BSOLUTELY exceeded my expectations. Lauren was communicative and honest throughout the booking process, and Cherice was so responsive during the wedding planning process. Lauren did my hair and makeup trial for our engagement photos, and it felt like I had known her for years when I was sitting in her beauty chair. She truly worked with me to develop a hair and makeup style that made me feel beautiful and confident. Fast forward to the wedding day: the St. James team (Lauren, Emilee, and Eliza) were the ULTIMATE hype women. They treated my getting-ready crew with respect and listened to each individual woman's hair and makeup preferences. compelled to write this one. We signed a contract with St. James in February 2021, before COVID-19 vaccines were broadly available. Once vaccines became generally available, our venue introduced a policy of requiring them for all of their onsite employees and contractors. Given (1) the rise of the delta variant, (2) the fact that we have high-risk members of our group, and (3) there is no guarantee that our venue will not extend their policy to cover vendors onsite for events in the next 8 months (ie. Before our wedding), we felt it was necessary to get confirmation from all of our vendors of their vaccination statuses, especially the vendor whose job it is to touch our faces for several hours. We emailed all of our existing wedding vendors, and got near-immediate responses confirming positive vaccination statuses for all employees from every single one, except St. James Salon.
After eight days and several emails, we got a response from Lauren (the owner) and were told that (quotes copy/pasted directly) “We are more than happy to ensure that all team members for your event be either vaccinated or have negative COVID tests prior to your event, whichever would make you feel most comfortable in having a stress-free and relaxing day”. Unfortunately, after I asked to get this in writing, this stance was changed four days later to “We do not feel it to be in our integrity to require anyone to share vaccination status with anyone else, and in that will not be requiring any of our team members to be vaccinated to work with our team.” Given their seeming inability to provide a team of people who could comply with our/our venue’s possible requirements, she ended our contract on the spot. From our initial email inquiring about their vaccination status, it took two weeks to reach a conclusion, costing us valuable time in a wedding season that has seen vendors booked out months and years in advance.
Even beyond COVID-related concerns, our communication with St. James after signing our contract was flaky and off-putting. When I scheduled my “Dream Skin Consultation”, I received an email saying “Please honor my time by showing up to our session, on time, or notifying me at least 24 hours in advance should you need to reschedule.” Upon actually showing up for my appointment, I waited for Lauren for 30 minutes, until I ultimately determined that she would be a no-show. When we finally met, it seemed to be an opportunity for Lauren to recommend $356 worth of skincare products I probably didn’t need.

Initially, I had a great phone conversation with Lauren regarding what I was looking for for my trial and wedding day, she was very sweet. However, after the initial phone call I was getting super pushy vibes from St James and was a bit turned off, but still agreed to set up a trial for hair and makeup anyway. I scheduled the hair and makeup trial 2 months in advance, and made it for to the morning of our engagement party. After this everything got increasingly worse, honestly I felt like I was on an episode of punk’d (Ashton, I’m still waiting for you to come out from hiding)! About a month before, I reached out to the salon to confirm the appointment day and time and I didn’t hear back from someone for weeks (after many attempts from me). About 2 weeks before my appointment, I realized that no one had reached out to me in regards to what I would need to come prepared with (should I wash my hair before? Should I send pictures of looks I want…etc), so I emailed the salon, called them a handful of times in a span of a week and NO RESPONSE. By this time it was about 4 days before my appointment and I knew absolutely nothing. I reached out to Lauren directly and asked her if she could confirm details for me or I would be interested in knowing their cancellation policy, I got an email minutes later from someone at the salon confirming my appointment day, time, and details. You think that’s the end? No.. it just couldn’t be. THE NIGHT BEFORE MY APPOINTMENT I get a missed call and voicemail from Lauren telling me that my appointment had to be moved due to a wedding situation. Honestly, my jaw dropped. After weeks, and frankly a full month, of just radio silence after I patiently and kindly waited to hear back about my appointment, and after so much frustration this is what I end up with? Im not sure if you’ve ever tried finding someone to do hair/makeup for you 6pm on a Friday night, during wedding season, the night before an event, but it’s is nearly impossible and I was absolutely defeated and disappointed. St James made my experience stressful and frankly just terrible. I was left to fend for myself the morning of my engagement party, and let’s just say I was really sad about it. I won’t forget the terrible customer service I received from St James, there was not even basic respect offered to me. Im not sure how someone expects anyone to go through with a company after an experience like that- if you can’t even make it for my appointment that you yourself booked and said you were available for, how am I supposed to count on you for my wedding day?

I did a bridal makeup trial about eight months before my wedding and loved working with Lauren. What really made them incredible, though, was their organization and professionalism for accommodating the very large group that requested services the day of the wedding. Instead of a traditional, uniform crew of bridesmaids, my wedding party consisted of cousins, aunts, my mother and my grandmother, with a range of ages from 10-79 and a range of hair and makeup preferences to match. The team from St. James made sure everyone felt like the best version of themselves. Perhaps the best compliment is that my 21 year-old cousin initially told me she wanted to do her own makeup for the wedding because she had gotten her makeup done professionally for prom and hated it so much she didn’t trust anyone. Lauren was completely understanding and offered a full refund on her services and rearranged the timing of the rest of the appointments to better accommodate the number of people that were now going to be having services completed.

Koree rolled with it and gave me exactly the look I was hoping for using just photos I showed her, no trial! I was in communication with Lauren to set up details and book our team; she was easy to work with and very kind and professional when my first makeup trial did not go well. I especially enjoyed working with Koree (hair) and Michelle (makeup). They both checked in with me about the look throughout the process and did a great job making my vision a reality.
A team of four came to do on-site services and arrived on time and well prepared with everything they needed. They were all nice to work with and my bridal party was satisfied with their looks and thought the team did a good job making sure they were happy with the results.
