Our son’s rehearsal dinner (97 guests) was held at Circa 3 weeks ago.
Positives - Circa 1903 is a beautiful and versatile venue. It was located across the street from the church ...where the wedding was to be held, so logistics were simple. We live 6 hours away, therefore it was important we find a place that could take care of everything for us, so I wouldn’t have to worry. Major and Lauren went out of their way on the day of the event to make sure that we had what we needed, that their staff was prepared, and that the food was delicious. They hit every mark.
Negatives - working with Miss Georgia was difficult at best, and so many of our interactions left a sour taste in my mouth. She is the matriarch of the family and the face of the business. I understand that any business’ goal is to make a profit, but she lacks any flexibility and there seemed to be zero appreciation or recognition that this was a significant investment on our part. Her attitude was, "we are the only venue in town and we know it." Top 3 issues with our $10K, three-hour dinner:
First, communication was very poor. To spend that kind of money and come from out of town for an event I am hosting for 100 people, I expect that my emails will be answered at least within 24-48 hours. Often a week or more went by, and I would have to follow up with emails or texts asking again. Many of my pressing questions did not get answered until within 2 weeks of the event - stressful! When an itemized invoice was finally provided 3 weeks after I asked for it (only 6 days before the event), it contained big errors which caused a flurry of emails and stress the week of the wedding.
For the amount I paid, I was nickeled and dimed to death. Four examples of many: 1) only 8 people chose chicken, but to give them that 3rd choice, we had to pay $3.00 more per person - so 3 X 97 = 291 which made those chicken entrees $65 each. She refused to compromise on this charge. 2) I had to beg for a month for a price on a kids’ meal chicken tenders option. She asked the ages and charged 2 different prices based on the age - $25 and $15. There was no difference in the food quantity. 3) $2.95 per glass of iced tea (water only was served with dinner) and, until I put my foot down, she was going to charge for refills of iced tea. 4) $35 for music to play over the speakers, $35 to use their microphone, $35 to use their screen - when I paid $1600 to walk in the door! I brought my own, but had a mic malfunction as guests were arriving. Georgia stepped in and offered her mic because I was panicked, but of course charged me the $35.
In NONE of these instances would her compromising have been giving me something for nothing. I wasn’t asking for food I didn’t pay for, nor was I asking for anything unreasonable. Even ONE compromise (or simply not charging for the mic) would have signaled to me that she understood & appreciated our significant investment in her business.
Overall, the dinner itself and the experience we had from 7:30 - 10:30 that evening was wonderful and the staff did an amazing job. They are the reason for my 3 star review. All of our guests were very complimentary, and everyone had a great time that evening - that’s what matters. But the amount of stress and frustration that it took to get there was enough that If I had to do it over again, I would use Circa only if this business hires a different event coordinator.
