We were married June 1st at the Liriodendron and the staff that were there that day were incredible. They checked in on us and made sure the day ran smoothly and worked great with ...
our other vendors. From touring the venue, the rehearsal, and the big day, they were all so incredibly helpful and supportive. The venue itself is gorgeous but the staff is who truly make this venue amazing.

The Liriodendron Mansion was the second venue we toured back in 2024, and we instantly fell in love with it.
Tucked away in a quiet Bel Air neighborhood, the mansion was once home...
to Dr. Howard Kelly — one of the founders of Johns Hopkins and the inventor of the Kelly clamp — before being sold to the county.
The exterior is breathtaking, with two elegant porticos framing each side of the house. Behind the mansion, you’ll find a spacious patio that can comfortably seat 60–70 guests for dinner, surrounded by lush greenery and soft string lights overhead.
The staff were wonderful throughout the entire process — from our initial walk-throughs to day-of coordination — and made everything feel seamless.
If you’re looking for a venue with timeless charm, romantic ambiance, and a covered outdoor space perfect for dancing and cocktails, this is it.
I highly recommend visiting — you’ll fall in love just like we did.

We're so happy that we chose The Liriodendron for our wedding in May! It was the PERFECT location for us. We had a lot of family members that lived nearby. We also had about 55 gue...
sts which this venue was perfect for. We loved how beautiful the mansion was both inside and outside. We did an outdoor ceremony and a indoor/outdoor reception. We used just about every room for our wedding. Cathy and her team were also incredible. They were very responsive to our questions and everything went very smoothly. I would 100% recommend.

We held our brunch wedding at the Liriodendron in mid-May. The venue was absolutely beautiful and made for an incredible wedding day! The grounds themselves were a great environmen...
t for our spring wedding with wondeful tree coverage and vibrant greenery. The venue met with us on multiple occasions previously to help assist and plan where they could. The venue has a list of approved caterers, of which(at least in our case) helped immensely with the whole process and are all familiar with the venue and the wedding process there. They also provided us with multiple options based on weather and this helped us be prepared for any situation the day of. Overall, it was a great and non-stressful experience working with them and our caterer in planning our most perfect wedding!!

rincess! They were so accommodating throughout the entire planning process. We not only rented the space for our ceremony and reception, but for our rehearsal dinner as well. Due to Covid's restaurant restrictions, it was super difficult to schedule a rehearsal dinner. But Leslie saved the day by offering the Liriodendron for an additional hour on our rehearsal day. Thank you for being so amazing!

The Liriodendron Mansion and Leslie were amazing! We had to postpone our big celebration from March 21, 2020 to August 1, 2020 because of the pandemic and Leslie made it so easy to...
pick a new date (and essentially plan our wedding again). The bridal suite is absolutely perfect! We got some amazing pictures on the gorgeous grounds and all of our guests were raving about how pretty the grounds and the mansion were, especially at night! We fell in love with the Liriodendron from the minute we walked into the house. We did a smaller wedding (approx. 65 people) and the interior of the house and the gardens provided ...
more than enough space for our guests. One reason we chose the venue was its flexibility - you have multiple options for both indoor and outdoor ceremonies (depending on weather) without feeling like you're sacrificing anything. This venue also has many vendors who do repeat business here, which turned out to be great for us since our vendors knew the venue inside and out.
There was only one "fly in the ointment" for us. Being a historic home, sometimes repairs and renovations are needed to keep the home in top shape. One such renovation was in progress during our booked weekend: exterior stucco repair work that left visible grey "streaks" on the outside of the otherwise soft-white stucco exterior. The venue was not able to paint over this stucco parging in time for our wedding due to the amount of rain we've had this year, which of course is very understandable. In the end, it wasn't an issue for our photographer, and none of the guests seemed to mind it, but what did surprise us was that the venue representatives didn't give us a heads-up about this ahead of time. We noticed it for ourselves when we arrived at the venue for the rehearsal, and we were also the ones who brought up the topic with the venue reps once we were there. Your contract with the venue does state that repair work on the building may be taking place during your event, which we agreed to when we signed it, but from a client-relations standpoint we just felt like a phone call or email ahead of time would have been appropriate. This was just a small speedbump on an otherwise great wedding at a fantastic venue.

