Coast catered our wedding at Scripps and did an amazing job. Tasty food was a priority for us and they did not disappoint. The food was excellent--many of our guests commented about how good it was and how much they enjoyed it. Their Miso Glazed Sea Bass hors d'oeuvre was absolutely delicious and the mains were great as well--we did the Kurobuta Pork Loin and Pan Roasted Barramundi, along w/ Gnocchi and Roasted Kabocha for vegetarian / vegan options.
Rachel, our coordinator, was awesome to work with; so responsive and helpful and always positive and really nice. Their service on the day of was also great; the staff was highly professional and kind; a lot of our guests were impressed at the synchronized serving as well at each table.
They provided our tables, chairs, silverware, linens, etc. as well and we had no issues--everything looked great.
Overall a highly positive experience and would recommend to anyone doing an event in San Diego.

We were new to the San Diego area when we got engaged, which meant we had no local knowledge of best vendors or caterers. Our wedding planners immediately recommended Coast Catering as the best in the business, and having now worked with them I can confirm they are incredible. Not only is the food amazing, but they are some of the kindest people to work with and the service they provide day of is beyond perfect.
Our first introduction to Coast was at our tasting. The tasting was fun and the food was delicious. We so enjoyed meeting the incredible chef Barry Layne and Chelsea, the Director of Sales who worked with us throughout the wedding planning process. Barry and Chelsea were so kind and thoughtful with us during the whole tasting, answering our questions, letting us try multiple dishes and appetizers, and explaining to us how the process would work during the next year plus that we were planning our wedding. The hardest part of the tasting was deciding among the many delicious options.
As I'm sure many couples can relate to, we have gone to a LOT of weddings during the last few years, and we understand from friends that even the best tasting is not always an indication of how the food will taste day of, when cooked for 150+ guests. Let me be clear: if anything, our food from Coast Catering was even BETTER on the day of the wedding than it was at the tasting, if that's possible. We picked the filet, petaluma chicken, and gnocci for our main dishes, and it was all incredible. We also can't speak highly enough about the arugula salad, which I wish we could eat every day of my life! And the other stars of the show were our passed appetizers: the tuna tacos, sliders, and mac and cheese bites. I could go on and on but to sum it up: it was all incredible, and I'm hoping to get invited to another Coast-catered event soon to eat it all again. A friend messaged us the day after the wedding and said: "I talk a lot about how nobody remembers food from weddings, but this may be an outlier for me."
The only thing that was better than the food itself was Coast's service, which was spectacular. Our wedding planners advised us that a major reason to book with Coast is because they ensure the timing of everything is pristine, but I did not know how true that was with Coast until the day of our wedding. Flow is so important to ensuring your day goes smoothly, and Coast crushed it out of the park for us. The servers were so kind and served meals in sync, a small and wonderful touch that so many of our guests commented on and appreciated. I wouldn't change a thing about our day, and a lot of that is thanks to Coast's excellent execution of the food and service.
And finally (I could go on and on, as you can see), what I appreciated so much was Chelsea's and Coast's attention to my husband and I the day of the wedding. We had appetizers delivered to us by a server at the very start of cocktail hour-- after hearing from tons of friends that at their own weddings, they never got to try the passed apps. We even had EXTRA apps delivered to us during dinner, which we happily gobbled down as we took a moment to spend time together at the sweetheart table, admiring our big day having come together.
Just trust me: book Coast Catering (and Crown Rentals) for your wedding. You won't regret it!
10/10 the food was amazing!!! I have a severe nut allergy and coast catering made me feel very comfortable about this and I didn't feel worried the day of either. Rachel was wonderful during the entire planning experience and Barry was there for the tasting which was a wonderful surprise. My whole family was and has been raving about the food from the wedding. The service was immaculate too.

First and foremost, the food was absolutely amazing. We had a plated dinner, and every single dish was better than any restaurant meal I've had in a long time. The presentation was beautiful and the flavors were incredible.
But it wasn't just the food that impressed us – the service from Coast Catering and Rachel was impeccable. From the very beginning, the team was helpful and professional as we worked together to design the perfect menu. They were also incredibly accommodating when it came to last-minute details and changes.
In addition to the catering, Coast Catering also helped us with rental selection and setup. Everything was handled seamlessly and we were so impressed with how smoothly everything went.

