Mark and I received several compliments from guests on the music during that time. Perhaps there was a communication problem as we never spoke directly before the wedding, only through Mark. I repeatedly asked you (via Mark) for a cake cutting song, a bouquet toss song, and a money dance song, but received no reply. I asked Mark again at the wedding which song to play, and said I’d play a classic- “Sugar Pie Honey Bunch” by The Four Tops. He agreed. One of my 8 sugar related songs for cake cutting. 60% of your guests were over the age of 50, and many of them were clapping along to the song when Mark’s assistant rushed up and told me you hated that song. I picked 3 other popular songs and was told you hated each, so I faded out the music while thinking of what to play. You rushed up to me after cutting the cake and cursed at me, demanding that I play Rufus du Sol. So I played one of his songs and tried to start the party. I played several other artists on your list including Empire of the Sun, Kascade, Childish Gambino, Lana del Ray, and more Rufus du Sol, but those songs cleared the dance floor. You disappeared and Mark told me to get people on the dance floor. I played "Brick House” and instantly everyone was dancing. I mixed into “Ice Ice Baby”, “Uptown Funk”, and “Billie Jean” and the crowd was loving it, no one sitting down. Then, your bridesmaid came to me and said to only play music on your list. So I did, and the dance floor cleared again. I had to deny several guest requests not on your list because I didn’t want you to yell at me anymore. Bruno Mars and Michael Jackson were the only upbeat dance songs on your list that the crowd responded to, so after playing their hits I finished out the night with the classic slow songs on your list like Frank Sinatra, Etta James, and Louis Armstrong. I played nothing from your ‘do not play’ list at any time. My priorities are: to make sure the guests are having fun, that the evening goes according to schedule, and that the music and microphones sound excellent. I accomplished all of those despite starting off the evening with an hour long delay from the entire bridal party. If you’d prefer only songs you’ve chosen and only in a certain order with no crowd requests or song anticipation, for your next event I’d suggest renting a sound system and playing from an iPod playlist.
