I recently had a May 2022 wedding at the Royal Sonesta and was extremely disappointed. When we booked our wedding, we met with a wonderfully helpful venue coordinator. However, by ...
the time of our wedding, a new coordinator, Amanda, had started working at the venue. She was extremely disorganized and had to be reminded of things several times. Prior to our wedding, we had paid extra to have an upgraded bar services with additional specific liquor added. On the day of the wedding, none of the upgraded bar was provided. After bringing this to Amanda's attention, only some was fixed before the guests arrived. The venue set-up was also disappointing. There were multiple guest tables that had the incorrect amount of chairs, linens were terribly wrinkled, and the table-side wine service was very spotty. The appetizers served during the cocktail hour were not the ones that we selected prior to the wedding, and to top it off, the leftover wedding cake was discarded and not saved. There were multiple times on the wedding day that I had to get involved to solve problems, which made for a stressful day. Given the amount of money that was paid, we expected much better service and communication. The venue itself is pretty, but I would never choose them again due to the terrible service and added stress on our wedding day.
Don't do it save yourself the stress! We booked the Royal Sonesta for our big day! We met with Jennifer for our tour and fell in love with venue and staff. However, we were inform...
ed that Jennifer would not be our wedding coordinator long term when we booked. Months go by and we had not heard anything which is typical but we had not heard from our new coordinator and I do not think she would have to introduce herself. When we reached out to follow up we had no idea who we were working with at that point. Then we met Amanda... We tried several times to give Amanda the benefit of the doubt and that she had other weddings to focus on but we were extremely displeased with her. I will give her credit and she was responsive closer to the big day. The weekend of our wedding she was a complete nightmare and utterly useless. I am not sure why she felt is was appropriate to email and call me the bride the day of getting ready but that was her choice of communication after she was asked to check in with me in the bridal suite. Nothing was set up so myself and bridesmaids took over and set up furniture and decor that was dropped off a week ahead. The linens were not pressed all wrinkled and floors were dirty. Talk about stressing a bride out. And our coordinator was no where to be found. I think it is extremely unprofessional to arrive after 11:00 with nothing set up and a bad attitude to match. Rude comments were made calling the groom the incorrect name, saying oh I'm confusing you with another wedding, and Amanda asking who was the bride. We had been communicating with her for some time and it felt like she did not care at all. In addition to being zero help she did not follow any of our requests. We wanted things set up a certain way and she went rogue and just did not care. We asked that all the cake was cut and placed on a table out side the ballroom with other desserts so guests could enjoy all the flavors and they saved the top tier and platted everyone's cake disregarding our directives. On top of all that they never served my husband and I cake or clean up our meals so there was dirty plates on the sweetheart table. Amanda argued with our officiant about a podium which was never requested. She was zero help the day of our wedding. You would think for the amount of money we spent she would have said goodbye day of our wedding but she up and left without checking in with us. On top of all of that the Sonesta and Amanda never followed up with us or thanked us for our business. They truly do not care about you and it was evident every step of the way. I would not recommend using the Sonesta for your wedding because you will have to work with Amanda who blatantly does not care about her work or customers. The most special day was spoiled at times due to her lack of professionalism and disregard for us. I have been in several weddings and observed wedding coordinators she hands down wins worst one yet.
* THE WAIT STAFF WAS PHENOMENAL KEVIN AND SAGY DESERVE 10 stars and a raise! They were the only enjoyable part to the sonesta staff. They were very kind and really care about their jobs which was greatly appreciated.
We absolutely loved the Royal Sonesta. Jay is the best to work with -- we immediately were confident in his skills and experience from our first meeting with him. Every single hote...
l staff person we encountered through planning and throughout the entire wedding weekend was incredibly friendly and accommodating to anything we or our guests needed. Certain parts of the hotel (ie. bathrooms in rooms) are dated, however everything that really matters that you see (hotel lobby, other parts of the rooms, ballrooms, etc.) are beautiful. The view of the inner harbor is great from the ballroom, even better from the guest rooms on higher floors, and our guests enjoyed the time there. Jay will offer as much or as little advice as you want, and we were very pleased with all of his recommendations.
Of all of the moving parts of our wedding, the Sonesta was the vendor I was most excited about and most disappointed by. I'm not saying they did a bad job - but I also wouldn't say...
it was good, just somewhere in the middle.
PROS:
