On my wedding day, everything was perfect... except for the cake. We had a package with our venue that included a cake from one of two bakeries. Susie’s was one of the choices. My husband and I wanted something special for our wedding than the ...usual vanilla, so I contacted her with our flavor choices and she said it wouldn’t be a problem to make those flavors. The added cost (which was paid to her bakery directly since we were selecting options outside of what the venue package covered) were very reasonable. So we went in for a tasting and we were so happy with the quality and flavor of the cake! Super moist and really rich.
We sat with Susie and went over what we wanted: the 3-tiered cake, different flavors for each tier, and decorated in all ivory buttercream. She seemed nice overall, but had a slight attitude about her that I didn't encounter in any of my other vendors. She even asked about my other vendors at which I discussed my selections with her and once I told her the florist I selected, she went on and on about how I needed to be careful with that florist. I thought it was kind of inappropriate but just chalked it up to personality differences. I should have seen it as a red flag, but we were so happy with the cake tasting that we just kind of wrote it off.
The day of the wedding the cake we got was dry and lackluster. The flavor was dull. The cake was also covered in white buttercream, not ivory as I specifically requested. Only the decorative swirl bands were ivory! It tasted more like a supermarket cake, not the wonderful quality cake that we sampled at the bakery just a few months ago. And the filling was so thin, you could barely taste it. During the reception everything was going so well and our guests were happy with the wedding celebration so my husband and I just went with the flow but afterwards I just couldn’t get over it. We paid extra money for subpar cake. It was the only imperfection in our otherwise amazing wedding day. Our other vendors delivered beautifully, and I married the most wonderful man. So in the grand scheme of things, it’s a small blip on the radar, but I still feel it's worth sharing this experience with other brides.
