My husband and I were over the moon at how beautiful our wedding at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art was. From our first tour to our actual ceremony and reception, we couldn...
’t have been happier with our partnership with Tess who was always there to offer ideas and answer any questions we might have. It truly felt as though both us as a couple and our ideas were truly cared for whenever we had any interaction with Tess. MOCA was not only within our budget, but also featured many amenities other places we toured did not. We were so pleased that our guests were even able to have access to the gallery and see the wonderful local art. From our ceremony in the Rodriguez Pavilion with the beautiful Chihuly sculpture, to our reception in the Atrium with the gorgeous uplighting, lit trees, and reflective floor, our wedding was everything we dreamed it would be, and we are so grateful to have had an opportunity to have it at MOCA and to work with Tess.
When my husband and I were looking for a wedding venue, we wanted something unique. The VA MOCA met all the expectations for a one of a kind wedding venue that we could have wished...
for. The marvelous ficus lighted trees, the awe inspiring Dale Chihuly chandelier, and the rotating art exhibition make for a wedding venue that stands out from the rest. Kay Barbini was the most warm, welcoming and accommodating event manager that we met with (and we looked a LOT of venues). Even when met with rain challenges late the day of, Kay and the MOCA seamlessly adapted to our new plans for the wedding and delivered a beautiful space that marveled our guests from beginning to end. The MOCA has everything we needed in a wedding venue and we cannot recommend it more!
I had the wedding of my dreams here just a few weeks ago. It was absolutely magical. Kay, the event manager, there is the sweetest and SO easy to work with! She will get you the...
answer to any venue related question quickly and was happy to have us visit as many times as we wanted (which we definitely took advantage of!) The high ceilings, lighting and trees transformed the Atrium into the fairytale venue I wanted. Plus the outside area is a huge plus! I picked this venue because it was beautiful without any changes, but really because it was the perfect blank slate for my vision and personalization.
HIGHLY recommend. Also just to correct the details part-- there are dressing rooms available there. They're not huge and we didn't get ready there, but we did final touches and everything back there!
There are a few things wrong on this site--it IS handicapped accessible and there IS dressing rooms! They even have a large private bathroom which was perfect for me to have all my...
bridesmaids help me with my dress and no audience worrying about that.
We just had our wedding at the MoCA and it was absolutely WONDERFUL. They were super responsive throughout the planning, even let us set up all the tables and everything the day before. We had the ceremony in the gorgeous Rodriguez Pavilion, married under a beautiful Chihuly chandelier, and then we had the reception in the atrium. It is such a gorgeous room we didn't have to worry much about decorations. Everything--tables, nice white chairs--even a piano, which we used during the ceremony--is included in the price. There are risers if you need them, a microphone and speakers, even a pretty little arch if you want to use it. Everything was so smooth, it was so easy, so much more affordable than it looked, I cannot recommend this venue enough!!
We do not recommend MOCA. Several issues we brought up in advance were not taken care of, and more issues arose the night of our wedding. We were members of the museum and frequent...
ed it often, but each time we’d go, the bathrooms would be dirty, and would have little to no soap/paper towels. We brought this up to the event manager and she said she had noticed the same, and would ensure those would not be problems during our wedding. On the big day, bathrooms were dirty, we ran out of paper towels after 1.5 hours, and there was no soap. Let me reiterate. No soap. All of our guests, and our catering staff, were left rinsing hands in just water and then drying them on their clothes or shaking them to air dry. Hard to believe a venue that regularly hosts events and weddings would not supply soap and paper towels, which are very basic necessities. There are also sinks/toilets in the getting ready rooms, but no paper towels or soap were supplied in those rooms. In the women’s getting ready room, the toilet began to leak. After just 3 uses from the bridal party, the room was flooding, and with no onsite manager present, we were cleaning it ourselves. It is hard to believe no one knew about the toilet in advance considering how much it leaked. Now for the grossest part: throughout the evening, there were several HUGE cockroaches running around. One ran into the getting ready room area and the rest were all out where we were eating, dancing, and trying to enjoy ourselves. Some were stomped on, others were chased back into the trees (the venue has lovely trees inside…which apparently house bugs). The most frustrating and disheartening part of this is that we brought up all of these issues to the event manager after the fact, and she never responded. Not even to offer a simple, “I’m sorry.” So again, we do not recommend this venue. There are other gorgeous options to choose from in the Virginia Beach area that will care more about their client’s experience/well-being.
The Museum, also known as MOCA, was the venue that made all of my dreams come true. Kay took over the weddings at MOCA after we had signed our contract, and she was only a phone ca...
ll away the entire time. If you haven't seen this place, get there - put it on your list to see - I highly recommend going and seeing a wedding set up. They can do so much with that great space. I had my entire wedding there (ceremony, cocktail hour, a Museum tour, and the reception). We were able to book vendors we wanted, bring in the alcohol we wanted, and use the chairs and tables at the venue. Did I mention that you are given a annual pass when you book with them. This venue has it all, don't settle for less, and your out of town guest will love it's location right off the highway, and the beauty of the Museum. Plus, getting to work with Kay is such a treat!
