We chose to have our wedding at Olowalu Plantation House sight unseen, by using reviews and photos online. It was important to have a private property so we didn’t have random onlookers which you often get when you have a beach or hotel weddin...g. The booking/contract process with the property manager, Donna, was very easy. She held our date until the deposit was received, and we received the damage deposit refund within a month after our wedding date. You are required to have a wedding planner in order to use this property, as well as liability insurance (our planner provided this). The House itself is old and charming. There is no A/C in the house, but our wedding was in November so we opened the windows and doors, which allowed a nice cooling breeze to go through the house. We booked the property all day, so arrived for 10:00am to get ready. The guys got the front room to get ready in, while the girls had the rest of the house. I was set up in the Bridal room which had a beautiful view out across the lawn to the ocean and it was so nice to be able to sit and look out as I sat having my hair and makeup done. The property is beautiful, clean, has a variety of vegetation/flowers, and is well-maintained. We only had 40 guests but the property didn’t seem too large or empty at all, in fact it was nice that we had plenty of space for everything (drink table, ceremony area, guest book table, cocktail tables and ottomans, bar, cake table, 4 dinner tables plus our sweetheart table, DJ table, ice cream sundae table). There are many beautiful locations for photos in the House and around the property. There is a full catering kitchen for your caterers to prepare dinner, 2 bathrooms in the house for the wedding party, bathrooms outside the house for the guests, and plenty of parking available. There is a locking closet to put your valuables in once your group is mostly out of the house (say during the ceremony/reception) so you don’t need to worry about anything being stolen that you lock up. We had our ceremony under one of the large palm trees overlooking the ocean. It could not have been more picturesque. We had cocktails and dinner set up on the concrete pad which we liked so the tables didn’t have to sit on the grass. The concrete pad was also used for the dancefloor during the reception. The sunset was stunning from southwest-facing Olowalu. A few guests found it a little difficult to find, but in all cases this because they were given wrong directions from their hotel (they were sent to the Plantation House, even though everything we sent out clearly stated the correct property name and address). We were able to get onto the property the day before to have a quick tour with our planner and photographers to decide on photo locations, as well as to have a ceremony rehearsal. It was a little disappointing to have to be off the property at 10:00pm (Maui law for outdoor weddings), but we thought that people typically start leaving weddings around then anyway, and some people who wanted to keep celebrating moved on to another location together. The only thing we were disappointed with was the use of sparklers was disallowed between us booking the venue and our wedding, so we sadly were not able to have sparklers as we had planned. Everyone commented that our wedding was the most beautiful wedding they had ever attended, and I’m sure that was largely due to the beautiful Olowalu Plantation House venue.
