Working with Ben was the exact experience i was hoping for on our wedding day! i was looking for a more candid, documentary approach to our wedding photos. from our first consultation call to the wedding day, i felt like ben was listening to every word i said and made sure to craft our day perfectly around the direction. i had so many guests come up to me and say they barely realized we had a photographer there because he so seamlessly blended into our day. the final photos we got back were exactly what i wanted and captured every moment incredibly. it was a perfect balance of genuine smiles and happy moments blended with the necessary family photos. even the portraits were natural and don't feel overly posed at all. i can't recommend ben enough!

Hiring Ben was one of our best wedding decisions. He made the entire experience so pleasant and easy—from our first phone call to getting our final photos. Ben was always timely in checking in and so helpful in planning how he could best capture our wedding day. On the big day, Ben made everything feel incredibly seamless. I cannot recommend Silver and Salt Photography enough! We had the best experience with Ben. He was so helpful in figuring out how to structure our day and what would make the most sense for what we wanted. We didn't want a ton of formality around our photos and felt like it was more important to capture the feeling of the day. Ben more than delivered on this - looking back at the photos takes us right back to the moment. Hiring Ben and Silver + Salt was one of the best decisions we made surrounding our wedding. We hired Ben for the rehearsal dinner / welcome drinks and reception, which we are incredibly happy about. The way Ben documented the trajectory of the weekend definitely added to the final product, which was absolutely stunning. The different moments Ben was able to capture, ranging from the wedding party portraits to the intimate moments during prep to the raucous moments on the dance floor were all spectacular and came together in a portfolio of photos from the weekend that absolutely blew us away. The pictures we now have would have earned a stellar review on their own, but what made the entire experience even more impressive and meaningful to us was how much we genuinely enjoyed working with Ben coupled with the way that he blended in with the night. On the first point, Ben choreographed all of our pictures in a way that we never felt like we were being ordered around, and he was always able to get genuine laughter our of his profiles. (We even had a few people come up after the event and say how much they enjoyed their brief interactions with him.) Then when it came to the evening itself, we’ve been to weddings where photographers show up with crews of people and compromise some of the most special moments to take pictures of them. Ben was the exact opposite of this. He blended in incredibly well with the surrounding scene and was still able to capture all of the special moments in a breathtaking fashion without being intrusive or obstructive in the slightest. I cannot recommend Ben / Silver + Salt more highly and would be happy to do a reference call for him anytime.

Ben is the most amazing human and photographer! He was very communicative during the planning process. He listened to us and made sure he understood our vision. On the wedding day it was so hot and humid, and he was able to pivot immediately when I abruptly decided it was too hot outside. The final photographs are everything we dreamed of and looking at them makes my heart swell. My husband and I wanted our wedding photos to capture the "real" and joyous moments of the day, and Ben accomplished that beautifully! We laugh and cry looking through our wedding's candid moments - they really bring back the feelings of the best day of our lives. Ben is absolutely fantastic to work with. I literally have nothing but wonderful things to say about Ben! He is everything you could want in a wedding photographer- professional, kind, calm, funny, and prepared! I cannot overstate how incredible Ben was to work with, and how much I treasure the photos and how beautifully he captured the day. My partner and I had a rather non-traditional wedding which involved a fair amount of hiking and a lot of last-minute logistics. Ben was a calm and positive presence the whole day. I realized after working with him how important it is to have a photographer who has the right vibe - he was professional but also incredibly friendly and relaxed. I cannot count the number of family and friends who raved about how lovely he was! As for the photos, they are more than I dreamed of. I was drawn to his photography for how raw it felt. He seemed to be able to capture real moments in a way that was less rose-tinted-glasses and more strikingly real than most wedding photographers. When we got our first set of photos I cried. They were so beautiful, but more importantly they were so real. They are so many photos of my friends and family being completely themselves that so perfectly capture the day and THEM. Ben truly captured the essence of our wedding reception day through his journalistic wedding style, focusing on the heart of the events, the small moments in between, and the emotion of the day. From the beginning, Ben’s laid-back, approachable attitude made my husband and I feel comfortable. We had the absolute best experience working with Ben for our very small and intimate wedding. He was able to document our special day without interfering. We were not interested in too many posed photos but instead wanted more of a photo-journalistic style which is exactly what Ben is so incredibly talented at. He was extremely pleasant to work with and was very organized from the moment we first contacted him and thought it the entire wedding day. We couldn’t have asked for a better photographer and would absolutely hire him again!

