I ordered a small heart shaped cake for my wedding on 10/3 and requested the words ‘til death’ to be written on it, a pretty common saying for a wedding cake. Imagine my surprise when we go to do our cake cutting the day of and the word TIT is written on my wedding cake - yes you read that right they wrote tit death on my wedding cake. I’m not sure how that was missed throughout the whole process, you would think before writing the word tit on a wedding cake you would think to maybe double check that… I’m really not sure how this could’ve happened other than laziness and extreme lack of attention to detail. When I reached out about my concern I was given a partial refund only for the design fee
The buttery provided desserts and a wedding cake for our wedding this past weekend. They were great about communication throughout wedding planning. My only complaint is my own fault; we should have ordered more desserts because people loved them so much and they were gone so quickly! Our cake was delicious (marionberry top and lemon bottom), and was the perfect size and look (naked cake with wild flower decorations). I highly recommend them for your event needs!
Our cake was exactly how I had envisioned and absolutely delicious!! Highly recommend!
Ordered a cake tasting plate and as soon as we walked in we could tell how disorganized the place was. It was not ready for us upon arrival, and it was a bunch of sloppy cupcakes with sharpie writing on the box for what the flavors potentially were, as they were written with multiple people debating on what flavor was what. Needless to say we will be taking our business elsewhere.
Got so many compliments on how tasty our carrot cake was for our wedding! If you are considering The Buttery for your cake, make sure to get at least one tier as carrot cake (it's what they're known for). I only wish we had more to take home!
No response for ten months, disappointing and unprofessional.
We are very happy to have had the buttery do our wedding cake. It was absolutely delicious and just how we ordered it. I could not have been more pleased with the whole process. Thank you kindly!!
The Buttery did such an amazing job with our wedding cake! Virginia was so easy to work with, great communication, and the cake turned out exactly the way we wanted it!
There was a slight issue with the flowers our florist dropped off her to use and handled all the communication with the florist to ensure the flowers on the cake were prefect.
I highly recommend the Buttery!!
Ok listen, my husband and I are food people. The cake at our wedding had to be amazing. We taste tested at MANY bakeries and the buttery was the clear choice. We had the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting as our wedding cake and then the same as cupcakes as well as chocolate with Marion berry filling as cupcakes and people were LOSING it over how good they were. They were also so beautiful. They delivered to our venue and made the whole process so easy and seamless. We very highly recommend the buttery!
My husband and I hired The Buttery to make our single tier wedding cake and a ton of pies. We were beyond happy with the results! Our guests absolutely loved the apple, apple crumb, cherry and marionberry pies. Our wedding cake was lemon poppy seed with Italian buttercream which was delicious. We will definitely be using and visiting The Buttery every chance we get!
If you want absolutely delicious cupcakes for your wedding, look no further! We chose The Buttery for our small wedding cake and wedding cupcakes after doing a few different tastings in the area. The Buttery was able to accommodate our request to have both a cake to cut and 6 different flavors of cupcakes, and even worked with our florist directly to add some flowers to the cake!
The cupcakes were one of the most raved-about part of the wedding and were SO good that they were all eaten before the end of the night! They were easy to work with, accommodating for our many requests even during COVID, and make some absolutely delicious cakes! I would highly recommend them for your wedding cake and cupcake needs!
We hired The Buttery for our daughters wedding. Our daughter and son-in-law opted for a small individual cake for themselves and a variety of desserts for the guests. Nothing but compliments from everyone on the variety of choices and the flavors, ie lemon tart, eclairs, cupcakes, cookies & cake pops. Delicious!!!! If I had one critique it would be the total number of items we ordered. We had a lot left over. So, would have been helpful if the bakery could have assisted us in a final count of items.
The cakes from the buttery and wonderful and delicious. Communication was a little difficult and conflicting at times but they were understanding when we had to change our wedding date due to the pandemic.
My husband and I enlisted The Buttery to make our single-tier wedding cake and 45 cupcakes for our guests. No other bakery would do for our intimate wedding ceremony and reception. The flavors and textures were unparalleled and the design was fresh and flawless. Our guests knew from their first bite why we drove down to Santa Cruz from San Jose to pick everything up the day before and could not stop at one flavor option. We ordered a single-tier Neapolitan cake with buttercream frosting as well as Mint Chocolate, German Chocolate, and Chiffon Marionberry cupcakes. We will be enjoying cake from The Buttery on every upcoming wedding anniversary! Thank you!!
My now husband and I chose The Buttery for our wedding cake, and we couldn't have been happier not only with the service but with how beautifully the cake came out. Exactly how we had envisioned it! The cake tasting was so helpful and the baker we worked with was patient and listened to our ideas and found us the perfect mix to make our delicious cake. Will definitely be using The Buttery again in the future.