+Jay Day, the Director of Catering, is an incredibly knowledgeable, talented asset. He has done this a million times, knows all the important questions to ask, and is very very responsive. As two people who had never planned a large event before, this was invaluable to us. He spent a lot of time with us planning the event and clearly cares deeply about his clients.
+The space is absolutely breathtaking. The layout of the ballrooms with their large windows and stunning harbor views, and eclectic, classy Baltimore style. The rooms are spacious and beautiful. The rooftop is stunning and the pool/sports area is very well maintained. It is a truly beautiful, unique space.
+The price, as compared to the many many other venues we looked at, was reasonable for what it includes. Not having to pay any extra for linens, set up/break down, reserving the ballroom, ect, is very convenient. I'm not saying it's cheap, but the price is reasonable for what you are getting.
+The hotel staff (note: not banquet staff) but the front desk, valet, concierge, ect, are all lovely people and consummate professionals. We visited the hotel many times in the course of planning and were blown away by their quality of service and friendliness.
CONS:
+For some reason, the hotel had a very difficult time making reservations under our Block. We had about 10 guests who tried to make hotel reservations only to be told that our block was full or didn't exist. So then, I had to call my hotel representative to book a room for those guests and it was very annoying. The problem was never fixed despite multiple complaints on my part and none of the hotel staff I talked to could seem to figure out why it was happening.
+The food at the cocktail hour and reception was a big con. The appetizers were dry, cold, and I heard many guests complaining that they never got any because not enough were being passed around. The food at the reception came out very slowly and very late. Some guests had long finished their dinners before other tables had even been served. We heard guests complaining about their food being dry/cold; some guests even sent their food back! How embarrassing. We had a very simple menu so I'm not sure why they had so much trouble getting it out hot. Our appetizer was a soup with a meatball in it. When it came out, servers just dropped a bowl with a single dry meatball on the table in front of them and left with no explanation. 5 minutes later they came out to add soup to the dish, but by then many confused guests had eaten their single sad meatball already because they didn't understand. We had many vegetarian guests and were assured by the hotel that alternate food would be available to them. However, day-of, the vegetarians were told by banquet staff that there were no options for them until I personally had to complain because my vegan cousin didn't know what to do.
+The hotel restaurant was very slow. It took us over an hour to get our food the day after the wedding.
All in all, we were okay with our experience with the Sonesta but there was a lot left to be desired. We had high expectations of them based on our many planning meetings and felt that the banquet services did not live up to what we had been told.
We used Royal Sonesta for the hotel block and the brunch. Overall, it was a great experience, and we'd definitely do it again. The hotel was convenient, booking and brunch managers...
were very nice to work with, and we had over 50 rooms booked and 150ish people for brunch that was great! The brunch was set up perfectly, food and room were phenomenal, and the hotel itself was very clean.
We did have a few problems.
The first was that one couple arrived late on Friday, and their room had been given away. Royal Sonesta did book them another hotel 8 miles away, but did not offer any transportation assistance to get there. These relatives drove from South Carolina for our wedding, and arrived after midnight, only to be turned away that evening - very, very embarrassing. The staff was kind enough to give them a presidential suite the following night, so all worked out okay, but it was terrible news to wake up to on my wedding morning.
Secondly, we had tried to put in our room service order for the bridesmaids/groomsmen/bride/groom for Saturday for breakfast and lunch. We tried to do so ahead of time, but were told we could not do so until the day before, since that's when we'd be present. They were large orders (12 people for breakfast, 25 people for lunch). Breakfast was an hour late, with no estimate, and lunch was 15 minutes late. We were scolded by a staff for not notifying in advance... but that's what we tried to do.
For the record, two other less serious but similar problems:
-The maid of honor's room wasn't ready until after 4pm on Friday, which made her very late for the 4pm rehearsal.
-The bride and groom ordered dinner (just them - 2 people) on Sunday, and it was almost 2 hours late, though the staff was kind enough to give us that meal for free.
We were amazed by how well the staff at the Royal Sonesta took care of us and other guests in our wedding party. We met in Baltimore but moved away before our wedding; the staff tr...
uly made us feel like we were back home again! Our suite was perfect for entertaining guests prior to our big day. Other guests staying in our room block said the rooms made them feel like "royalty." The cafe and restaurant are convenient, and the gym is well-equipped (complete with outdoor tennis and basketball courts, a pool, and a sauna). And it's really tough to beat such a convenient location right on the Inner Harbor; it's also really easy access from the highway or downtown train stations. We hope to be back for our first anniversary!

