We took 2 beginner lessons here, 2 weeks apart. Lori was tremendously helpful in providing personalized feedback, going out of her way to help us progress, and thinking of skills in different ways to help things like turning click for us better...
! Lori even took my boyfriend down the beginner run hours after our lesson, which greatly improved his confidence and allowed us both to go from bunny slope to beginner run in just 2 visits!
My only request from Sundown is to add at least one vegan option in the lodge!!

Our family was so impressed with Sundown! We were visiting family in Dyersville and made the short trek over on a whim and are so happy we did! It was the BEST way to kick off the new year and one of our favorite memories as a family. We arrive...
d just in time to pay, book a lesson, get our gear and head out! We were on the mountain less than 20 minutes after we arrived and everyone was very friendly and helpful! We did have to get shorter skis for the kids per the ski school instructions but they took care of that exchange quickly for us and Harper started the lesson without the skis, which was impressive and appreciated. She quickly took our kiddos (6,8) from never having been on skis, to learning how to turn, pizza, French fry and do the “Sundown shuffle”. She took them on the magic carpet and also on the beginner chair lift! They adored her and would have spent all day with her if they could have. After their lesson, we spent time skiing as a family and had the best time in the beginner areas. The sunset was gorgeous and skiing at night was so fun with all of the lights! My only disappointment was when I asked the front desk if I could leave a tip for Harper (we didn’t bring cash but found an ATM as we were leaving), the girl was not helpful in problem solving how we might do that and the ski school teachers had left for the day, or so it appeared! So Harper, if you’re reading this please know how much we appreciate you and how much fun the kids had! It’s all they’ve talked about today! Thank you, Sundown, for the best first skiing experience for the kids— we will be back!

I would like to preface my review by saying Sundown is fantastic for the Midwest, they’re good at making snow, the terrain park is typically full and often has new features, and the staff is friendly. I’ve probably been to sundown 20+ times and...
this is my first negative experience and it has NOTHING to do with the skiing or staff. I don’t know what kind of dirty water they’re running through their snowmakers but it has absolutely ravaged my cars paint. I let this dirty water accumulation sit on my car for less than 24 hours and my car is ceramic coated, and still it has etched my clear coat on my ENTIRE car. I suppose having to paint correct and reseal my car for hours isn’t the worst outcome here. I know they can’t control wind conditions but it would be nice if they could try to prevent some overspray into the parking lot.

Sundown is an excellent small ski area in driving distance from central Illinois. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rentals are done efficiently, and the food at the lodge is tasty. The skiing is what you might expect where most of the sn...
ow is manmade, but it makes for an excellent weekend away from the winter blues of the prairie.

Staff at ticket booth are not friendly at all. The girl that I went up to didn’t say a word to me, I stood there for a while and it looks like she was having trouble with my Indy pass. She called over an older lady and seemed to be asking her q...
uestions, still said no word to me while I’m standing there. Finally the older lady told the lady next to her to help me. I gave that lady my Indy pass with my picture on it, then she asked if that was me. Like duh, no it’s someone else’s Indy pass I’m using.smh Of course it’s me, there’s my picture on it and even though I have a mask on you can clearly see it’s me. The place was so small. Even had teenage boys on the lift with me ask why I’d drive 4.5hrs just go to Sundown, I told them because it’s on Indy and I’m going to Chestnut the next day. Even the locals don’t feel this is a good hill. They told me Chestnut is a lot better and they were right. Better runs, views, and service. I probably won’t go back and only use my 2 Indy passes at Chestnut next time.
