I’ve been DJ for over 40 years and have perfected my craft to meet the needs of my clients each time I MC a wedding reception. In our initial meeting went over with your daughter and her fiancée about the music they preferred they specifically said they wanted lots of Sinatra, Michael Bublé and some other artists sprinkled in for cocktail dinner. I was supposed to start at 6 pm but as guests arrived at Portage a 1/2 hour early, I started playing numerous Sinatra songs, in line with what they requested. After playing that for about an hour I proceeded to play Escape “the Pina Colada Song” which gets lots of people singing along and I was immediately reminded by you, saying “my daughter doesn’t want this”. Yes, she wanted mainly lots of Sinatra and Michael Bublé, as I said there was more on there than Frank Sinatra, I immediately went back to Sinatra for the rest of cocktail/dinner. I will admit the ballroom at portage country club is rather loud with no carpeting and high ceilings it has always had its acoustical issues, but I was never told the music was too loud, by you or any other guest. And I always walk in front of my speakers and around the room to make sure the music level is at an appropriate level which guests can talk over without too much trouble. With nearly 200 guests speaking the room gets loud on its own even without music. Your daughter and her husband wanted to be introduced into the venue during cocktail hour, I proceeded to line them up, go over pronunciations and bring them into the venue so they could enjoy everyone’s company. The introduction went off without a hitch and everyone was aware that the bridal party and the bride and groom were entering the room. Knowing that most of my clients at portage like the setup because people who want to talk and just visit can sit in the back rooms and catch up while those that want to dance can come out to the ballroom and dance where the music tends to be louder. I used the country clubs sound system during the toasts so everyone could hear the toasts as I always do. After dinner had concluded I checked with the bride and groom and asked if they were ready to get things going. I made two loud announcements asking guest to come out to the dance floor area for the bride and grooms first dance and proceeded to play their first dance with approximately 60-75% of their guests watching. Sometimes parents get into a deep conversation and miss an occasional announcement, so I make sure to always announce anything whether it be the cake cutting or father daughter dance twice (so no-one misses it). What do you mean I started playing dance music before your daughter and her husband opened the dance floor, I simply played what is called tweeter music which is transitional music that bridges the gap from dinner music to dance music to get guests ready for dancing. I’ve done that every weekend for decades and it’s never been an issue. As far as playing 100% of the songs on your song sheet, you’re probably correct as I was being asked by guests to play additional Greek Dance songs like Zorba the Greek that were very special to the Horattas guests (grooms’ family), along with several other songs. Yes, I did give out classy expensive tinsel wands that I’ve given out for years and guests take them home and spend hours on the dance floor with, because I’ve gotten such positive feedback from them and every photographer sends me pictures with the guests and these tinsel wands, it enhances the dancing experience. You had a lot of kids present at the reception and as one who not only wants to entertain the bride and grooms’ friends, parents’ friends, grandparents etc., I want to keep the kids entertained as well. I’m sorry my effort in entertaining the small kids seemed tacky or classless in your eyes, I’ve never once had a client be upset for me bring extra items to their receptions and I’m sorry they didn’t color coordinate with your theme! Always wanting to make sure my bride and groom and their parents are happy I come up numerous times throughout the night asking if everything is wonderful and if you need anything? When I approached you and asked you that did you tell me anything, you nodded your head as if everything was good, did you not! Knowing guests and how they react to my music, the guests that were there that wanted to have fun had a tremendous time by the smiles on their faces and those that chose to stay seated at their tables and talk, I’m sure they had a great time as well.
