The Inside Scoop
FROM THE KNOT EDITORS
The First Look
The Guenther House is a restaurant, museum and store located in San Antonio, Texas. Built in 1859, it was the home of Pioneer Flour Mills founder Carl Hilmar Guenther. The Guenther House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and located on a bend of the San Antonio River, hosts indoor and outdoor wedding receptions as well as rehearsal dinners and engagement parties. Couples can rent the entire Guenther House after the restaurant closes or rent only the Roof Garden or Arbor, which are available from 6 p.m. to midnight.
The Roof Garden is the upper level space in the Guenther House. It's a large, airy room that was once the ballroom in the Guenther residence with an adjoining open terrace that overlooks the San Antonio River. The Roof Garden features a well, fountain, brick fireplace, porcelain tile floors, ceiling lanterns and wall sconces. It accommodates up to 70 guests.
The Arbor, with it arched canopy, provides a space for outdoor gatherings. Ceiling fans assure there will be a gentle breeze on warm days. The elegant canopied space is surrounded by flowers and lush landscaping and is steps away from the San Antonio River.
The Guenther House includes four rooms in addition to the Roof Garden and the Arbor. The River Mill Store features a line of baking products and cooking utensils. The Museum displays Pioneer Flour Mills memorabilia as well as Guenther family photos and personal keepsakes. The Parlour is part of the original structure and its Victorian decor includes a crystal chandelier, dramatic window cornices and gold leaf wall mirrors. The Restaurant's 1920s art nouveau decor includes stained glass ivy window panels. The Guenther House accommodates up to 200 guests.
