Owned and operated by Ellen Goldberg in Middleburg, VA, Briar Patch Bed & Breakfast offers couples a warm and historic location for hosting both intimate and large-scale weddings. Located on 47 acres with mountain views about an hour outside Washington DC, Ellen’s inn is near wineries & craft breweries, parks, and horse farms. Boasting a colonial feel, Ellen’s bed & breakfast lets couples retreat into a storybook for their special day.
Making a career change, Ellen purchased a former dairy farm and transformed it into an inviting b&b and venue location. Over 15 years later she is still welcoming guests and hosting events on this historic farm built around 1805. The location includes a main house with eight bedrooms, a one-bedroom cottage, and a modern 3-bedroom "chicken coop" for hosting a total of about 25 overnight guests. The event space is large enough for up to 200 guests, but provides a quaint atmosphere.
Briar Patch, located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains with idyllic wood fences and neighing horses as neighbors, grants couples a refuge. To host nuptial celebrations, the inn has 3 outdoor locations with great views for your ceremony and the Fox Den building for up to 200 guests, providing a relaxed and open space with colonial-style embellishments for a storied feel. The vast lawns dotted with old trees paint a picture of provincial romance, instilling the location with rustic charm.
In addition to hosting events, Briar Patch provides accommodations, serving as a getaway for the entire wedding. They offer event coordination services and staff to alleviate some wedding-related stress. To complete the evening, Ellen offers catering, flower, and music packages through partnered vendors, doing the research for couples beforehand. A bonus: her inn is available during certain holidays for those planning an extra special wedding.

When my husband and I visited Briar Patch, we immediately knew we wanted to get married there. The B&B is beautifully situated in the hills and offers a lot of options for outdoor or indoor ceremonies. The reception hall was beautiful, and the rooms were lovely and cozy. Dan and Ellen are such genuinely kind people and took the time to answer our questions. For a similar price that we could have rented a ballroom at a country club for a day, we got to rent out the full property for two days, which was perfect for out of town guests and the bridal party. Having the rehearsal onsite, then going to bed and waking up already on the property removed so much stress from the wedding day itself. Also the flexibility of choosing our own caterer and being able to provide our own alcohol (without any additional fees) saved us so much money compared to other venues. The reception hall is so beautiful you hardly need to add extra decorations. Throughout the planning process Dan and Ellen were very communicative and accommodating with our requests and site visits before the wedding. We originally planned to have our ceremony on the hilltop, but changed our minds the day before due to the forecast heat and humidity. The change was easily made and there were no issues from the Briar Patch side on changing the plans. All our guests commented on how beautiful the venue was, and our out of town guests slept well and enjoyed their stay. I would highly recommend a Briar Patch wedding.

Honestly this venue is amazing. We fell in love with the beauty and the ambiance of the location and loved we could host family and friends on site. The area around is a quaint town with lots of vineyards and other leisurely activities. The owners are kind people that worked with us to make sure everything was perfect! The breakfast was amazing home cooked food and the coffee exactly what we needed the day after. The rules on music were very reasonable, the kitchen for catering a great space to store any items prepped for it, and the bathrooms were to die for. I'd come back again for the giant tub in the cottage! Dan in particular was a delight. He made breakfast for us including French toast and was very accommodating. Brownie the dog was a wonderful host as well, very sweet. Everyone that attended said they thought our venue was the best. I think a few may plan on coming back for a couples trip!

We had an amazing experience here at an affordable price. Leading up to the wedding, Dan and Ellen communicated with us regularly to make sure all our details and vendors were set up well for their venue, and they had experienced advice to offer. We had intended for our wedding to be at their hilltop ceremony site, but because of rain we had a same-day change to bring the ceremony into the Fox Den building where the reception was held, and everything still looked amazing. The venue has several rooms between a few different buildings on site to accommodate about 30 guests, and all of them are very cozy. We highly recommend visiting this venue to check out all the great things they offer, and to chat with Dan and Ellen who are awesome people and hosts!

