As wedding venues go this place is absolutely beautiful! We had a completely rained out day and the versatility of being able to quickly change to plan B (because of rain) was amazing!!!
As bride and groom day of, Gina and Team absolutely took care of us and were great! But I HIGHLY recommend hiring a full packaged wedding planner when working with their team. The facility (like stated) is a state run facility and it is definitely run as such! It’s not very DIY friendly, their hours are flexible on their end making it hard to coordinate some times, and we heard through our other vendors they were very strict and stern to the other teams day of. We thankfully, hired a day of coordinator to help facilitate the day, the team at the mansion has the aim to take care of only the mansion (not your wedding)! With this in mind they aren’t very flexible or “go with the flow” for your wedding, they do not take the time to truly understand your wishes for your wedding, they are strictly in charge of insuring the safety of the mansion.
Keep this in mind when planning your big day! If you are will to pay to have a coordinator deal with all of this for you, this is definitely the place for you!
We loved our venue!
Pros:
-Gina and Tammy were AWESOME to work with and get 5 stars.
- Beautiful space. The arbor is to die for for a ceremony and the indoor mansion is just gorgeous for pictures and getting ready
-Convenient location x1000. Literally 5 minute walk to brand new hotel, restaurants and more. Our guests loved this. Also only 15 min drive to airport for out of town guests. Having ceremony, cocktail hour and reception in one spot is awesome.
- Historic! There is such a cool history to the place and we loved that it didn’t feel like a cookie cutter event space. Also supporting local historical sites is cool.
Things to keep in mind:
-You must hire vendors and carry everything (tables, chairs, napkins, silverware, glasses, everything) in and out! We ended up with 20 or so different vendors. This was a lot of work, it adds up $, and can be stressful.
-You only have 2 hours before and one hour after to get everything in and back out again. This can create quite the frenzy beforehand as your vendors have to do drop offs and all decorations must be done within that timeframe, and can cause confusion and missing items afterwards. Have a plan in place and have lots of people to help set up. Remind your friends they have to go get their things before the night is over.
- This means you will NEED a day of coordinator at minimum , as you won’t have time to get ready AND set up AND get married all at once. (And your family and friends probably want to enjoy the hours leading up to the event as well) .A full wedding planner is what I would recommend. If you don’t want to do either, in my opinion, this is not your venue.
The Commander's Mansion was a wonderful choice for our venue. It's a gorgeous gem of a place, hidden away from the busyness of Arsenal street in a convenient and beautiful spot. Many of our guests were able to stay within walking distance, and were able able to experience Boston without the hassle of paying for a stay in the city while still having the opportunity to easily visit and explore it.
Communication was a little difficult at first, especially as we started planning the wedding during 2020 COVID, when there was so much uncertainty and shifting regulations; I can't imagine how difficult this was to navigate for the wedding industry. However, when we had issues that mattered the staff-we worked with Gina specifically- was always quick and attentive in their replies. Communication only improved as we got closer to the wedding. She was amazing the week of the wedding and the day of- WOW. We felt so looked after, and I genuinely believe there were so many little but significant details that they attended to without any fuss that helped the day run smoothly. They were so sweet to my husband and I, as well as our wedding party, even with details such as ensuring we were well hydrated and asking how we were doing. They were eager to help from the moment we arrived from the ceremony, and so thoughtful yet non-intrusive with our guests. Nothing felt rushed or forced, which I've experienced at other weddings.
I was also struck by how flexible while we were doing photos, giving us time, space and suggestions. We have so many amazing shots from that day thanks to our unique setting, both inside the mansions and on the ground. Our guests could not stop talking about how beautiful the location was.
Their personalized attention and responsiveness made all the difference. They offered great advice when it came to picking caterers and other vendors as well. I am so thankful we had our reception here, and I would recommend the Mansion wholeheartedly. If you pick it, you won't regret your choice!
We loved our wedding at The Commander's Mansion! It was the perfect venue for us and allows so much variety to your day without ever leaving the location. We had our ceremony in the grape arbor (which yes, grows real grapes!), cocktails inside the house, and a tented patio reception. I worked mainly with Victoria, and she was great to work with! I always got a reply within 2-3 business days, and she was very professional and thorough in the process. Commander's is a city-owned property, so there are a few rules regarding use of the property that you should fully discuss with the staff to make sure you're okay with them (bar time limits, use of the lawn, etc.) However, being that it's city-owned, you can avoid many of the miscellaneous taxes and fees that come with other wedding venues, which saves you so much! Also they pitch the tent for the whole wedding season and only charge a use fee, which saves SO much money when looking at tented receptions. Commander's was by far one of the best valued venues I looked at in the Boston area. We loved how close it was to the city, which was perfect for our out of town guests (about 20 min from Logan), and there's a brand new Residence Inn essentially across the street. What I liked best about Commander's, was that you can pick your own vendors for almost everything. This helped us save a lot of money, while also choosing vendors that we connected more with. It does add a little more work to your plate as the bride (picking each vendor vs. having one chosen for you, such as catering), but I found it fun to meet with different vendors and sample food! Overall, we had a wonderful experience with Commander's and highly recommend them as a wedding venue.