ible, he will answer your questions, guide you to making good decisions and will actually care about making your day a success. Jay and his entire staff were kind, professional and really made my day go smoothly. Jay will work with you if there is something you want to add, delete or change - he is fair and you never feel like you're being taken advantage of. The hotel rooms are stunning, the ballrooms are incredible, the entire hotel is so clean and impressive! The one thing that I really fell in love with, their ballroom actually has windows that show the harbor! we loved that our guests could have that view while eating their meals. Do yourself a favor and check out this venue!!

ng chart. He didn't let us forget a single detail! Everything just came out so wonderful! I can't thank him enough. In addition to the absolute beauty of the venue, the food was delicious! Every single one of our guests has given us positive feedback on some aspect of the meal. The wait staff was also amazing. I cannot say enough great things about our wedding. It was the most wonderful day and Jay and his team are to thank for that.

ks for our wedding at the Visionary Art Museum. Our families were all so happy with their rooms and with the staff, especially the relatives who required special accommodations. They gave us a beautiful bride and groom suite, and delivered strawberries and champagne to us on the night of our wedding.

We could not have imagined a better experience! Our wedding day was perfect, and the preparations leading up to it were so easy, thanks to Jay.
We had a small wedding (approx 35 p...
eople), and we wanted an appropriate-sized venue that was close to the water. Jay patiently showed us around the property and answered many follow-up questions, while we looked for venues. At the end of the day, there was really no comparison. The Royal Sonesta offered the best location at a reasonable price.
Jay was extremely flexible and patient - even when we were indecisive or had no idea what we were doing. He was extremely responsive and pleasant throughout the whole process and very open to our ideas and preferences.
On the day of, things went exceptionally smoothly, and we were able to relax and enjoy our day without any worry. The the wait staff was very helpful, accommodating and courteous. All of the food was phenomenal!
Finally, the hotel itself is beautiful. We loved having the option of having our ceremony and cocktail hour on the rooftop garden. Our reception was in the Brightons Room - which was perfect for our smaller wedding. The bridal suite has a fantastic view of the Inner Harbor. We were very sad to check out.
All in all, we could not have chosen a better venue. Our guests raved about how beautiful the venue was! We will recommend the Royal Sonesta Baltimore and hope to return for other events!
While it may be true that there are MANY hotels in Baltimore, there's really just one that you should use: Royal Sonesta Harbor Court. Here's why:
1. Mr. Jay Day, the hotel's Dire...
ctor of Catering. For us, he was a tremendous resource, a calming influence, and was a good friend throughout the process. He never let us over-think a particular aspect, and was never afraid to tell us exactly what he thought. His honesty was refreshing; as we met with multiple hotels at the start of the planning process, it seemed that many of them told us what they thought we wanted to hear, so we heard the same thing over and over. Jay was up front and honest about everything, and was incredibly flexible with so many of the small details. Our wedding would not have been half of what it was without him.
2. The hotel will only book one wedding per weekend, so you and your guests will never have to worry about a double-booked reception space, caterers, etc. The hotel has 3 different ballrooms, and we were able to utilize all of them for our event, which gave every aspect its own unique feel.
3. The food was INCREDIBLE. I don't know how to start, so I'll have to leave it at that.
4. All of the ballrooms have windows that look onto the Harbor. Go to any other hotel in Baltimore, and if you can find a ballroom with windows, they won't be looking at the Harbor. Nothing is prettier than looking out onto the Harbor at night, and to have that visual as a backdrop for your wedding is amazing.
5. Every one of the hotel's staff are consummate professionals who will go completely out of their way for not only you, but for every one of your guests. We arrived at the hotel with an SUV packed to the brim, and the bell staff had everything out of the car and in our room in 10 minutes. The front desk answered every question we could think to throw at them, and the housekeeping staff were incredibly flexible, as we utilized our suite for the bridal party on the day of the wedding.
Our daughter was married here on 11/12/16. The ceremony, cocktail hour and reception were all held in the hotel. Every aspect of the wedding was everything we expected. All our ...
guests raved about the location (beautiful, convenient) and the food (it's deliciousness).
As far as planning, Jay Day is going to be the best you find around Baltimore. His knowledge is incredible and he will remind you of everything you did not think about. Jay always kept us informed and even more importantly he kept all our vendors (Photographer, florist, band) informed.
Highly recommend you consider this location, I even more highly recommend you meet with Jay and discuss your wants, he will be clear and honest about can and shouldn't be done

ding, but I had never framed and enclosed it in to where it would take place, until my event planner Tiffanie McCoy, Bird of Paradise Events, and Jay made that dream come true. From the ceremony to the cocktail hour to the reception, everything was flawless. It was a day that I want to put on repeat! Don't hesitate to have your dream wedding here!
The Royal Sonesta and Jay were absolutely amazing! We could not have chosen a better location, venue, or team to work with and to host our wedding. The whole day from the suite to ...
the ceremony and cocktail hour on the rooftop terrace to the food and drink and décor during the reception, it was all true perfection. Jay was insanely responsive throughout the entire year and a half of my constant questions, provided guidance and support, and personally made sure the entire day and night went seamlessly. (Even rushing into action to help me out with a spill on my gown!) The entire hotel staff were also fantastic, friendly, helpful, and professional. If I could get married all over again I would do it at the Sonesta and with Jay by my side in a heart beat!

tanding. The ballroom is extremely neutral now and the rooms are modern. We had a lot of out-of-town guests and the location was perfect for them to experience the sights of Baltimore. When it came to planning the wedding, Jay Day was the best. He made the entire process very seamless and stress-free. The hotel staff, especially the banquet and serving staff, was also excellent. I cannot say enough about the food during the event and the chefs either. Everyone working there was professional and helped made our wedding day amazing. Thank you Royal Sonesta and especially Jay!

very easy to work with. best price in town! walking distance to harbor.

et a wedding coordinator and even with some changing in the staff during the year of planning our wedding, the coordinator made sure everything on the day of our wedding went perfectly! And the couple gets their wedding night for free! So the venue, food, and wedding night hotel are all taken care of in one. The food was delicious and they work with you to help fit customize to fit into your budget and to make your wedding personal.
Now it's officially the Royal Sonesta Harbor Court. Exceptional Service, elegant ambiance, a really nice venue for a wedding of 100-150 people.
Excellent venue- beautiful location, very helpful staff. We had the ceremony and reception here and both were perfect.