Overall, we were happy with our wedding at Briar Patch. I’m going to give an honest review about our experience below with both good things and some things to consider. Even with some things not going perfectly, we feel that we would choose this venue again if we had the choice.
We were very happy with:
1. The ability to have a wedding weekend here for a relatively low price, Friday 12pm to Sunday at 12pm was ours with the ability to have our rehearsal, welcome dinner, wedding ceremony, wedding reception, and breakfast on Sunday all at the same place but in different spaces onsite. This was very convenient and our entire wedding party could stay onsite with us. We enjoyed this. They gave my husband a Veteran’s discount, which we very much appreciated. The property is gorgeous, and we made use at our November wedding of the mountains in the background. The venue is family friendly and my sister didn’t have to worry about my niece roaming around the property. Having everything in one spot was great! This fit our vision of a romantic rural venue that was elegant, but not pretentious, with lovely views.
2. Dan and Ellen were very nice to me and my husband. They brought us breakfast in the cottage on our wedding day so we could have a quiet breakfast together before the day started. That’s what we wanted. The Chef made my mom a special breakfast sandwich to order in the morning. They were accommodating about us bringing in lunch on Friday for the wedding party, snacks on the wedding day, and doing a customized breakfast for us on Sunday and adding bacon, biscuits and gravy, and other things we desired (for an extra but reasonable fee). People did give us compliments on the brunch and said the food was really good - kudos to the staff there. Also, the rooms were ready for us to check in way earlier than 4pm, so that was a really nice surprise when we arrived on Friday. They also let us stay a little later on Sunday since there was not a wedding immediately after us that evening. It allowed us the time we needed to get everything packed up. We appreciated their ability to be flexible.
3. The venue and property were gorgeous on November 2nd. The fall colors were perfect, the horse was on property, we got amazing pictures under the stars, and we loved being able to make use of all of the spaces onsite for our different events. The scenery was really picturesque! The reception hall is perfect for a wedding reception and plenty of space for dancing. The location was close to Dulles for people to fly in and get there easily.
4. The cottage for the couple was fun and the kitchenette was nice. The bathtub was nice, and it was a good space for all of the ladies to get ready in on the day of the wedding, hang out, and have snacks. There was a keurig or similar coffee maker in there, a full sized fridge, a sitting area, and bedroom. The coop was where we put the moms and it was the nicest place on property. I don’t regret giving it to them for a second and we are happy they got their own bathrooms and were comfortable. It has its own kitchenette as well and an entire suite with a living room. They were very happy with the weekend and their experience.
5. On Friday night, we had a country western party themed welcome party and dinner in the space outside of the ballroom. We had adequate space to turn that space into a dance floor (near the fireplace) and set up food/drinks and tables for 50 in that space. Dan recommended Hammerdown BBQ, which is very nearby. We had people raving about the BBQ, saying it was the best cornbread they had ever had, and the best brisket. We even had relatives from Texas who complimented the BBQ. That was a great recommendation from the venue and helped make the night great.
Things that could have been improved:
1. The rooms are quirky and there are insects and rodents around. There was a mouse in the cottage, there were stink bugs around, and there were some wasps around, including one that scared my 6-year old niece and one that got on the hair dresser’s hand while doing hair inside. Nobody was hurt or got stung, but there are some critters around. If that is a deal breaker, than this may not be the place for you. It is rustic! That's part of the charm and also comes with some things that are unavoidable.
2. There are not bathrooms in all of the rooms and for some people in our wedding party, that was an issue. We tried to give the people who had issues with it priority and the Moms got priority too. Overall, I think people made it work, but were not used to having to share a bathroom and shower space with another person or couple. It would be nice to have a TV in the cottage bedroom.
3. There was some lack in communication between the owners and our wedding coordinators and caterer. At one point it almost led to an altercation. Most of the issues were able to be straightened out, but unfortunately a few unexpected things happened because of the lack in communication. The room where we were going to have the rehearsal dinner was already set up for the wedding on Friday, so we had to reset it for the dinner. It wasn’t really a problem for us, though. We had enough people to help. There was a mixup on where the guys were going to get ready and where the food would be. We just had them put it in the kitchen area and the guys got ready independently in their rooms. We are easy going, so while not ideal, it didn’t make or break the day. I think there was also a misunderstanding about certain venue items being needed at specific locations. It turned out fine in the end.
4. There were some issues where our coordinators couldn’t find Dan, Ellen, or staff on the day of the wedding when they needed them. This caused us to not be able to use the van to be transported up the hill to our wedding ceremony site. We walked up the hill, which caused us to be seen before the ceremony by guests who had arrived early and were sitting in their parked cars. They saw us and started following us up to the ceremony site early, even though we were not finished with pictures. Our coordinators had to tell them to go back and wait.
5. This is not the fault of Briar Patch, but they had recommended the Dulles South Hampton Dulles Inn for our guests who were not staying onsite with us. They told us that the hotel would offer a free shuttle for our guests. The Hampton Inn was not upfront about this with us and after we had booked our room block and advertised the location to guests, they told us that they only offer the shuttle one day (so we could pick friday, saturday, or sunday) which wasn’t great since we had three events that weekend. They also told us we needed at least 10 reservations to be booked before they would allow us to use the shuttle, and it would only seat 12 people. If you do the math, that means you might have 10 reservations and 20 people, but not all can ride the shuttle. In the end, we decided not to even use the shuttle because it didn’t make sense and wouldn’t be available for all the events. We asked people to contact us ahead of time if they would need rides so we could arrange carpools ahead of time with others staying at that hotel. We also let people know in the invitations that they could drive to Briar Patch and park there or use Uber/Lyft if they didn’t want to drive or carpool. We picked this hotel on the recommendation of Briar Patch and mostly because we thought we would get the free shuttle, and it’s really the issue of the Hampton Inn, but had we known sooner from Hampton that it was not the case, we would have gone with a different hotel. They were also really difficult to communicate with about the room block early on. I would recommend you go with another hotel. I'm posting this part more for awareness than anything else.
6. Some spots around the venue are not easily handicap accessible and there are not bathrooms at every site. This is just something to keep in mind if you have people who have accessibility needs or older guests.
Overall, we are satisfied with our choice to go with Briar Patch and we got quite a few comments from our guests who were wowed by how the place transformed into an elegant space on our wedding day from being a country/western party the night before (our rehearsal dinner). It was a great choice and we have many happy memories and beautiful pictures from that day. For a wedding weekend near the DC area, you can’t beat the value and beauty of this venue!

