We were recommended this venue by my dad's boss who attended an event here. This was the first venue we visited, and knew we wanted to get married here straight away. However, we visited several other venues around Chicago to ensure this was th...e right choice for our big day.
First, the positives: Katherine is amazing. Her warm, welcoming, kind, sincere, and professional demeanor is what made us feel comfortable signing our contract. The venue itself is stunning, and has the perfect balance of indoor and outdoor spaces, and the Air BnB above, is a HUGE bonus, as we stayed there the night of our wedding, and made logistics so easy, saving us a night at the hotel.
Unfortunately, as soon as we paid our hefty deposit (this was the most expensive venue we looked at - and The Joinery does NOT include a rehearsal which was a HUGE negative, as every other venue included one free of charge we visited, they don't allow you in until 2:00 PM on your wedding day, which was the LATEST arrival time of all venues, and they will not hold items for you before/after, and if you ask, they make it seem as if you are asking for a limb from their own body, and are quite rude about it), Katherine pretty much left the story. Yes, she responded to a handful of emails, but we were left dealing with her assistant... lets just say, if we had to deal with the assistant from the beginning, we NEVER would have signed our contract. She was rude, condescending, cold, completely disinterested, and during our walkthrough, she legit stared at her laptop the entire time, working, barely looking up at us, our planner, nor vendors that were present. My husband normally doesn't speak up about other people, but even after leaving, he was shocked at her rude behavior, it left an awful taste in our mouth.
We feel The Joinery reflects the ugly grind of the wedding industry in Chicago: they charge and nickel and dime you for everything, with having an expensive venue cost. Parking, a rehearsal, early load-in, etc. are ALL charged extra and are NOT cheap. We refused to pay for any of it as we were so upset at how high the cost was for the venue deposit and venue itself. Would we recommend this venue? Yes, with caution. Be mindful they will drop the warm, welcoming communication once you pay them. We also highly recommend using their vendor preferred list, it changes often. The only reason we weren't truly unhappy with this venue was our vendor team (they were top notch) - try to utilize vendors through the Green Wedding Alliance. FIG, Naturally Yours Events, and Cage and Aquarium were three of our favorite vendors, and they all have been at The Joinery several times, so zero stress.
The only positive part that ended our experience with them was Billy. On the day of our wedding, he was a ROCK STAR. Our family, myself, my husband, we couldn't stop raving about him. If we could recommend anything, I would have Billy train your assistant in terms of interacting with clients, or drop her all together, as our interactions with her is what made us drop the two stars to three.
