Our wedding day at Oakwood was truly beautiful. The food was excellent, and the day-of logistics were executed smoothly. However, the planning process leading up to the event was f...
rustrating and disappointing.
Room Block and Vacation Home Issues:
On-site accommodations were a major factor in choosing Oakwood, as all our guests were traveling. We booked nearly a year in advance and were told we could add rooms at any time, with no concern about availability during the off-season. Based on this, we delayed finalizing our block while confirming our guest list. Just weeks after signing our contract, another wedding booked the remaining rooms. While we didn’t expect Oakwood to hold rooms indefinitely, we were given inaccurate information and no warning, leaving most of our guests without accommodations.
Additionally, we and another guest reserved vacation homes through Oakwood, which were canceled two months before the wedding. We were told the homes were needed for a long-term tenant and an employee. The only options initially presented to us were for our guests to stay off-site, to reschedule our wedding, or to cancel our contract altogether. After several days of back-and-forth communication, Oakwood was eventually able to offer a handful of additional rooms. While we appreciated the final outcome, the process lacked accountability and proactive support, which made an already stressful situation more difficult to navigate.
Outdoor Space Double-Booking:
A large, multi-event wedding was scheduled the same weekend as ours, with overlapping times — one on the Lakeside Patio and ours on the Grand Lawn. We had to repeatedly ask for the other wedding’s schedule, as Oakwood didn’t seem clear on what events were happening or where. To avoid a conflict, we had to adjust our ceremony time, which was inconvenient for both parties.
Accounting and Finances:
Finalizing payment was frustrating due to multiple errors in our food and beverage contract. Oakwood changed their bar menu mid-year, and we were repeatedly quoted prices that didn’t match our original agreement. We had to double-check everything and advocate for correct pricing.
Oakwood delivered a beautiful wedding day with excellent food and smooth logistics. But the planning process was far from seamless. We had to advocate for ourselves constantly, fixing accounting errors, confirming menu and bar package details, and chasing down basic information. Weddings are a major investment, and without our vigilance, we’re not confident we would have been accurately charged. Whether due to miscommunication or broader coordination issues, it’s difficult to fully trust a venue that struggles to manage its own logistics. If you choose Oakwood, go in with eyes wide open and be prepared to stay actively involved every step of the way
The venue was beautiful and perfect. Did not feel well prepared with the wedding planner, but everything else was wonderful!
I photographed a wedding at the Oakwood Resort in May of 2019. The Oakwood goes above and beyond for their couples -- food, atmosphere, etc. It's a stunning venue with amazing view...
s, ample locations to tie the knot, and endless locations for portraits.
10 out of 10! Can't wait to photograph another couple there again!
Our ceremony was held at the outdoor gazebo and our reception was held in the Hilltop banquet center. We could not have asked for a more perfect August day and everything went smoo...
thly from start to finish. Staci was very organized in helping us get ready for the day and the golf cart shuttle getting guests to and from Hilltop was a huge plus. Guests are still raving about our food and overall, we could not be happier with our wedding at Oakwood!
My wedding reception was recently in The Hilltop at the Oakwood Resort and it was absolutely stunning. The food was fantastic, the bartenders and servers were friendly and efficien...
t, and the night was pulled together perfectly. I highly recommend this hotel as a wedding venue! It is the perfect location on Lake Wawasee.
Completely happy with our wedding here. Beautiful setting and great people to work with.
The venue itself was amazing! We used the Event Center and stayed at the hotel. It was so great to have the hotel right there. We got all our pictures outside by the lake and it wa...
s stunning. The food was delicious and bar service top notch. They worked with us every step of the way to get us what we wanted. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars was because the wedding coordinator was difficult to get ahold of the entire time.
The staff was great, the food was amazing and the view was perfect. I wouldn't have changed anything about the day!
We got married at the Hilltop building on September 10, 2016. The venue is absolutely beautiful and the food was amazing. We really did have the best night of our lives.

d with Kaila for most of the planning who was great but quit right before our wedding. This lead to some confusion and little details that were just forgotten but Julia and especially the younger girl (I can't remember her name at the moment) who were helping were both great.
However, Sharon, another wedding coordinator was unfortunately there right before the ceremony was absolutely awful. She was rude to my family and the bridal party as well as the groom and I. She was going on about how terrible everything was going and how we shouldn't have moved everything outside because it was sure to rain moments before my dad walked me down the aisle (it sprinkled for less then 30 seconds and the ceremony was beautiful). She also was very rude to our family members who helped move things outside when the weather cleared up.
Luckily she left shortly after the ceremony and the reception was a ton of fun and attitude free.
Oakwood is a beautiful venue for a wedding. However some of the event staff and summer interns left a little to be desired. The desk staff and salon were very helpful.
The front desk staff is great to work with and will block rooms for any out of town guests.
Our daughter was married on the shore of Lake Wawasee at Oakwood Resort on August 3, 2013. The reception for 100 guests followed at the Oakwood "Hilltop" overlooking the lake an...
d wooded grounds. What fantastic venues for both events!
Carol and Katie could not have been more accommodating throughout the planning process. They coordinated efficiently with the vendors to make sure the wedding day ran smoothly.
The hotel featured their own spa, nail and hair salon, which was particularly convenient for the bridal party. Steve and Todd were wonderful hotel staffers who made sure our guests had the best accommodations available.
If you're looking for an overall remarkable experience, I would highly recommend Oakwood Resort for your special day!