at Briar Patch. And thank you for pointing out all the good things about your wedding with us, as well as the areas for improvement. We take all feedback to heart and will work on the areas to improve that we have control over that you mentioned. We very much enjoyed hosting you, your family, and friends for your wedding weekend. We were especially pleased that you liked the custom brunch for 45 people on Sunday morning that we were able to provide for our first time doing so.

We recently had our wedding at the Briar Patch and it was a beautiful day and an overall excellent experience working with them. They were very responsive and helpful with our planning. We ended up booking the entire site for the weekend to host family and friends from out of town. They helped us find a caterer and plan the whole event. Everything was just easy working with them. They were flexible, up front with costs, and just easy to work with. We highly recommend the Briar Patch for your event!

Our wedding was a beautiful experience working with the family that owns the venue. Their assistance and help and guidance was so appreciated. We had a beautiful four days day including private time with our family, rehearsal dinner and wedding all at one venue. The briar patch bed and breakfast is a GEM. Dan and Ellen are wonderful to work with and treat you like family. They are very flexible and work with you to provide a memorable experience. The fact that the wedding party and immediate family can stay on the grounds for the entire weekend made it even more special. And we got a delicious breakfast every morning for the cherry on top. It was also nice to use some of the preferred vendors - Helga’s caterers had a fabulous staff and the food was out of this world! DJ Randy was phenomenal and kept the party going. I highly recommend this venue for any wedding or special occasion

Dan and Ellen were a dream to work with! They say “your wedding, your way” and they really mean it. They gave us all the information we needed in advance, and gave clear guidelines of when to have things completed and it helped us keep our stress levels way lower. Everything was set up how we asked and they even threw in an extra night for me and my bridesmaids to stay in the cottage before the wedding. We loved everything about our experience with The Briar Patch and can’t recommend it enough as a wedding venue!

My wife and I had such a wonderful time getting married here back in October 2023! Dan was so welcoming and friendly to all of our guests and ensured that we were taken care of on all fronts. The venue was just what we were looking for - a rustic, country-style home with immaculate views of the mountains and surrounding area. The breakfasts we had in the morning were incredibly nostalgic of the breakfasts I had growing up in the countryside of central Virginia. If you’re looking for a country-style venue in the heart of Virginia’s countryside, Briar Patch is the place for you!

