In the end, everything worked out, but man was it an uphill battle. When my husband and I first went to look at Old School Square we were overtaken, it was exactly the venue we were looking for for our unique wedding. We dealt with their Events Coordinator for 5 months and then I tried contacting her for 6 weeks with no response. Finally, someone got back to me and said she had been fired and that we will now deal with a new person. This woman seemed lovely at first and we were willing to work with her even though she had never done this job before. She was always extremely difficult to get in touch with and then 12 days before my wedding the icing on top of the cake. We were doing our walkthrough when all of a sudden she casually mentioned that 3 weeks prior a bride had the police show up and shut down their food trucks, which were acting as her caterer. Well, I was going to be in the same boat in 12 days. The woman laughed it off and told us we should probably get a permit. We called the city and long story short we were not allowed to have our food truck. So there I was 12 days before my wedding freaking out and being forced to make last minute decor to make up for their stupidity. I emailed this woman and her boss explaining that I am also in customer service, how I deserve an apology and how I hoped this would be the last thing they withheld from me. Well, I never got that apology, they never even sent me acknowledgment that they had received the email. I could honestly go on forever about their carelessness but I won't. I will WARN future brides of their insensitivity they showed me and tell you to be cautious!
We changed our location 3 months before the wedding from Key West, to something local. This was one of the first venues I looked at. I knew it was something special. Michelle was absolutely incredible, constantly going above and beyond to make sure everything was running smoothly. Although they did have to keep all the doors on the outside locked day of, which made it difficult for some of the guests to get in, it was helpful, because people tried to walk in off the street. Michelle and everyone at OSS made our day perfect, and it was a killer venue! PS - get the bar package; you won't regret it.
Peggy Murphy was very available to help in our planning - even from out of town! I loved being able to celebrate my marriage in a place that was so dear to my childhood. All of our guests loved the historic and unique venue. We loved it!
I had a lot of friends recommend old school square to me when I was looking at different venues in the area. I didn’t think the old gymnasium was going to be what I was looking for but I went to check it out because i really loved that it was right in the heart of Downtown Delray. The minute I walked through the doors at the gym I knew I found our venue. The dark wood throughout the building was exactly the look and feel i wanted for my reception. The bistro lights gave the room a warm and whimsical feel, i was able to visualize my first dance under them. The upstairs balcony makes for a great mingle area, for those that didn’t want to be on the dance floor but take it all it, they had a bird’s eye view. It was especially great for my photographer and videographer to capture every moment. We used the balcony for the photo booth we rented, it was really wonderful to be able to have it upstairs because it didn’t allow the booth to steal the show and I still had tons of guest dancing the night away. The grounds around the gymnasium have a nice shaded area for cocktail area, lush trees that make for great natural back drops and the beautiful breezeway that makes for a perfect ceremony. Highly recommend Old School Square for anyone looking for a vintage feel in Delray Beach. The parking garage across the street is convenient for the guest to park and walk over and the Hyatt is also right there. My guest loved that they were able to walk from the hotel to the venue. We even walked to the hotel leaving the venue rather a getaway car. From other reviews I have read, its true you do have to have a grand vision to pull the gym together for the look you want. It was nice to have a blank slate to work with and make it just the way I wanted! The tables and chairs were provided by Old School Square and the chairs are GORGEOUS!
Old School Square is a great venue to have your wedding or event, however, only choose this venue if you are willing to put in a lot of work. The vintage gymnasium located in Delray Beach, Florida, is a bare slate that required a huge amount of decor and a big vision. It also requires you to rent just about everything. Not much is included. The only gripe that I have with them is that the air conditioner broke on the day of the wedding and for nearly 3/4 of the night, everyone was sweating. I will say though, OSS had people trying to fix it almost the whole night. The damage was already done though. My cake was melting and I couldn't enjoy the food because I was so hot.
We recently married at Old School Square and were very very happy. Location in the middle of downtown Delray beach was excellent for our out of town guests. Guests were also able to use free golf cart shuttle to/from hotels and through out downtown. Tables and chairs were included with reception room and ceremony room. Parking garage made for easy parking and Old School employees were very pleasant to work with.
I loved the historic feel and vintage look of the gymnasium. The location in downtown Delray Beach is PERFECT for out of town guests to enjoy when they're not at the wedding. The price for Old School was very reasonable and Peggy was very easy to work with.;Old School is maintained by the city of Delray so if you want something changed it may take time.
