What an amazing place! It is rustic with a charming flair! The views, the grounds and the hosts, Julie and Frank were perfect and made our day more than we could have thought possible! The Farmhouse is gorgeous and a great place for our friends to stay on site with us. Our suite was magical waking up to seeing Sunday River mountain right in front of us! Walk to the river was perfect for those who wanted to swim. I could go on and on! We are so blessed that we were able to have our wedding here! To our hosts, thank you from the bottom of our hearts , we felt from the first time we met to the wedding day that there was a great connection!
Good luck on the next chapter and new adventures!
Julie was very attentive. I had zero worrying the day of she took care of everything. All my guests were extremely overwhelmed with how beautiful the venue itself was. Such a great environment to become one in.
Great venue, great owners!
Our daughter's wedding has beautiful memories because of many reasons and Julie and Frank are two of those reasons. Julie and Frank were welcoming hosts before during and after the wedding weekend. They provided a beautifully manicured yard that looked amazing in my daughter's wedding pictures, a farmhouse and lodge that are gorgeous and clean with everything needed for a cookout or just baking quiche and muffins in the oven for the bridal party on the wedding day. Julie and Frank work tirelessly making sure parking for wedding guests is safe and secure, Julie is amazing at decorating/creativity for setting up the wedding tent and taking into consideration the bride and grooms taste and older guests with some restrictions. Julie and Frank are constantly walking around making sure guests are comfortable and asking if they need anything. Mountain House on Sunday River is not a motel ball room, it's Julie and Franks home that provides warmth and a sense of belonging...home sweet home is that feeling you get! That isn't something you get at a motel. All of our guests were happy and felt relaxed because of the atmosphere that was provided. We have four children and I hope my other three choose Mountain House on Sunday River as their wedding venue like their older sister did. Thank you Julie and Frank. You certainly made a once in a lifetime event unforgettable to all of us!!
Mountain House on Sunday River is an absolute gem tucked away and surrounded by the beautiful landscape of inland Maine. If you're looking for a venue that affords you privacy and at the same time has amenities and activities just a short distance away (e.g., restaurants, grocers, kayaking, hiking), this venue may be the perfect fit for you. This would be a beautiful venue in other seasons and we had the pleasure of experiencing Mountain House during the summer. We had breathtaking views of mountains, trees, expansive fields, and rivers running with cool water. The atmosphere was tranquil and we all felt invigorated. If that's not enough to sell you on this venue, just wait until I talk about the venue hosts, Julie and Frank!
We had selected this venue sight unseen based off of an initial phone conversation with Julie during which she answered all of our questions with detail and thoughtful thoroughness. The reviews also speak to just how personable and professional Julie and Frank are. They build relationships with their patrons and you can tell that they are genuine in their desire to help make each wedding a dream.
Also, they have great working relationships with many vendors and they will recommend to you the vendors that will meet your needs. My husband and I had a very small wedding group, just 13 altogether, so we ended up not needing many of the full services you may need at a larger wedding (e.g., bar, caterer, DJ). Julie recommended local restaurants that were unbelievably delicious (but actually very believable, because Julie is awesome like that).
Our wedding group stayed on property in both the Farmhouse and Suite. The accommodations were clean and beautifully furnished with a simple elegance appropriate to the surrounding environment.
Julie and Frank were always available and willing to help in any way they could to make the wedding day go smoothly. We had our ceremony outside in the Pine Cathedral. With a combination of good planning on our end, attention to detail and planning on Julie and Frank's end, and the universe giving us the most beautiful weather (and a glimpse of the Milky Way at night!), the day of the ceremony was even better than we could have imagined (and, trust me, we imagined it to be perfect).
I cannot recommend this venue enough. Of course, it may not be for everyone, but if you are looking for a meaningful connection with nature, your loved ones, and a kind and professional bond with your venue hosts, I strongly recommend giving Julie a call.
The Mountain House on Sunday River was the perfect location for our daughter's June wedding. From the accommodations to the stunning views, it was everything we imagined and hoped for when we selected the venue sight unseen. My daughter Emily and her fiance' Oden decided to get married in Maine as it is where we are from and spend time each summer. It was important to them that we have a small gathering with family and close friends and most of them live in Maine. Emily found The Mountain House on The Knot and was drawn to it given the ability to house the wedding party and close family friends throughout the weekend. There was no doubt that the location would be ideal, but what truly convinced us to plan a Maine wedding while living in Minnesota was the overwhelmingly positive reviews previous guests had posted. Not only were the reviews positive, but many were from people in a similar situation, planning a destination wedding. I have to say, the kind comments about Frank and Julie (the owners), could not have been more accurate in my experience.
From the first time I spoke with Julie, I knew she was detail oriented like me and I trusted that she would take care of us. Throughout the planning process, which included a Covid rescheduled date, Julie assured us that everything would be taken care of... and it was with kindness, timeliness, and understanding. One thing that was particularly helpful was the vendor list she provided with vendors who she could confidently recommend. Again, we trusted Julie's experience, and we booked our vendors very quickly. I really appreciated the vendor list as someone who lives out of state because choices can be very overwhelming. With some additional conversations with the chosen vendors, we were able to build a team of professionals that we knew would take care of us.
When we arrived at The Mountain House, the property was immaculate and just as pictured on their site. We were able to greet each of our guests and enjoy their company without worrying about anything as Julie and Frank were hard at work getting everything set up for the big event. What I really appreciated was their relationships with each vendor. I cannot tell you how nice it was to have Julie tell me things about each vendor as the timeline began and how it kept me calm throughout this weekend. On the day of the wedding, everything was beautiful, all of the vendors delivered quality beyond our expectations. Let me tell you, the caterer they use is phenomenal and every one of our guests could not say enough about the stuffed haddock and prime rib that was served.
In summary, The Mountain House at Sunday River will deliver the destination of your dreams and the dream team to make it a reality. As the mother of the bride, I was busy taking care of details like moms do, but I knew I had Julie and her team right behind me every step of the way. When the wedding was over, my friends and family asked Julie and Frank join us around the fire as we shared our favorite memories from the weekend. They were so professional and courteous, and at the end of the day, they were friends who were part of one of the most memorable days for our family. Thank you so much for all of the hard work you put into bringing our dreams to life.

