I'm Michael Freas, a documentary wedding photographer based in Asheville, NC. I've been photographing weddings since 2016. My couples consistently say the same thing in their reviews: they forgot I was there, and got photos that looked exactly like how the day actually felt.

We found Michael Freas by Googling Pretty Place Chapel photographers, and we were immediately blown away by his talent, his style, and the breathtaking photos he had captured for other couples. From the very first inquiry, Michael was incredible. He responded the same day, shared full galleries from other Pretty Place Chapel couples, and spent the entire day communicating with me to help us choose a date that worked well for both him and us.
We basically let Michael pick our wedding date, and little did we know that would be the first of many decisions we would happily trust him with. Looking back, giving Michael full creative control was one of the best choices we made.
The day of our wedding was truly the best day of our lives, and so much of that is because of Michael. From well before dawn to well after dusk, he took on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure with us and turned it into something we will never forget. He was on time, prepared, thoughtful, calm, and somehow delivered in ways that completely surpassed every expectation we had. Just a wedding photographer? No way. Michael planned, guided, encouraged, organized, and executed our entire day in the most seamless and meaningful way.
Even though we eloped, Michael made us feel like we had everyone we needed right there with us. He brought such a steady, joyful presence, and by the end of the experience, he felt much more like a friend than just our photographer. And the photos… WOW. They are breathtaking, awe-capturing, emotional, and beyond anything we could have dreamed of. Michael stunned us with a huge sneak peek and then delivered our full gallery in under one month. photographer, we both went into it knowing that we are both incredibly awkward people when asked to pose. With this in mind, we started the big search - the one that everyone reminds you that will tell your stories for years. Enter finding Michael - his website mentioned candidness, and a documentary type of style. Two things that immediately caught our eye - not to mention looking through his previous work- which is just unbelievable!
Throughout the year leading up to the wedding, Michael was incredibly helpful. He answered any questions we had and offered super helpful suggestions when figuring out the flow of the day. One tidbit that I would recommend to any bride is work with your photographer to create that timeline - a tidbit from Michael. He also managed to have a blog post for every type of question I had (and I had a lot 😂).
A few weeks prior to the wedding, Michael met with us via zoom to go over the different elements of our days and to go over our family list (which was insanely helpful day of because we were able to knock those out)!
When our wedding day arrived, he was there early to get everything set up and his presence just put everyone at ease. It felt like someone who had been part of our family friends rather than a wedding vendor - which was another element that was important to us: good vibes!
Our wedding day and the pictures felt just like us - entertaining and full of laughter. We hiked through some trails for our first look, walked along a highway, and climbed rocks- which lead to nothing but new memories and lots of giggles. We both were really nervous about taking the posed pics but Michael put us in our natural element and just focused on capturing our story, which was a trend all throughout the day. None of us will ever forget the fact we forgot to tell him we had a 6 foot hoagie at the ceremony. We also had a blast using bubble guns for a photo op fake exit and learned there is such a thing as too many bubbles!
Within a day after the wedding, we had a sneak peek - and we generally could not believe how AMAZING our photos turned out. It’s still surreal that we could look that good in photos 😂 he captured exactly what we were hoping - us having the time of our life and starting our life together as husband and wife. We can’t wait to see the rest of the gallery!!

I found Michael on Instagram after going through TONS of photographers. As soon as I found his page, I knew I'd found the right guy. There's not a single photo in his portfolio that I don't love. I don't know how he does it, but he captured every single emotion of the day from me as the bride, to my husband (!!), to all our guests. I only have the preview photos (which he had to us by the NEXT MORNING - after taking like 10K photos the day before), but they are absolutely stunning. His editing style is EXACTLY what I was looking for. He doesn't zhuzh your photos up with the same boring filters. His photos feel real and rich.

