Love this venue - it's so charming! We had a small wedding (50 ppl), so it was perfect for having an outdoor ceremony and indoor meal (6 tables of 8). The place is spotless, bright and airy and has a lovely porch and patio for speeches and cake cutting. It's a beautiful setting, with lots of places to take great pictures. The ONLY drawback is that it's in the flight path for DCA, meaning the planes going over are LOUD! In hindsight we should have used microphones, which we thought we wouldn't need for a small group.
The venue is beautiful and very well maintained. Sharon is responsive however she lacks any sort of flexibility. She is also difficult to deal with and can be unpleasant at times. There are a lot of rules for the house. Overall the venue is awesome but the management has poor customer service.
The venue is gorgeous, and amazingly secluded, considering that it's only a mile or so from downtown Arlington. A couple of people tramped through the park with their dogs (despite, ahem, the visible signs saying that there was a private event in progress), but otherwise, it was just us.
We had about 50 people, and I think that was exactly enough to fit comfortably inside. One thing to note is that the buffet room and kitchen are on same circuit -- Sharon told us during our walk-through that a fuse had blown during another wedding due to a large coffeemaker, so we had to nix our planned omelet station.
On the upside, there is a built-in arch in back of the house and plenty of bathrooms (2 on main level, 2 on upper level, and 2 outside on bottom level). The venue also offers several 6-foot tables and a couple of 4-foot tables, which we used, as well as dark blue hotel-y chairs that we didn't. I also love the bridal suite, which is pretty and comes with a mini-fridge and its own bathroom -- although it ended up being not *quite* enough space for us plus the hair and makeup folks and all their equipment (11 of us, total -- me, 3 BMs, 2 moms, female ring bearer, and 4 hair/makeup folks).
Sharon, the venue coordinator, is extremely responsive. That said, she's not always the easiest to work with (she can be a bit brusque and inflexible). The biggest issue arose when Sharon told the caterer to come 2 hours later than we had discussed at the walk-through -- WITHOUT telling me or my wedding coordinator. So you can imagine the panic on the day of the wedding, wondering where the heck the caterer was.
Overall, it's a gorgeous venue and a convenient location at a great price, but beware unexpected (and sometimes seemingly arbitrary) restrictions/limitations.
We had a fabulous wedding at the Hendry House two weeks ago. Sharon Casey was responsive and easy to work with from the start. Many guests told us what a beautiful location it was.
While it was hot and humid, fans in the tent helped and the house was air conditioned so folks could take breaks. The ceremony area with the wisteria arch was lovely, and most of it was shaded after 4 when ours started. The bridal suite was very spacious and handy for us to get ready. Easy rear load-in access to the catering kitchen made it a breeze for the caterers to set up. We saved a ton of money in that they allowed us to bring in our own alcohol as long as a licensed caterer served it.
Plenty of parking, lovely grounds...ample space for the ceremony, tent, and a lawn for games. We had a buffet and the cake set up in the dining room, escort cards & gift table in the front room, cocktail tables, slideshow, and photo booth in the large room. There is some airplane noise but not bad at all. Many lovely spots for photos on the landscaped grounds.
And so affordable for a Saturday night in the summer in the DC area! They don't seem to advertise at all--I'm lucky a friend told me about it. We couldn't believe there was no wedding there the previous beautiful Saturday when we stopped by. Couldn't be happier!
My husband and I used the Hendry House for the location of our reception and cocktail hour, and we absolutely loved everything about it! The Hendry House is located in a residential neighborhood with an old, historical feel to it. The house has been renovated to include newly painted rooms, and a speaker system and A/C throughout. The house manager, Sharon, did a couple of walk-throughs with us (as we live out of state), and discussed all possible options for the location.
Based on our estimated guest list, we went with a tent out on the lawn for the reception, and the cocktail hour featured the first floor of the Hendry House, and also wrapped around the porch and the patio. We could bring our own alcohol (which was a bonus!), and also had to provide the caterers, tent/accessories, and audio equipment. One down side to the location is because it's in a residential area, the music must be shut off by 9:30pm. The day-of, the caterers shut off our music right at 9:30pm, and although I would have liked to party for another few songs, I knew already about the time limit. As soon as the music stopped, we just shrugged and headed on over to our after-party! Also, the location is right in the middle of a flight path, and while we could hear/see the planes during our walk-throughs, we couldn't hear ANYTHING during the actual day.
Additionally, the house is surrounded by a beautiful, green, wooded area, which made our pictures/first look at the house look incredible! I liked how reserving the Hendry House was just the reception/cocktail hour; it allowed for a personalized feel, instead of using the same company for everything. Absolutely recommend the Hendry House for any parties or weddings!
We had both our ceremony and reception at the Hendry House in Arlington, VA. It is a beautiful property tucked away in a park within a residential neighborhood. The weather cooperated so we were able to get married outside under the trellis as planned, and all the guests commented on how lovely the park and the house are. We had our reception in and around the house, with dinner under a tent on the patio. They require that a vetted tent company from their list provide the tent, but are flexible about allowing outside vendors as well as providing our own alcohol. Overall, a great experience.
The Hendry House at Fort CF Smith Park is truly a hidden gem in Arlington! We stumbled upon it in what seemed like an endless search of affordable, outdoor venues in Northern VA that held parties over 100. The old home and beautiful park were exactly what we were looking for to fit our vintage, intimate wedding style. Sharon was easy to work with. She responds quickly and is very nice. She is not a coordinator or planner, but can point you in the direction of vendors to assist.
The only con to mention; The park is in a residential neighborhood, which means music must be off by 9:30 PM. If you're expecting to dance all night, you won't be able to do it here. I was a little worried it would feel like we didn't have enough time to celebrate after dinner and all the formal events were over, but it was perfect. Our dance floor was going right until 9:30 and no one complained about it ending early.
We are so happy that our wedding took place at The Hendry House, a quiet beautiful spot in the middle of a park with great photo shots for a wedding! Our wedding size fit perfectly in front of the home and the venue is perfect for a wedding with less than 70 guests. We barely fit in the home, however, the manager on site, Heather, was flexible and worked well with our caterer and planner to get us all in. The Hendry House was the most affordable venue in the area in our opinion, despite still being a little pricey, but that's what you get when living here! The contract with the venue has a long list of things we could not use or do such as using flower petals or sparklers, however, we understood that it is a historical site and the grounds are very well kept. We definitely recommend this venue, it's worth looking through!
The Hendry House was the first venue we toured when we were looking at places to hold our ceremony and reception. Nothing we saw later topped it - it was beautiful, available on a day that worked for us, convenient to the city, and relatively inexpensive. We particularly appreciated the free shuttle from the Courthouse Hilton Garden Inn for our out-of-town guests.
The venue/grounds were beautiful and perfect for our small spring wedding. It was budget friendly and since we are Arlington residents (it's an Arlington County Property) we even received a small discount. Sharon was excellent to work with, very responsive and provided great advice/incite regarding the set-up/layout for our event. We had our ceremony out front and were fortunate to have a gorgeous day. The reception was inside the house and spilled out onto the patio and grounds. It was perfect! As other reviewers noted - the venue is on the flight path to Reagan airport so you may hear some planes above but it we barely noticed it. Also, all events must be over by 9PM (as it's a residential neighborhood). Our event started at 4PM and ended at 9PM which worked out great. I would highly recommend this venue. The property is gorgeous and Sharon is excellent to work with!
This venue was beautiful and Sharon was a pleasure to work with. In the DC area, it can be difficult to find a reasonable priced place that offers everything you need, and we found just that at the Hendry House.