Mountain House on Sunday River is a beautiful venue and a good fit for any couple that wants a laid back feel but still wants the support a traditional venue can offer. Julie is very responsive to questions and concerns, which was especially helpful as we needed to postpone our wedding due to covid. Our wedding weekend was absolutely lovely and so fun and we know that was largely in-part due to Julie's commitment to customer service and making the magic happen in the background. Thanks for having us and our family for such a memorable weekend!
To keep it simple... Julie and Frank and the Mountain House are awesome! Julie and frank were always there with anything we needed. They were available for questions through the whole process and when we arrived they made sure we had everything we needed and were taken care of. My wife and I weren’t even sure if we would be able to have the wedding this year with Covid-19 going on, but Julie and frank stepped up and took extra precautions to make sure that everyone was safe. As for the Mountain House it has everything you could dream of. We were able to house some family and our entire wedding party in a gorgeous farmhouse and lodge right on site. We had 3 amazing places to hold our ceremony. We ended up going with the field with the mountains in the background and it didn’t disappoint. I could go on and on about how amazing Julie and Frank are and how perfect the mountain house is. I couldn’t picture having our special day anywhere else and I can’t thank Julie, Frank and the Mountain House enough for everything they did for us. I would highly recommend to any couple getting married to check it out.
We found out about the Mountain House at a local dog park and I’m SO happy we did. Julie and Frank have been the best at communicating with us and have made the process of planning a wedding so much fun and not stressful. I ask Julie silly questions every week and she always gets back to me promptly and with a happy attitude. They are passionate about what they do and I am so excited to continue to work with them up until the big day. Highly recommend- you won’t regret it!
This experience was amazing- we got married during the Covid pandemic, Julie an Frank were so accommodating from the very start. They were always so easy to talk to an with all of the different questions that we had. The venue itself is breathtaking from the moment you arrive- there are so many different options at the Mountain House No matter what your style they are able to accommodate.
One of the things I truly loved was being able to have our family as well as our wedding party stay on site it made for great memories an great laughs.
I truly can’t Thank Frank an Julie enough for making our Wedding Day so amazing, they truly are what makes the Mountain House stand out from any other venue.
This perfect venue has so much to offer and two incredible owners that are there to help you the entire way. This is the type of place where anything you dream of can come true and Julie and Frank are ready to make it happen. I highly recommend the Mountain House on Sunday River to all couples.
My husband, Greg, and I are about 5 months into marriage and we continue to hear nothing but wonderful things from our guests. Julie and Frank are so inviting and were the key to keeping my sanity. I can't thank them enough for everything Julie did to make sure I wouldn't feel any stress. We live in Texas and planning a wedding on the other side of the country was definitely mounting on me. But as soon as we met them it was obvious they were the people for us. Julie made sure that I knew who was in the area that could help us from the caterer, bakers, officiants, where we could get our license and when, the list goes on and on. She thought of EVERYTHING even after reception donuts and hot apple cider to keep my side of the family's southern blood warm.
The venue is absolutely gorgeous. We were married in the Pine Cathedral but all of the spaces are beautiful. The Pine Cathedral was perfect. It was nice and cozy and gave my dad and me a nice walk to the ceremony from the lodge.
I stayed in the lodge with my side of the wedding party the night before and it was perfect for finishing the last of my DIY flowers. Greg and his wedding party stayed in the farmhouse and Greg continuously raves about the office. He says it was the perfect place to think and get together with the groomsmen.
I can't say enough wonderful things about Mountain House, Julie, and Frank. Thank y'all so much for everything y'all did. Our guests stilI talk about your hospitality.
I was introduced to the Mountain House in 2016, when I attended a wedding. It rained, but the event was amazing because of the venue and planning. I remember being so impressed and thinking, this is where I want to get married.
Fast forward 2 years and my own engagement, I knew exactly where I wanted to take my fiancé. Julie and her team were very accommodating and gave us a tour in the dead of winter. I was so pleased when my fiancé said he felt the same way about this place. Right from the beginning, Julie helped us plan our wedding by talking about areas where the ceremony could take place (there’s multiple options), recommending vendors, recommending set-ups for decorations and guiding us on what we needed to organize. I honestly, do not think we could have done this without her.
My wedding day was a stunning and sunny Fall day in October and we got married in the field with Sunday River (the mountain that my fiancé and I ski on every winter) in the background. It was so magical. I look at my pictures and I am still in awe. Also, the area where the reception was held is very spacious. I had 110 people and we were able to have everything (including the buffet, DJ, dance floor and dessert table) under the tent with plenty of room. My friends and family love to dance, so I was so happy to see that we had more than enough room to dance.
Overall, this venue has a lot to offer. The location is stunning, there are photo opportunities both during the day (mountains, covered bridge) and at night (twinkling apple trees), there are on-site accommodations that are very comfortable and Julie and her team are incredibly helpful. I wish I could go back and enjoy my wedding day all over again.
Everything we needed for a perfect family gathering was in place. Fylly equipped kitchen allowed us to enjoy meals at home. Lots af room to gather in the open floor plan dining and living room.
We had our wedding at the Mountain House during peak foliage in fall 2019 and it was amazing! I couldn’t imagine a more perfect wedding. Julie and frank went out of their way to make our day special. I would highly recommend this as a wedding venue.
We cannot say enough about how wonderful our experience here was! From the beginning Ms. Julie was thoughtful, helpful, and full of enthusiasm! My husband and I are military and thus had very strange schedules, but Ms. Julie worked with us and made planning an out of town marriage completely stress free.
The venue is gorgeous; the pictures do not do it justice! When we first arrived and I saw the lodge, house, and the lights in the apple trees I actually cried with happiness! Both houses are bigger than you think, and the instant you walk in they feel like home. We were able to comfortably have our immediate family spend the wedding weekend with us!
The barn is lovely and rustic, with plenty of room for dancing! Ms. Julie worked with us and got us a slightly larger tent to help with our numbers (at no extra charge!) and it was very high quality. It rained during the reception, but we were all nice and dry!
