As Good As It Gets Catering by Cheryl’s on 12th

Cheryls on 12th is our go-to breakfast spot near our home in Portland. When we learned about their catering service, As Good As it Gets, we knew we NEEDED them on our special day! They worked with us to curate a menu filled with our favorite foods – various slider options, mac’n’cheese & salads. The meal was better than we could have ever imagined & our guests LOVED it! They coordinated our rental intake & return with our vendor. This was above & beyond because it removed one additional task off my plate, so I could truly just focus on getting married! From tasting, to planning, to day of, we truly couldn’t have asked for a better partner & team to work with for your most special events.

We loved working with Cheryl’s for our wedding! Their food is amazing, we did the maple-glazed chicken and wild salmon for our entrees and they were both a huge hit. Their staff is lovely and we felt well-taken care of through the planning process, our tasting, and the day itself. Our bartenders were fun and kept the drinks and good times going. We have been to weddings where the caterers didn’t not bring enough food, but at ours we had plenty of extras that we’ll continue to enjoy over the next several days and nobody left hungry! We love Cheryl’s!

We loved our catering experience with As Good As It Gets. The food at our wedding was delicious and crowd-pleasing! Leading up to the main event, we went in for two tastings to determine our cocktail hour and buffet menus. Our catering coordinators were attentive to every note we suggested, even down to halving the cucumbers instead of cubing them in the salad! They said no request was too small. We also hired their bartenders who were great. Something extra that I thought was above and beyond: we ordered desserts from two bakeries near Cheryl's (Saint Cupcake and Petunia's for gluten free) and the catering coordinator offered to pick up and deliver those orders as well instead of us having to handle. It's those details and excellent service that made this caterer the right choice for us.

They were very professional, and got all the details right, including our guests with dietary restrictions! We loved the food and didn't need to worry about anything on our wedding day. Guests also loved our signature cocktail drinks.

As Good as it Gets Catering was amazing from the beginning! Our initial caterer fell through and they came to the rescue when it was down to the wire. The food was awesome, the service, the communication, the set up was flawless. Would definitely recommend to anyone!

I am giving three stars because in fairness the food on our wedding day tasted amazing, and I love that they pack up the leftovers for the couple. However, working with this caterer was one of the most stressful parts of planning our wedding, and I would not recommend them. Our experience started at the related restaurant, Cheryl’s on 12th. During our process of looking for caterers we figured we would check out the food at Cheryl’s because it was a little hard for us to schedule a tasting during the week because we were out of town, and Cheryl’s is where a tasting would ultimately be and a lot of the things we wanted to taste were on the general menu. We had a really bad experience with our server and followed up with As Good As It Gets (AGAIG) about why we had lost some interest about we ate at Cheryl’s. Cheryl’s made it up to us by giving us our tasting for free, which was very much appreciated. During the tasting, we really liked several dishes and we thought the chef was super nice and personable. We decided to lock in with AGAIG and wrote off the server incident as a fluke. As we approached the few weeks before our wedding day, things started coming off of the rails. First, prior to the contract deadline, we asked to change the seasonal vegetables to grilled carrots. We received a bunch of pushback on that change, even though we timely made it and it was just changing vegetables. Two or three days before the wedding, we discovered that AGAIT does not offer serveware for family style catering. I am not talking dinnerware like the plates and napkins guest actually use, I am talking serveware like platters and serving spoons. I reviewed all of our communications and the contract and this detail was not in there. It was also particularly surprising given that we paid more to do family style, and AGAIT was providing other service items for drinks, passed appetizers, and to go boxes. We also found out that they do provide serveware for buffet style, which would have been a cheaper option than we chose. We had met/communicated with AGAIT about the plan numerous times (and they do offer family style—that was not a special request), yet the fact that they did not have a plan on how to actually serve their food or that we needed to have such a plan was never mentioned. It still would not have been mentioned if I didn’t pick up a stray comment during the carrot conversation. This ended up in us incurring a significant, unexpected charge with our rentals company for serveware days before the wedding. It also led to a lot of stress during the week of the wedding. On the wedding day, the food was fantastic and we ultimately got our carrots (though, we did not know that until dinner was served). However, the caterer did not make sure the groom and I got the passed appetizers like they were supposed to (I ended up only getting one of three on my own) and they did not get me drinks either (though, I am not sure they planned to do this). Also, one of the catering company’s managers who I spoke with related to the serveware came to the wedding to make sure everything went smoothly, which was appreciated. However, he also approached me during my wedding to introduce himself and state that’s why he was there and to ask if I was happy with the carrots, which I found poorly timed given we were in the middle of our reception.

