We were immensely disappointed with Jill and the Moxie team. We were blown away with the tasting only to be completely let down for the delivery. We had an Indian-American wedding ...
and wanted a mix of both on the menu. Chef Wes made excellent dishes from both sides for the tasting so our decision seemed easy. Communication wasn’t great after we signed a contract, but as things moved closer to our original wedding date (we had to postpone due to covid) communications picked up. Rescheduling didn’t create any issues. As the new date approached communications again, weren’t great, but staff were out with covid so we were patient. Then, three days before the wedding, Jill sent frantic messages to our day-of coordinator saying that they may not be able to deliver the full menu. I called Jill directly who was overwhelmed and stressed and said they couldn’t set up our linens and tableware as planned, and they couldn’t deliver on any of our Indian dishes or hors d’oeuvres. She said half the staff was suddenly out with covid and said there were supply chain issues getting all of the food we needed. We spoke again the next day (by then my husband and I were already searching for alternatives) and she said they could provide some of the Indian dishes, but not all. One day before the wedding (by now we had an alternate Indian caterer secured), we were re-negotiating the contract and Jill became defensive when we presented a lower price than her offer. She complained about the size of our menu and said it was “too much food.” She also scoffed at our choice of substitute caterer and exclaimed that their price was too high (their price was part of our case for requesting a lower price from Moxie). On the phone call she left the phone on when she thought we had hung up and Jill yelled to someone “she’s fighting with me.” Her unprofessionalism was shocking and appalling. On wedding day the food arrived late, our hors d’oeuvres were served for only 15 minutes (planned to be served for 45 min), the buffet opened 30 minutes late (which threw off our entire reception schedule), Moxie team did not keep the food from the substitute caterer warm (and some items were served cold), the team was rushing around and obviously overwhelmed and reportedly unprofessional with our coordinator and venue staff, water goblets went unfilled for a long portion of dinner, and most disappointing of all was the food quality: the steak was extremely rare (so rare I could not even cut it) and the salad tasted at least a day old. Several guests and our close family told us how poor of quality the food from Moxie was (in comparison, everyone loved the food from the Indian caterer, even despite it being cold). We had a follow-up call with Jill after the wedding and she blamed problems on the venue and our day-of coordinator. Moxie refunded our final payment, though it doesn’t make up for the extra stress and trouble it caused. Voltaire and Golden Ox may be able to deliver tasty food, but their catering team has unfortunately not been able to survive the challenges of COVID and seriously under-delivered. Hopefully they can recover, however as long as Jill is with the team, we cannot recommend them as caterers.
My husband and I booked Moxie Catering in 2019 for our October 2020 wedding. Jill and her team were great in talking through menu and service options. They had us come to The Golde...
n Ox for a tasting for a flat fee, which went toward our overall event cost (great idea and experience!), which sealed the deal - everything was DELICIOUS! We landed on the full menu and were looking forward to working with them for our 200+ person event.
When COVID hit, we were hit with some extraordinary challenges. Our venue closed and, with high-risk immediate family members, we knew that we could not move forward with the event and menu we initially planned. Jill and her team didn't bat an eye at either change - they were incredibly accommodating and provided the same menu in a plated service (switched from buffet) within our new budget for a 22-person event. Jill also helped address our concerns by making suggestions for appetizer and dinner service to ensure safety for everyone. Jill not only helped with the logistics, she truly helped put our minds at ease. In 2020, that is a HUGE feat!