We had our ceremony in the Pine Cathedral, and it was so beautiful I cried. It is set into the trees enough to provide a lovely atmosphere, while at the same time close enough to the house and barn that you don't have to walk a long way!
The day of, Ms. Julie and Mr. Frank were absolutely AMAZING! They helped coordinate everything and saw that everything was setup perfectly; literally stress-free. During the reception they even went around to the tables and helped show how to properly crack a lobster and eat steamers!
Their list of suggested vendors was fantastic, and Ms. Julie even personally recommended a couple of people. Each person we contacted, they knew Ms. Julie and Mr. Frank, and had worked with them before and knew the venue by heart! Because of their input, we had a wonderful DJ who was the life of the party, a baker who's cake was LITERALLY the best cake we've ever tasted, and a world-class florist who made my dream bouquet come to life! Ms. Julie truly knows her craft!
My husband and I came to her with a budget, and she worked very hard to ensure that we stayed within it, and unlike other vendors I have worked with before, was not pushy what-so-ever. She would make informed suggestions, but always respected whatever decisions we made. She is also personable and very easy to talk to! We chatted via email, text, and phone call - whatever it took to figure out the big day!
My pastor told me that I was the "chilliest" bride he had ever married. I believe that was in part due to Ms. Julie and Mr. Frank's dedication, master planning, and their genuine caring that we enjoy our big day. They went out of their way and walked the extra mile to ensure that we thoroughly enjoyed our time there, and because of their hard work, we have a weekend that we will treasure for the rest of our lives. We fully plan to return one day for some skiing, or just to enjoy an anniversary at the place where our lives together started!
My wife and I had a great experience at the Mountain House. The owners, Julie and Frank, were easy to work with and made the whole process fun. Julie made a lot of recommendations and made planning everything much easier than it would have been otherwise. Highly recommend!
We had the BEST experience at the Mountain House! Julie and Frank went above and beyond to make sure our day was perfect. Part of the venue cost is getting Julie as your day of event coordinator, and it was so worth it! She will do everything to ensure the bride and groom have their dream wedding. It has been a little over a month since our wedding and people are still talking about how amazing the venue was and how awesome the day was! Julie will also make recommendations on DJs, rental companies, etc. and makes it so easy for the bride and groom. We can’t say enough about our experience.
The Mountain House was a fantastic venue for our wedding! Julie and Frank were amazing and really helped to coordinate for two people that had no idea what we were doing.
The lodging was comfy and there was plenty of room so that nobody felt claustrophobic. The study in the farmhouse was particularly nice for me; it was the perfect place to convene with my groomsmen the night before the ceremony to finish writing my vows and the officiant's portion of the ceremony. The decor is great, not to mention the outdoor spaces and all the natural beauty and scenic views around the grounds. The Pine Cathedral was our chosen site for the ceremony, and it was lovely even without any extra decor. The next morning we came outside and found a perfect set of moose tracks through the altar space!
Our wedding was pretty small since it was a destination wedding with about half of those invited being from Texas, but it never felt like there was too much space. At the same time, it felt like we could have easily had triple the people there without it feeling crowded at all. The way everything is so well planned out and put together between the deck, the barn, the fire pit, and even the bathrooms just made everything perfect for the reception after the ceremony.
I think that two things stood out most to me about the Mountain House and our experience: the first was the absolutely gorgeous scenery of the mountains and woods of western Maine. We had our wedding in early-mid May, so not everything was green and lush yet but the views were still breathtaking. I must've walked down to the river across the field a half-dozen times while I was there just to enjoy the scenery. Our photographer had even come up the day before the wedding and spent it driving around the area getting great photos of the scenery.
The second thing that stood out most was the help that Julie and Frank provided us with in coordinating everything. Between the catering and equipment rentals and everything else that went into preparing the wedding and reception, there was no way either my wife nor I would have been able to actually focus on the "getting married" part of the weekend without Julie's help. The only time I spoke to a vendor after we arrived was when I told the chef how good his prime rib was; Julie handled everything concerning vendor arrival, setup, breakdown, etc. and it really made the weekend a breeze from a coordination standpoint.
Since the wedding itself was early and the reception was going to run until late, Julie had the idea to get doughnuts and cider from a local orchard so our guests could have an evening nosh; both were delicious and everyone raved about them. Did I mention that said orchard is owned by Stephen King? Seriously, I can't say enough about how great Julie and Frank were.
Our wedding was as perfect as any could be. The ceremony was beautiful, the reception was joyous, everyone had a great time, and the Mountain House on Sunday River made it all possible. If you're looking for a beautiful outdoor venue in Maine with great people to work with, this is your place.
Mountain House on Sunday River is the most Beautiful place for a wedding. The owners Julie and Frank go above and beyond making the day special. They treat us like family which makes everyday we spend there more memorable. Every thing was perfect...music,food and the Beautiful tent in all its splendor!
I can't wait to have my sons wedding there and maybe
my family reunion. Once again thank you Julie and Frank!!
The Mountain House on Sunday River has so many options for a wedding. It can be very elegant and rustic all at the same time. As was the wedding that I had attended to. The Pine Tree Cathedral was designed by the owner, they cut pine trees for seating, nicely added touch. After the wedding the view this property has for the perfect pictures is limitless. From the covered bridge to the ski lift. The reception area is very large on a wooded deck and if you choose a tent gives it a nice added touch, definitely would recommend it. There is a 1/2 a barn for a dance floor, dj, band, whatever you choose. And at night the lighting that surrounds the grounds is breathtaking. Then there is the living space, the loft is my favorite. there is room for everyone! If I were to do it all again this would be the place where I would go. The owners are very kind and helpful. You can tell that they love what they do and they can help make your wedding venue everything that you could imagine because of the passion they have for your special day.
Wonderful day, wonderful place!! Thank you Julie and Frank!!
This was a beautiful venue for my sister's wedding! The view is spectacular, especially during peak foliage. The reception was also lovely. The whole venue is perfect rustic chic. I particularly loved the open barn where the bar is housed. Perfect for a fall Maine wedding. We stayed overnight on site in the red house, which was perfect. It's an older house, but it was so nice to be able to stay right there, and it had everything we needed, plus amazing mountain views :).