My husband and I recently got our wedding cake here for our wedding in July. The cake tasting offered lots of delicious options and we were very happy with our wedding cake. It was both delicious and beautiful and they delivered it on time with no problems.
The wedding cake was elegant and delicious. Perfect ending to the wedding and was later even featured on a wedding blog. We couldn't be happier.
All I can say is - Seriously delicious! Everyone raved about our cake at the wedding. We had a three tier cake with three flavors (carrot, neopolitan, and chocolate) with the white chocolate buttercream frosting. The cake turned out exactly how I wanted it and eceryone was friendly and super easy to work with! The carrot cake was the biggest hit (not your average carrot cake!) sooo good!!
The cake was beautiful, the changes they made to their base flavors to accommodate us turned out great, and everyone loves it.
We ordered our wedding cake from the Buttery in Santa Cruz! The best wedding cake on this planet. I am tempted to order it again for fun. The Grooms cake was carrot cake flavor and all of our guests really enjoyed it. Jill was a delight to work with as she has such a great eye for detail.
My wedding cake was a delicious as it was beautiful. The Buttery was wonderful to work with especially Jill who is in charge of the wedding cakes. My cake was delivered to my venue. It was four tiers and two different flavors. I recommend the carrot cake and the chocolate fudge.
The Buttery was one of three vendors we tried out for our wedding at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We worked with Jill, their cake consultant. Jill was extremely welcoming when we arrived, and wasn't at all phased that we were a same-sex couple. The consultation room is very nice - it's away from the hustle and bustle of their very busy bakery, well lit, and there are nice display cakes in a variety of styles and colors to give ideas. Jill started by showing us a picture book of their work and also collecting information from us/giving us information. This part took about 30 minutes. We had some vague ideas, but nothing very solid, and this was the first of our three appointments. Jill was able to guide us through the design process and helped us make decisions. She was also very accommodating - there were a few things we weren't ready to decide, and that was OK.
The best part, of course, was the tasting! We got to try 8 or 9 different flavors, along with a couple of filling options in little cups. The presentation of the cakes was really nice, but what we ended up appreciating a lot was the portion sizes - each slice was quite large. We ate less than half of each while we were there, and Jill packaged up the rest for us to take home. This actually made a really big difference - we did a second tasting on our own the next day. It helped a lot to refresh our memories (and taste buds) about what everything was, and we actually had slightly different opinions the second time around than we did the first time.
The options were all delicious. We ended up choosing two flavors:
- the chocolate cake with the chocolate ganache filling, and we added the ollalieberry jam with whipped cream as a second filling
- the carrot cake (which they make with coconut in it. Sounds kinda strange, but it's AMAZING!!!)
Now, I'm a cake person - I love cake in general (if it's good cake). The Buttery's carrot cake is the best I've ever had, and the chocolate cake was also in the top 3. My wife, on the other hand, isn't a cake person. She doesn't like cake. She eats it sometimes if she has to. She especially doesn't like carrot cake, and she HATES coconut. She LOVED both flavors of cake we selected. Need I say more?? :)
We were very happy to have plenty of leftover cake after the wedding - it took us weeks to polish it off and we were sad when it was all gone, although the scale is better for it. On Jill's advice, we got a separate "keeper" cake for our 1-year anniversary. It was delivered to the aquarium along with our main cake, but it was already pre-packaged by The Buttery's staff - the cake itself was wrapped in plastic, then boxed, then bagged in more plastic. I'm pretty sure it would keep for way longer than a year in our freezer. I'm also pretty sure it'll meet an early demise.
We were extremely pleased with every aspect of our interaction with Jill and The Buttery - we will definitely be repeat customers, and highly recommend them to anyone getting married or needing a cake for any special event.
The Buttery made an absolutely stunning and delectable cake for our 75 person wedding! Everyone commented on how fabulous the cake was and how they'd never had chocolate cake as good.
We selected The Buttery for our wedding cake and were not disappointed. With the assistance of their wedding cake planner Jill we were able to create our cake to show the design and colors we needed to complete our Beach themed wedding. The cake was absolutely gorgeous and everyone raved about the taste and intricate starfish/shell design. Their Carrot, Neapolitan and devils food with chocolate ganache & caramel mousse was absolutely a cake connoisseurs dream. It was wonderful to work with such a great team of people. This bakery has it all, great pastries, cakes, cupcakes, sandwiches and coffee to make everyone happy! A true Santa Cruz gem!
We chose to have the carrot cake for the top and middle layer. We choose the white cake with fruit filling for the bottom largest layer. It came out beautiful! The flavor and design is exactly what we wanted!!!! We froze our top layer for our one year anniversary. I will definitely be back for another anniversary to recreate a smaller version of our cake! If you like carrot cake.... This one is the best!!!