The meal was superb and the service was exceptional. Everyone raved throughout each course, and we still get people saying, "the food was amazing!". Jill also connected us with the baker from The Ox Cafe and Bakery, whose mini cupcakes were divine. The full meal was incredible and helped make our day so special.
We hope to have a reception in 2021 with our original guest list and can't wait to work with Moxie again.
Awesome! So flexible with our needs and some last minute changes due to COVID-19. Food was adventurous and innovative, but not too eclectic for my meat-and-potatoes-loving family....
Everyone was so pleased with the results!
Moxie Catering was not only the most amazing food, but their team was incredible to work with! Jill was willing to make sure our day was perfect. We have been to our fair share of ...
weddings and typically don't leave having the "best meal", but this is not the case with Moxie. We have received countless feedback on how wonderful our food was! Moxie was fabulous to work with and I would highly recommend them to any KC brides! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making our day so perfect!
Attended a wedding reception they catered.
They served brinner (Breakfast for dinner)! Everything was fantastic.
Moxie catering was absolutely fantastic in their execution of dinner for our wedding. Jill and Anna both sat down with us extensively to determine what style of dinner and setup th...
at we wanted. They were very proactive in recommending solutions and ideas that fit within our concept. After determining initial details, Wes created a custom menu tailored to our tastes and guest dietary restrictions. The food was fantastic. Every guest we talked to said it was the best wedding food they had experienced. Being from a restaurant and hospitality background I was adamant about restaurant quality food. I know from prior experience that doing that off site is always a challenge. They definitely nailed it.
They also provided a fantastic bar team that served up amazing drinks all night long.
The day of our wedding we did not have to worry about a single detail. I'm sure there were some problems and issues that arose as they tend to the day of an event, but we never heard a word of any of them. Moxie is a very classy, punctual, and thorough caterer. I will absolutely use them again for any events I might need as well as recommend them to any friends seeking catering services.
People, Moxie catering is ever-y-thing! Outstanding service, attentive to detail, and epic food. Jill, Anna, Chris and team were simply amazing. They made our wedding day so incred...
ibly special, and as an event planner, it felt so incredibly good to know we had this type of partner in executing our big day. I didn't have to lift a finger on the day of, nor was my glass ever empty. Plus, they go above and beyond on the service they provide. It's the little things that make your life easier in events and they get it, completely. If you're considering other caterers, don't. Just call Jill. You'll be glad you did.
I have so much for which to thank Moxie. Not only was the food raved about by all our guests, but Jill and Wes made some of the best suggestions to achieve the relaxed wedding I wa...
nted. In addition, they were able to streamline the day by ordering all of our rentals for us from companies they consistently work with. Jill and Anna were available for my last minute questions and were so accommodating. Overall, they were the main reason why our wedding day was perfect.
Moxie was perfect for our venue style and wedding set up. Jill and her team were great. Food was delicious and lovely display.

