We were immensely disappointed with Jill and the Moxie team. We were blown away with the tasting only to be completely let down for the delivery. We had an Indian-American wedding ...
and wanted a mix of both on the menu. Chef Wes made excellent dishes from both sides for the tasting so our decision seemed easy. Communication wasn’t great after we signed a contract, but as things moved closer to our original wedding date (we had to postpone due to covid) communications picked up. Rescheduling didn’t create any issues. As the new date approached communications again, weren’t great, but staff were out with covid so we were patient. Then, three days before the wedding, Jill sent frantic messages to our day-of coordinator saying that they may not be able to deliver the full menu. I called Jill directly who was overwhelmed and stressed and said they couldn’t set up our linens and tableware as planned, and they couldn’t deliver on any of our Indian dishes or hors d’oeuvres. She said half the staff was suddenly out with covid and said there were supply chain issues getting all of the food we needed. We spoke again the next day (by then my husband and I were already searching for alternatives) and she said they could provide some of the Indian dishes, but not all. One day before the wedding (by now we had an alternate Indian caterer secured), we were re-negotiating the contract and Jill became defensive when we presented a lower price than her offer. She complained about the size of our menu and said it was “too much food.” She also scoffed at our choice of substitute caterer and exclaimed that their price was too high (their price was part of our case for requesting a lower price from Moxie). On the phone call she left the phone on when she thought we had hung up and Jill yelled to someone “she’s fighting with me.” Her unprofessionalism was shocking and appalling. On wedding day the food arrived late, our hors d’oeuvres were served for only 15 minutes (planned to be served for 45 min), the buffet opened 30 minutes late (which threw off our entire reception schedule), Moxie team did not keep the food from the substitute caterer warm (and some items were served cold), the team was rushing around and obviously overwhelmed and reportedly unprofessional with our coordinator and venue staff, water goblets went unfilled for a long portion of dinner, and most disappointing of all was the food quality: the steak was extremely rare (so rare I could not even cut it) and the salad tasted at least a day old. Several guests and our close family told us how poor of quality the food from Moxie was (in comparison, everyone loved the food from the Indian caterer, even despite it being cold). We had a follow-up call with Jill after the wedding and she blamed problems on the venue and our day-of coordinator. Moxie refunded our final payment, though it doesn’t make up for the extra stress and trouble it caused. Voltaire and Golden Ox may be able to deliver tasty food, but their catering team has unfortunately not been able to survive the challenges of COVID and seriously under-delivered. Hopefully they can recover, however as long as Jill is with the team, we cannot recommend them as caterers.

n Ox for a tasting for a flat fee, which went toward our overall event cost (great idea and experience!), which sealed the deal - everything was DELICIOUS! We landed on the full menu and were looking forward to working with them for our 200+ person event.
When COVID hit, we were hit with some extraordinary challenges. Our venue closed and, with high-risk immediate family members, we knew that we could not move forward with the event and menu we initially planned. Jill and her team didn't bat an eye at either change - they were incredibly accommodating and provided the same menu in a plated service (switched from buffet) within our new budget for a 22-person event. Jill also helped address our concerns by making suggestions for appetizer and dinner service to ensure safety for everyone. Jill not only helped with the logistics, she truly helped put our minds at ease. In 2020, that is a HUGE feat!
The meal was superb and the service was exceptional. Everyone raved throughout each course, and we still get people saying, "the food was amazing!". Jill also connected us with the baker from The Ox Cafe and Bakery, whose mini cupcakes were divine. The full meal was incredible and helped make our day so special.
We hope to have a reception in 2021 with our original guest list and can't wait to work with Moxie again.

After determining initial details, Wes created a custom menu tailored to our tastes and guest dietary restrictions. The food was fantastic. Every guest we talked to said it was the best wedding food they had experienced. Being from a restaurant and hospitality background I was adamant about restaurant quality food. I know from prior experience that doing that off site is always a challenge. They definitely nailed it.
They also provided a fantastic bar team that served up amazing drinks all night long.
The day of our wedding we did not have to worry about a single detail. I'm sure there were some problems and issues that arose as they tend to the day of an event, but we never heard a word of any of them. Moxie is a very classy, punctual, and thorough caterer. I will absolutely use them again for any events I might need as well as recommend them to any friends seeking catering services.