I don’t have adequate words to describe how truly disappointing our experience at Briar Patch was. Luckily, we had other amazing vendors who made our wedding amazing & compensated for the extremely poor quality of the venue we paid for. The reception space is fine but otherwise all photos you see online are dated & inaccurate. For starters, the place is wildly unclean and not kept up with whatsoever. The owners are rude & snarky when you ask for anything at all. We asked that handprints be cleaned off of dirty windows in the ceremony space & was then called OCD by the owner (see emails below for some horrifying responses from the owners). We quickly realized that the windows were the least of our problems when we went through or guestrooms the week of the wedding, and found that there was a stink bug infestation. There were so many stink bugs that when my little sister tried to use the iron in a closet, they crawled out of the iron. Then, another wedding party guest opened up a towel to shower, and five stink bugs, fell out and crawled on her legs. In the hill house, every single drawer and cabinet had mouse poop in it. There was a mouse nest in the kitchen cabinet. My mom and I cleaned mice poop out of that spot of the venue for 2 hours. Every room, bathroom, and reception space on the property is extremely filthy. When I confronted the owner about the stink bug, infestation and asked for help to clean them up, he bluntly said “it’s called a vacuum.” There was zero cleaning done prior to our arrival with our guests, so my mother & I spent 3 days leading up to the wedding scrubbing the walls of the reception hall, vacuuming up 400+ stink bugs, spraying a stink bug deterrent on the windows of the guest houses, and replacing shower curtains that were covered in pink mold. These are things the owners should have taken care of themselves. Particularly the stink bug infestation — to reiterate how bad this problem was, we had to clean behind every picture frame hung on the walls of the main house because there were 20+ bugs behind each one. Dan, married to owner Ellen, was on site all weekend and couldn’t be bothered to clean up the rotten food that he left in the kitchen sink. This is a communal space for wedding party to get ready and eat breakfasts together, but nobody wanted to be in the space because there were bugs flying around the dirty sink and the smell was horrendous. Dan’s desk is absolutely filthy and disheveled, conveniently it’s located right where guests walk in through to get to their rooms. This should’ve been our first red flag of just how messy and gross this place would be. Dan also showed up in our reception after being rude to my mother and other wedding party members all weekend, and makes himself a plate. It’s convenient that he can come eat free food off us after he did NOTHING to prepare his disgusting venue for the weekend and treated his customers horribly (again, see emails below). You will be treated poorly & ridiculed for asking for basic cleanliness if you book here. Run away like your hair’s on fire. I will not be recommending this spot to anyone and in fact plan on warning everyone we know with upcoming weddings to stay far away from Briar Patch. Aside from the scenic views, this place is a joke of a venue and is a biohazard that should be closed down asap. Lastly, I hope Dan & Ellen take care of the horses that are dilapidated and have burs stuck all over them.

Briar Patch was the perfect venue for our wedding. We wanted somewhere we could stay on the property that would also provide beautiful scenery for pictures, and we couldn’t have asked for anything better. The owners Dan and Ellen were so easy to work with and were always quick to respond to emails. While Dan and Ellen were out of town the weekend of our wedding, Dan’s brother, Doron, stepped in and was absolutely wonderful. He made us a delicious breakfast both Saturday and Sunday, always offered to help with setup and takedown, and was all around a very genuine and sweet guy. His adorable dog, Brownie, followed him everywhere and even stopped by the reception and totally stole the show! We loved having them both around and we are so glad we chose Briar Patch for our wedding. The pictures we have are gorgeous, and those of us who stayed on the property slept well in very quaint bedrooms. We’re definitely planning on spending the weekend there sometime to celebrate a future anniversary!

Briar Patch was the perfect place for our early August wedding. We secured the venue and planned our wedding in about 3.5 months due to a terminal illness in the family, and Ellen & Dan were so accommodating and helpful in getting everything done in such a short amount of time! They have been in this business a long time and really know their stuff. We opted to rent out the entire property for the whole weekend, which was an excellent choice for us. This allowed us to have all of our friends onsite the whole weekend, which was so fun. Since it was summer, we took full advantage of the pool for the afterparty. Dan makes a homemade breakfast each morning for folks staying onsite, which is delicious! Our outdoor ceremony spot under the arch was beautiful and the reception area was perfect for our needs. Lots of beautiful sunset photos on the outdoor patio! Also, can't recommend their vendors on their recommendations list enough! We got our caterer and DJ from their list and both were outstanding.

We had a wonderful time having our wedding at the Briar Patch. We were originally scheduled to have it during the pandemic and Dan and Ellen were very accommodating in allowing us to push it back as needed. It was so nice to have the entire wedding party, their significant others, and our immediate families on site for the entire weekend - it really allowed us to maximize our time spent with them all. Even though the weather ended up being poor that weekend, the indoor ceremony space was still perfect. The bridal cottage easily fit 12 people for getting ready.

atch after being rescheduled multiple times, which we were happy to do. The way you describe your experience spending the entire weekend surrounded by your family & friends is exactly why most of our wedding couples take over exclusive use of our property for a weekend wedding. And the fact that our event building is large & nice enough to accommodate doing everything inside because of the weather (as happened for your wedding) is a plus. We wish you the best in your married life together.

If you are looking for a beautiful, relaxed wedding with a homey and rustic feel - this is the place for you.
Briar Patch itself is quite beautiful - our photos are terrific. We loved being on-site for the whole weekend, surrounded by family and friends staying on-site. It's also incredibly convenient to Dulles, allowing friends and family to fly in from all over and stay close to the airport.
Finally, Dan and Ellen are very generous and flexible. We ended up coming in early on Thursday so that we could have all of Friday to set up for the wedding and they didn't rush us out on Sunday. They also provided many recommendations for other vendors and they didn't steer us wrong.