ink! Moxie catering is by far the best catering company in Kansas City and we would highly recommend them! They don’t disappoint!
Moxie’s food is fantastic!! At their restaurant, Voltaire, I had easily the best venison I’ve ever tasted in my life (unconnected with the wedding), and everything from the hors d’...
oeuvres to the dinner was superb on the day, earning rave reviews from all of our guests. The hors d’oeuvres in particular were also beautifully presented/plated.
Unfortunately, I found Jill and Wes to be difficult at best to communicate with throughout the planning process, something made more complicated by the fact that I lived out of state until about a month before the event. Trying to get the menu nailed down, and receive both an initial and secondary quote, took months as we sent emails or called and endured long stretches of silence from them in return. My husband scheduled many calls with them that they would simply not keep the appointment for, and there was at least one point where I was wondering if they were indeed still planning on catering our
wedding.
When meeting with Jill, I liked her personally, and the food at the tasting was top notch. However, though I know she caters many weddings each year, her attitude overall was remarkably cavalier. I’m not the type of person to require any amount of hand-holding, but I do expect reasonably timely correspondence and basic courtesy when conducting a business deal. I had the feeling on several occasions that my legitimate practical concerns were being viewed simply as overwrought hand-wringing by Moxie.
On the day, the food looked and tasted excellent, and their staff was very professional. They did run out of grilled vegetables, and had to switch from focaccia to a different bread by the time the last few tables entered the buffet line, but the guests were all happy.
Though Moxie offers what I’m sure is some of the best catering and certainly the best food I’ve ever had in the city, the communication issue was not worth it to me. I would recommend a dinner at Voltaire to anyone, but unless you have a full-service wedding coordinator to handle your logistics, I wouldn’t suggest taking on the stress of working with Moxie.
First, let me say, the food was phenomenal. My husband is a big foodie and so are a bunch of our friends, and Moxie truly delivered a great meal -- and one that got rave reviews fr...
om our pickiest and most adventurous-eating guests. Having great food at our wedding was very important to us and Moxie definitely let us achieve that goal.
This absolutely would have been a five-star review (or more, if allowed) if it weren't for some serious frustrations with their customer service leading up to the wedding. When we did our tasting almost a year before our wedding, they assured us that we could tweak our menu before our big day "at any time" and in their contract it provides a provision for changes up to 30 days out. When we reached out 1 1/2 months before our wedding to make some tweaks we were met with a number of obstacles. They had already ordered some items without telling us and said we would have to pay more to make a simple change from one chicken dish to another. If you go with Moxie, I recommend that you lock down your menu before you sign the contract so as not to deal with this frustration. But, the food could not have been better.
If you're reading this review and you have tastings scheduled with other caterers in Kansas City, cancel them. Immediately call Jill and book Moxie.
Moxie Catering is hands down ...
the best in the business. Our wedding menu was phenomenal (real MVP: the mac and cheese bar). We received countless compliments from our guests. Most of them said we had the best wedding food they've ever had. And we agree.
Jill takes the time to meet one-on-one with you and develop a custom menu based on your personal preferences. Nothing is selected off of a list of predetermined items.
Moxie went above and beyond the day of our wedding. Jill helped send our wedding party down the aisle, we had members of the wait staff who seemed to be assigned to us and Jill helped us cut our cake successfully. Shout out to Anna: she did our flowers and they were perfect!
Moxie is respected throughout Kansas City. Venues love working with Jill and her team. She's responsive, detail-oriented, professional and a great partner for any major event. Out of all of our wedding vendors, booking Moxie was the best decision we made.
Food was a very important thing for my husband and I when we got engaged! I did a lot of research and after meeting with Jill, I knew I had found the one! I had a very clear vision...
of what I wanted and she made it happen within my budget. Guests raved about the food. It is definitely wasn't your typical wedding buffet food. It felt like it was all made to order. I have had so many compliments on the truffle popcorn, butternut squash soup shots and the AMAZING mashed potatoes! They were so helpful beyond the food aspect. They helped with tents, lighting, heating, bartending etc. My day would not have been possible without this company! Thank you for making our day magical!
My husband and I used Moxie Catering for our wedding on July 22, 2017. YES it was an outside wedding on the hottest day of the year! Jill acted like a wedding planner for me, which...
took so much stress off. She helped organize our rentals and even loaned us some of her own dishware free of charge. We are picky drinkers so was important for us to provide our own alcohol. Jill was very supportive of our decision. She provided a bar tender for us and even brought bar condiments (lemons, limes, cherries) at no charge. Most caterers would not have allowed that.
On our wedding day the team was early and so helpful. Jill showed up with cold towels for us to wipe down with or place on our necks to keep cool. The staff did anything and everything we asked for. They set up all of our tables, including the centerpieces, acted as personal assistants and servers, and even played our music for us. The chefs used our kitchen in order to provide the freshest food, and let me tell you... the food was AMAZING!!! Moxie provided a full service dinner party experience including passed appetizers, table service and cake cutting. After the wedding, they packed up all of our leftover food, cleaned off all of the tables, and cleaned our kitchen.
Lastly, Moxie was very affordable. Not only did I get amazing food and personal service, but Jill also saved me about $5,000 by playing the role of my wedding planner. I would 100% recommend Moxie catering to anyone that wants a fabulous dinner party experience without draining your bank account.