It’s a lovely place for weddings. Our was during the winter and it was perfect.
We can not say enough about this venue! This was the perfect location! It was so beautiful!
We got married at Commander's Mansion last month and couldn't have asked for a more beautiful venue. When my husband and I started looking at venues, we fell in love instantly with the Mansion. We loved that we were able to have the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception in three different places so that our guests could appreciate all the venue had to offer. We started out working with Casey, who was wonderful, and after she left our main contact person was Tammy, who was also great. At times, it did seem like we had to email or call a couple of times before we received a response, but during the week leading up to the wedding, they responded more quickly. Our only disappointment was that you have to pay extra for any time over 8 hours. This made getting ready at the mansion as we had hoped, out of our budget. Overall, a beautiful venue that feels like you're farther from the city than you really are!
I cannot rave enough about how wonderful the women who run the Commander's Mansion are!
First, some background:
After becoming engaged, my husband and I quickly locked down a location to have our wedding. Sadly, the deeper we got into the planning stages, the more disillusioned we became with the industry. We were paying a lot of money for things we didn't want. The compromises came fast and fierce.
So, we decided to scrap all of our previous work and start over.
My husband and I looked into several new venues and were immediately won over by the Commander's Mansion.
Some excellent perks:
1. The Mansion is available during the daytime
2. There is both indoor and outdoor space available.
3. The facilities managers are incredibly accommodating and flexible. We were able to visit several times and even managed to set up a day early.
I cannot recommend this venue enough. It is so beautiful inside and out that you hardly need to decorate! And they let you move around the furniture.
My wife and I got married at Commander's Mansion last weekend, and everything about it was perfect! Casey, Tammy, and Charlene were so helpful as we figured out all of the details over many months--and our guests were blown away by how beautiful the house, the tent, the grape arbor, and the grounds are. It was everything we hoped for and more! We had such a wonderful day. If only we could do it all over again!
This is definitely not the review I had hoped to write. I had my wedding at the Commander's Mansion last month and I am so disappointed. We had planned to get ready and take pictures at the Commander's Mansion prior to the ceremony and reception. We arrived on schedule with our entire wedding party and no one was there. The mansion was locked. I frantically tried to call anyone I could to find out what was going on and no one answered. Finally, 45 minutes of standing with family and friends outside in the summer, our day of coordinator showed up. I had never met her before and she neither introduced herself nor apologized, over the entire course of the evening. The show went on and the venue is beautiful but I would caution any couple away from the agonizing minutes of wondering whether or not the wedding will happen. The lack of customer service really added insult to injury. The Commander's Mansion has provided a myriad of excuses as to why this would happen. In the end they have agreed to cover the overage charges we incurred (as opposed to refunding us any amount) but I really didn't feel as though they were forthcoming with that solution. Lots of Boston venues are beautiful. Don't waste your time here.
(Note Rae, who has great reviews, left the mansion staff this year. I have a feeling the mansion is a lesser place without her.)
Tammy & Rae were wonderful from start to finish. They can be hard to get ahold of sometimes, but coming up to the wedding day were very responsive, and before that I never had to be in touch more than once or twice before I got an answer. On the day of, Rae was very helpful in coordinating, there when you needed her but never intrusive.
The Mansion itself is a stunning location. When telling people that I was getting married there, they would often say that they had also attended a wedding at the Mansion and had a great time. The grounds and interior are beautiful, and hardly require any decorating at all for a memorable, beautiful night.
The price is one of the best points, as you can bring in all of your own vendors, there is no event minimum, and the venue being run by the city makes it very affordable. It should be mentioned that the Fire Marshal must approve all of your candle choices, and his standards are fairly strict, so that can be difficult. All in all, though, I can't imagine having gotten married anywhere else.