We had the perfect wedding at the Mountain House on Sunday River! The opportunity to make the ceremony and reception so personalized to us was key to the success. The Mountain House allows you to do this. We started with a list of vendors from Frank and Julie and every decision after that was easy and relatively stress free! The venue itself allows for an exceptional night and fantastic views for the ceremony!
The Mountain House was a stunning venue with first rate support from the staff (especially Julie and Frank)! We had a fantastic wedding and reception. The planning support from Julie and Frank were spot on and made for a beautiful wedding and reception - it was a perfect weekend! Many thanks to Julie and Frank at the Mountain House on Sunday River!
The Mountain House gave us a dream wedding beyond anything we could have imagined. The scenery was spectacular and the grounds were beautifully decorated and lit at night. We were stunned at how perfectly our "rustic chic" vision was realized. The open air barn, patio, and tent platform provided the perfect combination of spaces for a spectacular reception that comfortably accommodated ~175 guests. We had countless guests tell us that this was by far the best wedding they've ever been to.
And Julie and Frank were fantastic to work with - true experts at their craft. They were quick to respond, meticulous with keeping track of details, and so flexible to allow customization of their space. This allowed us to be creative and personalize many details, which was so much fun! As the day-of coordinator, Julie did a fantastic job ensuring that the day flowed smoothly. We were blissfully unaware of any work going on behind the scenes and only saw the final product, which was everything we'd hoped for and more. It is clear that Julie and Frank care deeply about each and every couple who chooses their beautiful venue, and they are genuinely excited to be part of such an important milestone. We HIGHLY recommend the Mountain House to anyone looking for a beautiful, personal, and insanely FUN Maine wedding.
What stood out the most was the timely communication. My husband and I live out of state so everything was done over the phone or by email. Whenever I emailed Julie, she was always there with a response the same day! They also have fantastic vendor suggestions and can help you pick everything from a cake to alcohol to decorations. It couldn’t have been easier! The property is gorgeous and very well kept. Frank sprayed for bugs which really kept the area pleasant. You will not be sorry choosing this place for your wedding!
Julie and Frank were instrumental in making our daughter's wedding on October 13, 2018 a perfect day to remember always. When we first contacted them, Julie and Frank were excited, responsive, and so willing to offer creative options for customizing the day in any way we wanted! The fall at The Mountain House on Sunday River is exceptionally beautiful, with the fall foliage in full bloom. The meadow, overlooking Sunday River, was the perfect spot for the ceremony, with the mountain awash in a sea of reds, oranges and yellows. Julie was our "Day of...." coordinator as well, and we felt relieved knowing that she would take care of every detail, thus eliminating some of the wedding "stress." We are very particular about details, and though we must have driven Julie crazy with such attention to these details, she never showed any irritation with our questions, suggestions, or worries as we planned a "mountain chic" wedding. Instead, she assured us that all would be done exactly as we asked, and it was!!! On the day of the wedding, it rained on and off several times before the ceremony. After each shower, Frank dutifully went to the meadow and wiped 160 chairs dry for our guests. Finally, just as the hour approached, the clouds moved away and the setting was magical- blue sky and puffy white clouds just as we had hoped! Julie and Frank took care of every detail no matter how small or insignificant, and opened their venue, including two homes for our guests, for the most fun weekend. We couldn't have been happier with the venue or with the coordination and assistance of Julie and Frank. It was a weekend we'll never forget and we highly recommend The Mountain House if you're looking for a beautiful outdoor setting for your wedding. You won't be disappointed!
The Mountain House was everything we hoped for and more. My wife and I were married on 10.7.17 in the field across the street and it was an unforgettable experience. The property is amazing, with great accommodations for both wedding parties, as well as a beautiful venue layout that our guests were able to explore, dance and celebrate. More importantly, I cannot describe how awesome and helpful Frank and Julie were. They took care of everything and made the time leading up to the main event and the day of completely painless. You guys were great and we look forward to spending time with you in the future. Everyone had an unbelievable weekend and we wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
Best,
Justin
The perfect venue!!! If you are looking for boho rustic chic then look no further !julie and frank were wonderful to work with and made the entire experience perfect !
I cannot say enough amazing things about this venue and it's owners. This location is absolutely breathtaking, pictures absolutely don't do it justice. Julie and Frank have gone above and beyond to make sure everything falls into its perfect place for my special day. I highly recommend Mountain House on Sunday River for a great wedding weekend.
Julie and Frank of the Mountain House were wonderful to work with. We had the most memorable weekend of our lives! The setting, views and accommodations are unmatched. Many of our guests stated it was the "best wedding ever!!"
We just had our wedding at the Mountain House this past weekend and it was perfect. It was a gorgeous fall setting and our guests were raving about how beautiful the property was. The best part about it was that was had 40 of our closest family and friends stay on the property and right up the street in a rental on Douglass Rd, so it was a 3 day long reunion, rather than just a wedding where you make quick small talk and move on. It was also really convenient having shuttles back and forth to the Grand Summit hotel. A lot of our family stayed there and loved running into each other at the hotel rather than being spread out. One thing worth noting (and the owners Julie and Frank don't make this a secret when you meet them) is that the venue can be as DIY as you'd like, so if you're not someone who likes managing details, you'll want to hire a wedding planner (conveniently, Julie offers wedding planning packages). Overall, Mountain House was the perfect place to have our wedding and we're so happy we chose it!