The catering and staff on the day of our wedding was fantastic - the food was good, and the staff did exactly as expected and were punctual and friendly. Working with Makiah was also great, as she is quick to respond and helped with any questions or requests we had. There were a couple things that didn't work out the way we would have wanted. - Hidden fees: in our initial request for information, we asked for a transparent overview of all the costs and fees that we would be looking at. A couple weeks before the wedding, there were hundreds of dollars of fees that were not shared beforehand (i.e., trash collection, turning tables around, etc.). We likely still would have booked them if we had known this upfront, but it didn't make us feel good to have such huge and unexpected costs billed to us weeks before the wedding. - Horrible recommendation for tableware company. They recommended that we use the Details Department for our tableware needs, which was the worst experience of our wedding planning process, given that company's unresponsiveness. We were not given another option, but we wish we had pursued other options much earlier. Makiah helped garner more responsiveness when she and our venue coordinator stepped into the picture, but any other attempts to reach that company were fruitless. In the end, things worked out fine, but we did not have any guarantee that we would have any tableware or furnishings at our wedding until two weeks before.

Cheryl’s did an amazing job of catering our wedding. The wedding was out in Hood River but we heard from a few different people involved in planning our wedding that Cheryl’s was a popular choice, even with the drive out from Portland. We looked over a few of the options and came away impressed by the reputation, the options, and the professionalism Cheryl’s offered, so we ended up choosing them and we can safely say we made a great choice! From the moment we hired them, they were on top of all of our requests. They set up a really nice tasting at the restaurant after hours for us where we could speak to the chef about the different options and get his thoughts directly. He asked about our likes and about our guests and gave some helpful feedback to help us narrow down our choices and pick the right passed apps and main courses for our wedding. Not to mention the food itself was far better than we even expected! In the weeks leading up to the wedding, our point person, Makiah, was incredibly responsive and helpful. We had some last minute alterations due to food sensitivities of a couple of guests, and she was very quickly and simply able to get us some adjustments and options that would work for each guest. Her attention to detail and responsiveness made us feel very confident and assured as we approached our day. On the day of, Cheryl’s was very professional- they worked with our venue to get set up and prepare the meals, brought everything out on schedule without being distracting, and collected and cleared just as smoothly. We only interacted with the team briefly on our wedding day to thank them for doing such a great job and to meet Makiah in person (which we only hadn’t done already because we don’t live in the area), and aside from that, they were fully self-sufficient and behind the scenes which is what you want on your wedding day! They provided a great experience for us and our guests and we can’t recommend them enough to cater your wedding. If nothing else, stop in for brunch at their restaurant in Portland!

We used Cheryl's As Good As It Gets catering for our wedding and WOW the food was incredible! Additionally, all the staff we worked with (from initial emailing through the event) were awesome! Everyone was helpful, professional, and prompt. We highly recommend them for any event needs, and of course for brunch!

I highly recommend AGAIG / Cheryl's on 12th as a wedding caterer. Their food is way above average for wedding catering in terms of flavor and quality. We had buffet style service, and all of the food was delicious. I don't know that I have ever had buffet food where the chicken didn't get overly dry, or roasted vegetables somehow less palatable, but Cheryl's managed to keep the chicken tender and the roasted potatoes oven-fresh. We also had stuffed artichokes as hors d'oeuvres, and I have been crazing them since the wedding. Amazing! They also coordinated with our linen/silverware rentals, which was an immense help. All in all, I was very impressed.

Easy to work with and wonderful food and staff! Lots of good reviews from our guests as well. Even with a hiccup they made it right and I have no complaints! Definitely recommend.

One of the top comments we got from our wedding guests was about how good the food was! The whole process of working with Cheryl's was phenomenal. The tasting went very well and they were so sweet even when we go the time wrong and were half an hour late. The food on wedding day was fabulous. We did plated meals and the service was great! Favorites included the butternut squash ravioli and the mushroom risotto. They had a good sized menu with many different options and were very reasonably priced. They were able to provide bartenders while we supplied the alcohol. Definitely would recommend and use in the future if a need arises!

We could not have had a better experience working with Cheryl’s As Good As It Gets Catering while planning our wedding. Evelyn and the rest of the team was super helpful and responsive to all our needs and questions. We received a complimentary tasting which really helped us nail down our meal choices. On the actual wedding day, me and the groom ate our entire plates (which says a lot based on how busy we were) and we heard from numerous guests how amazing the food was. My only regret was not getting more leftovers.

