My husband and I wanted to share our love of the city with our guests from out of town and as soon as we stepped inside Smack Mellon Gallery, we knew we had found the perfect space for us. From the incredible views of the Manhattan Bridge to the vaulted ceilings and cement columns, it all gave off a raw, industrial vibe that we thought would work well with our theme of street art. The gallery doesn't feature installations during weddings, so it's a blank canvas for whatever you want -- which is fun for those who don't want a cookie-cutter event. As the gallery doesn't provide any tables or catering, you will be responsible for all rentals and other vendors, as well as the required insurance to cover those who don't already carry it. But working with the event liaison Suzanne Kim was a pleasure and she was always quick to reply to any questions. Many of our guests stayed dancing until the end of the night! Another bonus: a portion of your rental fee is considered a donation and can be applied when filing taxes.
As soon as we saw the place, we knew it was the perfect spot. Its soaring 40-foot ceilings, its old factory origins, its cement floors and columns, its floor-to-ceiling views of the Manhattan Bridge, it was all perfect. It's so beautiful in its stark way. Decoration would have been completely besides the point - and that was so nice. Suzanne at the gallery is great to work with, if a bit tough at first. but really, she's just trying to protect the space, which I understood. We had the ceremony there, and then we moved chairs around for dinner and dancing, and it was perfect. Although smack mellon lacks kitchen facilities, our catering went off without a hitch.
We fell in love with the venue's raw space industrial feel and its amazing views of the Manhattan skyline Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge.;There is no air conditioning.