There is so much to say, but short and simple is probably best. Our Wedding at the Mountain House this August with Julie was absolutely perfect! The property and site were unbelievably breathtaking. The farmhouse and lodge accommodations were clean. comfortable and prefect for our entire wedding party guests. It was so nice to be on-site the entire weekend with our party and so close for all the events. We never left the property the entire weekend. We had our lobster bake rehearsal dinner on site, highly recommended. The wedding catering and food was delicious and far exceeded our expectations for any wedding we've been to. I dream about those wild mushroom pesto roasted butternut raviolis and garlic roasted potatoes. I had the pleasure of trying a bite of everything we ordered for entrees and all were perfect. They worked so well to accomodate dietary needs. The set-up of everything was just stunning. The dancing on the breeze barn deck was welcoming for all. The guest were all raving about the food and property. Julie was a huge help from start to finish and we planned our weeding in 4-months from where we reside in North Carolina today not having seen it in person until that weekend. I was in love with everything the minute we drove up to it and had a huge smile on my face. We couldn't have done it without Julie. The fire pit was a lovely gathering place. The corn-hole kept people busy. The pine forest was amazing for our ceremony with the mid afternoon sunlight. There were so many wonderful places to take photos on sight with great lighting, a photographers dream. My only disappointment was how quickly the weened and events went by. I never wanted them to end. Perfect in every single way! Take time to breath it all in. How we got so lucky to have the most amazing wedding there during prime wedding season in short notice was a true blessing we are so grateful for. I want to relive it all over again.
Our daughter had her wedding at the Mountain House on Sunday River in September and it was absolutely beautiful.
The mountains were breathtaking and everything at the venue site was so well-kept. Julie and Frank were extremely helpful and made everything go so smoothly.
The weekend was unforgettable and I would recommend this venue to anyone!
Our wedding at the Mountain House on Sunday River was nothing short of amazing.
Brett and I were unable to view the venue in person before booking so we needed to rely on the Mountain House website and reviews. Once we actually saw the venue, we were blown away. The property is breathtaking from the mountains to the onsite apple trees.
During our venue search, we were looking for a venue that our bridesmaids and groomsmen were able to stay on site during the wedding weekend. The Mountain House was a perfect fit. Both houses on the property are well cared for and set up perfectly for socializing.
The Mountain House on Sunday River is beautiful but what makes the experience so special is Julie. Both Julie and Frank made everything so easy and seamless. Julie was always responsive and helped guide me on the many decisions needed during the wedding planning process.
Brett and I, along with all of our friends and family, had a weekend we will never forget!!!
I am writing this review on behalf of both my now wife and I. We wanted to find a wedding location that was both rural and which offered an opportunity for both of our families to spend some time together in the days running up to the wedding itself. Mountain House was perfect for us in so many ways.
The two lodges on the property allowed our two families to stay near to each other and we had a few days together before the wedding itself. We hiked and went "tubing" as a huge group and everyone had a great time.
The property is ideal for kids and they were able to play outside in a very safe way, without parents needing to worry unduly about their safety.
We got married outside in July in the "Pine Cathedral" which was so magical, so many of our guests commented on how beautiful the setting was.
The cocktail hour, reception, and dancing was all great too. We had 85 guests and could easily have imagined 75 or 150 fitting well into the space.
Julie was fantastic to work with, she was very available to us and answered many of our questions. She put us in touch with local vendors, who without exception, we loved - the photographer, the cake vendor, florist, DJ, caterer, etc.
Planning a wedding is such a huge undertaking and Julie made our lives a lot easier. Julie had an eye for details and made the day itself go very smoothly.
Without reservation we recommend this site for a wedding!!!
Danielle and Alistair
I do not have enough kind words about Julie and Frank or the amazing home-like atmosphere they have built and shared with so many to make for the ultimate wedding day/weekend. My husband and I went up to the Mountain House when I was 9 months pregnant just to take a look at one of the many venues we were considering for our big day. From the moment we pulled into the driveway and saw Frank drive up on his ATV, we were sold. They are such a loving, welcoming couple, but they have also helped plan and be a part of so many weddings at this point, that they have amazing input to offer about how to utilize their space to make it personal and affordable!
After we had our son, we thought long and hard and decided we weren't going to do the "big day celebration" and abandoned our dream day up at the Mountain House…. Julie stood behind me in my decision and that meant the world to me! When you're looking for a wedding venue, as a bride, you want to know you're being practical with your money while also getting your "dream day". For all of those brides out there considering this venue who might be a little hesitant about booking…. these people are the real deal. They are in this business for the right reasons. They genuinely believe in the long haul love story, not just the one day celebration… what they have to offer is one of the most beautiful venues you can imagine in the northeast with flexibility to plan a wedding your way, and guidance to help you plan a day (or weekend) to really celebrate the reason you're getting married in the first place! I HIGHLY recommend Julie and Frank and the Mountain House - and trust me, while they really are beautiful, the pictures online don't do it justice - you have to go see this place in person!
My fiance and I are not getting married at Mountain House on Sunday River due to budget constraints. I initially reached out to Julie at Mountain House in the summer of 2016 to discuss pricing and possibly schedule a tour. Julie and I had a pleasant conversation via email and determined that Mountain House would not be a great fit due to the limited budget that my fiance and I are working with.
Since that initial exchange, I have received at least 3, if not more, unsolicited emails from Julie asking me if and when I'd like to schedule a tour and one email that was meant for another person entirely! After the first unsolicited email, I replied to Julie and reminded her of our previous conversation and told her that my budget had not changed. Julie apologized and told me that she would not reach out again. It is now over six months from our initial contact and Julie has continued to send me unsolicited emails asking to schedule a tour.
I could not have asked for a better venue for my wedding. My wife wanted to host a wedding where the entire bridal party could stay together because so many times in a hotel one or more of the party will stay in the hotel room. Saying the weekend in the Mountain House allowed our parents to interact and the entire party to have meals together which made the weekend that much more special. My wife also wanted a venue where she could express herself as much as possible in the decorations. Julie and Frank allowed her to do as much as she wanted and then took over all the execution on the day of the event. Julie and Frank were so accommodating, you can tell that they not only know how to throw a great wedding, but to beautifully interact with each member of the bridal party making them all relaxed and feel at home. Not being from the Sunday River area we did not know any vendors besides using Yelp, etc, but Julie has great connections with everyone and gave great recommendations. Our florist even brought extra table decorations and flowers for our event, a gesture that was only made because of her relationship with Julie. While I could go on and on about all the wonderful aspects of a wedding at the Mountain House, but that will ruin the surprise for everyone. Just rest assured that it is perfect.