We absolutely loved this as our venue! The building exterior and interior is beautiful and great for wedding photos!!! Tammy and Rae are wonderful to work with and make every effort to make sure you're not too stressed! They work with the vendors the day of so you don't have to worry about anything! The building is tucked away from the main road so you feel that you're away in the country but you're still so close to the highway (great for out of town guests) and the city (after party?!). Would highly recommend to anyone!
The people of Commander's mansion were great. They were able to accommodate our quirky time line and came in early or stayed late to accommodate all of our set up and clean up. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained. We loved that we could bring in any vendor we wanted.
I was really interested in this venue and wanted to set up an appointment to view it. I'm based in London so the best way for me to handle everything was via e-mail. Over the course of a month I e-mailed 3 times and left a voicemail desperately trying to set something up before my trip to Boston. Every other venue I contacted got back to me within a few days. Still silence from the Commander's Mansion even now!
Blessing in disguise as I would NEVER want to work with such an unprofessional event co-ordinator who ignores e-mails from a potential client. From my experience, I advise to steer clear and spend energy elsewhere.
The Commander's Mansion was the perfect place for my wedding. Lovely inside and out, very well kept! It had that old-world, romantic feel to it, and I loved that it was close to Boston so that guests from out of town could still stay in the city and see the sights. We had just under 180 people, cocktail hour inside the mansion and then dinner and dancing outside under the tent. They say the place can host up to 225 but honestly I can't imagine putting many more than 180 under the tent with a big enough dance floor.
Rae and Tammy were nice to work with, Rae even let my mom go plant new flowers in the potters outside (I thought my mom was nuts, but it did spruce them up a bit). The only annoying thing was that they wanted to close the bar early because one of my guests got a little too tipsy and was apparently "ruining it for everyone else"--which frankly I didn't think was true and especially didn't think was something the bride needed to be told.
Other than that, I loved the place itself and thought it was a gorgeous spot for a wedding. I also loved that we were able to have our reception from 7-12 and there were no sound ordinances or anything like that so the band could keep playing right up til midnight.
The Commander's Mansion is absolutely a beautiful location for a wedding reception. I loved having my wedding there, my guests loved the mansion, and it was a great time. Unfortunately however, getting everything organized was a hassle and a half considering it would take the mansion staff days, sometimes even weeks, to get back to me when I e-mailed with questions and forget about getting an answer on the phone! That said, once you get in touch with someone (probably Rae), they are very nice and definitely very open to helping you make your day as great as possible.
I loved using the Commander's Mansion! The house and grounds were beautiful and they even have a tent set up permanently from spring to fall. We used the bridal and groom's dressing rooms upstairs to get ready, the grape arbor for the ceremony, the downstairs for the cocktail hour, and the tent for dinner and dancing. We had about 100 guests which was just enough to not feel crowded, although it probably would have been tight if the ceremony had to be indoors. Rae and Tammy were very nice and communicated well. I got a discount on the rental because my MOH was a Watertown resident, and we saved money using the tables the mansion provides. Unfortunately they charge extra if you go over the 8 hour limit on a Saturday, which really isn't enough time for set-up, wedding, and break-down. I wish the rental price was for the whole day. Oh well. Still, it was a fantastic place and just perfect for our relatively low-key summer wedding!
We had our reception here in September. With around 100 guests, it was the perfect space. Though one could just have the whole event out in the great tent in the back (over a patio, a big plus), we wanted to use more of the gorgeous inside of the mansion. So we started out our cocktail hour in the ballroom and small rooms downstairs there, had our first dance, and moved out to the tent for dinner. We then moved back inside for dancing and dessert, and had a few fun things (slideshow, photobooth) for those not into dancing upstairs. Though like many reception sites, the communication was not great upfront before we booked, Rae was super leading up to the wedding, and they were very accommodating with setup and decorating.
The Commander's Mansion was the perfect venue for my wedding and was pretty affordable. It is so beautiful and there are many spaces for cocktails, the ceremony and the reception. Tammy is very helpful BUT she only works part time so it can be a challenge to schedule site visits. When you do meet with her she is helpful, friendly and as accommodating as she can be. The price is affordable but Tammy seemed to underestimate the amount of time we would need and you pay by the hour so the price can go up quickly so be careful!
The mansion was beautiful back drop for our low key wedding. It was beautiful and they have tables you can borrow and other things you will need. The tent is additional and it is pricy but all tents are. They were great to work with and I'm very happy I married there.
I loved the decor of the mansion, especially the bridal room. The location was very convenient as well;If you have over 75 guests I would not recommend the location because you could not have a sit down dinner in one room, your guests would be seperated into different rooms, unless you had the reception outside under a tent on the property premises.
