I ordered and paid for my wedding veil in June 2023. I’ve called and emailed several times and no response. My wedding is in 3 weeks. We stopped by the location yesterday Sep 2 and their stores is empty. They are no longer there and don’t know where my veil is. I don’t think I’ll be getting it. I had a horrible experience!
I would absolutely not recommend them to anyone. They have been extremely difficult to get in touch with over the past few months and multiple times I have had to work with the designer directly to get anything done (I got some custom additions to my dress). My dress has been finished for almost 3 weeks and is still sitting at the designer's shop because The English Dept. hasn't gotten back to her either. And today we got a call from a "seasonal worker" (who was very nice and tried her best) to let us know that they are on vacation until next week!! I understand everyone needs a break, but this is the busiest season for weddings and they didn't even leave anyone in charge who could get these things done, or anything in their notes about who the designer was or what dress I ordered. The in-person initial appointment was great, but everything since then has been absolutely unprofessional and very frustrating. Looking back on other reviews, it seems that the lack of communication and potential stealing of money is not just an issue I've had. I've talked to multiple people now who have paid them and not received their dress. I would HIGHLY reconsider going to them for your wedding dress. I've also reached out to a few designers that they stock and have been told they are aware of the issues, so it's not just me that is experiencing this. I'm at the point of being very glad my dress is still with the designer as I don't feel confident at all that they would get it to me if it were still with them. We have paid them a significant amount of money and the designer hasn't seen any of it.
With my dress being a month late, it was incredibly hard to get any return phone calls or communication about what was going on. When I did get an email back, I felt gaslit for being concerned they had lost pieces of my dress and made to feel like I was the problem with no dress, 7 weeks from my wedding. Then I read reviews from multiple other brides with this exact scenario. Disappointed with my whole experience. Should have bought a dress off Etsy since you still have to pay $800 in alterations for a 'bespoke' gown.
This was my first (and last) wedding dress shopping stop, and I could not have asked for a more wonderful experience. The beautiful boutique is elegant and cozy, the dress selection is unique, special, and well curated, and the staff is talented and kind. I was never the little girl who dreamed for years of the perfect dress, but the minute I stepped into my Claire Pettibone gown - the third dress I tried on - I knew it was the one. Annie did a phenomenal job of listening to the details I wanted to incorporate and the features I wanted to accentuate, and she expertly helped me select what ended up being my dream dress. So much love for this sweet little shop.
This boutique is cute. I went here multiple times to try on dresses, and the ladies here were very helpful. I ended up buying my dress online but they helped me figure out what look I wanted.
Wow, what can I say. They helped me find the perfect dress and I felt like I was a member of their family! Best place to get a dress by FAR.
This was the only dress shop I went to. I had seen a photo of the dress I wanted online and went to this shop specifically for that dress. I tried on some others, but ultimately went with the one I went there to see. I was the only one in there the day I went so I had the full attention of the storeperson. It was nice to have some help but not be overwhelmed by salespeople trying to push dresses on you. The style of dresses in the shop were very simple, affordable, yet still very beautiful. If you're looking for a more simple wedding dress style (not a big satiny poofy dress) then this is definitely the store for you.
Recommended highly! I found a beautiful dress and they were very helpful to me even from many thousands of miles away. Would recommend to anyone living or traveling to Portland
My experience at The English Department was exquisite! It was so personal, low pressure and fancy. Two of my close friends and I showed up first thing on a Saturday morning and had the place to ourselves. It is a small boutique and when someone else came in we went and grabbed lunch to think about the dress options.