They were an incredible venue, and they gave us a lot of flexibility to get everything ready. We stayed on the property with our wedding parties and it made the weekend a lot of fun/ easy to set up. It is also absolutely beautiful in the fall!
There was only one staff member working at Briar Patch the entire weekend, so make sure you have your own people to help you set up and that you have a clear plan in place before you arrive. Their laid back venue really allowed us to make the weekend a lot of fun, and we were able to build our own vision.

Briar Patch will always be such a special place to us because we not only had an amazing wedding but a total weekend takeover. Our entire family and bridal party stayed on site. Aside from the weekend rental, we ultimately decided to go with BP because the owners (Dan & Ellen) along with the venue itself had such a relaxed and flexible vibe which was exactly what we wanted for our weekend. Dan and Ellen were so easy to work with throughout the whole process and it was so fun getting to know them. They even brought our family fresh grown tomatoes from their garden during our dinner! Briar Patch is a secluded venue, with lots of space but still has the perks of being close to the cute little town of Middleburg and Dulles airport for anyone traveling long distances. We were able to arrive mid day Thursday and just hangout, get everything ready until Sunday late afternoon. Santiago was amazing - he helped set everything up and always had a smile on his face, willing to lift, carry, adjust anything we wanted. It was truly a beautiful weekend and we used the entire site to our advantage - all the houses, upper hill for ceremony site, reception hall, the pool for our after party etc. If you want an authentic, relaxed and beautiful wedding - BP is your place!

Chloe & Mitchell: Thanks for all the kudos about Briar Patch, Dan & me (Ellen) the owners,...
and our handyman Santiago. The way you describe us & Briar Patch – using such words as flexible, relaxed, authentic, beautiful – is exactly the atmosphere we hope to achieve for our wedding couples.

My husband and I just had our wedding here (July 2022), and it was a great experience! We loved having our whole wedding party on site for the weekend, especially for the night before the wedding when we had a mini pool party. The reception space was beautiful! There are many spots to have the wedding ceremony, but the oak tree in front of the bed and breakfast is a great outdoor option for those who may have guests with mobility issues. We would definitely recommend this venue to others!

Amazing venue, everyone loved it!
The fact that you can have the entire property reserved for your party for the entire weekend is so ideal. You can do your rehearsal there and prep the day before, have your wedding, and go to bed on site after having your after party and enjoying the sweet hot tub, then clean up the next morning before leaving. Having done a lot of the setup ourselves I cant imagine how it would have worked out so smoothly any other way.
A bunch of our friends and family also got to stay on site both nights and everyone loved it. The farm houses are rustic for sure, which I think most people found to be a positive feature (but tall people watch your heads in the main house).
There are great spots for the ceremony, the main hall is fantastic, there is a pool (though it was a little too cold for us at the time), hot tub, and fire pits everywhere.
Definitely highly recommend

u describe, for providing plenty of time to enjoy the property and your family & friends. Glad you got to take advance of all we have to offer, including our pool & hot tub, fire pits, outdoor sites for the ceremony & cocktails, indoor event building for up to 200 people, and our bedrooms in 4 buildings. And you are right that tall people need to watch their heads in our 1800s main house!

We drove 1.5 hrs, had a confirmed appointment to view the place and the owner didn’t show. We walked the property and went in all the spaces ourselves. The main hall needed to be cleaned. And when we finally got in touch with the owner, she had many excuses and didn’t want a negative review.

Briar Patch was the perfect venue for us. Ellen and Dan were very accommodating in working with us. We had to reschedule our wedding due to the pandemic and they graciously offered to let us use the space for a small ceremony on our original date. We toured many venues prior to booking with Briar Patch, but decided to book with Briar Patch due to its convenient location (close to Dulles Airport, hotels that offered shuttles for guests to and from the Dulles Airport as well as one complimentary shuttle to the venue), on-site lodging, ability to book the venue for the entire weekend, and beautiful indoor and outdoor event space. Having the venue available the entire weekend was extremely convenient and a major selling point for us so that we could have our immediate family on-site together. We had a tree planting ceremony and Ellen and Dan kindly let us plant a tree on their site. We booked a day-of coordinator who previously worked at Briar Patch who was critical to pulling all of the details together and making our wedding weekends run smoothly. We stayed in the Chicken Coop, which was a great size for our wedding party to get ready in and take getting ready photos in. We appreciated being able to use the decor such as hurricane lamps, wood slabs, picture frames, easels, projector, etc that Briar Patch already had on site. It was fantastic to have the hot tub on site as well.