Unfortunately, I found Jill and Wes to be difficult at best to communicate with throughout the planning process, something made more complicated by the fact that I lived out of state until about a month before the event. Trying to get the menu nailed down, and receive both an initial and secondary quote, took months as we sent emails or called and endured long stretches of silence from them in return. My husband scheduled many calls with them that they would simply not keep the appointment for, and there was at least one point where I was wondering if they were indeed still planning on catering our
wedding.
When meeting with Jill, I liked her personally, and the food at the tasting was top notch. However, though I know she caters many weddings each year, her attitude overall was remarkably cavalier. I’m not the type of person to require any amount of hand-holding, but I do expect reasonably timely correspondence and basic courtesy when conducting a business deal. I had the feeling on several occasions that my legitimate practical concerns were being viewed simply as overwrought hand-wringing by Moxie.
On the day, the food looked and tasted excellent, and their staff was very professional. They did run out of grilled vegetables, and had to switch from focaccia to a different bread by the time the last few tables entered the buffet line, but the guests were all happy.
Though Moxie offers what I’m sure is some of the best catering and certainly the best food I’ve ever had in the city, the communication issue was not worth it to me. I would recommend a dinner at Voltaire to anyone, but unless you have a full-service wedding coordinator to handle your logistics, I wouldn’t suggest taking on the stress of working with Moxie.

om our pickiest and most adventurous-eating guests. Having great food at our wedding was very important to us and Moxie definitely let us achieve that goal.
This absolutely would have been a five-star review (or more, if allowed) if it weren't for some serious frustrations with their customer service leading up to the wedding. When we did our tasting almost a year before our wedding, they assured us that we could tweak our menu before our big day "at any time" and in their contract it provides a provision for changes up to 30 days out. When we reached out 1 1/2 months before our wedding to make some tweaks we were met with a number of obstacles. They had already ordered some items without telling us and said we would have to pay more to make a simple change from one chicken dish to another. If you go with Moxie, I recommend that you lock down your menu before you sign the contract so as not to deal with this frustration. But, the food could not have been better.
If you're reading this review and you have tastings scheduled with other caterers in Kansas City, cancel them. Immediately call Jill and book Moxie.

took so much stress off. She helped organize our rentals and even loaned us some of her own dishware free of charge. We are picky drinkers so was important for us to provide our own alcohol. Jill was very supportive of our decision. She provided a bar tender for us and even brought bar condiments (lemons, limes, cherries) at no charge. Most caterers would not have allowed that.
On our wedding day the team was early and so helpful. Jill showed up with cold towels for us to wipe down with or place on our necks to keep cool. The staff did anything and everything we asked for. They set up all of our tables, including the centerpieces, acted as personal assistants and servers, and even played our music for us. The chefs used our kitchen in order to provide the freshest food, and let me tell you... the food was AMAZING!!! Moxie provided a full service dinner party experience including passed appetizers, table service and cake cutting. After the wedding, they packed up all of our leftover food, cleaned off all of the tables, and cleaned our kitchen.
Lastly, Moxie was very affordable. Not only did I get amazing food and personal service, but Jill also saved me about $5,000 by playing the role of my wedding planner. I would 100% recommend Moxie catering to anyone that wants a fabulous dinner party experience without draining your bank account.

h them. What made us choose Moxie, other than all the recommendations we'd already received, was their willingness to help with dietary restrictions. We had wedding guests with a variety of food restrictions (no dairy, gluten-free, no beef, vegetarian, vegan). Moxie didn't give us just a boring dish of plain pasta with veggies as our vegan option - they offered an amazing curried vegetable korma over basmati rice. And it was GOOD! Our friends and family were so touched - and also just blown away by the flavor. My husband and I consider ourselves to be foodies, so the food was one of the more important parts of our reception. I certainly wouldn't say that Moxie is inexpensive, but for us, it was absolutely worth the price. If you want food that your guests will remember, think of Moxie.

When we mentioned to Jill that we weren't sure we wanted a buffet or a full sit down, she immediately suggested a family style meal. We hadn't seen one done at a wedding before, but it was such a great suggestion and fit the vibe of our wedding perfectly. Wedding food doesn't always get the highest reviews, but we loved the food at our wedding and have had guests commenting since that day about how delicious all of the food was and how impressed they were by the quality. Jill also coordinated servers, bartenders, alcohol and rentals (dishes, linens, silverware, and a last minute table). She made sure every detail was taken care of and made sure the day of went smoothly - and she even made sure the groom and I had plates waiting for us at our table right away so we were sure to get something to eat before we started mingling with guests!