We couldn't have asked for a perfect venue for our wedding. We worked with Leslie from the initial tour all the way through to the wedding itself. Very professional, good communica...
tion, and always prepared!
The Liriodendron will provide chairs, tables, and stands if you require them, which is a huge plus. They allow you to arrive early to setup for your wedding and give you plenty of time for tear down. The location is very easy to get to and there is also plenty of parking.
We shopped around looking at quite a few venues in Maryland, and not only did the Liriodendron impress with how gorgeous it was, it was very economical as well.
It unfortunately rained on the day of our wedding, but Leslie called the day before and helped get everything set up for the day of. Although we really wished the wedding could have been outside to show off how beautiful the mansion and surrounding area was, the interior is just as beautiful. The mansion is well kept, clean, and feels very classical. When the wisteria is in bloom, you simply cannot find a more beautiful place to host a wedding.

The first word I think of when hearing the Liriodendron is magical. It was perfection. The venue, the garden, the lights, and the architecture in general. I loved everything ab...
out that venue. It POURED the day of my wedding, and even though we had to go to Plan B, it was still stunning. The team there was so nice, and Leslie, their director, was always quick to respond to my emails and requests. Their contract is very sensible; I did not feel overly restricted or turned away from my ideas. Get married at the Liriodendron, you won't be disappointed.

We loved this venue! We had a late March Sunday brunch wedding ceremony and reception with Dean & Brown catering and can't say enough positive things. If you go with Liriodendron, ...
I highly recommend also going with Dean & Brown because they work so well together. We spent a long time looking for affordable options and didn't think we would be able to have something this beautiful in our price range. It was much colder than expected (snowing) on our wedding day but even without the outside space, the inside was beautiful and there was plenty of room for just over 50 guests. We got married in front of the main fireplace and I was able to bring my own decorations for the mantles and the stair railing . Since we were coming from out of town, they allowed us to drop off most of our things the day before (even though they were setting up for another wedding). We were able to make payments when it was convenient for us. They were so accommodating and the value was amazing!

The Liriodendron was a beautiful venue for our October wedding. We went with the Sunday Brunch option (50 guests) and it was the perfect option since we wanted a small and intimat...
e wedding. All chairs and tables are included in your rental which is great, and the price can't be beat.
There are two things that I felt weren't totally perfect that are worth mentioning for other "Type A" brides. First, be prepared for the insurance policy they require you take out for your wedding day in addition to your rental. We were told it shouldn't cost us more than $100 and it ended up being $500 which is a lot when you are budgeting. Second, communication was a little less efficient than I would have liked at times, but I understand that they are first and foremost a Historical Property, and not a wedding venue so I didn't get too hung up about it.
Leslie was super personable, and was very patient working with me and my million and a half questions during my year of wedding planning. We even changed our date at one point and she was great working with us to get everything switched over.
I would definitely recommend The Liriodendron to any couple looking for a classy, reasonably priced wedding venue for an intimately sized wedding.
Response from The Liriodendron Foundation, Inc. on 11/06/2017
Thank you so much for the 5-Star review! We are very glad your wedding turned out to be al...
l that you expected. We have heard a wide range of costs for the liability insurance requirement, and $150 seems to be the most common. For the lag in communication at times, it was probably due to a high volume of wedding inquiries - which is a good problem for us! And yes we are a historical property (but adapted for contemporary use) and we are a popular event venue. Our best wishes to you for the future!

Only downside was there were bees flying out of one of the columns during the ceremony. However, we worked around it and it was not big deal. Actually it made for some hilarious photos.

we signed the contract to the day of the wedding, was fantastically helpful and kind. As soon as my now husband and I walked the lawns of the Lirio, we knew this was our venue. The house itself is gorgeous, the lawns and flowers were a perfect backdrop, and Dorothy ...
Francis was great to work with. Google images of the Liriodendron Mansion and you too will fall in love. The best part of it is, the cost is not as pretentious as you might think; we paid a total less than $3500 for 75 guests. The venue is ideal for accommodating around 100 guests. Dorothy provided us with a list of preferred vendors for catering as well as business cards and flyers for florists, musicians, photographers, liquor, etc. The set up of the house can be difficult for some musicians/DJs and there are rules that come with renting a historic house; however, the beauty and benefits of this house far outweigh any of its quirks. Our guests were in awe of the venue and enjoyed walking the grounds and viewing the house. Everyone had so much fun. My only complaint is that we had to leave. The Liriodendron will not disappoint.