I first fell I love with Briarpatch bed and breakfast at my cousins wedding in 2018 so naturally when my husband and I got engaged I knew it was going to be my wedding venue as well! Being able to have my rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, ceremony and reception all in the same spot was so incredibly helpful. Having the opportunity too set up the day before and tear down the day after eliminated so much stress out of the process. When all was said and done it still cost me less then most 8 hour venues.

Briar Patch’s beautiful, peaceful grounds were the perfect setting for a weekend with our loved ones. Though our reception was much smaller than planned (and suddenly outside) due to COVID, Dan and Ellen helped us adjust our plans and made sure we had the reception we wanted. They communicated with us throughout the whole process and the personal touches on the day-of (like a delicious homemade breakfast) made it so special. Briar Patch is an amazing place!

We absolutely loved our wedding at Briar Patch. There is a certain rustic feel to the buildings and interiors, so don't expect anything too modern or elaborate. However, if rustic is your thing then Briar Patch is perfect for you. The scenery is beautiful and it was wonderful to be able to book the whole place from Friday to Sunday to have our friends and family there together for an entire weekend. Dan and Ellen were also extremely accommodating to our needs during the pandemic, allowing us to rearrange twice without any fuss at all. Overall, Briar Patch was a great place to have our wedding and we loved the weekend we got to spend there.

Dan & Ellen provided not just a wonderful location for our wedding, but their care and attention to detail were exceptional. As it goes with weddings & wedding planning, things went wrong at various points of the buildup - but Dan & Ellen were resolved to assist however and whenever they could. They took a lot of the stress off us leading up to the big day simply for their diligence!
The venue itself has multiple options for locations, depending on your style. The entire site is beautiful with gorgeous backdrops of Virginia countryside. The fact it is a bed & breakfast is an added bonus. As a military family, with friends and relatives dispersed throughout the US, being able to coordinate close friends and family staying ON SITE was another tremendous relief for us and made choosing Briar Patch that much easier. There is plenty of parking for guests that would need to travel, so it was helpful knowing that we didn't need to focus on only a small group that could stay at the B&B.
The one piece of advice I will pass on to any future prospective couples is to make sure you coordinate with the winery next door! We had Darius Rucker's "Wagon Wheel" start blaring in the middle of a prayer and everyone got a good laugh out of the situation. It didn't detract from our wedding at all, but as it happened it was a "duh - should have thought of that" moment for sure :)

Let me start off by saying that the venue has its quirks. It is an old building, and during the pandemic it is clear that the business was hit hard in their ability to staff people to help with upkeep. I say all that just to let you know what to expect. HOWEVER, I could not imagine going with a different venue. Dan is the most wonderful host, and makes the process so easy for his wedding couples. While not necessarily cheap, you're able to book the entire venue for the entire weekend for what it costs at some venues for a 8 hour block of time. Honestly, being able to set things up the day before the wedding took so much stress off of the actual day. I can't imagine the stress levels we would have felt had we had to decorate everything day of. You as the guests are responsible for setting up/tearing down the ceremony site, which we were able to set up the day before. (I recommend Smokin Willys as a caterer as they were able to do the tear down for us included in their price). It is a more rustic feeling venue, and there are a bit more things to do on your own, but it is 100% worth it. We could not have imagined a more perfect day, and Dan and Ellen were a huge part of that! They aren't trying to nickel and dime you, they are open and honest with what they can do to help, and will work tirelessly to make sure your wedding goes off as planned. They are a small team, but they care so deeply about their couples. At the very least tour their facilities and see what they have to offer. You won't regret holding your wedding with them (even if your parents are a bit skeptical of the property).

My husband and I did a mini-moon at Briar Patch in the cottage. The setting is nice, the hottub was fantastic, the owner's husband is a great cook and personable. The cat is not people friendly. The impacts of the pandemic are visible.
We arrived just after 5 for a post-4pm check-in. After waiting for about 10 minutes, calling 4 numbers and finally finding someone we were told that the cottage wasn't ready & he needed to finish the wedding tour first. We didn't get into the cottage until after 6 where the bed was not finished being made, the floors were sticky, dirty dishes were in the sink, the bathroom faucet had hair on it, bobby pins were on the side tables,...and a few other less than great items. I think the owners need to have a talk about how much the husband can do and is willing to do for turnover after an event. We found out at breakfast the next morning that Ellen, the owner, had gone to Baltimore after a 90 person event leaving him alone to do clean up, turn over, & 3 wedding tours...clearly too much for him. When we left 2 days later the trash from the wedding was still on the lawn & the sewage alarm was still chirping. Ellen probably should have stayed until Monday to help with turn over OR they should have told us no to a Sunday check-in. Like I said to begin with the husband is a good cook and breakfasts were great, the bed in the cottage was comfortable, and it was a nice quiet reset just not recommended at this time as pandemic adjustments continue.

