Congratulations and thank you for your interest in Utopia River Retreat for your special day. Set on 12 acres along the Sabinal River in Utopia, Texas (about and hour and a half northwest of San Antonio), this special venue is one of the most stunning properties in the Texas Hill Country. Whether it be along the banks of the cypress tree lined Sabinal River, on one of our lawns under magnificent centuries-old live oak trees or in the fully enclosed elegant rustic barn with an attached deck and gazebo, the property offers numerous opportunities to host your ceremony and reception.
Set in the heart of the Sabinal and Frio River Canyons, opportunities for daily activities are endless. Lost Maples State Park, Garner State Park and the Frio River are all within 20 minutes of our gate. The town of Utopia is a mere stone’s throw and has a number of fun shops and restaurants. The lost Maples Winery and an 18-hole golf course are also close by. You can easily lose yourself in quiet solitude & tranquility as you become immersed in the area.
Accommodations:
Oral History indicates that the land Utopia River Retreat now occupies was originally settled in the 1860’s, then known as the Bownds Fort Site. Serving as the centerpiece of our accommodations and event space, the now fully renovated Fortress was originally a stone barn. This was constructed as a Fort with gun-ports as a defense against Native American incursions into the valley. Today the Fortress has two master suites and 3 semi-private loft areas making it perfect for larger groups or families.
The Fortress is flanked by nine additional one and two-bedroom cabins sleeping up to 4 to 6 people each and offering splendid views of the surrouding river valley, making this a truly all-inclusive event space for your momentous weekend. In addition to our on-site accommodations we also have additional managed properties in the area available for your guests.
Other on-site amenities include: Private access to the river throughout the property, Free Wi-Fi throughout the property, Gated pool area with adjoining covered gazebo

My husband and I decided to have our welcome dinner and wedding at URR just last weekend and the venue did not dissappoint. We stayed Wednesday-Monday, with our close friends and families staying Thurs-Sun.
The cabins were clean, well stocked,...
and pet friendly so our 3 dogs were able to be a part of our special day. The cabins were cool and the beds were very comfortable.
Nancy, our contact at the venue, was an absolute pleasure to work with. She was communicative, thorough, and as involved as we wanted her to be. She treated all of us with kindness and respect, and truthfully we feel like shes a part of our family now!
The ceremony and reception were everything we could have imagined and more. The barn was perfect, the river was actually pretty high, and the trees made for an etherial forresty vibe!
We had the best weekend of our lives at URR and would do it here again in a heartbeat!

atching other family enjoy the pool area. We climbed trees and even spotted wildlife! The hostess made sure the wedding team had what they needed and coordinated everything so well. We used the barn area both nights and was the perfect size for getting to know our new family. The smaller cabins on site looked so cozy if you're looking for a extended stay. I tip my hat to Utopia River Retreat. 10 out of 10 will recommend you stay and enjoy the Hill Country here!
Keep in mind, the retreat does not control the water level or weather.

During a recent trip to Garner State Park for a family event with my son and his family, we booked the Lookout cabin at the Utopia River Retreat. Not being from this area, I depended on the Wi-Fi that was provided by the retreat. The Wi-Fi was ...
botchy and unable to be used during our stay. Without AT&T cellular service, you could not make or receive phone calls unless connected to the Wi-Fi. The cabin had one window A/C unit that did not cool the entire cabin, and the bathroom door had to remain closed. There were two stand up fans provided; however, one did not work. We were unable to use the swimming pool as the gate remained locked. The cabin had a mildew smell and under the kitchen sink cabinet the floor was rotted out. It is obvious the owners are aware of this issue as there was a charcoal odor absorber bag hanging under the kitchen sink. The area behind the cabin where the Sabinal River flows through was dried up, which is a mother nature issue, but the view was not beautiful. The beds were not comfortable, no matter what side you slept on, you would roll to the center of the bed. Due to not having cellular reception, and the Wi-Fi not working properly, we were unable to contact the after-hours emergency number for any of these issues we experienced. This could be a really nice place if the owners put a little money into the cabin we stayed at. Overall, this was not a comfortable or relaxing stay.

he manager insisted it was cooling fine. Dining Chairs in cabin almost had my mom on the floor, legs were bent. Grass was up to our knees in places, looked so unkept and Sad. Porches are rotten. Under cabin lookout kitchen sink it was rotten out and molded . I am so happy our 2 days was refunded so we could go get a hotel room in Uvalde. But I really wanted to be in a place that I was so looking forward to. My grandkids were very upset with the experience and so was the rest of the family. I will not be back!
