About this vendor
The Skinner Barn is a beautifully restored historical barn near the Northfield Ridge in Waitsfield, VT. This breathtaking wedding venue was originally a dairy barn built in 1891 by the Skinner family and sits upon 15 acres of beautiful landscapes. Boasting a quintessential Vermont setting, this site offers an incredible location to exchange vows and celebrate love with friends and family.
Owner and operator Peter Boynton purchased this property in 1988 when it was in disrepair and need of love. After eight years of renovations, the vision of a social and cultural event space became a reality. Now catering to educational classes, parties, weddings, and special occasions, The Skinner Barn offers a romantic, joyous, and welcoming atmosphere to everyone who walks through the doors. The vendor team comprises talented professionals dedicated to making each event magical and memorable. They take pride in establishing relationships with couples during the planning process, working together to use creativity and experience to bring dream celebrations to life.
The Skinner Barn comprises three stories, nestled into a hillside. The lower level houses the on-site bar, restrooms, and two get-ready rooms where nearlyweds and their wedding parties can prepare for the big day. These private areas have back doors ideal for organizing a first look between couples. The grounds offer three ceremony meadows, each providing a different atmosphere and tone. The Back Meadow is accessed over a romantic bridge crossing the Clay Brook, with views of the western ridgeline and a beautiful pond. The Lower Meadow has access to the barn's shelter and is ideal for receptions on days when the weather threatens celebrations. The High Meadow is perfect for the more adventurous festivities, with a modest hike to the southeast corner of the field and a remarkable view of Camel’s Hump at the peak. Each location offers truly fantastic photo opportunities. The Skinner Barn also provides a list of recommended vendors from the area to assist nearlyweds in their planning process.

We can't say enough how thankful we are that we found the Skinner Barn, owned by Peter, for our wedding! The scenery is absolutely stunning, and the inside of the barn is gorgeous. Peter was so helpful and setup and broke down everything needed for our wedding. He also made it clear that what was most important was we were relaxed and had fun on our wedding day, and that he would tend to any issues/concerns that popped up. Our day was absolutely perfect and we are so happy we chose the Skinner Barn as our wedding venue!
We cannot speak highly enough of Peter. He is so friendly, super responsive, and wants your day to go as smoothly as possible. His barn is simply gorgeous, with views overlooking Sugar Bush, Mt. Ellen, and Mad River Glen.
He really worked with us to make sure things fit our budget and went the way we wanted them to. For example, he let us play our own music on his sound system and let us use his extra fridge for desserts that we brought in ourselves. We also had concerns about a grandparent who has trouble getting around - he has a golf cart that he uses to drive folks with mobility impairments around the property. He also has a beautiful arbor that you can rent if you don’t want to bring one in yourselves.
Overall, it was such a beautiful day and I can’t thank Peter enough.

Peter is so awesome. From our first interaction when my wife and I were deciding on our venue for our wedding, through to the day itself, Peter was easy to work with and so accommodating. The Skinner Barn itself was the perfect location for our wedding and the magical backdrop we both envisioned for our special day. I'd recommend the Skinner Barn and Peter to anyone looking for a barn wedding in the New England area! Ian
The moment we stepped foot on the property of The Skinner Barn we knew it felt like the right place for us to be married. Peter, the owner, gave us a detailed tour of the space and quickly demonstrated his tremendous knowledge of the wedding industry and event production. In comparison to other venues we toured, Peter's property, experience, and value far exceeded the competition. The barn is beautifully renovated and was the perfect size for our smaller wedding (70 guests and it didn't look empty - can fit 125). We had our ceremony on site overlooking Sugarbush and the Green Mountains, a cocktail hour outside next to the barn, and reception inside. It was the perfect mix so that guests did not feel bored but didn't have to travel. Other pluses include space for catering on site, REAL bathrooms, and getting ready spaces for both partners. Peter was so helpful and supportive throughout our planning process and helped us orchestrate the rehearsal and day perfectly. We couldn't have been happier with the experience.
The Skinner Barn was the perfect location for our destination wedding! The ceremony was in a field with a mountain backdrop and it was a stunning autumn day. The reception was held in the barn itself and could not have been more lovely. The venue owner, Peter, had a list of pre-selected vendors for catering, beverage, and rentals, which was fantastic, since we were overwhelmed by all of the possible decisions and options from other vendors. Peter was also highly responsive, engaged, and particular during the planning processing and on the day-of. If you're looking for an autumn barn wedding in Vermont, the Skinner Barn can't be beat!
The Skinner Barn was the perfect venue for our wedding in early October 2017. The barn is large with modern accommodations. The views of the mountains from the wide-open valley are simply majestic. And the owner, Peter, is super-helpful, especially the day-of. Plus, working with an exclusive list of vendors (catering, rentals, and bar service) makes having a wedding here super easy since everyone knows exactly what to do and when -- no confusion! We'd highly recommend to have your wedding at the Skinner Barn.
We couldn't have dreamt of a more beautiful and fun wedding in Vermont! The Skinner Barn is in a breathtaking and quiet setting that helped create the backdrop for our wedding day. We were able to have our ceremony outside in the field while our guests could see the mountains in the background. The caterer, beverage services, and rentals company are already pre-decided by Peter, the barn owner, and I can see why he chose them. The three companies were fantastic to work with and made the day go smoothly. Peter was extremely accommodating and an all-around great person. He met with us twice before our wedding, which we really appreciated. He was also a hit with our guests- everyone loved him. I've heard from our guests that the Skinner Barn was a perfect setting and everyone had such a fun time!
It's been less than 3 weeks since our wedding at the Skinner Barn. It was incredible! The barn and property is absolutely stunning and was exactly what we were looking for in a venue. We are local to VT and were searching for a beautiful barn to house our outdoor ceremony, and cocktail hour and indoor festivities/reception. This had it all and we had incredible support from the whole team that we worked with,
The owner's efforts, attention to detail and communication were respectful, joyful, and prompt. We worked with Peter from our tour through the wedding, as he answered questions and provided expertise as we looked to him for how things have worked in the past at the barn. His interest in celebrating love and hosting weddings is so genuine. They have exclusive contracts with their vendors, who all were superb. They have chosen the cream of the crop and that made our experience all the more delightful and smooth as they had established relationships many weddings ago.
A+++
Beautiful venue in an even more beautiful town in Vermont.
The only thing that would have made it better is if they didn't have exclusive vendors. The beverage service Peter uses, Hyde Away Inn, was horrible to work with. Ana was very unpleasant the whole time and extremely unresponsive to email communications. So unresponsive that she hadn't even sent me my finalized contract to sign until days before the wedding.
Catering by Dale, his exclusive catering service, was the complete opposite and wonderful to work with.
The spot is rustic, Very "Vermont" and the most beautiful surroundings. But, the owner is obsessive about who you have for vendors, make sure you are out by 10pm, and he was much too present at the reception. (did not even dress up!) He made negative comments to my guest, even my family about the reception/vendors. I would recommend a wedding in a barn any day, but not this one! If you want someone who will be on your side to help with your day, go elsewhere!
The Skinner Barn was the perfect venue for our wedding. Our ceremony was held outdoors in a meadow behind the barn - with mountain views as the back drop. We moved to the front lawn for cocktails and then inside the barn for the reception. Our friends and relatives were blown away by the beauty of the setting. The historic barn has a simple elegance and is the perfect place for a celebration.