We are so, so happy that we chose Ben to be our photographer. He is kind and easygoing. He is incredibly responsive throughout the process (not just before you sign the contract, but up to the wedding and after). He was amazing in person at our wedding--friendly but unobtrusive, great for our photo session, the session with our families, and, most importantly, the many many candids. We used Ben for our August 2021 wedding which was at an outside venue. From the moment we met Ben in person, we knew we had to hire him as our wedding photographer. Prior to our wedding day we had a phone call with Ben to go over the photography timeline and to organize which was very helpful. I can't say enough great things about Ben. We hired him pre-pandemic, and he was so accommodating and helpful while we scrambled to reschedule not once, but twice. He took the time to talk to us and really get to know my husband and I so that he could best capture our vision of the wedding. He is such a joy to work with. His calm professionalism and good humor were crucial during such a chaotic day! He also made it really easy to open up and be comfortable in our portraits and he captured a fantastic range of funny, sweet, and striking moments. There were many stressful things about planning a wedding, but our photographer definitely was not one of them!

After our initial meeting with Ben, we knew he was the photographer for us. He was warm, honest, funny, knowledgeable, and helped me consider wedding questions I didn't know to ask! He was very supportive and flexible during multiple COVID-19 postponing and flexible with our micro wedding. During the day, Ben was patient and fun! Ben is incredible for a lot of reasons. The first being, as two people who don't necessarily like to pose for photos, during the time he spent with us he made us feel extremely comfortable. He's very personable and charming and yet, during the wedding, you'd have no idea he was around taking so many pictures. We worked with Ben this fall for our wedding in Boston. Words are hard to come by for how wonderful he was. His quirky nature made our vintage wedding perfect with his style of photography. His Ideas are realistic and capture evey memory of the day people can miss with the chaos of the day. Highly recomended for timeless photos that you will never want to stop seeing.

We found Ben through a Google search for documentary style wedding photographers. My (now) husband and I immediately fell in love with his photographs and the fleeting moments that he captures. When we met him, there was no talking about whether or not we were going to book him - we immediately clicked with him and I knew from there that we had to have him photograph our wedding. From our engagement photos to the wedding day, Ben made us feel so comfortable, calm and kept us to our authentic selves. We just had our wedding in September 2020 and our final photos were delivered ten days after - so impressive! Our gallery was filled with moments that quickly brought back the memories of our special day. Ben's photos capture the emotion and the souls of those who are in the photograph and allows you to feel like you were there with them. Even in the middle of COVID, Ben asked everyone if they had any boundaries, wanted more space, etc. and was so accommodating. We LOVED having Ben as our photographer and as I said to my husband, I wish we could hire him to photograph all of our milestones in life!

I have never been interested in the extremely orchestrated/posed/airbrushed wedding photos. I wanted to find a photographer who could capture meaningful, candid photos of our quaint lakeside wedding. Ben overdelivered in the best of ways! The photos he took over the course of the day and a half he was with us tell a wonderful story of a wonderful time with family and friends. Ben came recommended to us from friends of ours and we are so thankful that he did. From our initial meeting with Ben we were sold on his approach to photography and after seeing how incredible our engagement pictures came out we knew we had made the right decision. Our only concern was that we had a wedding on the larger side (235 people) and we were worried about not having a second photographer. After talking to Ben we were reassured that he'd be able to capture everything and now that we've gotten our pictures back I'm happy to report he didn't miss a thing. On our wedding day I honestly don't recall seeing him, but after seeing the pictures it was evident it was everywhere. We're still not sure how he did it, he managed to be completely unobtrusive but completely capture the day and emotion. From the very beginning Ben was nothing but excellent to work with. Ben somehow managed to capture every emotion, smile, and genuine candid that happened on our wedding day. Not only is Ben truly talented at what he does but he is also so easy to work with. I'm not a huge fan of getting my photo taken but Ben made myself and my husband feel so comfortable and fit behind the scenes of our day so effortlessly. I honestly can't stop looking through our photos (all 500+ of them) because it brings me right back to that day. Ben, we will never be able to thank you enough for capturing our day so perfectly!

Ben was a really great partner to us and after meeting him in-person we were absolutely sold; he helped us envision how the day could unfold, and encouraged us to reach out at any point with questions. Of which we had many, that day and in the months before our wedding. He made us feel super comfortable on the big day even though it was 20 degrees out and we never did engagement photos - so it was our first "photoshoot". The photos came out absolutely amazing, exactly the look/feel we were envisioning when we sought him out - and we are super excited to get our physical album too. You won't be disappointed if you work with Ben.