Coast Catering and their Crown Rentals did a wonderful job with our wedding reception. After reviewing the list of approved vendors with our wedding reception Scripps Seaside Forum, Coast was on our short list for tastings. We had a incredible tasting with Barry Layne and Bianca who made the decision very easy to book with Coast. They were very accommodating and easy to work with. Bianca helped us secure the rentals and table linens to make our wedding design dreams come to life. Our reception was just perfect. Our guests loved the presentation of the food, food quality and the service from their team. Shout out to Chelsea, our day of catering manager, for making the day run smoothly.
OK so, my husband and I REALLY enjoy good food and amazing food was one of our top priorities for our recent wedding. We did tastings with a few other companies, all of which were good but man oh man, Barry's food blew the others out of the water. Literally everything we tasted was unique, inventive, perfectly executed, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious - a real treat from start to finish. Not to mention that Barry has YEARS of experience working in fine dining and catering so I had the utmost confidence in his ability to handle our event. Most importantly, the food on our wedding day did not disappoint. Our guests were EXTREMELY happy with the selection, the quality, and the presentation. Everyone was raving about how good it was and all the bellies were full at the end of the night. I also really appreciated the little touches like that they had a selection of appetizers and a couple cocktails ready for my husband and I to eat/drink when we snuck away for a few minutes after the ceremony (a gentle reminder for me to eat something!). Now for the other nitty gritty that Coast handled for us... We used them to manage essentially all of our rentals and staffing in addition to the food. We were married at my husband's parent's home so needed EVERYTHING brought in. Tricia was extremely knowledgable, organized, and helpful throughout the whole process and worked seamlessly with our wedding planner to make sure everything was prepared and went off without a hitch. Their staff were incredibly knowledgable, helpful, professional, and punctual. The set-up happened over the two days leading up to the wedding and everything looked perfect on the day of. So far as I could tell, everything was executed perfectly and we couldn't be happier with EVERYTHING coast helped to manage and provide for our big day! If you're looking for a unique, absolutely delicious, fine dining experience for your wedding, look no further. You won't be disappointed if you select Coast.
First time working with Coast Catering and I would highly recommend them to future Clients. Admin wise - they were very responsive/ amazing communication, great customer service and helped with any questions we had. For our Client's wedding, they showed up on time and were well prepared. Bianca, the Chefs and Staff were a power team to work with. Lastly, their food presentation + taste was perfect! Everyone had nothing but positive things to say. When we did all of our tastings, the team at Coast catering took the most incredible care of us. The head chef and owner, Chef Barry Lane, personally hosted every tasting. He presented the food, told us about it in detail, and graciously took every suggestion and request we had. When it came time for the wedding, although I didn't have a wedding planner, I felt like Tricia at Coast was that for me. She escorted my husband and me in, and had us see the room before anyone else. She also sat us at the head table, and served us cocktails, and our very own platter of appetizers, as we were doing a grand reveal, and wouldn't be joining the cocktail hour. She also came and grabbed us during the reception, and had us eat! I had expressed to her that I wanted to enjoy the wonderful food we chose, and she made sure of that. I really appreciated her attention to detail, and her care of my husband and me. I do have to say though that unfortunately, a couple of the items that we so lovingly chose didn't come out quite as wonderful as they had been at the tasting, and should also share that I heard from a good amount of my guests that food that was tray passed didn't seem very plentiful, and same with the meat on the charcuterie board, which we had added and were excited to have. If you choose Coast, it will be a huge splurge, and I can promise that you will be well taken care of! I would just stress that if you choose the polenta cake or risotto cake, make sure to request for those to be incredibly and tender, and not overcooked! Also, every couple wants the food free-flowing at their wedding, which you would expect to happen if you paid for all-you-can-eat cocktail hour for your guests. Talk to the team at Coast about these few items, and your wedding food will be five stars, absolutely.
Coast provided the catering services for our wedding in November and everything was absolutely AMAZING! From the service to the food, we could not have asked for anything more. Tricia was so awesome! She made sure we got fed as the bride and groom, and even arranged for appetizers and drinks to get brought out to our limo bus before the grand entrance - so clutch! Speaking of appetizers, we heard from multiple guests how unique and tasty our appetizers were during cocktail hour. And there was no shortage of them either! All in all, Coast's service is unlike any other and for that reason alone, we would recommend Coast. We still cannot believe how quickly dinner was served and cleared for our 185 guests. Everything went so smooth and was very much appreciated by our hungry guests. We were SO impressed! If you're looking for an outside catering company for your wedding day, look no further. Book with Coast and you will have one less thing to stress about! Great food and great service!!!
This review is for my wedding on October 14th, 2017.