After tasting all the Santa Cruz options for wedding cakes, we had no choice but to go with the Buttery. Their cakes look amazing & taste equally amazing. So many of the competitors were dry & dense, but the Buttery's cakes are moist & flavorful & delicious. Their buttercream icing is tasty & goes on so smoothly you don't NEED to suffer that pasty fondant coating to get a pretty cake. Our design sessions/tasting was tough since we didn't come prepared but their portfolio gave us enough to close on an idea we both liked - and their execution day-of was perfect. It looked beautiful, tasted great, and arrived on time. With wedding cake, it's expensive, so minus a star for value, but if you're settled on wedding cake the Buttery is the way to go!
Our cake from The Buttery was more incredible than I ever could have imagined. The cake design was mainly my husbands idea (he's a graphic designer) and although I agreed with his ideas, I didnt full grasp the overall image of what the cake looked like...until I saw it. And it was stunning!!! It was so perfectly done that people actually thought it was fake.
Oh, and I can't forget the taste. It was DELICIOUS!! I can't wait for my 1st anniversary so we can dig into the top teir that's in our freezer. And yes, I have gone back to The Buttery since our wedding in May and have had more of their amazing desserts. I absolutely recommend The Buttery and for more than just wedding cakes.
My goal was to have a wedding cake at my wedding at Seascape Beach Resort that looked good, but most importantly taste good! I have gone to so many weddings where the cake was definitely not worth the calories.
The Buttery is your cake destination! We were able to go cake testing and taste 7 different flavors. We chose two for our cake. Jill, the wedding cake consultant was awesome to work with and listened to what we wanted. Our cake was EXACTLY what we wanted. While we had some great recommendations prior to choosing the Buttery, we are so glad we did! I will use them for other events in the future hands down!
I picked this vendor to do my wedding cake based on reviews, and I wasn't disappointed. I was a little worried because the cafe itself seemed to get mixed reviews, but everyone reviewing their wedding cakes gave excellent reviews.
My fiancee and I showed up five months before our wedding for our cake tasting consultation. We got 8 giant slices of cake of varying flavors and frostings- way more than we could possibly eat in one sitting. The coordinator actually gave us a box to wrap the leftovers in so we could enjoy the extra at home. We were given the option to mix and match flavors and frostings as we wanted, and could even vary the type of cake in each tier of our wedding cake. We ended up picking a white chiffon cake with white cream and ollaiberry jam for the middle tier, and a devil's chocolate cake with chocolate fudgy ganache and ollaiberry jam for the other two layers. She showed us three different photo albums of cake designs, as well as encouraged us to bring our own pictures and color swatches. We didn't have anything particularly specific in mind, but we settled with a basic white cake with floral and berry cuttings (including blackberry vines/berries).
The day of the wedding the cake was delivered without a hitch that I'm aware of (I was busy getting ready for the wedding). It was the best wedding cake I've ever tasted- I will gladly boast that to anyone. I'm generally unimpressed with most wedding cakes- they usually taste plasticy or boring. Not mine. =D
Thank you!
Cake was a little drier than the sampling, but the Neapolitan was better than I remembered
The Buttery was easy to work with, and the cake was beautiful and tasty. My only negative would be that I felt that they "upsold" us with the amount of cake that we would need per person. We had a lot left over. But, it's the best red velvet cake that I've ever had!
They made me the most beaufiful cake I've ever seen. It was exactly what I asked for. It tasted delicious. No complaints. It was perfect!!! It arrived on time.
Everyone thought the cake was beautiful and at first thought it wasn't a real cake because it was so beautifully made and decorated! The cake was delicious too. We had layers of carrot cake and red velvet and they were very accommodating to our special requests to have walnuts mixed in with the carrot cake layers.
Their cakes are the best and the customer service couldn't have been smoother. A little pricey but all wedding cakes are really.
I don't even know where to start. My family has been a fan of The Buttery for years and buys their cakes for all sorts of events. It made it an obvious choice for our wedding cake. They have a delicious selection which was nice since my husband and I have different tastes - he's all about chocolate to the max and I like something a little lighter. I just brought in a picture of what I was looking for and it came out beautiful! If you haven't had one of their cakes then I recommend trying one just because and their expertise definitely follows through to their wedding cakes. Their staff is always friendly and easy to work with. Definitely a pleasure.
Loved my wedding cake. Rum and chocolate square layers with Fondant frosting and small roses around my Eiffel Tower cake topper! What a dream come true. Jill was very helpful!!
Everyone knows the best cakes in Santa Cruz come from the Buttery but I thought they would be out of my budget. I was wrong - their prices are comparable to other bakeries in town and their product is 1000 times better. Jill is professional and friendly. The cake tasting was amazing - we had leftovers just from that for days. Guests adored our selections of their famous carrot cake and chocolate cake. The cake was elegant and they worked with my florist to design a fresh floral topper that matched my flowers. I can't wait to dig into the anniversary tier in the freezer!
