The Webb Barn at Webb Deane Stevens Museum is a rustic wedding venue located in Old Wethersfield, CT. A 19th-century barn nestled in the heart of Connecticut’s largest historic district, it’s surrounded by Colonial Revival gardens and flowering trees.
First opened in 1919, the Webb Deane Stevens Museum aims to provide its visitors with the quintessential New England experience. Guests are immersed in mid-18th and early-19th century life as they travel through its four historic houses, fully furnished with period furniture and décor. The 19th-century Webb Barn is located behind the beautiful Colonial Revival gardens and has become a popular venue for all kinds of events. Renovated and expanded to cater to modern needs, it still retains its historic character and charm.
The Webb Barn at Webb Deane Stevens Museum seats 135 for indoor ceremonies and receptions, and features a slate patio where guests can relax. For larger events, a tent can be rented that brings the maximum capacity to 160. The barn is decorated with warm string lights for an intimate, cozy feel, and the space can easily be transformed to suit any wedding theme or style. If desired, couples can also hold their ceremonies outdoors in the picturesque gardens. For an additional fee, a tour of the historic Joseph Webb House can be arranged as part of the event. The barn itself was amazing! It was everything we wanted it to be! We were a little taken aback by the "add-ons" / fees that were necessary to make our day come to fruition that we were not expecting initially. Overall our guests really enjoyed the barn and the grounds and we were very pleased with how everything turned out.
The Webb Barn was perfect- we could not have had a better experience! The venue embodied the exact vision that we had for our wedding. The inside of the barn is rustic and wonderful, with white lights adding the perfect romantic touch. The grounds are gorgeous- we got married in front of the arch that leads to the flower gardens which are so well maintained, they were perfect! Katie was wonderful to deal with - so kind and helpful! And Howard was great on the day of the wedding! Highly recommend!!
The Webb Barn was the perfect venue for us because we were looking for a place to have the wedding where we could choose our own caterers and bar. Very beautiful and rustic with lovely grounds and gardens. Katie, who is the contact person, was great, and anytime I had a question or concern answered me right away. This was a destination wedding for us as we all live in Florida, so we had actually booked it from the pictures. Katie made an appointment when I was in Connecticut so I could see it about 11 months prior. The bride ad groom did not see it until a few days before but they really loved it. ( I am the mother of the groom and did all of the planning) I can't say enough wonderful things about the place. They will even open the museum that is associated with the Webb Barn for an additional 100.00, which I thought was a nice touch.
First of all, the Webb Barn is an absolutely gorgeous venue for a summer wedding, allowing the safety of indoors in case of foul weather with the most amazing grounds (we got gorgeous weather!). Most importantly though, Katie from the museum was extremely helpful and responsive, working with us through a covid-related cancellation and assisting with all aspects, from the caterer, to the decoration, the setup, absolutely everything. She met with us multiples times and was always available to answer questions. She was even texting with me on the day of, when I had a surprise guest show up last minute! Everything was perfect and I also highly recommend going with the list of vendors they provide. Our caterer, decorator and DJs were the best!
The Webb Barn was a dream come true. Every staff member we met, especially Katie, was so helpful and kind. This is the place to get married if you’re looking for a rustic setting steeped in American history.
Our rustic fall New England wedding was brought to life by this incredible venue! We first visited on a beautiful fall day and didn't bother going to any other venue - we knew this was just what we wanted. Katie was wonderful to work with throughout, made sure we had everything we needed, recommended vendors, and sent reminders to make sure no details were missed. On the day of the wedding, Howard was there to oversee everything from set up to break down. He ensured every detail was taken care of, which allowed my husband and I to be fully present with our guests. Thank you to all at the Webb Barn for making our day incredible!
The Webb barn was the perfect place that checked the boxes for my wedding. It was a great size, historic and well kept. The contact were great and helpful. I really enjoyed having my concept turn to reality at this location and would recommend it for anyone looking to book an event.
The Webb Barn is so beautiful! It truly is an entirely DIY space, which means a LOT more work for you. If you have a very specific vision and are very organized, it's an absolutely beautiful 'blank canvas'.
