We used Marguerite's Cakes for our wedding and groom's cakes. Our past experiences with them have been that the cakes are generally very good, and they are a local bakery. We wanted to support them and we knew we would get a good cake.
Our c...ake tasting consisted of six miniature cakes, and they were delicious. The owner's son talked with us while we sampled the cakes and asked what we wanted. We gave him some pictures, and he gave us a quote. It was quite expensive, but we were very impressed with the quality of the cakes. We chose our flavors, signed a contract, and paid a deposit. They even boxed up the remainder of the cake samples for us to take home, free of charge. Note that he can be a bit pushy, so if that bothers you, you may want to avoid.
The decorator in charge of our cakes contacted us about a week or so before the wedding to confirm flavors and colors, and ask about any last-minute changes. All seemed to be going well.
Our cakes were a standard three-tier wedding cake, and a groom's cake modeled after Mississippi State's Davis Wade Stadium. As you can see from the attached picture, the word "Mississippi" is misspelled on the cake. This would normally not be a big deal, but considering the groom's cake alone was several hundred dollars, and both cakes together were over $1200, we felt like there should be a bit more attention to detail. And as you can see from the picture, the general shape of the stadium is good, but there's not a lot of detail there.
In regards to the cake itself - we were told that some of the cake would be rice crispies instead of actual cake because of the complexity of the design. We were fine with this. As it turned out, only the field was actual cake, and the rest were rice crispies treats. This was pretty disappointing as well - we felt like we should be getting more cake than that.
The irritating part about all of this is the non-existent customer service after the fact. We returned the cake stand on the Monday following the wedding and asked to speak to someone about the cake. The young woman at the counter somewhat rudely informed us that the decorator that made our cake was not there that day, and suggested that I should call back another day. I did so, and the decorator was already gone for the day.
I called one final time and spoke to a decorator, but apparently not THE decorator that made our cakes. The woman took my information and informed me that the owner should call me back after the fourth of July holiday. This hasn't happened.
I finally was fed up with the lack of response, and posted a picture of the misspelling on the cake on their Facebook wall, and asked if everyone would ever get back with me in regards to the mistake. Marguerite's promptly deleted my comment, but did call and speak to my wife. The owner's attitude was awful. She said it was a $1500 cake that we only paid $600 for (apparently meaning we shouldn't expect a complete cake), and that an independent designer did the cake, not an in-house one (ditto). Absolutely terrible attitude and after-service.
It's tough to write this review because of the many good cakes we've received over the years from Marguerite's, but to have paid so much money and see something so sloppy, and get such awful service after the fact is unacceptable. They have lost an entire family of business, a family that generally purchased a cake for nearly every birthday gathering every year.