MOISTEST, most scrumptious, tastiest, most quality cake EVER! Flavors galore too!
The Buttery has a great reputation around Santa Cruz and is simply the place to go for your wedding cake! They are not the cheapest out there BUT you don't get cheap either. We choose Carrot Cake & Chocolate Cake and yum yum yum yum! Our guests loved our choices and I was a little bummed that we didn't have alot of cake left over. I wanted more :). Jill at The Buttery has been there a long time, knows her stuff, and even went above and beyond to help me surprise my parents with their own wedding cake to cut at my wedding in honor of the 50th Wedding Anniversary. I'm looking forward to my one year anniversary, just so I have an excuse to get a small cake. Also, they recreated the picture of I cake I had brought in and did a fantastic job duplicating it. THUMBS UP for The Buttery!
I tried several bakeries before I found myself at the Buttery. Do yourself a favor and go here first.
They provided us with something like 12 cake samples, and they were huge. Almost all of them were out of this world. It was almost a problem that we had to narrow it down, because we wanted to use ALL of them. We ended up choosing three and they were perfect.
Then we chose the design. They didn't force me into fondant, which I can't stand, and they were still able to make the design I wanted. Sweet! I also ordered a groom's cake in the shape of a football, and it was one of the most spectacular things I've seen. They did such a wonderful job with both cakes, and the service was great. I will absolutely drive to Santa Cruz for my next cake!
The Buttery has the most delicious cakes! We had carrot cake, white with lemon filling, and hazelnut chocolate. Every layer was as good as the last! If you haven't had cake from The Buttery, then you haven't had real cake!
I loved our wedding cake! It was delicious and very pretty. I did feel like they overestimated the amount of cake people will eat, no matter how good it is!
SO amazing. The taste of the cakes was fantastic and was also very beautiful and great value.
I can only give 3 stars because the service I got was terrible! I went in for a tasting last August and Jill took care of us, it was wonderful, I felt that she knew what I wanted, I had pictures and everything, the cake was soooo yummy and we paid half of the total cost before we left. Well I was very surprised by the customer service I got after that first meeting. I called several times, left voice messages and written messages..I needed to know what kind of ribbon to get and when they needed it by. The first message I left also informed her that I had sent in the rest of what we owed and the map to the venue. Around the fourth time I tried to get a hold of her, we finally talked and she was clueless on what kind of design I wanted, told me I hadn't sent in to rest of what I owed(which I know they had received because they cashed the check) told me I needed to send in a map to the event(which I had sent along with the check and then rushed me off the phone because she had another consultation...I could go on with all the things that happened there after, but I wont. The only reason this is getting any stars is that the cake was excellent. But customer service sucks!!
The buttery did an excellent job with our cake. It was delicious and looked perfect. It was the best wedding cake I have ever had. We got the napoleon cake which is 2 layers of white chiffon cake and 1 layer of flourless chocolate cake and we had ollaliberry filling inside. It was so good!
Amazingly beautiful--it didn't even look like it was edible! It looked like it was made of porcelain. We had a 3-tier devil's food cake with hazelnut and chocolate ganache (tasted like Nutella, yum!), covered with white chocolate buttercream then covered that with white fondant with cobalt blue damask design. I brought a paint swatch of the exact color I wanted, and they made it happen. Tasty, beautiful, what else could I ask for??
Our Buttery wedding cake came with our Chaminade package. I have never enjoyed carrott cake, but the Buttery converted me. Their carrott cake is now my most favorite cake ever!
Amazing cake flavors and beautiful designs!! Love this place!
The first time I had one of The Buttery's carrot cake cupcakes, I knew what my wedding cake was going to be (and this was before I was even engaged!). And that is what we got. And we were not disapointed.
You know how at most weddings, you can't really remember what the cake tasted like or even if you ate any? Not the case here. Our guests not only finished every last bite of our wedding cake but asked us where it was from and how to get more (really!). Needless to say, it was a big hit.
The only one drawback was delivery. My wedding was in San Francisco, about 70 miles from Santa Cruz. The Buttery would not/could not deliver, so we had to scramble to find someone to take it up for us. The Buttery did try their darndest to find someone we could hire to deliver for us, but in the end no one came forward. They also helped us design a cake that could withstand some travel. Fortunately I had a brave friend willing to take on the responsibility, but just something to keep in mind if you are planning to use the Buttery for a wedding outside of the Santa Cruz area.
If you are looking for a SUPERB cake that people will be talking about for a long time to come, a beautiful cake at a reasonable price, go to the Buttery.