Positives:
-The space itself and Old Wethersfield is pure New England small-town charm. It was exactly the vibe we were going for, and the garden was beautiful for our June wedding. No bugs, either, which was a concern of mine!
-Depending on if there is another wedding during your weekend, there is a lot of flexibility in terms of when rental items can be picked up/dropped off.
-If you pick vendor(s) that knows the barn, they know exactly what works in the space and what doesn't, so you don't need to start COMPLETELY from scratch.
-The level of customization is amazing. I have been to a lot of weddings where it feels like this is just the "wedding setup" for the venue and it doesn't really seem that unique. Because you start from scratch, your wedding is as unique and different as you make it.
-You can save money, IF you are smart. DIY weddings can definitely add up, but if you are willing to find creative ways to cut costs, you can get away with splurging in other areas that matter more to you, because you aren't forced into anything. For example, we didn't do a cocktail hour, which saved us several thousand and allowed us to spend more money on the DJ and other things that really mattered to us. For most venues, that wouldn't have been an option.
-Katie is very kind and easy to work with. Connor helped us on the day-of, and he was fantastic, too!
Negatives:
-No space to do hair/makeup on site, and the B&Bs in the surrounding areas no longer allow brides to use their spaces to get ready.
-I did feel as if things were a little disorganized before the wedding. Nothing major, but I would advise that you are vigilant to make sure everything is correct in the contract, etc.
-As I mentioned above, a DIY wedding is STRESSFUL! If you have a hard time organizing ideas or having a clear vision (or have a limited amount of time or energy before the wedding) it might not be the best option. There were quite a few times during the planning process that I was wishing that I went with a more traditional space where all you have to do is pick out the catering menu and tablecloth settings, etc. But on the day of the wedding, when everything came together perfectly, I wouldn't have changed it for the world.
While I didn't have my own wedding there, I was really happy to get the chance to photograph one of my couple's weddings at Webb Barn. A lot of barn venues are in super rural areas. Webb Barn is unique because it's hidden right in the historical downtown area of Wethersfield. It has a cozier feel, which I really like. The grounds have plenty of spaces for unique photos though, like the wooded trails, garden, and pretty houses nearby. I also loved that inside the barn there's a loft area where I was able to shoot and get dancing shots from above. If you're looking for a venue with a low-key yet elegant feel and the ability to be both inside and outside during your wedding, this is a great venue!
Was a lovely spot for a wedding for my brother and sister-in-law. Though the family ownership team is lean, they were very helpful on the day and able to answer any questions we had.
I would recommend hiring a decorator to enhance the look of the space, unless you are looking for the truly rustic- which we were. Some gingham tablecloths and beautiful fairy lights were all it took us to make the space we wanted.
This is the perfect spot for a simple DIY friendly wedding!
The Webb Barn was the first venue we toured and the last!
We were looking for a venue we could bring our personal touches and customize while still having a beautiful setting. The grounds were stunning and the barn drew in the rustic theme we were looking to capture! Tucked away on the main strip of a cute little town, it looks like it is right out of a Hallmark movie, you could not ask for a better location!
Katie, the main contact for The Webb Barn, was a pleasure to work with! She was very accommodating and really allowed us to turn the space into the vision we wanted!
The elegant back yard wedding vibe, complete with food trucks, yard games and a live band was packaged perfectly at The Webb Barn!
I cannot say enough about how happy we were with our wedding on 5/11/19 at Webb Barn, it was truly the happiest day of our lives. If you are like me & love the idea of a blank (yet beautiful) canvas to truly make your own for your wedding day, this is the perfect venue for you. The barn made for an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere that we had guest after guest tell us was their favorite wedding they'd been to. Most of our guests were coming from out of state & had never seen New England, so we wanted a space that captured the essence of where we live. The historical setting & quaint barn did the trick!
Katie was great from our first visit to the barn throughout the entire process. I felt confident the entire time that we were in good hands.
