The Wedding Dance Experts at Heart & Sole Dance

lessons about 3 months before the wedding, which gave us enough time to practice. Neither one of us dance, which is why we actually had bowling, bocce, and a firepit at our wedding. We knew we would need lessons, though, so the 5 lesson package helped us to have a smooth, polished dance. You can get larger packages, too, if you want something more choreographed or if you plan on using some lessons for the other dances like the father/daughter and mother/son ones. Make sure you give yourself more time for those unless you are already a wonderful dancer. Suzie was our dance instructor, and she was hilarious and helped us to relax. She broke the moves down into smaller steps for us and worked with us individually and as a couple. She gave the option of either having specific choreography that matched parts of the song or having a more flexible style with three moves that we used throughout the dance when we wanted. I’m bad at following cues in music, so we chose the flexible style. The instruction included an entrance and a big ending, too. Both of us are overweight, so we sometimes have back and knee pain. When a move felt uncomfortable, I let Suzie know, and she was able to modify it for us to complete the move more easily. She also encouraged us to ask questions if we needed clarification, and she told us to videotape her instructions so that we had a reference when we practiced at home. The rest of the staff was great as well. We had to share the floor with other couples, classes, etc., and most of the time we had to bring our kids. I was worried they would annoy other people, but the staff was very understanding about their presence. The kids liked going there, and sometimes they even imitated us by dancing in the background. As for the dance itself, most people were surprised. We don’t have a video of it to share because we didn’t hire a videographer, and the relative who was supposed to do it on her phone forgot. I did see snippets from other people, though, and most people were surprised and impressed because they know we don’t dance. We started doing a sway, which most people expected, but when we did our first box and turn, the reception hall erupted into cheers. One of my friends even posted “First dance… nailed it!” on my facebook wall immediately after we finished. Our only suggestion for improvement would be to give the edited song to the couple sooner. We got ours on our final lesson, which was about 2-3 weeks before the wedding. With two kids at home, both of us working, and taking care of my sick father on top of the wedding, we really didn’t have much time to practice. However, I think most couples probably would have more time to practice at home, and it would be helpful for future couples to have it on hand earlier.