My husband and I agreed that a photographer was one of the most important parts of our wedding day, and we were so fortunate to have found Ben. It is clear from his website that he is incredibly talented, but he also has a way of making everyone feel relaxed and comfortable throughout the wedding day and the months leading up to it. We left our first meeting with him feeling like we were friends and so excited about working with him. About a year before the wedding, he picked out some locations around Boston for our engagement shoot and spent way longer than he needed to make sure that we got all the shots we could have wanted. He even managed to get some great photos of our four-month-old puppy! For the wedding, he was an integral part of scheduling the flow of the day and took the time to understand exactly what type of photos were most important to us. On our wedding day there was no rain forecasted for the entire weekend but of course it started pouring ten minutes before our first look was scheduled. Ben kept both of us calm and managed to get all of our family formals in half the allotted time. He then pulled us away from the reception (we had told him that was fine beforehand) as the sun was setting and took some truly beautiful photos - our venue is even using one of them as their homepage. Our family and friends have been so impressed at how seamlessly he fit into the day and how wonderful his images are. We are able to relive the best day over and over again thanks to Ben and we are so grateful. We couldn't recommend him highly enough.

The best of the best! I'm not even sure where to begin! Ben photographed our small ceremony/restaurant wedding in May 2018 and we couldn't have been happier! My husband and I hate having our photo taken but Ben made us feel so comfortable and made it so easy! Ben has this ability of just meeting someone but making them feel like they are best friends who've known each other for years! After the wedding, so many of our family members asked if Ben was a good friend of ours and while we do consider him a friend, he is just that good at blending in and making people feel comfortable! Ben was always so quick to respond to any questions we had and offered his expertise throughout the entire planning process. Ben is - in a word - wonderful. My husband and I knew we wanted someone to capture our day authentically, especially the moments we would easily forget/not see during the craziness of it all. Ben's photojournalistic style fit in perfectly with our vision, and man, did he deliver. He shoots on Leica cameras, which require the highest of skill sets. As we planned for our wedding, we knew we'd want a second photographer due to the size of the party. Ben worked within our budget to find someone whom he would work well with and who would produce photos in a similar style to his. (hi Masha!) They worked very well together, and made for a very seamless experience. We scheduled an engagement shoot with Ben about a year before our wedding. It was October in Boston, and it ended up being a very cold and windy day, albeit sunny. Ben stuck with us through it, helped us think warm thoughts, and got some of the most beautiful shots. Fast forward a year to our wedding day in Newport, RI - which was much less sunny, and had a 60% chance of rain. While the rain held off, the wind and cold did not. Our wedding was indoors (thank goodness), but we wanted some formal photos outside. Ben suggested we go with our plan B location, which would at least block a little wind, and so we did just that. Ben maximized our time outside and also got some fun shots in our trolley on the way to and from Fort Adams. We recently received our full wedding gallery and each photo is better than the next. The shots of messy tables in the suites, my brother stuck under a chair during the Hora - honestly every single photo of the hora, the moms sharing a tissue, my husband's face as I walked down the aisle - these are the moments we never want to forget. And thanks to Ben, we will be able to relive our day for years to come. Aside from being super talented, he's the nicest guy, and super easy to work with. Ben has a way of keeping things organized. but also being very flexible. He puts everyone at ease (a quality that multiple people mentioned), and has such a calm demeanor. It is perhaps this calm that allows him to capture moments which lead to photographs that can elicit such fantastic emotional responses. We highly recommend Ben, and feel so grateful he was there to capture our day.

We had the absolute best experience working with Ben as our wedding photographer. He could not have been more friendly, professional, warm and enjoyable to work with. While planning, we communicated over email/facetime and although we actually only met in person on the morning of the wedding, we felt like we knew him already! He had a lovely way of giving advice and recommendations, while still being totally enthusiastic about discussing our ideas and questions. It's hard to put into words how incredible Ben really is. From our first email inquiry, to the delivery of our photos, Ben was beyond a pleasure to work with. Of all the varying components of our wedding, he was by far the most professional, and was thus the last thing I felt worried about. He was meticulous in his approach to understanding what we wanted, while staying true to his style (which was perfectly aligned). He asked thoughtful questions, and took careful notes about the varying dynamics of the event, and the people attending. He seamlessly integrated with our crazy families and friends, so much so that everyone thought he was a lifelong friend who just happened to be a photographer. His eye for detail, his calming and encouraging energy, and strong sixth sense for knowing exactly where to be became so palpable in the final product. He put everyone at ease, and even got my entire family to smile at the same time (this is a HUGE feat). Of course, everything about a wedding feels important, and it all goes by so fast. Even in the chaos, I remember wishing I had grabbed Ben to photograph specific interactions, only to find later that he was there all along, quietly capturing some of the most precious moments of the day. Going through our album, we laughed, we cried, we were absolutely stunned at things that we would have otherwise missed, remembered some things that already began to fade, and we got to witness how our people really made the day happen in ways we would have never known. Ben has an incredible gift, and he shared it with us as if it were specifically FOR us. For that, we are eternally grateful. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him again and again.