I was researching a caterer who have previously worked in my reception venue (San Diego Central Library) because my venue has many and very strict guidelines. My research has led me to Coast Catering. Upon contacting them, my husband and I met with Christie Gowdy for a tasting. There is a fee to their tasting so I was hesitant at first, but my husband really liked how sophisticated their presentation is for their catering so we went ahead and met up with them. Plus the tasting fee will be credited back to us if we choose to book them.
During our tasting, the owner Barry is the one who cooked the food for us. Barry and Christie was very accommodating to our needs and whims. I wanted a Filipino fusion wedding cuisine, and they were able to give us just that; the food tasted amazing as well!
We were glad that they cook the food on site; not like the other caterer we were originally picking who cooks their food in their warehouse and transports the food to the venue. They were very accommodating to us as well when we needed to make installments on the deposit, and we had cuts in our guest count.
They were a one-stop shop! We got the lechon from them (which they make themselves) and the halo-halo station as well (complete with all the traditional Filipino ingredients). We got the string lights from them for the patio. We also got the plates, cutlery, linens, drapery from them. A week before the wedding, my husband got to choose everything (linens, etc) from them.
On our wedding day, we got servers bringing us appetizers before we made our grand entrance. That was awesome because we were super hungry already. During dinner, I saw Christie making sure that everything is going well. I saw her personally serve my cousin who did not RSVP but showed up (a hassle but I'm glad he showed up). She even went to me and my husband, and served us. The servers did a great job. The bartenders were friendly. The food tasted AMAZING. Even the veggie gnocchi that we chose but did not taste in the tasting, that Christie highly recommended, tasted oh so good. Our guests loved the food very much. They said the food was the best they ever tasted in a wedding. My husband and I thought that the taste and presentation was restaurant quality. Our guests also raved about the halo-halo station. All my guests were full, super happy, and super faded (most of them) by the end of the night.
I'm super happy that we chose Coast Catering. Please choose them for any of your catering needs! You won't regret it! They're the best!

Coast was very accommodating and did a great job at our wedding. We had a station style wedding without designated seating and the food was great and fun! Christie was very responsive and made sure things were how we wanted. We did our rentals through Crown the rental company they own. Our rentals looked great and in good quality but they had more limited options than some vendors so just depends what you are looking for, they are also pricier than some places. My only complaint about the wedding was they said they'd leave the food out until about 9pm and they took it away at about 8pm so people didn't get long enough to eat per say, especially with them cleaning up peoples plates so quickly. A lot of food still being eaten was cleaned up so people needed new food. Overall good experience though.
Coast Catering by Barry Layne was one of the BEST decisions we made for our wedding last month. We hired them for both the rentals and catering at our wedding. It is very convenient having a company that does both. The rental process was so easy thanks to Chelsea and the tables, chairs and linens were in amazing condition. Chelsea also helped me create my vision and find the right linens for my color scheme.
The food at the wedding was absolutely delicious. I had multiple guests tell me the food didn't taste like "wedding food" because it was something you would eat at a 5 star restaurant. The hors d'oeuvre were to die for. Both the food and service was very high quality.

Sooo happy Coast did the catering and rentals at our recent wedding in La Jolla. We highly recommend them. The food was just as delicious on the day of as it was at the tasting. As a vegetarian I can not speak highly enough about Coast. We had three stations: salmon, short rib, and "short rib" (portabella mushroom stacks). The veggie short rib was one of the best vegetarian entrees I have ever had - I wish I could have more right now!
Besides excellent food, the wait staff was also excellent. The planning processes was smooth as well. I had the pleasure of working with Jake at first, and then Christie. They both were easy to work with and very professional. Christie thank you so much for answering my countless emails as it got closer to the wedding! We met Joe, from crown rental, at the walk through - and I knew right away he and his team would do a great job with the rentals.
Our venue manger said she isn't suppose to have favorites, but of course she does - and that is Coast. I am so glad she told me so!
They are a little pricey - but then on the day of when you see all the servers and how beautiful (and delicious) everything is you totally understand the price. We did a tasting with another catering company that was cheaper, the thing thing is coast is a little more expensive, but leaps and bounds better quality. Just do two tastings like we did and I think it will become clear that Coast is the way to go :)
I truly think Coast is the BEST there is in San Diego!! My (now) husband and I are mild "foodies" and so the food was EXTREMELY important to me at our wedding - probably THE most important thing! I know it can be hard to pull off delicious food when cooking for 100+ people, but they did such an amazing job. From the tasting session (which was so professional, personal and delicious - run by Barry himself!!) to the actual wedding day. All of our guests were ranting and raving about the food. It really was SO good. Everyone kept saying that the service was the best they've seen. The servers were immediately RIGHT there for anything you could need! They treated my husband and I like we were royalty as well! Always making sure we had appetizers and food, even as we were buzzing around talking to people.
