As a slightly older couple, my (now) wife and I spent two years assembling a dream team of vendors for our May 2023 wedding. That process got off to a terrific start with Reverend John “Skip” Sweeney. From our first meeting during Covid, Skip was always responsive, organized, sensitive, polite, caring, adaptable, thorough, and informed. He went to great lengths inquiring as to our personal and shared feelings and experiences toward each other, in order to handcraft a unique and proper ceremony that would hold meaning not only for us, but for our participants and our guests as well. When he submitted his written ceremony for our review, he remained graciously accepting to our fine tuning right up to the morning of our wedding day. And while we were interviewing people to handle our catering, flowers, music, et cetera, it was interesting to note their pleasure in working again with Skip. They knew from their own experiences that he is easy to work with and that he is not one to simply take over and make the ceremony about himself, as had been the case with other officiants. In the months leading up to our wedding day, Skip never failed to keep us aware of the need for acquiring divorce decrees, a marriage license, marriage certificates, notarization, and even the fees charged by associated departments in our state. Immediately after our ceremony, he wasted no time personally delivering our license to the Town Clerk’s office. He provided important “how to” information, phone numbers, and timelines that we would not have known about if not for him, along with advice on name changing and ways to save money in the future when we might need to produce certified marriage documentation. You name it, Skip had it covered. Since the wedding, our family and friends continue telling us how beautiful the ceremony was. Thank you, Skip. Skip is easily the best officiant around and a no brainer decision for your wedding. For us, the ceremony was the most important part of the wedding, it’s kind of the whole point right?? So we wanted to find the right person who could make it that intimate, romantic, unique ceremony that defined our relationship. We wanted to do that without burdening a family member/friend with that challenge and forcing them to do some public speaking as well. So we began interviewing a few officiants and everything felt too cookie cutter or the connection was not there. Then we met Skip. We hit it off immediately and felt very comfortable sharing our lives and relationship with him. After our conversation, Skip drafted up a custom made ceremony just for us. When he read it back to us, my fiancé started crying and I knew that was a wrap. He has the ability to really see your love for what it is, capture it, then put it into words, no easy task. Everything was customizable but we made very few changes because of how well Skip had already done. He is very accommodating of guest speakers as well as we had multiple. During the rehearsal and on the day of, Skip is the king of cool. He makes everything run seamlessly and keeps everyone calm and poised throughout. Skip has such an enchanting demeanor that, during the ceremony it felt like it was just him, my fiancé, and I at the alter, meanwhile there was not a dry eye in the audience of our one hundred plus guests. Skip is very responsive to all correspondence and was very helpful in taking care of all the logistics in handling our marriage license. We are so thankful to have had him aboard during this journey, and you will be too.

When we decided to get married we knew we wanted to have a semi-formal ceremony but also keep it non traditional and not in the church. We found Skip through the knot and based on his reviews immediately set up a call. It was clear that Skip was a professional and that he is confident and comfortable with what he does. We enjoyed working with Skip, he sent us a draft ceremony very quickly which gave us a lot of time to look over things and change the things that we wanted to change. Skip officiated my sisters wedding and did such a wonderful job I didn’t hesitate to contact him when it was my turn. He was kind, respectful and accommodating throughout the entire process. Hiring Skip to officiate my 2021 October wedding was by far the right decision. My husband and I met Skip back in 2019. He came prepared with ceremony details for us to look at and took the time out of his day to really get to know us, which in turn created such a special ceremony. My husband and I had to reschedule our 2020 wedding due to COVID, and during the months in which our wedding planning was halted Skip was consistent in checking in with us, and on every holiday he sent us a heartfelt message. It was so special to feel thought of and cared for during those difficult months. Finally, when wedding planning was back on track, Skip was attentive in checking in and made sure our ceremony was everything we wanted it to be. On our wedding day, Skip stood out in the rain with us to allow for our dream of getting married outside in a beautiful garden a reality. Skip officiated our wedding in June. He was amazing. He was prompt in contacting us back, and I knew after our initial conversation that he would be a great fit. He took the time to really talk to both of us, to get to know us individually and as a couple. He asked questions to understand what was important to us, even went as far as to make sure his outfit didn't clash with the bridal party. The ceremony he wrote was beautiful. He told our story perfectly. Skip is warm, engaging, funny, and supportive. Skip was in touch with helpful tips leading up to the wedding- going as far as the week of to remind us not to watch the weather and to make sure we did something fun together not tied to the wedding! At the ceremony, Skip coached us on making sure that we stopped to absorb the moments so that we would always remember our day. We originally booked Skip back in September 2019 for our August 2020 wedding. Because of the pandemic we had to postpone to July 2nd, 2021. Hiring Skip was one of the best choices we made. He was so proactive and helped at every step of the wedding process. He crafted the ceremony script early and let us look at it to see if we wanted to make any changes. And he super helpful when we were writing our own vows. He was always sending us sweet reminders in the days leading up to the wedding and helping us focus on what was important (that we were getting married) and not on the little details. He was a professional through and through. And we had many guests remark to us afterwards that they thought our ceremony was incredibly special. We couldn’t recommend Skip enough. He made our ceremony something that we will cherish forever.

