Telling your story through authentic imagery
Confident, impossible to offend, kind, calming, and inexpensive considering wealth of experience.
I'm Michael and I'm the Wedding Photographer Guy. I work closely with my partner, Rose, to create an alternative, all-inclusive, professional wedding, elopement, and engagement photography service dedicated to providing a laid-back and authentic photography experience. We are also known as Nilas Photography and own and operate Cobalt Studios PDX, Portland's premiere photo studio and camera-centric community building space.
So, why photograph weddings?
The answer isn't the industry.
No. The wedding industry and photography are not the same. The wedding industry itself is the only part I don't like, couples excluded.
The answer isn't the money.
I'm not here to charge luxury rates. I come from nothing and don't need much more than I have. So long as I can cover the bills at the end of the day.
I do weddings and elopements because I enjoy being the odd one out in this industry.
I work with couples because I think love is badass. I feel it should be expressed and represented truthfully. Candidly.
I do this because the industry can be such a craphole at times, and I want to create some solace in the intense process of planning and undertaking a wedding. To be an anchor and a positive aspect throughout.
I do this because I love a sense of community. Because I love to build mine and I love to witness others.
I do this because it keeps me on my toes, shooting in new places and unexpected conditions. It keeps my craft sharp.
I'm still doing it, 200+ weddings later, because I can handle it. Because I love it. Capturing moments for couples, expected and the unexpected, gives me a fulfillment that no other subject compares to. Because it's a gift to be granted this position, and I feel genuinely thankful.
Though I know my way around a camera, in my own opinion, such a small fraction of what a good photographer brings to the table is technical photography skills.
Knowing your wedding photographer is IMPORTANT. Your photographer can easily make or break your day. Feel able to be authentic, enjoy your day and your community, don't feel like you're at a big photoshoot, and harness the benefit of the wealth of experiences from someone who's seen lots couples tying the knot!
Your wedding is a time to kick back and celebrate your love, and your loved ones while you party your ass off. My job is more than just a job. It's a gratefully accepted challenge and extension of my artistic passions. It keeps my camera strapped around my neck where it belongs and I feel beyond fortunate for what I do. I want to be right there celebrating with you and experiencing all the laughter, adventure, tears, nervous sweats, brews chugged, cake smashed, that one friend who really likes to shake it on the dance floor... all of it, right through the viewfinder. With every click of the shutter, a memory immortalized.

Michael was absolutely fantastic. We did our engagement photos and wedding with him and both were incredible experiences. He made it so easy to be in front of the camera when it can be uncomfortable. The shots we got were so fun and unique! He captured little details to big moments and everything in between. He was flexible with all the different locations we needed photos, and was exactly where he needed to be at the right time. Rose is a fun partner and was an excellent addition to our engagements and wedding. Not only great people and artists, but people we'd call friends too. I would 10/10 book again and hope to do a shoot in studio someday.
Michael and Rose were fantastic to work with. Aside from the amazing quality of the photos from our wedding, they're both wonderful people that bring great energy to their work and are really fun to be around. I cannot recommend them enough
We chose Michael because of his fantastic portfolio, and because our wedding was going to be largely outdoors and he seemed very comfortable with that. But he doesn't just take pretty pictures, he is a fantastic human, worked so hard at our wedding making sure we got the shots we wanted and came up with great and unique ideas for photos. Do not hesitate to use him and his team!
Any questions?
Michael and Rose are incredible!
As a wedding planner and coordinator, it is extremely important to have a great vendor team/partnership I can work closely with to deliver a seamless wedding the couples dream of - Michael & Rose are that, the incredibly & amazingly wonderful wedding vendor/photographer team I had the great pleasure to work with.
Michael and Rose are very easy and pleasant to work with. They are professional, down-to-earth, reliable, patient, genuine, supportive and, of course, they take amazing photos! They have very strong ownership - if they say they'd do it, they would get it done GREAT! I am also very impressed by their very fast turn-around time. They sent out the wedding photos to the couple we worked with about 2 weeks after the wedding!!! Also, they are responsive to communication.