My only advice would be to consider that if you are looking for an "all-inclusive" sort of venue, this probably isn't the best match as you do have to coordinate all aspects of your wedding from rentals, to food, etc. (however, we just used 90% of the recommended vendors from Katie and they were all OUTSTANDING). For someone like myself, the do it yourself mentally was perfect as I could customize everything to our preference (including a pizza truck as our wedding dinner!), but I can imagine that for others they may prefer a venue offering all of that included, it could be stressful.
If you are looking for a simple, beautiful setting to have a good ol' barn party for your big day, I can't recommend Webb Barn more.
The barn and grounds are beautiful! We had to make a few last minute changes due to some construction that is occurring on site - but our wedding day was perfect, and everything went off without a hitch the day of. Webb Barn offers an amazingly romantic and intimate setting, and we couldn't have pictured our wedding anywhere else!
We got married at Webb barn on 5/19/18. What can I say about this place except that it is a rustic wedding dream! The barn is gorgeous and the fact that I could pick my own caterer was perfect for me. There are also wonderful gardens and a patio for your cocktail hour. Katie and the rest of the staff were wonderful, friendly and helpful.
PROS:
- garden and barn are great rustic setting
- lots of parking
- easy to work with
- full kitchen
- tables and chairs provided
- amazing spaces for photos including outside historical homes, the barn and gardens
CONS:
- you have to coordinate vendors (including linens, food and drinks)
- have to stop at 10 pm
What a magical place. We were married at the Webb Barn in May and many guests said it was the best wedding they'd ever been to. The grounds are gorgeous and Katie and the team are beyond accomodating. Set in charming, Old Wethersfield, we enjoyed writing our own chapter in a place so steeped with history. We'd highly recommend this venue for anyone looking for a lovely, low key setting. Just gorgeous!
Absolutely beautiful location! Katie and Jay really made everything come together wonderfully. Priced very affordably, and the staff was very willing to work with us to make the day special. We got married near the garden, although if it rains there's also an option to get married inside the barn too. Love how historic the barn and grounds were.
The barn and the grounds are simply beautiful! It's teeming with history and character, and it felt so personal and special to have our wedding there. Katie was a pleasure to work with throughout the planning process. She was extremely responsive, and happy to help us whenever we had questions. It was clear that she really cared, and it was important to her that our wedding day was perfect. Connor was our site manager on the day of the wedding, and he was wonderful to work with as well. He was very accommodating and helpful, and played a huge role is making the day go smoothly. The wedding went off without a hitch, and we couldn't have been happier!
My daughter and son in law were married at the Webb Barn. The event was a huge success from beginning to end. I want to thank Katie for all of her assistance and guidance, from the first day we came to check out the venue, to the actual event… I feel as if she cared for them as if they were yher own … We had a blast at the reception and all our guests were impressed with the venue and the grounds. I am thankful to them for making a great day even greater.”
Warning!!!
The grounds are truly beautiful and my pictures were stunning! Katie was friendly and accommodating until my wedding day. She went back on things she had said in front of witnesses, breached our written contract and screamed “this is my fucking barn” in a manic outburst at my husband and I in front guests, our small nieces and staff. Before booking, I read a disturbing review about treatment of elderly guests. I wish I had trusted my gut and found another venue.
The big issues were:
1. Appalling treatment. Katie told us (witnessed by others) that if we paid for an extra hour after the 15-20 minutes before the property cut off time she would “ look the other way.” Fifteen minutes before the contractual end of our reception, Katie told us that we had to “get out” and that “this is my fucking barn.” When reminded her of her previous words, she verbally accosted family members who tried to calm her. When we asked if there was anything more we could do to fix it, she said no. We would have gladly payed more for the 20 minutes, but the only option given was to take an unspecified amount from our security deposit. Given her erratic behavior, this was an uncomfortable prospect.
Chaos ensued. We scrambled to do the bouquet/garter toss, lost the top of our wedding cake and likely gifts. Decorations were packed into cars that went to three states making rental return a nightmare. #honeymoonhighlights…This was all over 20 minutes that we gladly would have paid for had it been mentioned at any point including our reception. Chiefly, I was shocked at how Katie treated people. It was horrifying and beyond unprofessional.