I chose the Liriodendron Mansion for my wedding reception because my grandfather worked in the gardens there and when he passed away a trail was dedicated to him.
The mansion is...
a beautiful setting inside and out. The trellis covered in wisteria on the front porch is breathtaking even when it isn't in bloom. The grand staircase entrance was magical.
We rented the venue for the whole day so the bridesmaids, my mother and I got dressed there and went to the church for the ceremony and came back after for the reception.
The only minor drawback is that there are specific rules about speaker placement (no speakers outside) because the mansion is in a neighborhood. This affected the DJ being able to announce certain things and people outside not hearing him.
It was the perfect day though.

Liriodendron was perfect for our classic, winter, vintage wedding. The house it self is ornatly decorated and needs very little added to it for a wedding to look beautiful. My colo...
rs went along great with the feel of the space. The value is great, we were able to use a winter special which included rental of all chairs and tables and the use of the 3 large fireplaces in the reception space. Several people asked how I had heard about the mansion and said that the space was perfect for our smaller wedding of about 100 people. Because the mansion is historic and does offer tours to the public during the week you can't really move any of the furniture or have candles lit so if that is important to you then this may not be the space for you. We used the battery operated candles and it worked perfectly for us.

I loved the Lirio. We wanted to make sure we found a nonprofit site for our wedding, and this gorgeous historic property was great for that. It was a good price to rent too (and su...
pposedly tax deductible?), which freed up our budget for other things. It's absolutely breathtaking for photographs, with tons of outdoor space, a beautiful Gatsby-like facade, a gorgeous staircase that makes for dramatic entrances, a small bridal suite with a private bathroom, and plenty of space for outdoor dinner seating. They do make you choose from only 7 approved caterers, but Dean & Brown is on there, so we were fine with that (they were the best!). Our only complaints are about inflexibility on the part of the property "guardians" ... We were a little irritated that they refused to allow us on the property before 5:30pm, and just simply won't unlock the door, even if there's no one using the house or no tours planned. This means all the set-up, prep, and pre-wedding photos had to be done in a SUPER FAST RUSH for our 7pm wedding, which I feel in retrospect was too late to start a party, and made for a quick night that felt smushed together. But maybe that's all weddings! The house host was there to keep watch, but made herself scarce all night except for a few smiles and waves, which was welcome. The mosquitoes (in early June) were negligible despite the thick woods behind the lawn, and there were plenty of spaces for our 100 guests to move around freely. However, at the end of the night, the woman in charge of locking up asked our DJ to cut the music 15 minutes early, which we hadn't been informed of before, so we had to screech to a halt in order to squeeze in our last dance. We also had to have EVERYTHING out of the house by midnight, so there was a mad dash to clean up all our decorations and throw them in the back of a car. All in all, a little more flexibility on the part of the property watchers would increase the value of the place, but if you're alright playing within those confines, it's an incredible, amazing, beautiful space.