Coast also helped with A TON of the event planning, which was SO nice. They've done so many weddings at our venue, so I really trusted all of their opinions and suggestions. It worked out perfectly, and I could not have asked for a better day, and a big part of it had to do with Coast! I would highly recommend them for any large or small event you may have!
We were referred to Coast through fellow brides. I met with a few caterers, and Coast was by far the most organized. I worked with Barry who was very patient while we went back and forth on the quote (adding and taking away, based on guest count, budget). They also do rentals which is so nice! We did our tasting on Valentines Day and they made it very special, it was like a private dinner for two! I really appreciated the white glove service they provided. It's run by a married couple (Barry & Jen). I did notice they initially provided higher priced flatware (instead of including all price options) on the quote. We had to ask once we saw the show room for lower cost flatware. We were also told (verbally, not written) that we would be given patio furniture at the price mentioned at the tasting, but then they tried to increase it later which I didn't like. They ended up honoring what they initially offered though. We upgraded the linens, but after seeing them at the wedding I didn't think it was worth the cost (they looked the same as the poly). Jennifer took over once we signed the contract and was in charge of overall layout and design. She was VERY organized and thorough...she even created computerized layouts which I appreciated. She also took the time to do a walkthrough. The food was SPECTACULAR, our guests LOVED the food! Their staff was even better, they served everyone at the same time and were very delightful to be around. I highly recommend Coast Catering & Crown Rentals! You can't beat the value and quality of their food & beverage service!!
Coast was definitely on the higher end of our budget when looking for caterers for our wedding but we absolutely fell in love with the food during our tasting.
Overall, their quality of food and service were amazing on the day of our wedding. Guests loved the food (especially the sliders!) and recognized the staff's attention to detail and great service.
We are very happy that we chose Coast catering! We were recommended to them by one of our other vendors. They were outside our budget but when we tasted their food compared to some of the other caterers in the San Diego area, we knew they were going to be worth it! We were hopeful the food would taste just as good as the tasting because that doesn't always happen. The tasting experience was like going to a fancy restaurant. Although they charge for the tasting, if you contract them, they subtract the cost of the tasting from the final price. The day of the event, the servers were very nice and professional, the bar tender was fantastic and well received by our guests. We had specialty cocktails that were made per our recipe, although they forgot the mint. The presentation of the food, appetizers and fruit and cheese display far exceeded our expectations. The food was indeed as good as at the tasting. Our guests were very happy and full! I would highly recommend Coast for your wedding. They are well worth the higher cost.

Coast did our food, rentals and day of coordination. They were exceptional in every way! Alicia Davey who helped us with everything is AWESOME! I almost didn't get the day of coordinator to save money and it was the best investment and I am so glad I did it! I did not have to worry about anything on my special day! She also took care of so many things prior to the wedding, things I would have never even thought of! We had about 6 or 7 caterer tastings and Coast was superior to everyone we tried. Not only the food but the service, fast responses and thorough in every way. Alicia never missed a detail about anything! Everyone is still talking about how wonderful the food and decor was! We had stations which made it fun and Coast was so creative in how they did the good stations! I will recommend Coast and Alicia to everyone!'
We had Coast Catering by Barry Layne cater our wedding, and everything about him is phenomenal! Besides his ridiculously delicious food (his appetizers for our cocktail hour were simply amazing!), we really enjoyed his personal touch and attentional to detail and presentation, as well as flavor! He always replied back to any emails or questions personally and usually within 24-48 hours and was super easy to work with, and so was his wife Jennifer! Together they were the perfect team, and everything looked perfect and tasted even better on our big day! I'd highly recommend them to anyone who loves great food, great service, and wants to have no worries on their big day!
I found Barry in a round-a-bout way. We had requested a quote from a different vendor, but they were busy so they referred us to Coast. Barry scheduled a tasting to accommodate our schedule (I flew out from VA to do the tastings). He had us do the tasting in his restaurant and served us himself. Everything was amazing. He uses all organic and super fresh ingredients. The presentation was so clean and classy looking as well. They also coordinated all of the rentals for us. Barry also offers a Day Of Coordinator service. I had the wedding of my dreams, and it would not have been stress-free and perfect if it weren't for the coordinator. From start to finish, Barry and his staff were professional and nothing short of amazing.
