our wedding day, our cake looked just as we had designed it, and was one of the most delicious desserts I've ever had! From the cake tasting experience to our wedding night, we had a great time selecting designs/flavors and eating delicious cake! We have been to a few weddings and have never enjoyed a wedding cake as much as we enjoyed Sue’s. We had a 3 tier round cake with different flavors for each level including Italian cream with fresh raspberry and chocolate with fresh raspberry. Both with wild berry buttercream icing. The flavors were amazing and did not taste ridiculously sweet as we've come to know American cakes to be. Sue was not only able to accommodate our requests but she also provided us with expert advice regarding the design and flavor pairings. In addition, we planned the wedding from out of town, and Sue was able to accommodate our tastings to include one tasting for us (bride & groom) during a short trip into town and later schedule a separate tasting for our parents.
Sue was prompt to respond to any calls and answered all the questions that we had throughout the entire wedding cake selection process. On the day of the wedding, the cake arrived on time and it looked great. The taste was out of this world. The flavors were natural with no artificial tastes. Truly, the fresh raspberries brought everything together. We had many guests come up to us after the wedding to compliment the cake and ask who was the mastermind behind it.
Our caterer did not leave us the anniversary cake (the top tier of the wedding cake) and as soon as Sue heard about this, she immediately offered to give us a small replacement so that we can enjoy cake for our first year anniversary. We are very thankful that Sue was able to be part of our big day and we highly recommend her for all your cake needs!

Our wedding planner recommended Sue - the sugar glass guru - and we are so glad she did! The cake was BEAUTIFUL - a real piece of art! The sugar glass sculptures on the piece were identical to the Chihuly, and nobody could believe they were edible! Sue. Her cakes were absolutely delicious and her decorating skills stunning. She is also the only person in town who made pulled sugar ribbons and flowers. We went with a flower on our cake that looked like it was made of hand-made glass from a hot-shop.
She was also willing to make a non-traditional, non-tiered wedding cake from a picture I had from a 1952 Louisville Courier Journal article my grandmother had saved for my mother when my mother was 3 years old. My mother never had the cake made and it was something I had seen all of my life. It was the only thing I knew I wanted for my wedding day if I ever married. After being told by other bakers it couldn't be done to the scale I wanted and after much discussion with Sue, Sue made it happen. It was exactly what I wanted in scale. I left the decorating mostly up to her other than asking for the sugar flower in colors used in my wedding party. She decorated the sides in an art-deco pattern from my engagement/wedding ring and she decorated the top to look like the lace on my wedding dress.
Besides being extremely happy with my cake visually, the two cake flavors she made were wonderful. All of my guests talked about how good they were. She made both an orange pound cake with a chocolate ganache filling and a lemon pound cake with fresh raspberry filling. For anyone reading this thinking of a heavy pound cake, these weren't. They were the lightest (not dense and dry) pound cakes I've ever had and were sumptuously rich. The leftovers even tasted good a week afterwards.
While this is not the least expensive cake in town (nor is it the most expensive), I think you would be hard-pressed to find a better cake. There may be many who can decorate a cake but Sue is a superb baker in addition to being an exceptional designer.
