The bottom line: Elliott was hard to communicate with, made excuses, did not dress professionally for the ceremony and then had to bail and leave a replacement for the reception. T...he entire experience lacked professionalism and I would not recommend him.
When we first decided to consider Elliott as our DJ, I submitted a form on his website with our wedding details. After over a week, I had not heard back. I ended up sending him an email directly. He responded right away and we set up a call. The vibes were great on the phone and he seemed so sweet and like he was able to accommodate whatever our vision was. We booked him right away as a DJ and to play violin for our ceremony.
At the 2 month mark, we reached out to get some details on his violin setup for the ceremony and confirm some of our music choices would fit his skillset. I emailed twice several days apart, then when I didn’t get a response I texted him. Once it had been over a week and I hadn’t heard from him, I got concerned that he was ghosting us. I reached out to our coordinator who recommended him, and she was able to connect with him and procure a response. He cited an issue with his email and gave us an alternative address to use. This didn’t explain the absence in the text reply, and the email address I used was fine when I initially reached out to book (it was how I got him to reply when he didn’t answer his website inquiry).
We spoke on the phone and it was clear that he had not kept any notes of our initial conversation. It was like we were having our first conversation all over again. I was a bit worried but it was too late to change course.
Since then, he was more responsive, but response times were inconsistent. About 2 weeks before the wedding we reached out to try and get a sample of the bridal entrance song since we requested a piece he had not done before. He gave us a date it would be ready by, then when that passed gave us an excuse for the delay and promised a new deadline. Then when that deadline passed we got another excuse. Finally we did end up getting the sample we asked for and it was satisfactory.
On the day before the wedding, Elliott sent me a typo filled text message letting me know he could not stay for the entire wedding and that another DJ would be filling in for him. He said and I quote, “I will have to be during the ceremony” (meant to say leave during the ceremony) and “I am still providing all of the violence services.” As a violinist I would have not expected such an unfortunate typo as I’m sure he types the word violin every week of his life. He cited a personal conflict but at that point I was not primed to take his word. We’d heard so many excuses for every delay and snag so far. I couldn’t do anything but try not to be stressed out that after all this work to make this DJ work with us, he would be bailing halfway through the event.
In the end he did perform the violin for the ceremony and all of the music we planned happened as we expected it. I do have to add that Elliott’s outfit for the ceremony was not what I would have expected at all. I didn’t think I needed to specify this type of thing but I thought musicians generally knew how to dress for performances. He was wearing a plain white t shirt with tennis shoes and some casual pants.
Overall, I cannot recommend Elliott as a DJ. He needs to work on his communication, his follow through, and his professionalism if he is serious about working in the wedding industry.