Ben was absolutely the best vendor we had at our wedding (and we had an awesome wedding!) He was immediately calming, incredibly organized, and completely unobtrusive. My wife had an anxious morning of getting ready, but once he arrived he immediately relaxed her, and he helped her push away the anxiety and start enjoying the day with her bridesmaids. After the first few formal photos, I don't think I "saw" him once, but he must have been everywhere at once because the photos and angles he took were beautiful. The photo journalism thing isn't just shtick. He really does capture some incredible moments throughout the day that I didn't even realize were happening. Some of his photos are beautiful works of art, and some photos are captures of amazing moments with friends. He was a pleasure to work with on the run-up to the wedding. He was responsive and friendly, and acted as a time keeper to make sure we didn't over-run our photo taking time. He has a great eye for photo locations. We didn't have to give him any guidance at all. He also didn't require us take any traditional cheesy wedding photos, which I appreciated (unless we asked for them!). We haven't gotten our album printed - but we are so excited to get it. If you're still on the fence about Ben, I promise you will not regret hiring him.

As soon as I found Ben's work I knew he was the right photographer for me. He was absolutely amazing! So easy to work with, and I trusted him completely to get all the shots I wanted without having to tell him anything. His style was exactly what I wanted, and the results did not disappoint. We had the absolute pleasure of working with Ben for our August wedding this past summer. I can not speak more highly of him. I had originally seen his work and was drawn to his beautiful photography that are truly works of art. We were looking for someone for someone with more of a photojournalism and fine art style to capture images from the day. Our photos came out so beautifully and we could not be more pleased. Ben was also so professional and patient when talking me through options of how the day could be structured. He helped us pick out some fantastic locations for portraits and our first look. It's so hard to find the words to describe just how wonderful Ben has been since we signed our contract. He went above and beyond all expectations—and mine were very, very high. His style is dramatic, capturing every detail and moment with an artistic perspective you'd see in an art gallery. Ben (and his wife, Connie) were our wedding photographers for our March wedding in Boston, MA. My husband and I cannot say enough good things about Ben, both in the planning stages as well as on the day of. From the moment we first started chatting with Ben, he was professional, fun, energetic, responsive and easy going. He offered creative suggestions and was extremely helpful in helping us create a photography timeline to ensure we captured all of the moments we wanted. On the day of, Ben and his wife were such warm, cheerful and calming presences. We had heard beforehand how important it was to hire a photographer whom you get along with since you spend a lot of the wedding day with them and we couldn't have been happier with Ben and Connie. They are truly wonderful and talented people who produce spectacular photos! We highly recommend them!

Ben was our wedding photographer, and we couldn't be happier. We were immediately comfortable with Ben and his approach to wedding shoots. A big priority for us was to have lots of candid photos and Ben did an exceptional job at capturing special moments throughout the day. The photos turned out great and guests commented how they barely noticed Ben throughout the night - a photography ninja! Before finding Ben, we had planned on using multiple photographers, but after talking to him and seeing his work we decided to only have him. The results were fantastic and we're so happy with how many wonderful photos we have. We were also worried about being camera shy, and Ben did a great job at putting us at ease - we can't recommend Ben highly enough!

Ben (and his wife, Connie, who we were SO lucky to have as our second shooter) did an amazing job capturing our day and I cannot recommend him highly enough. Not only are the photos awesome (we haven't seen them all yet but the ones in the overview album are AMAZING--it is going to be so hard to choose which ones to print and put in the album), but he was great to work with and knew just the right thing to say to everyone to get them looking natural and feeling confident. I want to have another wedding just so that I can hire him again.