When we received the first draft of the menu a few weeks after our meeting, it was spot on. Jill and Wes managed to pull out a perfect selection of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. You will not simply be eating the same old wedding food that other caterers provide - it will be unique and perfectly suited to your tastes and wedding. I also have to comment on how amazing Jill is to work with. During our walk-through at the venue, there was very little direction from the venue staff. Jill stepped in and took charge, ensuring that we had all the space, tables, dishware, etc that we would need. On the night of the wedding, she came over to ensure that my husband and I had plates of food brought to our table so that we did not have to fight through the buffet line. We also used their bartenders for the wedding, and they were so much fun - seriously creating a fun atmosphere behind the bar. When I mentioned we would have quite a few people who do not drink alcohol, Jill recommended adding a housemade Thai-basil lemonade, which was perfect, and I had guests comment that they were so happy there was a non-soda option in the non-alcoholic section of the bar menu. All in all, I would recommend Moxie in a heartbeat to anyone getting married or having an event. I would love to throw a giant party all over again just to have them cater it. They are wonderful.

My wife and I didn't want typical wedding food that is easy to serve to large groups quickly. We wanted food that matched our style. Street tacos, gourmet burgers, designer pizza. Moxie had it all, and delivered it well. From the moment we had our first tasting, we knew Moxie would be our choice and they were great! Our guests all spoke highly of the food at the wedding and the small amount I actually got to eat was delicious too!

I had no idea there were so many steps and details involved, and was in way over my head; they not only brought those details to my attention but assisted me in making important decisions. food was hot and delivered evenly at each table to people were not waiting. It was like enjoying the food at their restaurant. People had seconds and thirds of everything.
I also loved how everything was local. We received a detailed menu from Jill and we were able to put descriptions on everyones table so they could see what we were serving.

From day one talking to Moxie, they were willing to work with us to make sure everything was served according to religious guidelines, all without sacrificing any quality or changing our vision. They came up with an AMAZING Indian-Thai fusion menu and blew us out of the water at the tasting and, of course, the wedding.
Jill helped every step of the way, from linen and tableware selections to roughing out table rentals we would need from the venue, working with our coordinator and the venue staff to load in and set up on the big day. We didn't have to worry about a thing; everything felt seamless. And delicious! And in budget! Cannot recommend Moxie enough.
We TRIED to work with Moxie but after exactly 1 year from the first day we contacted them, they were booked by someone else for the same day as us before we locked them down. Now,...
this might seem like a case of "you snooze you lose" but we were not the ones holding up the process. We first reached out and were told to contact them a few months down the road. Did that and we met (a meeting they pretty much forgot about until we called them while waiting outside 15 minutes) with them to discuss our thoughts on food and they were then going to put together a preliminary menu for us. We talked about how we wanted "comfort" food with a bit of a twist to dress it up. After several weeks of them not getting us a menu, we finally got one that had nothing to do with the ideas we had talked about. It was all VERY fancy and refined and just not us or what we asked for. We gave them some tweaks and suggestions and asked for them to take another stab at it. They agreed, "no problem" and went to put together another menu. Again, weeks passed (note we were told to wait a week for something back each time they were doing menus) and nothing. We called and we agreed to sit down for another meeting and they'd have a menu then. The day before the meeting, i email them to verify we are still on, as I'd not heard back from them, and I get a response that someone else had booked us for the day. That email came 1 year to the day we first emailed them. What the hell?! It was rather frustrating that we were repeatedly pushed back and then someone else books them. If they were hoping a bigger or better job was going to come along, have the decency to just tell us that from the get go, I honestly wouldn't have had a problem with that. Getting strung along and wasting my time? That pissed me off.
In the end we got amazing food from Fritz's that was perfect for us and we couldn't be happier. I think it worked out for the best that we didn't get the chance to hire them. i just wish it hadn't wasted so much of our time.

. Your menu will be unique and is completely customizable - no picking 2 apps and 2 entrees from some list. They will design your menu and then let you come in for dinner one night with your fiance and taste everything (and this is all before you have even given them one dime - talk about amazing service). The food is absolutely amazing, made from fresh, local, free-range ingredients. They also coordinated all of my table/chair/linen rentals and even helped with those things for my rehearsal dinner. When I was two months out and stressing out about every single detail, Jill spent a good chunk of time with me on a Friday afternoon, going over everything and soothing my worries. They also have great recommendations for other vendors in town. The money is spot on for what you're getting, although I feel like I should be shelling out much more $$$ for how much Moxie Catering has done for me (shhh!). I couldn't have done it without them :)