The mountain house was the most beautiful wedding venue I have been to. Gorgeous natural scenery and charming comfortable lodging. Julie and her recommendations made everything go very smoothly. I especially liked the birch tree alter and the barn/bar. Hope to return soon!
My daughter choose this as the setting for her and Brian's wedding. The place was amazing! From the spectacular view to the intimacy of the cathedrals were they said their vows. The house and lodge was perfect for the wedding party and family to stay . Juli and Frank were awesome, making sure that Nicole's day was all that she had wanted. The houses were well stocked with all that we needed to cook and the beds were extremmely comfortable as well. We enjoyed our stay from the time we arrived Thursday until departure on Sunday. Thank you Juli and Frank for everything!
The Mountain House on Sunday River is the most beautiful wedding venue. There is no other place that has amenities that compare. On top of a gorgeous location, Julie and Frank take things to the next level. They are easy to work with, responsive, and will put your mind at ease. They helped me put together the wedding I have been dreaming of for years. Everything was absolutely perfect and I couldn't have asked for more.
The place was more beautiful than I could have imagined. It fit the bridal party, groomsmen and two families very comfortably allowing all to mingle between the two homes. The surrounding area could not be more perfect for a fall wedding, or really a wedding any time of the year. The beauty of the natural surroundings not only made for picturesque hikes but will make for the type of wedding photos most brides only dream of. Thank you!
My son married his sweetheart just this past weekend. The venue was amazing with fall color, a magical "cathedral" of trees where they said their vows and a barn area and deck where we ate delicious food, drank and danced all evening. The houses had extremely comfortable beds and comfy furniture. Thankfully, the kitchens were extremely well stocked for meal preparations and I was even able to bake there for the wedding. The venue was amazing and we were all part of a magical wedding thanks to Julie and Frank.
Having our wedding at The Mountain House was absolutely incredible. I could not have dreamed of a more magical place to say our "I Do's." From the moment we toured the site, we knew that this was the venue for us. Frank and Julie instantly felt like family and they were as excited as we were to start planning our day. They have put so much time, energy and love into creating a wedding venue that has it all, everything a bride could want, all in one beautiful location. Julie was always there for my million e-mails and phone calls, answering every question in a very timely manner, but she was also frequently checking in on me, making sure I had everything I needed; she made me feel like I was the only bride she was working with.
One of our favorite parts about the Mountain House property was the two houses that are on-site accommodations. It was very important to us to be able to have family and friends be able to stay on site so that we could turn our wedding into a whole weekend long celebration.
Mountain House is a blank canvas, you can make your day whatever you want. You can have a pot-luck BBQ rehearsal dinner on the farmhouse porch (we did and it was SO much fun!) or you can cater your event! The property is yours for the whole weekend! There are lawn games that can be set up, a room with games and ping-pong, river frontage for beautiful photo opps, an apple grove that is lit with twinkle lights (hello gorgeous evening photos!). The list goes on and on.
It is very important to know that I really mean it when I say that Mountain House is not an easy venue, and not for the faint of heart- you can't just plug a bride and groom into the venue and have your wedding (like most venues). You must pick and choose every piece of your day (or weekend). Mountain House works with their own caterer which is super helpful (and very reasonably priced with amazing food!) But it is the responsibility of the couple to rent a tent, tables, chairs-for tables and for ceremony (unless you choose to get married in the pine grove where there are beautiful pine benches for seating), plates, glasses, silverware. You also pay extra for different tent lighting, etc. You can hire a bar service or supply your own alcohol, served by their service. You must find a DJ, cake baker, photographer, florist. You need to be aware of just how much work and planning will need to go into your day. But this is what is so awesome and unique about Mountain House. No two weddings will ever be the same here and you can really make it your own!
No matter what you choose to do or what you need, Frank and Julie are always there to help. They have a great list of recommended vendors and will do everything they can to help make your day as stress-free as possible. Julie was even our day-of-coordinator! She helped make sure that the day ran smoothly and helped corral our families and friends for different photos, etc.
I really can't say enough good things about Mountain House or Frank and Julie. I wish I could re-live our day over and over!!
When I was searching for a location for our wedding day I basically googled 'rustic New England weekend weddings' and searched everything from campgrounds to castles. I came across Mountain House on Sunday River and figured I'd send an inquiry email to see if there were any fall dates available and get a rough estimate. Julie got back to me right away and we spent my lunch hour going over what I wanted and what the cost would be -- she was very helpful and thorough and gave me an idea of the total expense. She also happened to have a bride who had to move her wedding and my perfect date, October 1st, was miraculously available. We went up to view the property and fell in love -- I couldn't imagine getting married anywhere else after that.
The venue is amazing -- all of our guests commented on how beautiful and unique it was. The fact that you can rent the farmhouse and lodge for the weekend and have your wedding party and/or family stay with you makes it even more special.
We got married in the 'Pine Cathedral' which is little copse of pine trees behind the farmhouse with a birch arch and hand hewn wooden benches. It was the perfect place to say our vows - and with the pine needles covering the ground and the trees surrounding the area we didn't even need any decor for the ceremony.
The reception area is so beautiful -- they've built a wooden platform connecting the breeze barn (small open faced barn that with chandeliers and lighting) to the tent area. There are gorgeous fairy lights strung up all over the property that give it a warm ambiance. The bar is also amazing -- all wood and plenty of space and the bartenders were friendly. Even the bathrooms are amazing -- they've built outdoor restrooms that are honestly nicer than some in hotel weddings I've attended.
The fall in Maine is absolutely amazing and the view of the mountains made the day even more spectacular. Because the weather can be unpredictable we weren't sure how it would go but the day was low 60s and the night got chilly but we had a heater in the tent, the firepit going, and a heater in the barn and the dance floor was packed all night!
Honestly the only thing I am upset about is that the local moose didn't stop by for the wedding ... haha! Frank told us he comes walking down the street sometimes and we were hoping for a sighting but no luck. But in all seriousness, it was the perfect day!
We had a wonderful experience having our wedding at Mountain House on Sunday River, and are really, really happy with how everything turned out!
