We spent a significant amount of time researching makeup artists and interviewed several before ultimately choosing True Vermont Beauty. We intentionally decided to invest more tha...n we originally planned in order to mitigate risk and give everyone in our wedding party the best possible chance of feeling confident and happy on the day.
During our planning discussions, the owner was very organized and pricing was upfront. Over the discussions, it was agreed that we would add an assistant, as we were told this would help keep everything on schedule and even allow us a bit of extra time in the morning (we had an early wedding due to it being prime winter and would have otherwise had to start hair and make up at 5:30AM). Unfortunately, this did not end up helping our timeline.
Of the two brides, one was happy with her makeup, but the other was not. Several members of the wedding party ended up touching up or redoing their makeup themselves, and one person specifically noted that they did not receive the look they had requested. This was disappointing given the level of investment and the expectations that had been set.
There also seemed to be a lack of clarity in roles and responsibilities among the team. One artist was fully focused on makeup, while the other—who was presented as being dedicated to hair and noted for award-winning updos—was instead splitting time between hair, prepping faces, and prepping eyes. In several cases, that prep work needed to be redone by the primary makeup artist, which created inefficiencies.
The assistant’s role was also not what we had been led to expect. Rather than consistently supporting with prep (such as preparing faces), they were shuffled between tasks and at times appeared to be observing. When we asked about this, we were told they were being trained (having paid for an assistant's full time - my wedding was not the time to be training assistants). Additionally, the hair artist frequently needed to check in with the primary makeup artist (the owner) for guidance on various things, which did not inspire the level of confidence we expected given that we were paying premium pricing for professional services.
Timing was another challenge. Despite having an assistant, hair and makeup ran behind schedule. There were multiple points where chairs were empty, which we raised to the artists, but we were reassured that everything was on track.
Because the morning became rushed, I had to leave quickly to try to stay on schedule. Makeup should have been completed an hour before the wedding, instead we had people running to the shuttle at the time that the ceremony was supposed to start. I ended up having to handle payment in the moment without the opportunity to fully process or address the concerns of the group. Otherwise, I would have appreciated the chance to provide feedback in real time and potentially revisit pricing given the experience.
Overall, while there were some positives, the experience did not fully align with the expectations set during the booking process, especially considering the premium price point.
