HISTORY of SAM HILL WAREHOUSE President Abraham Lincoln established the Arizona Territory in 1863, and when gold was discovered a year later on Granite Creek, Prescott became the territorial capital. Soon, the Arizona Central Railway was opened, and it became a branch of the Santa Fe. 9 years later, the Santa Fe, Prescott, and Phoenix Railroad connected Prescott's growing mining areas with other towns and railroad lines. The railroad bolstered mercantile supply to Prescott, resulting in new dry goods and mining supply stores, and the most successful was Sam Hill Hardware Company. The original building is on Whiskey Row at 156c S Montezuma and is home to Prescott Western Heritage Foundation Museum, where it can be toured at no charge. The Sam Hill Warehouse is a unique cultural and historic treasure; revealing the importance of commercial activity in Prescott's history. It's one of the few remaining large commercial buildings of its era that survives in its original, beautiful design. 3 freight entrances provided access to the warehouse. The two on the south wall have sliding door panels that are still functional; trains stopped just outside these southern doors, and supplies were transferred into the warehouse. To the immediate southeast of the warehouse is the original Santa Fe railroad trestle bridge, which spans Granite Creek. Both structures are on the national historic register. The train track crossed over the bridge and proceeded east of the Hilton Garden Inn, across Montezuma Street, to the Prescott Train Depot station (currently home to Realty One Group). This is a wonderful venue in which to make your own history.