2. Breaching our verbal agreement and written contract, which stated using flame was prohibited INSIDE the barn. Wedding day: Katie “seized” my outdoor tikki torches ($300) from my coordinator, locked them in a shed and almost prevented decorating of the tree in my ceremony despite previous conversations, nothing in the contract, and hundreds of pictures on the internet showing others doing so.
There were some additional issues such as calling me the day before my wedding to tell me that she might not have space for my caterer to drop of her supplies the night before and I would have to pay extra fees to the vendors, but really the aforementioned two points were the main problems. Some things are priceless and your wedding day is one of them. I urge you to look elsewhere.
The Webb Barn was the perfect venue for our wedding. When our guests talk about the wedding they say how gorgeous the venue was. Katie was very accommodating. She answered all of our questions and went out of her way to make our day perfect. When my cake maker couldn't make it to the venue until 10 or 11 pm the night before the wedding, she went and met her there without any issues or complaints. We had a great experience and a wonderful wedding!
I had my wedding at the Webb Barn on 9/25/15. The venue beyond exceeded my expectations! We had the ceremony outside on the grounds near the garden, and the reception was inside the barn. The weather was beautiful, all the staff were on point and extremely organized and helpful, and the setting was absolutely perfect. I liked that I got to choose all the external vendors myself (caterer, chairs, DJ, etc) - it gave me the variety and options I wanted. You have to do all that work yourself, which is what I wanted - but once you have all that set up, the day of the wedding the venue provides two day-of coordinators to help you through every single little detail. I cannot thank them enough! The Webb Barn was the picture perfect barn setting that I wanted for my wedding, and I would not have wanted it anywhere else. Not to mention my pictures are all stunning!!! :)
The Webb Barn was a beautiful place to have our wedding. Our photos came out lovely with the rustic wood and twinkle lights in the background.
The grounds and garden around the Barn are very pretty and one of the reasons we chose the space was so guests could have the option to be inside or outside. The staff are flexible in letting you set it up how you like. We had lawn games (outside), tented the patio, and brought in larger tables. All around a great space.
The Webb Barn was the most gorgeous, picturesque venue we could have imagined for our wedding. We had several appts. to see Barn venues and we stopped in our tracks once we visited the Webb Barn. We were also lucky enough to snag a date less than 6 months out since we had it on a Sunday. We had our ceremony and reception at the barn which was very convenient for us and our guests. Katie was super easy to work with and very accommodating through the entire process. She was on site throughout our wedding day and was incredibly helpful taking care of things behind the scenes along with our wedding planner so we didn't need to worry about a thing. We live in NYC and were unfamiliar with local vendors and she gave us some wonderful suggestions. The gigantic barn doors made for a grand entrance for the bridal party and myself. We also opted for the museum tour option for our guests during the cocktail hour which was a huge hit. We added some of the extras the Barn offered and it was still very affordable. I really can't say enough wonderful things about our wedding day and the experience at the Webb Barn. It felt like a fairy tale.
We had our wedding ceremony outside on the grounds of the Webb Barn and the reception under a gorgeous tent and in the Barn. It was in the middle of July and the weather was absolutely perfect. The staff, especially Katie, was wonderful. Please listen to her suggestions- she knew what she was talking about from which vendors were best to what really isn't necessary. The Barn was a little more expensive than I had hoped, especially with renting most of the tables, chairs, tent, etc. I was most disappointed with the banning of sparklers and the venue closing at 10PM, but in the end I couldn't have been happier, the guests just loved the low key feel the the wedding. It was such a beautiful day and I would recommend this Barn to anyone looking for a place out of the ordinary that provides a bit of natural beauty. Also, all brides PLEASE consider staying with your bridesmaids the night before the wedding at the Silas Robbins Bed and Breakfast. You have to see it in person- its UNBELIEVABLE and a photographer's dream!
The Webb Barn was the perfect, natural, rustic, relaxed setting for our day. The rental coordinator and site coordinator were both great! We got married on the lawn there as well and it was beautiful.