If you are looking for a photographer for your wedding or any special occasion, look no further. I highly recommend Michael and Rose because I have full confidence that you will be beyond joyfully impressed :)
I very much look forward to working with Michael and Rose in the next wedding! I know it will be amazing!
Not only was Michael an incredible photographer, but he is an incredible guy. He made me and my husband feel like our best selves on our wedding day. It shouldn't be hard to be happy on your wedding day, but he always was keeping the mood up and light to make sure we had our biggest smiles on. We showed him some examples of pictures we wanted and he executed it all so well. My husband is the kind of guy who doesn't love getting his picture taken, and he even said during the shoot that he was having fun. That right there should be all the review you need.
Michael is an excellent photographer and a great addition to our elopement. We truly appreciated his flexibility as our site plans were TBD up until the moment we rallied in a parking lot out on Mount Hood. The whole endeavor involved a 4 mile round-trip walk down an icy Forest Road in near freezing conditions along with the roughly 2 to 3 hours we were out in the woods for our ceremony. He was incredibly laid-back and a true joy to have with us on our wedding day. On top of all of this, the pictures were amazing! The processing/editing turnaround was quick, and we are very happy with how everything turned out. Would absolutely recommend him through your photography needs!
I love Michael!! Found him via the Knot and we met up for drinks to get to know each other a bit more and get vibes. He's a super chill guy, and he loved my dog which is a plus.
My grandma's health started to decline in the winter so I asked if he would be able to do a last-minute engagement shoot so I could give some photos to her since the wedding was still almost a year away. He was so helpful and we got on his schedule a week and a half later, and he gave us some beautiful photos quickly after!
He also did our wedding photos. Again, a very chill experience and he was so kind to us while I was beating myself up for being 30 minutes late- -making all the photos at the site have to be a little rushed (my fault, not his!). Our dog was with us and he did his best to get her attention to look at him/the camera by making these hilarious sounds.
We invited him to dinner with our guests afterwards and he took a few photos of us at dinner cutting the cake which was lovely!
One of my favorite photos, other than the bride+groom and ceremony shots, is actually one he randomly got of my husband using a lint roller. It really brings back some little memories like that of the day.
Post-wedding: Great! I loved that it was super easy to access and download the finished photos. He gives you a code to your gallery that anyone can use, and you can create a number of favorite lists to make it easier to download specific batches (eg: list for grandma, Instagram, parents, dog, etc.). That was a major plus. You also have options to download full-resolution or web-sized, so you don't have to upload five 3GB photos to Instagram.
If you love a moody and/or color-accurate vibe, then he's definitely the artist to go for.
My husband and I hired Michael to shoot our wedding and it was one of the best decisions we made during our planning process. He is extremely personable, down to earth and go-with-the-flow. He can easily handle a large group of people and instruct them on where to be to make sure the end result is perfect. Michael went above and beyond what we wanted and now we have so many awesome photos from our wedding. The photos, also, came back in a timely manner so there wasn’t the long wait that you can get from some photographers. If you are looking for an awesome photographer for any event (or even a private session), you should seriously consider booking Michael!
Michael was truly the greatest photographer we could have asked for! The photos were amazing and he felt like such an important part of our wedding. Months later and we are still talking about how happy we are we picked him as our photographer. He did a great job making us, and everyone around him, feel comfortable throughout the day!
His artistic vision and creativity are truly unmatched. For me, our photographer choice was one of our most important decisions because they are what we will keep for a lifetime! Michael goes above and beyond, he loves love, and is clearly so passionate about what he does.
We had such a great experience working with Michael! He worked so seamlessly to photograph our special day, whether it was candid or posed shots, he captured so many special moments.