I would choose Briar patch again and again and again. In fact if I have to host another large event I would do it at the Briar Patch. They are amazing. Dan and Ellen are such gracious hosts and they gave us such amazing deals. They even informed us that we could return for a free stay on our one year anniversary. I loved the fact that we had the entire venue for the whole wedding weekend. It was a nonstop party with my friends and family for three days. Dan and Ellen helped to make this day the best day of my life and not only that but the grounds were gorgeous. My photos were breathtaking!

The Briar Patch is indeed a quaint space to host a humble wedding and management was eager to accommodate us in the beginning. Pros for this venue are the flexibility to bring in outside vendors and/or do a complete DIY wedding (be prepared to remove all your trash OFF the property or hire someone else to do it), have your close friends and family stay on the property with you, pets welcome and your event can serve 20 to 200 people easily. The cons we encountered included one of our guests being over charged for the wrong room and being offered a room that was not available causing unnecessary confusion, my guests staying on the property were disappointed in the lack of care when concerns were lifted to management around a stink bug invasion in the main house and a broken TV in another, and the most concerning was the treatment we received after the wedding was finished when we learned our security deposit would not be refunded due to claims management could not corroborate with receipts. If you are a past or future bride that was not offered a complimentary one year anniversary stay, it's because management dubbed you a "PITA or pain in the a**" which was what we were told directly from the owner. You are welcome to enjoy our invitation to stay for your anniversary as we will not be returning to the Briar Patch for their hospitality.

Our wedding was this past October, and my wife and I feel so lucky to have been able to share that day at Briar Patch Bed and Breakfast. During our wedding venue search, we prioritized finding a location that would be able to take advantage of the beautiful Virginia countryside, while also having sufficient indoor space in case of bad weather.
When we toured Briar Patch, so many of our criteria were satisfied and more. We loved the ability to rent out the bed and breakfast for the weekend, and take the time to share the time and space with our closest friends and family without feeling rushed. The two main ceremony locations are both fantastic, but we chose to use the upper hill area as it is a little more secluded and further away from the road. We thankfully ended up being able to have the ceremony outdoors, but Briar Patch’s indoor backup is a beautiful hall that is spacious, well-lit, and also serves as the main dinner area.
Dan, the owner who gave us a tour of the space several times, was very helpful and has an intimate knowledge of how different couples have taken advantage of everything Briar Patch has to offer. One of the great things about Briar Patch is that you have flexibility to use the space however you want, but this can also be daunting if you do not have a clear vision for how you want things to go. Do you want to have outdoor lawn games? Do you want to have your rehearsal dinner on-site? Welcome drinks? These are all options (and ones we chose and are very happy with), but be prepared to handle the extra logistics yourself. If you want a minimal-option wedding-factory style affair, Briar Patch probably isn’t the choice for you.
Briar Patch employees will help with many of the day-of logistics, but I would recommend working with a day-of coordinator to help with a medium-sized wedding as you will likely have multiple vendors, and the space can be quite spread out.
Last but not least, the breakfast provided by the bed and breakfast staff was delicious. It is a pleasant treat to wake up on your wedding day and the day after to be greeted with fresh coffee and quiche.

Briar Patch was truly our ideal wedding venue. For the same price as a one-day event in DC (where we lived), we had the whole B&B to ourselves for the weekend, which allowed us to have lots of quality time with our guests. My husband and I got married on June 29, 2019. From start to finish, the Briar Patch did an amazing job with our wedding. All of my questions, no matter how silly, were immediately answered. We were originally planning on having our wedding outside, but 72 hours prior, the weather forecast spiked and it was projected to be 104 degrees. I ended up changing our wedding to inside and they handled it with ease! Our wedding went off without a hitch and I am so grateful to Ellen and her team for making our wedding day a dream!

I had my July 2019 wedding at Briar Patch and truly was a dream! Ellen and Dan were incredibly helpful throughout the planning process, and are incredibly well connected to the wedding industry in the surrounding areas. All of the recommendations they gave us were fabulous. The venue itself had everything we could have possibly needed. We had our rehearsal dinner by the pool, under the market lighting strung up through the trees with a cook out and music (sound system already set up.) For our wedding, we did an outdoor ceremony under the shade of a magnificent tree that framed our isle perfectly, leading down to the beautiful arch they provided and a backdrop of the rolling hills. For the reception, we went inside and again the facilities had everything we could have possibly needed! The bathrooms were super cute and clean, the main room was brilliant, with plenty of space for everyone plus dancing, and we were able to go out onto the large decks as well. It made for a really magical night! One of the coolest things was having my out of town family stay with us at the venue site at the B&B. It made the weekend so special and gave us all of the time to see everyone. My family and I are all still talking about how incredible the breakfast was that was provided. From start to finish, everything was truly wonderful! If I could go back and do it again, 100 times over I would always pick the Briar Patch.