Mountain House is unique for a number of reasons that really appealed to us. We really wanted to go the DIY route and choose our own vendors (including fo0d), and Mountain House is ideally suited for that. Having lodging on-site for two days let us take more time to prep and decorate, and make the wedding feel like our home; we also felt less stressed about setup and breakdown. The site is really well set up, with nice event bathrooms, a patio for setting up a tent, running power for DJ and lighting equipment, and for bringing in a caterer. But the best feature of all, of course, is the grounds, the stunning view of the mountains and forest. Our ceremony was absolutely beautiful.
We're glad that we decided to have Julie work with us as our day of coordinator, and she and her husband Frank were extremely helpful during the final week of prep as well as the big day. She had useful recommendations on vendors she's worked with as well.
We would definitely recommend Mountain House on Sunday River to couples looking for a unique, rustic, and beautiful Maine wedding.
Our wedding weekend far exceeded our expectations. Frank and Julie are the best, so friendly, accommodating, and helpful. The property and houses are beautiful, clean, and well-maintained. They have put so much time and work into making this venue somebody's dream. I would highly recommend this venue for anybody looking for a beautiful property that is different from the average wedding venue.
The Mountain House could not have been more perfect for our wedding weekend. Between the accommodations, the fun and games, the expansive property & view, and the amazing September weather we literally could not have asked for anything more.
Julie and Frank went out of their way to help make our weekend special, greeting us when we arrived and giving us big hugs, we felt like we really knew them by the end of it all. Julie helped coordinate our day and had wonderful ideas to help me during the planning process. Given I am from out of state, her guidance was crucial to our weekend's success.
All our guests have been raving about how awesome the weekend was and what a perfect wedding venue it was and how it fit our personalities so well. Thanks again Julie and Frank for letting us host the best weekend of our lives at your venue, we have a few other wonderful memories in the Sunday River area, but this one surely 'takes the cake'! (pun intended) :)
This review starts at 4am the morning of our wedding when I was awoken by what sounded like a freight train screaming through the mountains around Newry Maine. But I was mistaken. It wasn't a freight train, it was a Monsoon! Every soon to be groom's worst nightmare was my reality at 4am on this Saturday in August. My Bride to be had been looking at various weather models all week hypothesizing about what we would do if our planned outdoor wedding was a wash. All week I kept saying, "things will be fine" (famous last words). We debated and debated what we would do if it rained. What can we do we declared, after all will be good luck. :)
Fast Forward 12 hours and I'm I'm standing on the deck of the main house with my grooms men with our guest arriving and the rain has subsided a bit, not entirely. Like professionals we pivoted from getting married in the field with wonderful Sunday River as a backdrop to getting married in the tent. .. what happened over the next 7 hours can only be described as.... magical.
Rain, Torrential downpour, or shine The Mountain House is a really special place to get married. The setting is incredibly unique, the ambiance is relaxing, and charm is through the roof. Julie and Frank helped us ensure we didn't miss any details in our planning and executing of the BIG day. This is really important as there are many little details that can get easily overlooked. As a do-it-yourself style venue it also gave us the flexibility to work with some vendors of our own choice (flowers, DJ, etc). Having a venue for the entire weekend was awesome because it gave our family a relaxing place to get ready, socialize, and get away from the festivities if needed. It was a truly great weekend enjoyed by all.
In Summary:
My Wife and I had the best day of our life getting married at the Mountain House this August. The setting was fantastic, all the details were perfect, our guests had a blast dancing late into the night. The Rain did nothing other then changed our ceremony location. In fact the feedback from our guests was the tent provided a really intimate setting for our ceremony. The deck for the tent and its proximity to the breeze barn for dancing gave our guests the perfect balance between loud and wild & relaxing and laid back. Even though mother nature didn't cooperate (I mean you couldn't even see the mountains due to the low cloud cover and rain) it was still EXACTLY what we both wanted for our big day. We live in Boston and when planning we decided we wanted to get outside of the city for our special day. The Sunday River (Bethel, Newry) area definitely delivered with its wide variety of activities for our guests and delivered that quintessential New England charm we were looking for by getting married outside of a city (Boston, Portland, etc). If we could do it again, we wouldn't change a thing, even the weather.
Unbelievably awesome! 2nd best decision my boy made ( the first asking her to marry him)!
The venue was spectacular, and coming from out of the country, the long weekend at Mountain House made it even more worthwhile, as my girl and I had so much time to catch up with our buddy and his family and friends.
I would recommend this venue to anyone, as I see it as a very suitable site to make it your own.
I guess I should begin this review by saying Klint and I had scrolled past this listing a couple of times on the Knot before touring the venue. We first saw the Mountain House in person before going up on North Peak to tour their reception area. After getting to the top of Sunday River, we knew we wanted to return to the Mountain House to take photos to send to our family to show them the place we were going to say "I do"! What drew us back was the incredibly gorgeous backdrop and venue, but what led us to choose the Mountain House was so much more than that - in short, it became ours. Like people said before me, it made it so special having the venue for the entire weekend. We were able to spend time before and after the wedding spending time with people that we don't see often. Having a wedding which everyone can just relax and have fun was very important to us, and I don't think we could have chosen a more perfect place. It was also so helpful having Julie and Frank be a part of the planning process. Julie was so responsive, even when my wedding was a year and a half away and I was filled with a million questions. Her recommendations proved her creativity and knowledge. I won't lie, it was a bit more difficult than I thought planning a DIY wedding - but Julie was certainly there along the way reminding me of things I may have missed. But, then, when I found out that I was missing something - a 6 foot table for the DJ at 1:00 on Saturday afternoon while I was getting my makeup done, Julie was right there, finding a solution. However, although it is going to sound a bit cliche, all the hard work was so worth it.
When we first looked at the Mountain House on Sunday River, it was beautiful. But after putting so much "us" in it, I cannot describe how amazing the day was. It also didn't hurt how much Julie and Frank have invested in to the Mountain House! You can tell how much pride they have in their property. We were so impressed after not seeing the Mountain House in a year - they had made so many new additions that made an already perfect venue so much better.