Michael is knowledgeable of the North Carolina area, of course photography and overall a great guy to interact with. hael’s photos, he was the one I wanted to capture our special day! From day one he was so good at communicating with us and making sure we would get what we wanted. One thing that is important to us is communication, one thing other vendors weren’t doing, but Michael did. He was on top of our timeline, and made sure we met and felt comfortable with him well before our wedding day. Michael kept us up to date with how everything would go, and communicated well with our wedding planner and other vendors. He was fun to work with and has a very energetic personality. When we arrived he had a pop up tent and bags to help carry the suit and dress and change out on the trail. He also drove us there and back. Michael Freas is down to earth and easy going. He’s dedicated and passionate about what he does, which is clearly reflected in his photos. A great photographer that really wants to get to know you on a personal level, so that he understands what type of photos you want. Michael really went above and beyond to make sure our photos came out absolutely spectacular, even to the point of yelling to a boat captain to turn his sail boat for an amazing photo (see photo below). nd I became engaged, I knew that in planning any wedding, the photographer was going to be one of the most important decisions we would make for our wedding. Planning a dream wedding without the fairytale photos is absolutely pointless. Moreover, I knew that I didn’t want the regurgitated typical staged poses that have been the norm for the last century. I wanted someone to capture the moments, the emotions, the art. Michael is not only an amazing photographer, but his work tells the story in the most unobtrusive and artistic way.
I stalked Michael’s work having found him on Instagram while looking for a photographer that knew my venue and took the best photos, by the advice of one of my best friends, and bridesmaid, who is also an amazing photographer. She said I needed someone that knew the ins and outs of the venue, the lighting, etc… She was right, but even knowing how important this all was, I was intimidated by the cost. Michael instantly scoffed at my resistance and worked with me to make it happen within my budget. This was only the start.
Who would have known, at that time, that COVID-19, was going to be the act of god, that I could never have planned for? Needless to say, three weeks before our wedding we were postponed. Michael not only worked with me to change the date without penalizing me, but also called a couple vendors, along with my amazing planner, to get everyone on board. Michael and I continued to communicate through the entire postponement, becoming friends impassioned by the many politics surrounding the whole pandemic.
On the day of, Michael showed up true to form, full of energy. He is like that friend you haven’t seen in years, but you pick right up where you left off like you never missed a day. work with. I hate super posed photos and wanted our portraits to really be "us," not cookie-cutter or look like stock photos. After speaking with him we definitely knew we made the right choice. Since we were coming in from out of town Michael offered to meet up with us the day before our wedding and scout the perfect locations for our ceremony and photos in the Key West Garden Club. He was funny and very down to earth, making us feel very comfortable. The day of our wedding he timed our final photos perfect and caught the incredible Key West sunset I had hoped and dreamed would be the backdrop of our portraits. Go into the experience with ideas around what you want and Michael will make sure it all happens. We met several times leading up to the wedding via skype which was a great way to stay connected. On the day of, he was everywhere! He captured the MOST AMAZING first look pictures and puts such quality in his work. We haven't seen everything yet, but what we have seen we are obsessed with. At the wedding, everywhere I turned around he was there capturing the moment, so we were able to just be us and enjoy that night and he captured everything we were experiencing. We hired him after our wedding planner confirmed he was great and easy to work with, as we were trying to assemble a team that would work well together and make things less stressful for us. All in all, Mike was an absolute pleasure to work with. The pre-wedding phone call was such a nice touch to be able to express what our expectations were for the big day and get to know each other since we were unable to meet in person before the wedding weekend. Mike gave us some great advice and ensured everything would be great as long as we remembered what this day was all about. If we were happy, the guests were going to be happy and that is what the photographs would reflect. Mike and his 2nd photographer Filip shot both our welcome party and the wedding day and were fantastic the entire time. We had a large guest list (300 people) so getting to know the guests a bit the night before made it easy for them to jump right in on the day of the wedding. They made us and our guests feel comfortable, which was really important to us. We were lucky to have incredible weather with a ridiculous sunset, and watching Mike geek out over the pictures they were capturing was really fun to see- and the photos did not disappoint! They managed to capture every important moment of the weekend and yet there were times I never even knew they were there. If you are looking for a great, approachable photographer who understands the Keys and how to work with a large, at times rowdy group, Mike is your guy!