My husband and I cannot fully express how wonderful Ben was as a wedding photographer. From the moment we met Ben through receiving the photos after the wedding, he was nothing but professional, responsive, seriously talented, and easy-going. Before the wedding, Ben took ample time to meet with us in person and communicate via email about what we hoped for in our wedding photographer. We wanted mainly candid photos with quite a few family and friend portraits as well. I've been in many weddings where we spent a significant amount of time taking formal portraits. With Ben, we seemed to finish the portraits in under 25 minutes, which was extremely impressive seeing as my side of the family alone has around 100 members. He somehow was able to give direction well while also being laid back about the craziness that comes with capturing photos with so many aunts, uncles, cousins, kids, etc. The portraits came out beautifully, and his candids were phenomenal too. Our wedding ceremony was in a church, and Ben was respectful and completely unobtrusive while still capturing photos from all angles. Our priest reiterated the same to us post ceremony. At the cocktail hour and reception, Ben managed to take photos of all guests--and we had around 180 of them. From our getting ready photos, to walking around Boston Common before the ceremony, through the reception, Ben was fun to be around, and made us feel even more relaxed. We were drawn to Ben's photos because of his photojournalistic approach. He has a unique ability to capture both genuine moments between people at weddings and also artistic shots. I loved the way he played with the lighting in many of our photos. Everyone who has seen our photos has been blown away by them. My husband and I are having a tough time choosing our favorites.

There aren't words to adequately describe how wonderful Ben is. Not only is he an incredibly talented photographer, but he is also super sweet and fun to be around. We chose Ben for our elopement reception after perusing his work on his website -- his photojournalistic approach was exactly what we were looking for and we are legit fans of his work! After meeting Ben and totally getting along with him right off the bat, we ended up inviting him on our elopement adventure in Patagonia. Along with his wife, who is also a wildly talented photographer, Ben joined us for 4 days of exploring Torres del Paine National Park and documenting our wedding activities. We had so much fun with Ben and Connie, both taking photos and just hanging out, and they truly helped make our day (and week) very special. We walked away with some unreal photos that we'll cherish for a lifetime. Ben snagged some amazing candid shots but was also adept at giving direction during more focused shoots. If the photos weren't enough, we also walked away with two new friends who we are so looking forward to joining us for round 2 at our reception! Thanks for everything, Ben -- you're the best!

I cannot say enough nice things about Ben as a wedding photographer - the man is truly amazing, and definitely has a gift. I could honestly go on and on, but here are just a few reasons why he was absolutely perfect for our big day. First, he met with us several times to talk about how we wanted the day to go, what types of shots we were interested in, and what was most important to us. And, most importantly, unlike some other photographers that we met with, really listened to us. I could tell right away that above all else he wanted us to be happy, and to have things go our way. This flexibility and mutual understanding allowed us to enjoy our day fully, without worrying if he was getting the shots we wanted. I trusted him completely, and since he is such an effective communicator, I knew we were on the same page. Additionally, this effective communication meant that we didn't have to pose for ages. When all of our portraits were done, I was shocked - it felt so short! Yet when our album came back, he absolutely nailed everything. Thirdly, everyone at the wedding could not stop commenting about how great he was! He blended in seamlessly, and was so easy-going. I honestly don't know how he got some of the shots he did, because at the time I didn't even notice him right in front of me. People are still commenting about what a nice guy he is! And of course...his photos. There are barely words that can do his photos justice. Above all else, we hired Ben for his stunning work, and boy am I glad we did! Ben truly has a gift when it comes to capturing the feel of a wedding, not just the play by play. We told him we wanted a fun, party of a ceremony that was very low on the traditions, and that really comes across in our photos. Instead of focusing on stuffy portraits and weird cheesy poses (though of course we have some stunning formals), he captured us just enjoying the day, naturally. As a result I have so many beautiful photos of everyone just having a blast. He captured my husband and I serenading each other on the dance floor, my friends rapping, my bridesmaids in tears of joy, babies laughing, relatives giggling, my husband's friend grabbing his bum after the ceremony...all of it. Flipping through our photo album makes me feel as though we are back at our wedding; all of the photos are so genuine, and each is truly something to treasure. In addition, a small number of his photos don't look like wedding photos at all, which I love. He got a few shots of the scenery and landscape surrounding our ceremony and reception. These honestly looks like works of art, and will definitely be framed for our walls. I viewed that as a bonus - hire a wedding photographer, and get some custom artwork as a result! I really could continue on and on, but I will leave it at this: if you want real, genuine, unique, untraditional photos with incredible composition and quality, all of which truly look like works of art, hire Ben! Plus he's a super nice guy!

Like every couple planning a wedding, my now-husband and I searched for a photographer that would provide us with perfect wedding pictures that we’ll proudly display for the rest of our lives. In our search, we came across a number of wedding photographs that were banal, sometimes bordering on cheesy, and we knew we didn’t want that. Ben Schaefer’s artistic sensibility struck us from the beginning. He describes himself as a photo journalist, and we think that’s spot-on. Rather than projecting his personality into poses and ideas, Ben thought carefully about how we’d planned our day and which aspects were most important. And from the early photos we’ve seen so far, we are pleased with his careful eye and aesthetic sensibility. And to top it off, Ben is a joy to work with.