rs. Wes and Jill worked with us as if extended family members, making sure every detail was taken care of. Each and every guest heaped praise on the elegance of service and quality of food served. Wes and Jill provided a superb catering service on the wedding day smoothly and invisibly in spite of an unanticipated guest in the form of a heavy thunderstorm! We will certainly use Moxie Catering for any of our future needs in Kansas City.

Moxie catered my wedding in May. Their presentation was outstanding. We met with them twice before the wedding and boasted that they never run out of anything. However, at our rec...
eption they ran out of beer and wine twice. By the time I was able to get to the bar they told me they were totally out of beer and would not be getting more. To my embarrassment, I was told recently told by guests that they ran out of meat for the last three tables to come to the buffet.
The food was delicious and everyone raved about it. We couldn't have been happier with the staff and all of their help.

e and my many, many emails and questions. We were invited to their restaurant for a tasting and then back again for the exact meal that we had decided on for the wedding. Everything was perfect! The food was wonderful and her whole team was such a big help the day of the wedding. They worked so seamlessly that everything came together beautifully. Several of our guests commented how wonderful the food was, and I was told later that a few guests snuck back in the kitchen area to get seconds. Jill graciously accommodated them. She checked with me several times throughout the evening to make sure everything was going well and to see if I needed help with anything. I really appreciated that! She and her team helped make my daughter's wedding day perfect!!!

nly wedding day request was to have a nice, hearty meal with our friends and Moxie delivered. They were very accommodating to our vegetarian/vegan/dietary requests as well. I highly recommend - best in KC.

wedding they have ever had! Common comment "that was the best bacon I've ever had."
We had the idea of doing breakfast for dinner. No one got the idea quite like Jill and Wes. They worked with us and created a stellar menu. The food was out of this world.
The best part though - Jill was super easy to work with, flexible and accommodating to our gluten free guest and helpful with planning. Their staff was AWESOME! Everyone RAVED about the food and service!
Do not pass go without going to see Jill and Wes at Moxie. They are the gourmet food team you need - exceptional service and value!
Wes and Jill are great to work with. They actually saved us since we had to fire our original caterer (Salt) about 2 weeks before the wedding. Fortunately for us, Moxie happened to...
be available and they did more than come through! We had a specific outline of a meal we were looking to have and they created the most beautiful dish for us and our guests. From the passed hors d'oeuvres after the ceremony to the seasonal salad, to the gorgeous plated meal, everything was amazing! We got to go into their restaurant, Voltaire, for a tasting - Jill personally brought out each dish and talked about them before we dug in. Wes came out to chat with us as well - we had a very unique situation in which both my husband's dad and my dad both work for the same beef company and they wanted specific steaks to be provided at the reception dinner. Wes and Jill said no problem and working with them was a breeze! Not to mention the food was outstanding!! I have to also give a shout out to the salad the Wes created - it was the prettiest, most delicious spring salad I have every had! We highly recommend Moxie catering. They are professional, but also nice to work with and their food is just excellent in all categories - quality, taste, presentation, etc!

h them. What made us choose Moxie, other than all the recommendations we'd already received, was their willingness to help with dietary restrictions. We had wedding guests with a variety of food restrictions (no dairy, gluten-free, no beef, vegetarian, vegan). Moxie didn't give us just a boring dish of plain pasta with veggies as our vegan option - they offered an amazing curried vegetable korma over basmati rice. And it was GOOD! Our friends and family were so touched - and also just blown away by the flavor. My husband and I consider ourselves to be foodies, so the food was one of the more important parts of our reception. I certainly wouldn't say that Moxie is inexpensive, but for us, it was absolutely worth the price. If you want food that your guests will remember, think of Moxie.

rk with Moxie from the minute we tried the food (both at Voltaire and during our official tasting) - it was delicious. When we mentioned to Jill that we weren't sure we wanted a buffet or a full sit down, she immediately suggested a family style meal. We hadn't seen one done at a wedding before, but it was such a great suggestion and fit the vibe of our wedding perfectly. Wedding food doesn't always get the highest reviews, but we loved the food at our wedding and have had guests commenting since that day about how delicious all of the food was and how impressed they were by the quality. Jill also coordinated servers, bartenders, alcohol and rentals (dishes, linens, silverware, and a last minute table). She made sure every detail was taken care of and made sure the day of went smoothly - and she even made sure the groom and I had plates waiting for us at our table right away so we were sure to get something to eat before we started mingling with guests!

They also did our bar service, a last minute add on, and it was no problem at all.
Can see why you are voted the best of the best! Our farm setting provided little to support your serving.

Everything was flawless with Moxie Catering. The delicious appetizers and grill items were served with flair and a big hit with everyone.