Skip was great! Even with all the covid restrictions (not being able to actually meet us) he did a stellar job capturing what we wanted for our wedding day. He was very responsive and always provided us helpful information and checked in regularly until the big day.

Skip was wonderful from start to finish. We got married in July. Skip made the whole process so seamless - from meeting, getting to know us, writing a perfect ceremony, and handling all aspects of the marriage license. Only reason for 4/5 stars is because he did have some name slip ups. The biggest was "Bryce, you may now kiss your bride." (I am Bryce, the bride). It did make for a funny picture!

Just shy of five years ago, Reverend Skip officiated the wedding of my sister and brother-in-law. After witnessing first hand Skip's friendly and warm personality, and sense of humor, I knew he would be someone I would remember for my big day. I was thrilled when I reached out to Skip and he told me he was available for our June 30th wedding. Leading up to the big day, he was wonderful to work with. So responsive, and so helpful with our questions about the marriage license process. After a phone call and a meeting in person, he took what he learned about us as a couple and weaved it through the ceremony he wrote to make it uniquely ours. He also helped us select readings for our two young ceremony readers. On our wedding day he made our ceremony so special with his sentiments and storytelling, and he reminded us to really stop and absorb the moment that we are pronounced husband and wife. Skip officiated our wedding this summer and did an amazing job. We spoke with a fair number of officiants from the Newport area, and we immediately felt most comfortable working with Skip. When we first started our wedding planning, we did not have a clear picture for how the ceremony would unfold, but we had some ideas. Skip was very patient, and generous with his time, and helped us come to an agreement on a great plan for a ceremony. As we got closer to the wedding date, Skip made sure we got our marriage license on time and he reviewed each of our vows and gave us feedback. Skip was so easy to work with and made the ceremony part of wedding planning so stress free! We found Skip by looking through reviews on the knot and he lived up to all the good reviews. We were stressed by the idea of writing our own ceremony and did not want to put a big responsibility on one of our friends to officiate. Our families are also both very religious (one catholic, one lutheran) and while we are not terribly religious we wanted to respect our upbringing and include some religious elements to the ceremony. Skip did a great job of incorporating this. He also added some personal elements which were a hit with the crowd. He really helped in organizing the rehearsal. He was very communicative and answered emails very quickly. Would definitely recommend!!

Skip was recommended to us by Katie at the Glen Manor House and are SO happy we had him officiate our wedding. We were not from the area and not very religious so we were stressing about how and where to find the perfect person to marry us. I gave this daunting task to my then fiance and after contacting Skip our stresses were put at ease. Skip was extremely personable, charming, and I felt fully confident in him giving us a great ceremony. While we are not very religious ourselves, we knew we wanted to make our families happy with our river-side ceremony so Skip asked us on a 1-10 scale how religious we wanted our ceremony and we opted for a 3. My other concern was our ceremony being very generic since we are not from the area and didn't have enough time for our officiant to get to know us. He called us a few weeks before the wedding and asked us some friendly questions. I was presently surprised at how much he incorporated our short conversation with him into our ceremony. The day of the rehearsal was our first time meeting Skip and he really made us feel like we picked the perfect person. He was both funny and professional and our ceremony was my favorite part of the whole day. If you are having any concerns about picking an officiant, give Skip a call and I am sure he will put you at ease.

He was very on point and had our marriage license submitted the Monday immediately following our Saturday wedding. He also has a wonderful speaking voice. Everyone loved Skip.!

My fiance Tracy and I found Skip here on The Knot. Do yourself a favor and hire Skip. An officiant is a huge part of your ceremony and should not be taken lightly. Skip was easy to communicate with and incredibly patient. He meets with you to go over your thoughts and wishes for the ceremony and gets back to you with a ceremony script incorporating all of your wishes. He then makes changes as you desire so in the end there is no question of how the ceremony will progress, who speaks, readings, and of course the rings and vows. Skip was absolutely fantastic! He was the only officiant we met with, and we loved him the moment we first met him! Our ceremony was perfect, which he wrote for us(besides the vows) based on information he got from us, as well as our wedding website. He is very timely, and very professional.