We got married by the garden and had our reception in the barn. The setting is beautiful and most of our guests had never been there before which was a definite plus. Other advantages were the amount of control we had over the vendors we used and other aspects of our wedding. Unlike a lot of other places we looked at, the Webb Barn gives you a list of preferred vendors, but doesn't limit you to their list.
As for the minuses, here are some things I would have liked to know before I placed the deposit:
They charge a lot of additional fees for things that you would think would normally be included at a venue - like dumpster rental for your caterer.
The tables they have are really small and the chairs look like they belong more at a business conference than a wedding. They also charge you a fee to remove/store their table and chairs if you rent better ones.
There is NO air conditioning other than small window units in the bathrooms and the barn heats up fast with the limited amount of airflow it gets! It was in the 90s during my June wedding and guest were either hanging outside or huddled in the bathrooms.
The public is pretty much free to wander around the grounds during your pictures, ceremony, reception, etc. I lost count of how many times I was asked who the random couple clad in shorts and tee shirts or group of people eating ice cream cones and blocking the photographer's shot were.
MOSQUITOS ARE TERRIBLE! As soon as the sun went down I was covered in mosquitos. They were under my dress, stuck in my veil, and biting my arms and legs by the dozen. I looked down at one point and counted 7 of the buggers on my lower arm! I get that this is an outdoor venue, but there are several things the Barn could do to keep the bugs to a minimum.
All in all, we would still have our wedding there if we could do it all over again - I just might have done early May or late September instead.
The Barn was such a wonderful place to get married. We used all local vendors and the entire day was filled with people who wanted to help us out and went above and beyond what we needed. Such a wonderful and beautiful place and a nice getaway to a historic and special town.
Unique venue. Lots of compliments from guests. Staff very friendly and helpful.
The Webb Barn is absolutely beautiful and worked great with our mason jar/antique themed wedding. The garden was blooming all spring/summer whenever I went to visit. The lawn was cut/clean and they allowed us to put up a tent to accomodate the number of guests. There were no bugs out which was also a concern of mine. The downsides are 1. no air conditioning (it was hot/sweaty, but everyone was dancing anyway so i guess it didn't make a big deal) 2. generally weather dependent (even though everything can be done inside the barn, you are also paying for the lawn/garden/patio which cant be used if it is raining) 3. it is stressful and expensive to get catering/bar services seperate from the venue location.
Katie is very friendly and helpful. Howard was great on the day of the wedding and allowed us to meet in the museum to regroup after a surprise downpour. Overall, unique, beautiful and loved by all the guests.
It was nice to be outside for the wedding, but be prepared to be a DIY kind of person. The only thing the barn does is set up the tables and chairs. It is VERY expensive to have any extra time added, and four hours is a lot shorter than you think. BE ON TIME!
Beautiful place, decent price. No complaints whatsoever except they are a little aloof, not very involved.
My husband and I had a beautiful wedding at the Webb Barn. We loved the barn itself and the surrounding town of Old Wethersfield for its charming appeal. It's great for detail-oriented and DIY brides that want to plan every last detail of the wedding because it literally is a blank canvas. You have to pay a site fee, which is somewhat expensive, and you have to coordinate with a caterer and rental company. The barn has chairs and tables that seat up to 130 people but they aren't that appealing - tables are tiny and chairs look like office chairs. But if you're willing to put in the time, planning, and coordination, it has real potential to be beautiful. Staff at the barn are also great. You also have to be willing to do a lot yourself, i.e. set up and take down, and take down may have to happen the night of the wedding if they are hosting another wedding the next day. But I love the space and our wedding was absolutely everything I ever wanted.
We wanted to get married outside and then have a reception in a barn. The place we chose was perfect! The ground around the barn have a beautiful garden and these wonderful historic houses. And the barn looked like something out of a martha stewart magazine. Totally rustic and beautiful.;The mananger of the venue is a little hard to get a hold of sometimes and a little forgetful. I knew this going into everything so i was prepared and fine with that.
