Highly recommend working with David Joseph’s for your wedding! The food was delicious and the portions generous. So many guests told us how great they thought the food was. Joseph is an absolute pleasure to work with, is detail oriented, and is very invested in the event’s success. They were also able to accommodate dietary restrictions and made me an extra special vegetarian option. From the amazing food, to arranging rentals, setting tables, moving chairs after the ceremony, and the dinner and dessert service, he and his team will make sure the event goes off without a hitch so you can enjoy your night and have the best time. Thank you for making our event such a wonderful success!
This was not the review I wanted to write.
TL;DR caterer’s 5 big lies
1 they never double book
2 invoice estimate was misleading (cocktail hour)
3 staff didn’t clean
4 both Joe and the Captain promised staff would help set the table
5 Caterer will follow a strict timeline for when to bring out the food
6 They left the bride setting up alone. They left the bride and groom cleaning at the end of the event alone. Food came late, packed up early. Leftovers at cocktail hour even though the table was empty.
I am a customer that made a down payment in 2019, right before getting hit with COVID, and our celebration did not happen until recently. When we went to the taste test event the food was delicious, we were impressed, but that wasn't the only reason I chose this caterer. This wedding wire choice award holder had review after review about how they helped with the wedding planning and were a best value candidate. From the get go, we were looking for a caterer that would work with our small budget, which at the time in 2019 was no more than 100 pp for 150 people. We were never trying to have anything super fancy, just a simple gathering with good food. Although we were blown away by the food, I wasn't ready to put a down payment until he made the clear promise to us that they NEVER double book events, that we will have their full attention that day. That was the 1st big lie.
From the day of the taste test, we told him we wanted 3 proteins for dinner and he already warned us that it would be pricey. When he gave us an estimate, he ignored this. We told him again that we wanted 3 proteins and he continued to push back that it would be pricey. We said that we would rather cut other items and budget for the three proteins so that our guests can enjoy more food. Our second invoice estimate continued to only show 2 proteins. I started to see that our caterer lacks listening skills, but I had no idea how far that extended.
I was asked to update a floorplan after seeing the space with our caterer. I did so on Aug 19. He asked me to send him this information over and over, and didn't explain to me that my floorplan was miscalculated until the 31st. Leaving me only 3 weeks until my big day to finalize item counts that I personally needed to purchase. Besides being thrown in circles and answering the same questions over and over like for example, about whether or not I was buying tablecloths (even though the draft Aug 30th invoice already said it would be provided by me), I was still harassed by the food captain up to the wedding day on Sep 23 about said tablecloths. These were inconveniences, but they weren't deal breakers - Joe may have been frequently preoccupied with bigger jobs, but he was cordial. It didn't feel nice to see through his long response times that even in the last two weeks of the most important day of our life, we were not even remotely his priority. Even near the end, he kept calling me Pia or Lia, when my name is in my email and all over the invoices.
Let's talk about the invoice, I tried to be proactive with my review of it. Here's the 2nd big lie. In 2019, when they provided an estimate for cocktail hour, they gave me an estimated pricing for 40 people, when the expected population was for 150 people. I caught that when I noticed a 60% increase from the original invoice estimate, far exceeding the past 4 years of inflation. I hope that that was an honest mistake, but if it wasn't, that's a sneaky way to get the invoice to match my budget for me to put a down payment.
I found that the invoice got fat fingered with a transposed error and asked for a revision, I later noticed that the subtotal used an Amex fee cc rate when we were going to use visa and asked for another revision, it seemed that my diligence started to annoy him, he even brought it up on my wedding day. We questioned why he didn't reduce the staff count when our RSVP list was reduced by 40 people (36 percent). Now here comes the 3rd big lie, he insisted that he needed this amount of staff for all the moving and cleaning. They didn't clean. My husband and I had to sweep the floors at 10pm because the Captain - Benson dismissed his staff already and was about to leave without consulting us at all. We asked where the brooms were and he didn't even know. I had to hold him and ask where the garbage bags were and why they didn't clean and he said I thought I didn't need to, you were just going to bring everything home as if my car was some kind of huge truck that could possibly carry multiple truckloads of leftovers, more on that later. Didn't even offer to clean himself, zero accountability. Also, since they don't clean, maybe wedding wire should review the bullet points that are shown on the website that I found them from. Between that and the verbal agreement, I was quite dumbfounded.