This was t perfect location for our wedding. It was elegant and classy. It is such a lovely place you really don't need that many extra decorations. The size is great for 100+ gue...
sts. It also photographs very well.
We are so happy with our experience with the Museum of contemporary art! Not only was everything smooth and easy going from the start, Irene was easy to work with and accommodated ...
our personal needs. I gave four stars for value (it was kind of pricey) but you do get a lot provided for you to save on rentals ( tables, chairs, etc.)... service was also good but they were tricky to work with on getting a caterer that we liked and being able to bring our own crew in. All in all, MOCA provided a gorgeous setting for our ceremony, photos, reception and wedding day in general. If you love a gorgeous venue that lets you bring all of your vendors a la carte' this place would be great to check out!
Absolutely beautiful location. The Rodriguez room is great for a cocktail hour and the Atrium at night was beautiful. Wonderful venue!
This venue is naturally gorgeous and was the perfect place to dance our first night away as husband and wife. I don't think the dance floor ever cleared. All of our family and fr...
iends raved about it!
Our wedding reception was held at the Contemporary Arts Center of Virginia. I fell in love with this location instantly. We had our cocktail hour in the Rodriguez Room. The room...
has floor to ceiling windows (plenty of natural light) with a gorgeous view of outside. After the cocktail hour, our guests was moved to the Atrium for dinner and dancing. The Atrium has plenty of windows and live, lit trees surrounding the "dance floor." Due to the lit trees, the Atrium looks even better at night. Irene, the onsite wedding coordinator, was extremely helpful and accomodating. The security staff was helpful as well. This venue is well worth the money!
The art center is by far one of the best in the hampton roads and we looked at pretty much all of them! In the Atrium, huge 80 foot ceilings with wall to wall windows and real indo...
or trees with lights make the venue very unique. The room has a pre-sectioned dance floor and a contemporary black/white/neutral feel. Perfect for a reception. The Rodriguez Pavilion we used as the ceremony room- small and intimate with huge glass sculpture hanging from the ceiling, black and white neutral decor, and huge floor to ceiling window with greenery behind it made it beautiful for our ceremony.
Some things to know though- this is very expensive for a Saturday wedding, or even a Sunday one. It was a big part of our budget. However, we did minimal decorations and it still looked fantastic. Also, we had a black/white/silver wedding and unlike a lot of colorful venues with colored walls and carpet and chairs, this worked well for our color scheme.
Another thing to consider is the size of your wedding. We had 85 people and it was perfect. You could have up to 150 people and it would still work, but if you have more than that, you should look for a larger venue.
The venue also comes with a brand-new state of the art sound system that was amazing! We mixed our own music and put it on an I-POD and the sound was incredible. It also comes with tables, chairs, ice-maker, piano, bar sections, pedestals for flowers and security. Also, you can choose your own caterer which was one of the big pros for us!
Overall, the venue was remarkable and fit our theme really well, the people in charge were helpful and accommodating. Was beautiful without any decorations and our guests were stunned by the venue. Perfect for us and we are glad we spent the money, but if you are a moderate-low budget bride- this is rather expensive. But check out the website- beautiful!
The art center is amazing. I do not believe that there is a more beautiful place to be married in Virginia Beach. We came from Miami to get married there. Irene the event coordinat...
or could not have made the long distance planning more seamless. I don’t know the other reviewer’s experience but she always returned my calls and was always on top of the payments. She has been there for a very long time and if you have any questions about vendors she is extremely helpful. I felt very blessed to have her to work with. As far as the chairs I did not see one rip in them. We also had the pleasure of working with Clint. He helped us setup and take down at the end of the night. Without Clint we would have been there all night. All we had to do was ask for something and he was on top of it. If you want to get married in an amazing venue with amazing people to help this is it. The money is totally worth it. Irene and Clint helped in allowing me to have my dream wedding.
The Art Center is a very nice place to have a wedding but I found my myself alittle upset with the service. The chairs they provided were limited and they had ants all over them. I...
had to move my guest outside untill the chairs were moved from the ceremony room to my reception. I paid for security that I did not see and the woman in charge of handling all the wedding was extremely hard to reach during the months of my planning.
The CAC is a wonderful place to hold a wedding ceremony and reception. We had our ceremony in the Rodriguez Pavilion. It held about 130 of our guests comfortably (we definitely fit...
, but it was only spacious feeling because of the high ceiling and expanse of windows), had great acoustics, and gave us the outside natural setting we wanted in an air conditioned space. The atrium was beautiful as well and because of the living trees, we were able to stay with a simple, elegant, and somewhat understated amount of decoration for our tablescapes and flowers.
What an amazing location for a wedding! I had both my ceremony and reception at the Art Center in the Atrium. I had originally wanted to get married outside and changed my mind b...
ecause of weather concerns. The art center gave me the chance to have the best of both worlds with the beautiful floor to ceiling windows! I highly recommend this venue to all!!! The staff is extremely easy to work with as well :)

ul! They really allow almost anything (within reason). I couldn't have asked for a better place!
It was in the atrium and just beautiful with all the trees lit up.;The chairs are beaten up and worn.