Evelyn was super helpful during the planning process and patient with me and my millions of questions. I appreciated their willingness to do a breakfast dinner buffet instead of a traditional wedding dinner and got exactly what we wanted! The staff were very helpful working on a few minor unexpected details at the last minute and the servings were plentiful! (lots of leftovers to share with friends)

One of the most common comments I heard the day after my wedding was “your caterers were so amazing”! From the early stages of planning all the way to the end of our wedding day, Evelyn and her team from Cheryls were AMAZING. I didn’t have to think about a single thing on the day. They just stepped in and made sure everything went perfectly. The food display was STUNNING and dirty dishes were never seen - they were instantly picked up and taken away. Their staff is so so so kind and attentive. I will honestly miss my weekly emails with Evelyn haha! Y’all are the sweetest bunch. Thank you for making my day even better than I dreamed.

We reached out to quite a few caterers for our wedding but As Good As It Gets stood out prominently because they were prompt, detailed, and made the process so easy! In the months after we selected them, we had absolutely no issue with getting questions answered, coordinating details, and planning every phase of our wedding catering. Our first tasting at Cheryl's was exceptional. We had asked if they were able to be flexible with their offerings and incorporate a few traditional Nigerian dishes, and Cheryl's absolutely nailed it. We had sent over recipes and the team worked diligently to get the right flavors and textures and we were able to provide feedback that was very well received. The day of the wedding, food blew our socks off! Cheryl's delivered in a big way. Our non-African guests were in love with the flavors and depths to the food, and the African guests were pleased that our food was reproduced so well in Portland Oregon! We had such an easy and fun time working with Evelyn and Javier on the day. We would highly highly recommend As Good As It Gets catering for your wedding.

We booked Cheryl's on 12th for our wedding in October 2019 and they were wonderful from the very beginning of our communications with them! It was so easy to schedule a tasting and get a full understanding of how the whole catering process works! We left our tasting with leftovers that we could munch on the rest of the day and we got fast responses from their catering team when we reached out to finalize a booking. During our tasting I believe we sat with the owners and they were very accommodating to our needs for the type of venue and style of wedding we were having. We are so grateful for the little touches they added to make our day that much more special! During our special day, Mckayla was our point of contact and she was AMAZING. She was so attentive to us. She was sure to get us plates to put on our sweetheart table and she got us plates for our bridal suite for immediately after the ceremony to ensure we got to eat that day! When we finally did sit down during the dinner portion of our wedding, she got our drinks and made sure we had refills of everything we needed. At the end of the night she boxed up "doggy bags" for us to take home to our Airbnb and also boxed up our cake! I was so blown away by her attentiveness, attention to detail, and her overall kindness and professionalism. As for the other wait staff, I didn't even notice they were there. They kept the event going and the tables stocked and I think that's all I could have asked for from them! What an amazing experience working with Cheryl's! I couldn't have asked for a better time.

Our whole experience with them -- from the food tasting to the process of figuring out the menu to the actual wedding -- was positive. They were very professional, responsive, flexible, and the food was great. I would highly recommend them.

Cheryl's (As Good As It Gets) has some of the best staff. Our event manager, Evelyn, and everyone who served at our wedding were friendly and professional. We sent so many emails to Evelyn and she responded quickly and never made us feel like we were being demanding (even if we thought we were). They didn't charge us a corkage or cake cutting fee and were happy to accommodate our guests' dietary requests. Our guests continue to rave about the food; even the leftovers were tasty! We tasted with two other caterers, and Cheryl's had the best customer service and best tasting food with a variety of seasonal and local dishes. We continue to recommend Cheryl's to anyone who needs a caterer.

I had As Good As It Gets Cater my wedding and it was just absolutely fabulous. We did heavy appetizers and they estimated numbers perfectly. We even had some leftovers that they boxed up and we've been munching on them. Evelyn and her team were wonderful to work with and so professional. We had them do the food, bartending and our beautiful wedding cake and desserts and it was all fantastic! Bartender made the best mojitos for us! I could go on and on! 5 stars!!!!

Although they were spot-on and fantastic on the day of the event, there were countless errors made and miscommunications leading up to the day of our wedding. One of the biggest miscommunications was not understanding that Cheryl's does not include event rentals such as linens and silverware in the price of their quote. The rentals were an additional $2,000! Be sure to clarify this with them if you use Cheryl's.