This transitions well to how I can just talk about the captain, Benson who failed and lied to me on the day of the event. There are only two people who are very clear on expectations of this event, Joe and me. We worked out the logistics together and I assured him I would get there no later than 3 and was available for any and all questions. The caterer hounded my husband who tried to reach me, since Joe was nowhere to be found (refer to lie #1). I arrived by about 1PM, I introduced myself and told him to direct any and all questions to me before the start of the event. Smugly, he says he has lots of questions (he had 2 questions) and I gave him all the answers. He assured me that he would allocate staff to set the tables for me and that I just needed to give them guidance on how we wanted it. We set the table and there was no sign of help. Anxiously, we set more tables waiting for staff to arrive to no avail. My MIL with arthritis took charge and set the remaining tables. Somewhere while we were putting utensils out, Benson had the nerve to direct my MIL with how to set the utensils. Still, not a single wait staff arrived. The girls were supposed to be in the bathroom getting ready but instead they dropped everything to help the struggling bride, me, to put all the wedding favors on the table. I still needed to set up the guest sign-in table, the seating arrangements, and the projector, and my husband did the decorations. The catering staff, according to my husband, were just playing on their phones while we were running around. Zero communication with me, zero craps to give as they see the bride doing everything. What caterer doesn't even help set up the table especially after promising to help? HUGE LIE number 4. I almost forgot to mention that they didn't even follow the floor plan and didn't set the correct number of tables, I had to bring Benson over and bring this to his attention and he said that everything was fine because I guess he doesn't know how to read a floorplan.
Well, Benson has set the tone now to go screw yourself. Clearly anything he offers, he won't deliver, there's no point in asking him anything. My FIL had questions for him about where to put the trash, and he responded that he couldn't handle being spoken to. This man cannot even be spoken to. He does not work well under stress, maybe he should reconsider management positions. Let's hope he can just handle the food.
The catering has their own timeline, and they are supposed to follow it strictly (big lie number 5). They know to serve the food after the show. The show ended, people took photos, the whole bridal party walked out, we gave 4 speeches. A whole 30 minutes late on schedule and the buffet was STILL NOT READY. Benson can't read floorplans OR timetables apparently.
People ate and tried to get seconds, they threw out huge amounts of food and didn't give people any time at all to come back for food.
Speaking of food. Cocktail hour was a disaster, why was the appetizer station empty and yet I have all these left over unopened bags of chips and dips at the end of the night that weren't put out?
I purposely bought a whiskey sour mix for one guest, it was in the itinerary and provided a week in advance. You literally just add the mix and whiskey per the instructions right there on the bottle. The bartender refused to make it for my guest and said it was too complicated to make. The mixer SAYS it is specifically a whiskey sour mix, it was even opened. I also hear that they were chintzy with pouring drinks. I have more than half my original purchased alcohol from that night. Why were they being chintzy? This catering service was frugal with giving out food and drinks even when it was plentiful.
I have written so much disappointment that I don't even want to keep writing. No one let me down more than the caterer. Benson did not speak to me about anything when so much was going wrong. Again the only people who know the logistics are Joe and myself. Joe wasn't there most of the time. Closing time was 11, the caterer was long gone and no follow up from Joe until the next morning.
If our business wasn't worth your while, I wish you could've just said so. It's so much harder to have had to deal with this go screw yourself attitude on the day of the event. I would have hired a local restaurant and called it a day. I thought this catering company was going to be dependable and become the main force of the event. The most reliable thing Joe did was take care of rentals, but what's the point of setting up food if no one gets to eat because the staff doesn't put food out with sufficient time. Put food out late and pack early. How irresponsible. And instead, I have endless leftovers that were tossed out or handed back to me to throw out ourselves.
I wouldn't recommend this company to my worst enemy.
We had a wonderful experience working Joseph and his team for our wedding of 112 guests.
Superb food, fairly priced and flawlessly executed with a smile! What more could one ask for.
They are special people who care deeply about events and hospitality. They will hold your hand and guide you through the military campaign of organizing one of these beasts!
I recommend you start early, the planning tools that Joseph will share with you will be invaluable in helping you understand and make decisions on the myriad details that they have already thought through and itemized.
I'd ignore that person with their one star review, it sounds completely opposite to our experience of their attentiveness and meticulous attention to detail.
Truly wonderful, Joseph we miss you already!
Any questions?
David and Joseph MADE my wedding day!! They are truly fantastic at what they do. I have multiple severe food allergies, so food was one of the most important things for me and one of the things that I was most nervous about when we started planning. From day 1 both of them were absolutely incredible - kind, careful, patient, and willing to go the extra mile to make sure that I had the best (and safest) day possible. The tasting was unbelievable - I've never had so much food made specially for me, and things that I would never expect another restaurant or caterer to do. It was multiple hours of the best food I've ever had, we were truly blown away and booked them on the spot. Throughout the year of working together, the team was SO careful. They read every ingredient of every ingredient to make sure that I could eat it, and had specific chefs and waiters on hand during the day that could only make/serve my food. They went above and beyond my wildest dreams! Joseph also helped us with the rentals and some of the other logistics, advocating for us when the rental company raised their prices and working with us when we had last minute changes. He is popular and busy (and for a good reason) but I never felt like he forgot about me, even when I got emails late at night or if there was some time that went in between calls, we were always able to pick up where we left off, and our calls often went over an hour where we were talking through every detail. He worked closely with my planner on timeline and logistics to make sure that the day ran smoothly - and it did! The two things I have gotten the most compliments on are how seamless the day was, and how incredible the appetizers were, two things that wouldn't have been possible without Joseph and the team. Food was hot, and delivered quickly, and the drinks were flowing all night. I now feel like Joseph is an Uncle with a fabulous catering business, and I will miss our catch ups and his incredible food. I look forward to working with them again in the future!