Thank you so so much for everything, Julie and Frank!! Xoxoxox, The Dobras :)
IT was a wonderful experience . Three days and nights on this beautiful property made our experience seem more like a wedding vacation for not only us but all our friends and relatives. Julie was so helpful organizing the whole week end , she was just fantastic! We hope to revisit our wedding venue for future stays and skiing trips. It truly is a slice of Heaven!!!
The mountain house was the perfect choice for our July wedding. The grounds looked beautiful and the views of the mountain were breath taking.
I loved having different areas at the same venue. This allowed us to spread out our ceremony and reception without having to drive to a different location.
Julie did a great job making sure that the houses had what we needed for our weekend stay with our bridesmaids and groomsmen.
My husband and I had a wonderful time at the mountain house. Our wedding was beautiful and fun.
What a beautiful and perfect place for our wedding! We booked the property sight unseen based on the reviews and photos on the website. The pictures simply don't do it justice. We couldn't have been more pleased!
For our small, intimate, nine guest wedding, The charming and rustic Farmhouse was perfect for sleeping all of our guests. However, the property could easily accommodate a much larger wedding. In fact, property is so large, we had a hard time selecting the space for the ceremony...there are so many beautiful options!
Waking up in the separate Bridal Suite with amazing views of the mountain was incredibly romantic.
The scenery is indescribable. For a fall wedding, we enjoyed the vibrant autumn colors while walking the trails down to Sunday River and playing croquet on the large front lawn.
We loved the do-it-yourself aspect of the venue. We created the wedding we wanted, exactly the way we chose.
Julie was wonderful. She helped us every step of the way, and went above and beyond to ensure we experienced the wedding of our dreams. Any question or concern we had, she responded immediately with thoughts and suggestions.
We highly recommend Mountain House as a scenic and rustic mountain experience for any special event. We hope to return in the future!
The Mountain House is not only a wonderful venue to commemorate and celebrate your recent nuptials, but both Julie and Frank were extremely accommodating to us, our families, and our guests for this special occasion. I would HIGHLY recommend The Mountain House at Sunday River for anyone looking for an accommodating venue for those looking to have creative input for their DIY wedding and to work with accommodating/welcoming individuals such as Julie and Frank. Both my wife and I are grateful for their hospitality and welcoming demeanor.
Thank you for helping making our wedding the best celebration of our lives.

Where do I even begin? This was the first and only venue that we looked at! Once we set foot on the property our hearts sang and we knew this was the place for us. The houses are beautifully crafted and the views are spectacular.
Julie and Frank have poured their hearts and souls into The Mountain House on Sunday River. No detail has been overlooked and they continue to make thoughtful improvements.
Julie was a huge part of the success of our big day. She made suggestions for most of our vendors (including One Stop for our rentals and The Good Food Store for catering). When we said we didn't want to spend a lot of money on flowers, she suggested stopping by Trader Joe's in Portland. Julie was even our bartender and our guests were raving about her service (she remembered all their names and drink of choice). Frank was an incredible help as well, he was the "behind the scenes" guy who solved problems before they were even problems.
The scenery was amazing, the service was impeccable but truthfully my favorite thing about the Mountain House was the time our families had to get to know each other. At many weddings, the two families remain very separated... Not at our wedding! Staying in the houses for the weekend and working on our DIY projects really helped blend our two families into one. We are already talking about a family reunion!
The Mountain House on Sunday River, Julie and Frank will forever hold a special place in our hearts. If you are looking for a beautiful place, full of love, to start your marriage this is it. I promise, your expectations will be exceeded!
We had a beautiful early September wedding at the Mountain House on Sunday River. The wedding turned out even more beautiful than we could have imagined and almost all of the guests made it a point to reach out both during the wedding and after to say what a gorgeous and perfect spot it was.
Having the houses to get ready in and having everyone and everything right there was perfect.
This is a do it yourself venue, which is no joke!! We loved the idea of having more freedom for food, drinks, and decorations. We also thought it would be a less expensive approach (it was not). We also thought we understood how much work it would be, but we didn't realize that we would be the ones, along with friends and family, on the morning of our wedding day, to place all the linens on the tables (rental company doesn't do this because they have to be set up the morning of so they don't get dew or anything on them), fold the napkins, put out the place settings, put water in the water glasses, etc. and make it look how we wanted.
The costs also add up quickly. In addition to the rental fee for the property, we rented an extra night (let's be real, you need that extra day to settle in and set up and plan how everything will come together especially if your rehearsal dinner is there on Friday night), renting the bathrooms (which are absolutely beautiful and brand new), renting the bar, bartender, food, who passes out the apps and clears and rinses the dishes (rented additional help), tent, napkins, plates, lighting package, alcohol, insurance, flowers, etc. You also have to think about things that you may not get from your caterer: pies or cake (who cuts and distributes it?!), coffee, and how you want to display those things.
Julie is very responsive to emails and will get back to you quickly with any questions that you have. She's upfront that it's a do it yourself venue, but we didn't know all that that really meant until we were in the throws of it.
If you can afford to have a wedding planner or someone to take care of the set up, and little details, such as putting water in the glasses (which you can't do too early or they'll get warm before dinner), putting the linens on the tables, etc., that are easily overlooked, that would be a great way to reduce stress on your special day. It would be nice if that service was included in the rental of the venue.
Overall, our day, even though it was a lot of hard work, was the most beautiful day that we could have imagined! The Mountain house has a lot of charm and has one of the most beautiful backdrops out there!
The owners Julie and Frank of this lovely property were so helpful. Did not steer My daughter and her Bride to be wrong with anything. Their advice for food service, rentals and DJ were the Best ever! Their houses were fully equipped with everything you could need. 2 Very clean ,cheerful and comfy homes Great for families to gather and blend. Plenty of kitchen space, Bridal suite was Great! It had it's own kitchen too. I can not rave enough about this whole destination wedding. The view was breathtaking. I greatly recommend checking this little peace of heaven out for family gatherings and reunions. If you want a wedding that no one will ever forget Book Mountain House on Sunday River. We had people come from all over the USA and not one person had a complaint ,only compliments. Our girls did a great job picking you to celebrate their union/ you did a great job keeping your commitment to satisfy your new friends. Sincerely, R. Probst