d, especially in the off season, and on weekdays, but even weekend rates are affordable compared to what others are charging for the same amount of space. We have a very small wedding, about 30-40 people, so it was nice, although I think the mansion can accomodate at least 100 people. You have so many indoor and outdoor options. Honestly, I don't know why this place isn't 3 times the price and booked for years in advance. Not only was Liriodendron so beautiful that I almost didn't even need a florist, and...
not only did I fall in love with it at first sight, but I was absolutely stunned to see that it was also the cheapest venue that I looked into renting.
Needless to say, I booked it right away. And thanks to Liriodendron and its very competent staff, the one word everyone has used to describe my wedding has been "perfect".
Still, every place has its pros and cons, so here is my official list:
PROS:
- Lirio has two huge, covered, open-air wings so that you can have a plan A, B, or C based on the weather.
- The interior is gorgeous, with large, wide doorways downstairs and a hidden kitchen, so people didn't even know where the caterer was prepping.
- The porch area is wide enough to fit tables on with plenty of room to spare, and has four huge metal arches covered in wisteria going over it, like a private garden
- There is a ridiculous amount of free on-site parking
- Lirio is close enough to Baltimore to be within 15 minutes of pretty much whatever hotel you want to stay in
- Lirio is surrounded by flowers, flowering bushes, urns with flowers, flowering trees... you get the picture. Really, the only reason I need ed a florist was for the bouquets. No additional decorations were necessary.
- The staff was very friendly and professional, and had plenty of advice and suggestions to make everything as seamless and stress-free as possible.
CONS:
- You cannot choose your caterer, period. The caterer we chose, however (Dean and Brown) is fantastic and incredibly affordable (see my review of them)
- You have to pay extra for the rental of tables and chairs, but this was still well below the price of other venues in the DMV
- It's a bit hard to find at first, since you have to go through a neighborhood to get there, but it's obvious one you get to the address itself that you have arrived - they have an amazing driveway and gates and such
There are some standard historic building restrictions:
- You cannot move some furniture
- No fire allowed, you have to use LED candles
- They're pretty strict about hanging things, I'd expect them to say no rather than yes to any requests
Overall, if I could point to a reason that my wedding was absolutely flawless, it would all stem back to my choice of Liriodendron as my venue. I absolutely cannot say enough good things about it.

My husband and I selected the Liriodendron Mansion for our venue because it is in a secluded location away from the big city, yet easily accessible from the interstate. From the mo...
ment we met with the coordinator, we knew this was our venue. Known as the "House that Love Built", it was built by Dr. Kelly, one of the founding doctors of Johns Hopkins, for his wife. It is on a beautiful property surrounded by nature, and maintains the look and feel of its original condition from the late 1800s. This is a very affordable venue for a small to medium (120ish) size wedding. The setting is gorgeous, and the mansion is much more interesting than your typical hall/ballroom. There is plenty of on-site parking as well which is a huge plus! I definitely recommend this venue to anyone who is looking for a non-traditional venue!!

My wedding was absolutely perfect from beginning to end, and it all started when I found The Liriodendron. I am from out of state and chose to wed in Maryland so that my grandpare...
nts wouldn't have to travel far to be in the celebration. I knew that I wasn't going to be married in a church, and that I didn't want to have a hotel ceremony/reception, so I started by searching for indoor/outdoor venues. I have to say that the website looked promising, and the prices even more so compared to many of the other venues I looked at...but when I called and began speaking to the executive director, I felt that I was in great hands. As it turns out, I absolutely was. My mother drove down from NY and she and my grandmother scouted the place out and went to an open house. They loved it so I went for it. Dorothy the director was accessible, helpful, warm, and seemed genuinely enthused to be a part of the big day. When I finally made it to town to see the Liriodendron (after I had booked it) I fell in love. The setting is just lovely. I was fortunate enough to have perfect weather, so we had a beautiful ceremony on a covered portico and a reception on the opposite portico and adjoining porch. Had it rained that day, we could have set up inside and been just as happy. The daytime wedding was perfect though. We had a Sunday noon ceremony with a Sunday Brunch reception. There was a dance floor for the dancers, and lots and lots of outside space for children to run around in. We had just under 100 guests and this was a perfect space for that number. I don't think they can accomodate much more than that, but they handled 100 easily. The Liriodendron is beautiful inside and out. The staff is warm and quite pleasant to deal with. Once I booked them, everything fell into place. I keep hearing from my guests how perfect and lovely and beautiful everything was, and I totally agree. The Liriodendron was just wonderful!

The Lirio is a beautiful site for an outdoor wedding and has covered porches as a rain plan that is comfy for around 100-125 guests. Because it is a historic property, it has quite...

Our reception venue was intimate and romantic easily accommodating our small wedding without feeling like we were overwhelmed by the space. It was picturesque had places for our...
guests to wander room to move as the evening progressed. It is a location that really impressed our guests.;I don't believe the four hour block of time is enough - I added additional time and booked a Friday so I would have my pick of hours. There is a dining room table that cannot be moved - fortunately the weather allowed us to eat outside because I wasn't keen on it! I wondered how clean everything was especially after winter visits -- but I noticed that on my day the mansion seemed to be gleaming and the lawn manicured.