Michael was so much fun to work with. Communication was always easy and I loved how relaxed he was during the wedding. He definitely made it fun. Our photos turned out beautiful and I am so happy with the colors. I would definitely recommend him to everyone!
Michael was FANTASTIC! He was very down to earth which is what we wanted when we started looking at photographers. He was flexible and really wanted to understand what we were looking for. He didn't have his own agenda or thoughts on what our wedding photos should be - he worked to learn what we wanted and then gave us that! He was great the day of the wedding itself and was relaxed - which I really appreciated. Most of the pictures we got were off-the-cuff and not posed - exactly what we wanted. He also took a few formal photos for the parents ;). My fiancé loved him and multiple times said he would just hang out with him as a friend - that's how comfortable we were with him. And while we got pictures of everything we wanted - I never felt he was intrusive - he captured some great close-ups during the ceremony and I honestly don't remember him being there! It did take a while to get our photos back after the wedding - but it was worth the wait - I LOVE them! I would 100% recommend Michael!!
I reached out to Michael just less than a week before I proposed to my girlfriend to take photos of the engagement. In just a few hours he gave me a call to plan everything out. My fiancé and I were visiting from out of town and he gave me the perfect plan and location to get the best photos at Cannon Beach!! It was an amazing experience and Michael is super kind, knowledgeable, and a great photographer. He was super busy with other events that weekend and drove in the early morning to Cannon Beach to get the proposal at sunrise. He went above and beyond and the photos are STUNNING. If we lived in the Portland area we 100% would have asked him to be our wedding photographer. Thank you so much Michael !!
Michael was an incredibly down to earth guy that was excellent at putting us at ease- especially since I hate having my picture taken! He is the perfect blend of casual and professional, very knowledgeable about what makes the perfect photo but doesn't force you into awkward, stiff poses. We did our engagement photos in a national park and it felt like hanging out with an old friend, coming up with fun scenes and poses on the fly without it feeling like a chore. His ability to capture candid moments is phenomenal! At the wedding he fit right in with the guests and it didn't feel like we hired him for a job- I trusted him with the rings and was so thrilled to have him be part of such a significant day. I'd absolutely recommend Michael if you're looking for someone with a different eye for capturing the fun, loving, unique moments of any occasion!
Michael is a seriously talented individual who really matched what we were hoping for from a wedding photographer. My fiancé and I are lower-key individuals who just wanted two things from wedding photos: images that highlighted our family being together and capturing candid moments of the day. Not only did Michael deliver on that front, he also went above and beyond in seeking out cool spots to do couples photos, etc. On our drive up to a spot overlooking the mountain that he had scouted earlier in the day, he was inspired by some steam coming off the road and had us take photos in it that turned out completely magical. To someone with zero photography knowledge (i.e. me) it was incredible to see him in his element, taking something that seemed inconsequential and turning it into a work of art. We had so many comments from guests on how kind and great Michael was, and how he did such a great job of being a fly on the wall and capturing great memories. Michael was also great about answering his cell before our wedding; he answered his phone immediately when we called a few weeks before to touch base and wrap up loose ends. Michael, you rock, and we wish you all the success life can afford! Thanks for being there with us and for being such a mellow, great person.
First I know there are two sides to every story. This is mine, I am now 6 months after my wedding writing this review because I was hoping for a resolution. To start the positives, Michael has a great personality and he was fun to work with.
For my issues, lack of response, there have been numerous times I would reach out with a question or issue since my wedding and there were times it would be up to a month before I got a response and every time I did it was always a apology that he was so busy and overwhelmed which I understand, the wedding industry has been crazy the last few years.
Second, which is actually my biggest issue, I made sure Michael knew my dad had passed away and my mom and I were very close, yet I do not have a single picture of myself (the bride) with my mom for the full day, yet he got picture of my husband which each of his family members. And on your wedding day you are so scatter brained you do not think about the details, since you hired professionals, and after the fact when I brought it up and how sad I was I was told “well I did ask if we got everything” which was not professional. I also had a picture of my dad on my bouquet that I did not get a picture of either, and those picture can not be recreated.