All services arrived on time and operated with stealth efficiency. When presented, the food reflected the day and the delighted comments from my guests never stopped. Not only was the quality wonderful but the joyful presentation created an atmosphere of happiness.
I highly recommend Moxie for your next event.
Moxie Catering is unique. When my husband and I met with Jill for our initial meeting, we started to talk about what foods we like (and didn't like) and what we were thinking of ha...
ving for our reception. They didn't make us choose from a menu, instead they custom built a menu for us based on our culinary conversation! When we received the first draft of the menu a few weeks after our meeting, it was spot on. Jill and Wes managed to pull out a perfect selection of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. They even through in a tray of mac and cheese at no charge for the kids. Jill also worked with us and provided the china, wine glasses, and even ice buckets for the tables. We received so many compliments on the food, and thoroughly enjoyed it ourselves. We highly recommend Moxie!!!
If I could give 10 stars, I would. Moxie is amazing. Our guests raved about the food. My husband has a few dietary restrictions, and Moxie was the only caterer I contacted who made...
a full menu that looked and tasted amazing within those constraints. You will not simply be eating the same old wedding food that other caterers provide - it will be unique and perfectly suited to your tastes and wedding. I also have to comment on how amazing Jill is to work with. During our walk-through at the venue, there was very little direction from the venue staff. Jill stepped in and took charge, ensuring that we had all the space, tables, dishware, etc that we would need. On the night of the wedding, she came over to ensure that my husband and I had plates of food brought to our table so that we did not have to fight through the buffet line. We also used their bartenders for the wedding, and they were so much fun - seriously creating a fun atmosphere behind the bar. When I mentioned we would have quite a few people who do not drink alcohol, Jill recommended adding a housemade Thai-basil lemonade, which was perfect, and I had guests comment that they were so happy there was a non-soda option in the non-alcoholic section of the bar menu. All in all, I would recommend Moxie in a heartbeat to anyone getting married or having an event. I would love to throw a giant party all over again just to have them cater it. They are wonderful.
We heard of Moxie through a few different sources, but they were highly recommended by our venue River Market Event Place who uses them regularly.
Moxie is actually the cateri...
ng division of the restaurant in the West Bottoms called Voltaire. This place is a contemporary American style restaurant with a great chef and the ability to serve fun and delicious food to large groups with the style you'd expect in a restaurant.
My wife and I didn't want typical wedding food that is easy to serve to large groups quickly. We wanted food that matched our style. Street tacos, gourmet burgers, designer pizza. Moxie had it all, and delivered it well. From the moment we had our first tasting, we knew Moxie would be our choice and they were great! Our guests all spoke highly of the food at the wedding and the small amount I actually got to eat was delicious too!
Thanks Moxie!

ervers constantly walking around helping out. By the end of the night everything was cleared off the tables so we could really enjoy our centerpieces all night. The food Moxie served us was so tasty. I am so happy we chose Moxie and highly recommend them to anyone. I know Moxie will have future customers because of people that attended my wedding.
Moxie is simply the best in town. Their menu and food selections are simply superb. At our tasting, we were able to try everything off of our menu and it was absolutely delicious...
. Throughout the reception, we heard nothing but amazing things about how everyone loved the food. We also used Moxie for our bar staff and the plates. We used their "vintage" plates collection which was such a unique look for our wedding - I highly recommend it. All of the items they prepared for us were perfect for the winter (butternut squash risotto, kale salad, etc) and I wish I had leftovers! Good thing we can go to their great restaurant to get more of their food!
Moxie Catering was recommended to us by both our reception venue contact and our day-of coordinator. They are very keyed into, not only the food you want served at your event, but ...
also the vibe you are going for. The food was absolutely amazing and their pricing was competitive as well. My husband and I were more than pleased and our guests are still commenting on the food at our wedding!

yone was in line for seconds. Jill was awesome to communicate with, meet with, and really worked with us to figure out exactly what we wanted for our menu food wise and budget wise. She was at our reception making sure everything was going smoothly and even asked me if I needed anything as the Bride twice. We would highly recommend Moxie!

yers and Wes Gartner are the owners and I was so pleased with all of the help and outstanding food they offered! I had no idea there were so many steps and details involved, and was in way over my head; they not only brought those details to my attention but assisted me in making important decisions. The food was amazing (to say the least!) They created a gorgeous cheese tray for the cocktail hour that never seemed to look any emptier. It was great to have alcohol, food, service, and advice all under one roof. I would use them again in a heartbeat. Thanks again Moxie!