Where to start - from the beginning Cheryl's was amazing. We got to sit down personally with Cheryl and Ed and they tasted us through SO much food. They even sent us home with leftovers that just kept getting better. Throughout the planning process, Paulina was a rock star getting everything organized, even things we hadn't thought of and making sure we had everything we need. On the day of, they also managed to flip the space and get the salads out within our quick 1 hour cocktail hour. The room looked amazing and the food was JUST as good as when we did our tasting with them. They also sent us home with boxes at the end of the night to make sure we got enough food :) HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! I love how Cheryl's is a family business. Every time my husband and I went to the restaurant one of the owners was there helping to serve and bus for their guests. We had Paulina as our contact and she could not have been more kind and helpful. She was so flexible and really made sure that we had the best possible experience. She helped with everything including the day of time line. The food was spectacular and they even provided vegan and vegetarian options with no extra charge. Additionally their alcohol policy really helped us save a significant amount of money. Cheryl's was absolutely amazing.

I can't praise Cheryl's enough! From our first initial inquiry through the wedding day itself, they were incredibly helpful, and made it easy to plan a wedding from far away!

We loved working with Cheryls on 12th for our catering. In fact, Cheryls on 12th was the first catering place that we had a tasting at and we loved it so much that we booked it that day. Not only is the food amazing but the personalized care we received there was amazing. Deblin was so friendly and made us feel so taken care of. At our tasting, the owner even came up to our table and personally delivered some of their signature meals for us to try. We felt like family and instantly knew that we wanted to do business with them. On our wedding, we only heard great things about the food and I'm so happy our guests were pleased. There appeared to be enough food for everyone and even some leftovers for us to take home. I loved their customized care. It was also so nice to be able to coordinate our rentals through them and have them do much of the communication with the rental company. They continually updated our invoice based on changes we made along the way and never made us feel like there was ever an inconvenience. After the wedding, we found out that there was some difficulty with the beer but it sounds like everything was resolved as quickly as they could. I would definitely recommend their business for catering, or even going to get some food at their restaurant!

The food was so amazing we didn't have leftovers. Seriously, my husband and I didn't even get appetizers on our day because they were gone before we got back from photos. We had an extra 10 portions for the buffet because we ended up with fewer guests than originally anticipated, but we still did not have leftovers from the buffet either! Every guest raved about the food. The chicken was falling off the bone because it was deliciously moist, and the from scratch butternut squash raviolis were perfectly cooked, al dente! Deblin was great to work with as well; when we had to change the order to a pick up since we moved our venue, she made the transition simple and stress free. I highly recommend them for your food needs. The only thing I noticed was the hiring of their servers/bartenders were expensive compared to using the venue's team. If your venue has their own servers and are full service, I would recommend using them over the catering team. Other than that, everything is great!

Delicious food, flexible in working within our budget, and very helpful with set-up and tear down. They provided our rehearsal dinner and reception food. Excellent!

We were so happy with Cheryl's on 12th & As Good As It Gets Catering! Their customer service, attention to detail and the food were phenomenal! Everything was above and beyond than what we expected. Paulina was FANTASTIC. We received so many compliments on the food and all servers.

The staff at Cheryl's on 12th did the most amazing job from the day we first started the planning to the end of the wedding night! They were caring, helpful, professional and worth every penny!! Ourselves and our family did absolutely nothing for the whole wedding day! They took care of everything and did a fantastic job!!

I was so pleased when I found this catering company, they had such great prices and a package that was perfect for our budget. We were able to customize what we needed (and didn't need) and the coordinator, Codi, was such a pleasure to work with. She made all of the details, and even scheduled a site visit to go over all of the plans a few weeks ahead of the wedding. She even showed up early to help us with the set up, which was not even part of the contract! The food was DELICIOUS and everything went exactly as planned. I loved how we could use our own alcohol, and they provided the licensed servers and the best part was NO CORKAGE FEES! Overall we spent about $28 a head, which included everything from plates, glasses, dinnerware, napkins, gratuity, and even some linens for the tables. They are a great value if you are on a budget and the food was fantastic! Loved them :)

We just got salads from these wonderful people, but not only were they delicious, cost effective and beautiful...but we happened to pick them up the day of the Gay Pride Parade...shutting down all of Burnside and surrounding streets. They took the time to help us carry all of our salads 6 blocks to our car! We managed to stay around $200 with salads for 3 different salads for 160 people.

We had a wedding of 150, open bar, buffet style dinner. This caterer was so helpful, they rented the dishes for us at cost, provided the bartenders, servers, took the trash away at the end of the night, and moved the tables between ceremony and reception! All for around $3000! Fantastic value!