Overall there were only 5 specific picture I had wanted, and out of those 5 I reviewed 0, even though I know for a fact we took at least 3 of them and when I asked he told me no he didn’t get them.
Another big issue is the quality of photos, I was so excited as every bride is after their wedding to get picture printed out, and as of today I have not have one picture printed, everything that I have tried to print over the side of a 5”x7” I have gotten back is too low quality or blurry. I have reached out and got told well I have never had this problem before. And not much else for help.
Finally, I paid for the all day package, and talked to Michael about the number of photos expected, and was told over the phone he had no limit and I brought up other photographers I had been reaching out to her a number of 60-80finished photos per hour and he told me that was lower then his average, well we received just around 400 photos for having him at our wedding for 10+ hours. That comes out to 40 photos per hour with I would say almost half are duplicates.
I was also told by Michael that he was so busy this fall he was having to outsource his editing to his friends in the business, which if you are doing that you do need to tell your other clients as well.
Everything has been one excuse after the other and to this day I have not received any help or and resolution to any of the problems just apologies.
The picture I got back from our photo booth have been way better quality, and almost $1,500 less then I paid for my wedding pictures.
I really did not want to have to write I review because I know how reviews effect small businesses but I do not feel like I have been given any other choice, I do not want another bride to have to deal with the same bull that I have.

Anna, Thank you for sharing your experience. In 150 weddings, I've never had a bad review, so I do take this very seriously and I truly wish we could've shared a different experience. This is very unfortunate and I'm not entirely certain what t...
o say, as I'm not keen on a dispute. We did share a lot of back-and-forth since the wedding, and it is regrettable that we couldn't find a resolution. Regarding response times, I do have two separate photography businesses and I am very busy, but I do state on my site and tell all my wedding couples they are welcome to call my personal phone anytime. Still, I can understand the frustration and wish our correspondence would've been smoother. I do not recall you mentioning 5 specific photos, and I'm not sure why I would take an image and not deliver it. I'm not sure what you're referring to. With image quality, I had many other couples in the very near timeframe surrounding your wedding who have printed their images or simply haven't reported any issue. I tried to ask questions or resolve the issue, but you only recently told me the image file size and previously stated you might even just throw away the flash drive because you don't want it. My site and my pricing sheet state how many images I provide, if that fell short of expectations, I'm sorry, but I thought we got some really great images. I don't deliver 60-80 images per hour. All of my images are culled and edited and a huge portion of the time you had me at the venue everyone was preparing or in pajamas. I did mention possibly outsourcing images, but I did edit your images myself. I make time at every wedding to do any important group images and I did ask many, many times if we had taken every important group or single portrait. The dynamic of your family is not something I'm familiar with, and when people are not in the location they are supposed to be or things are jumbled around as they were, it does get a bit wild. While I've never experienced missing a shot like that in 150 weddings, your wedding, unfortunately, taught me that it may be beneficial to have a checklist to avoid missing a moment in chaotic times such as that. I can not recall where your mother was during the family pictures, and I do regret not capturing that image. I captured all of the images with Travis and his family because they were either present during the allotted group portrait time or made themselves available when I was roaming the grounds looking for groups. My responses in our private discussions have been thorough, not brief and without care, as it seems in your review, I just want to make that known. I offered to help resolve the printing issue, and for a while, I was confused because it seemed your issue was that your image was being cropped poorly due to canvas wrapping and losing the top of a building or feet. I also offered any kind of reshoot since you stated you were dissatisfied and you said you were going to hire someone else for $1500. I did attempt to offer assistance based on information provided or even additional images, but I really felt like what you were aiming for was a refund, as you told me you wanted to throw the images away and hire someone else. I truly have never received a response like yours, and so this has been nothing short of a learning lesson. I still wish I could do something to assist you, but you've been unwilling to accept anything I can offer you. I am sorry we've found ourselves in dispute, this is truly a situation I hoped to never experience. I love my clients and I really enjoyed capturing memories for you. I feel horrible knowing you believe the images are tainted and I aim to learn from our experience so that I can grow my business in a positive direction.