able to provide fantastic food for our wedding. They were extremely professional, attentive, and helped us make sure our wedding was fantastic. All of our guests raved about the food!
I absolutely LOVE Moxie. Jill and her team did such an amazing job with the food I had multiple people ask me who catered.
It was the BEST food I have ever had a a wedding. The...
food was hot and delivered evenly at each table to people were not waiting. It was like enjoying the food at their restaurant. People had seconds and thirds of everything.
I also loved how everything was local. We received a detailed menu from Jill and we were able to put descriptions on everyones table so they could see what we were serving.
Food is a huge part of our life so it was a no brainer that we would work with Jill and her husband/team.
The food at our wedding was to die for and the best part is it was on budget. Jill worked with us on putting together a menu that would wow our guests but not break the bank. From ...
appetizers and a delicious buffet (the chicken was phenomenal) to desserts and late night food, our guests were full for days and loved every bite. The value of what we received was amazing and we would select Moxie for our wedding over and over again if we did it again.

r) for all of our Muslim guests. From day one talking to Moxie, they were willing to work with us to make sure everything was served according to religious guidelines, all without sacrificing any quality or changing our vision. They came up with an AMAZING Indian-Thai fusion menu and blew us out of the water at the tasting and, of course, the wedding.
Jill helped every step of the way, from linen and tableware selections to roughing out table rentals we would need from the venue, working with our coordinator and the venue staff to load in and set up on the big day. We didn't have to worry about a thing; everything felt seamless. And delicious! And in budget! Cannot recommend Moxie enough.
We TRIED to work with Moxie but after exactly 1 year from the first day we contacted them, they were booked by someone else for the same day as us before we locked them down. Now,...
this might seem like a case of "you snooze you lose" but we were not the ones holding up the process. We first reached out and were told to contact them a few months down the road. Did that and we met (a meeting they pretty much forgot about until we called them while waiting outside 15 minutes) with them to discuss our thoughts on food and they were then going to put together a preliminary menu for us. We talked about how we wanted "comfort" food with a bit of a twist to dress it up. After several weeks of them not getting us a menu, we finally got one that had nothing to do with the ideas we had talked about. It was all VERY fancy and refined and just not us or what we asked for. We gave them some tweaks and suggestions and asked for them to take another stab at it. They agreed, "no problem" and went to put together another menu. Again, weeks passed (note we were told to wait a week for something back each time they were doing menus) and nothing. We called and we agreed to sit down for another meeting and they'd have a menu then. The day before the meeting, i email them to verify we are still on, as I'd not heard back from them, and I get a response that someone else had booked us for the day. That email came 1 year to the day we first emailed them. What the hell?! It was rather frustrating that we were repeatedly pushed back and then someone else books them. If they were hoping a bigger or better job was going to come along, have the decency to just tell us that from the get go, I honestly wouldn't have had a problem with that. Getting strung along and wasting my time? That pissed me off.
In the end we got amazing food from Fritz's that was perfect for us and we couldn't be happier. I think it worked out for the best that we didn't get the chance to hire them. i just wish it hadn't wasted so much of our time.
Working with Wes and Jill was one of the only stress free things about my wedding planning adventure. Which was perfect for me and my foodie fiance, who were definitely on a budget...
. Your menu will be unique and is completely customizable - no picking 2 apps and 2 entrees from some list. They will design your menu and then let you come in for dinner one night with your fiance and taste everything (and this is all before you have even given them one dime - talk about amazing service). The food is absolutely amazing, made from fresh, local, free-range ingredients. They also coordinated all of my table/chair/linen rentals and even helped with those things for my rehearsal dinner. When I was two months out and stressing out about every single detail, Jill spent a good chunk of time with me on a Friday afternoon, going over everything and soothing my worries. They also have great recommendations for other vendors in town. The money is spot on for what you're getting, although I feel like I should be shelling out much more $$$ for how much Moxie Catering has done for me (shhh!). I couldn't have done it without them :)