We got married here in July 2019, and we could not have asked for anything more our of our wedding venue. We toured several sties, but the Briar Patch was the first one we walked away from feeling we needed to book right away. This was because Dan and Ellen made us feel part of the Briar Patch family immediately upon our tour of the venue, instead of making us feel like we were just another wedding on the calendar.
The venue itself it amazing. We wanted an outdoor ceremony, but also needed an indoor option in case of rain or extreme heat. Both indoor and outdoor options are beautiful. Photo opportunities abound. We were lucky and got to have our ceremony outdoors before the rain came in. As soon as it did, we were all safe inside in their beautiful event space enjoying the reception in the AC.
The B&B allowed us to have a wedding weekend instead of just a wedding day. This was was so important for us as my husband's family was coming in from out of town. We needed a home base, and the Briar Patch became that. We hosted our rehearsal dinner on Friday out on the pool deck, got ready in the cottage on property in the morning of the Saturday wedding, and were able to hang out with our guests well into the night of the wedding. The morning after the wedding on Sunday, we were able to enjoy the B&B's breakfast with our family and wedding party who stayed at the inn. You have the flexibility to start the wedding festivities when you want and don't have to fit it all in in the 5-6 hours that other wedding venues give you. You can also choose your own vendors, though they have a recommended list if you need somewhere to start. And, if you do a more DIY approach, you are on property the day before and after so you can set up decorations, food, etc. all in time. Dan and Ellen were extremely responsive through all the planning, quick to get back to me on each email and call. Dan even drove my grandma and the bridal party up to the ceremony location on the hill in his van. We cannot thank Dan and Ellen enough for their hospitality and guidance throughout our planning process. Thank you!

I spent 3 months searching and visiting very venue in northern Virginia. Briar patch was without a doubt, the best for what I was looking for. This venue was out of my dreams! As a bride that was paying for my entire wedding, I was worried that my lower budget would put a damper on my venue. But this was not the case! I had 200 guest plus children. The tables and beautiful chairs that they provide we’re a huge weight off my shoulders. My photographer never ran out of places to take unique photos, the landscape is everything you would want in the dreamy hills of horse country, so it was perfect for my outdoor ceremony. The owner will also allow you to visit, explore and walk through the venue at almost all hours. Which was huge for my scattered head during the planning process! The bed and breakfast atmosphere was very comfortable for our wedding party. Just like being at home! We were able to get ready in a cottage which had plenty of room for my 8 girls (plus moms and friends)
The assistants here were the perfect mix of helpful, present but not controlling or overbearing. So friendly and accommodating. I was a bride that needed to be creative, very budget friendly, allow room for those DIY Pinterest ideas to flow but also wanted the foundation of the venue to be beautiful. And briar patch allowed it all.
I will forever suggest brides to check this place out.

I used Briar Patch for my October 21, 2017 wedding. Looking at wedding venues can be a discouraging task. Many places have really strict rules such as where you could have the wedding, times you’re allowed to use it, and even which vendors you could use. It was daunting trying to juggle which restrictions or accommodations you were or were not okay with. From the moment I arrived at Briar Patch and met the staff, I was blown away by how friendly and accommodating they were to my needs. The owner Ellen is 100% welcoming to her brides and supporting their dream weddings. They have a fantastic wedding package that includes not only housing in their main house but also the venue rental property itself for 3 days, 2 nights. While the sticker price may shock you at first, you balance it out with the fact that you can house much of your bridal party (or other guests), have a ample time to set-up/breakdown decorations, full use of their facilities such as extensive grounds, pool, and hot-tub, and fully furnished house and fully stocked kitchen. The staff is incredibly sweet and attentive, and you are not nitpicked or charged for every add on or request you want. This alone…the feeling of being cared for and treated fairly was one of the main reasons I went with Briar Patch. I felt like their biggest joy was in helping me have a spectacular wedding day and not just another tick on their checklist. The venue space is large, airy, and light. It has a very homey and warm feeling when done up, so it feels very intimate and cozy (yet trust me plenty of space for guests, dance floor, and decorations). I highly recommend this venue if you want a warm and loving reception, with a highly attentive staff, and a beautiful nature filled backdrop. Also, as a side note, I highly recommend hiring their in-house coordinating service. I used them and my day went off without a hitch with Ali as my day-of coordinator!