My fiance and I hired Michael (Nilas) for our upcoming wedding. We needed a photographer early because we wanted engagement photos to incorporate into save-the-dates. He was very professional but friendly and was very understanding when we were running late for our planned appointment. I would definitely recommend him to any bride and especially one who wants to be more adventurous!
We had a destination wedding near Yosemite in August 2018. It was a multi day event and I was looking for a photographer who was flexible, and whose pictures fit my wedding's style. Nilas Photography was it. He was initially out of my budget, but I couldn't find any photographer who fit my criteria, and adjusted my budget to make him work -- and I'm SO GLAD I DID. Michael was amazing. He was there to capture all of the little moments that were important to me in my wedding, without being obtrusive.
My husband is notorious for being a poor subject for photos -- he never looks like himself because he gets all stiff. Michael and my husband got along so well, it was like they were old friends. It's amazing how this made the whole wedding seem more at ease.
Michael's photos capture the essence of the moments -- the emotions that bring the wedding day back to life when you look at them years later. Things like a curious child, a father looking at his newborn baby (my wedding was very kid friendly), and my exasperated husband.
I also wanted "the photo" -- you know what I'm talking about -- the photo that encapsulates all of the reasons why you hire a photographer in the first place -- the quintessential photo that says -- "THAT was my wedding" -- and Nilas gave that to me. I'll forever be grateful for that.
Take a look at his portfolio, and if you like his photos, hire this guy. I totally recommend him. My family was so impressed with his pictures, in fact, that he's photographing my brother's wedding in July!
We hired Michael to do our engagement photos and I'm so glad we did! He was incredibly easy to work with from the very beginning. My (now husband) and I are not picture takers so we were really nervous being in front the camera. Michael felt almost like a buddy just hanging out taking our picture; he made the entire experience very comfortable and we actually enjoyed ourselves. The turnaround time on the pictures was quick! I absolutely loved the way they turned out and we ended up using two photographs to display at our reception instead of one. I am so glad we found Michael, his prices are very affordable, he was very flexible on traveling to various locations to get the right shot, and he was a lot of fun to work with.
Michael did both our engagement and wedding photos, and they turned out awesome. Everyone who sees our photos remarks on how unique and gorgeous they are.
Michael did a wonderful job at our wedding. He spent all day getting photos of us getting ready, the wedding, the reception and all the craziness that followed. He was great at blending into the background and capturing cute moments. What I loved is that he didn’t take over the wedding and hold people up to take photos for ages. The photos turned out gorgeous and I was so impressed with the colors and quality. Beautiful.
Michael did a fantastic job! We were having a difficult time finding a photographer that was willing to handle our wedding as it was a very small affair. We live in Los Angeles so we weren't able to meet Michael prior, so in all honesty, we were sort of taking our chances. He was wonderful. Our photos were sent to us within a week of our wedding and they're beautiful. We couldn't be happier.
We chose Michael and his partner Krista for our wedding photography/videography and we could not have been happier. We had Michael do our engagement shoot as well and we got so many compliments on his creative shots and beautiful editing. He is punctual, laid back and kind so it was awesome to work with him. He has a great vision for stylized photos and poses, as well as an eye for what will look good in candids. Krista is really sweet as well. They are a happy, trustworthy team who did an incredible job commemorating a very special day in my life. Thanks guys!!
Michael shot our wedding in February, and we couldn't be happier with the results! He made sure to capture every special moment from beginning to end, and provided a wide variety of elegant and fun photos that truly showed what a fantastic day it was. He also did a great job of locating beautiful and unique backgrounds for our pre-ceremony photos, as well as our engagement photos. We would highly recommend Nilas Photography for any occasion!