Maybe they’re good if you’re spending a ton of money but wow if you are on a budget stay FAR away. They ignored my onion allergy and served something totally different than what I asked. I didn’t even eat at my own wedding. Nightmare from beginning to end. They were so unresponsive and I truly don’t know how I could have been more clear. If you want your day to be special, go somewhere (anywhere) else.
WOW! From the first phone call with Joseph, to the last goodbye of the night, he was a pleasure to work with. He and his team executed perfectly. I could not have imagined the number of compliments we would receive on the food and service alone. We were floored and so were our guests.
Our amazement began right away. After the ceremony, 2 huge trays of cocktail hour food were prepared for us to enjoy. And not just prepared. The platters were decorated, and presented beautifully which really warmed out hearts (and stomachs)We dove in as if we had never eaten before and enjoyed every last bit of food with huge smiles on our faces. Next thing we new, there was more food! We then made our way into the dining room for dinner. Everything was set up beautifully. Our venue has no kitchen and no true back of house for staff to do what they need to. But you would never have known. Glasses were filled before they were finished. Food was brought out HOT - actually hot. And it was all delicious. Jospeh and his staff are miracle workers and we could not be happier that we got the chance to work with them! THANK YOU!
Joseph and his team are truly amazing! They went above and beyond for my wife and I during our wedding planning process. They are very detailed oriented, and have really good food. If you are looking for a caterer who will truly care about your wedding as much as you do if not more, choose this one! They are AMAZING! the lines of communication are always open, no matter what day or time. They pay special attention to any of your needs. We appreciate all that they have done for us. Jen is also phenomenal!!!!! My wife and I love her. Again I cannot stress their attention to detail and they are cost effective. Thank you to joseph and Jen for bringing our vision to life and being our day of coordinators!!! They are AWESOME!!!areAWESOME!!
We met Joseph and Jen at the rental showroom a little less than a year before our wedding. They genuinely wanted to get to know us and help us have the best wedding celebration possible. They took the reign of our wedding and made a spreadsheet that thinks of everything a bride and groom should think about before their wedding. It felt like we had hired planners as well as caterers. We had several touch bases throughout the months and got everything finalized about a week out from the wedding. He helped us work within our budget and didn't try and rip us off in any way.
The food and energy of the wedding was incredible. So many people had told us the hors d'ouevres were the best they have had. They had made sure my husband and I and our family was taken care of the whole night.
Genuine good people, good food, and good service. They had made the venue look so gorgeous and elegant and didn't bother me at all while I was getting ready in the bridal suite. They are the complete packages and true professionals. We are so happy they made our wedding so memorable and would recommend them over and over again.
From the very first phone call we were very impressed with David Josephs Catering. We had spoke to several catering companies before speaking with David Josephs and honestly were a bit overwhelmed and felt defeated. Every other company lacked any personal connection and were extremely pricey - like way over budget! Every other company focused only on what they were making and cared little about us and our day.
When we first spoke to Joseph Farahat on the phone we immediately felt a connection. Our conversation lasted more than an hour and he asked several questions about us, our relationship, what we were looking for in terms of food, service and the feel of our day. He gave us some tips on how to save money, how to get what we wanted within our budget. It didn't feel like a vendor/client phone call but rather a conversation between friends.
We felt like the decision to go with David Josephs Catering was a no-brainer and we quickly started planning out our day with Joseph. We had many meetings and hour long phone calls with him to plan out every detail including the timeline, the menu, everything! We had floorpans, charts, spreadsheets, which at first feels overwhelming but by the end we realized all the paperwork kept everyone on the same page and left no question unanswered. He was extremely organized. He was very accommodating to our busy schedules and made himself available on weekends and evenings which worked best with our work schedules.
The food was also delicious! David Josephs invited us to a restaurant they own to do a menu tasting! It was fun and fabulous and we felt so taken care of! We tried 30+ hors d'oeuvres, 10+ entrees, and several desserts! We gave notes and narrowed down to the food we exactly wanted. Everyone at the wedding complimented the food and said it was one of the best wedding dinners they've experienced.
David Josephs isn't just a catering company. They basically took the role of a wedding planner and coordinator. They worked with all our vendors including the florist, the DJ, the venue, the rentals company...which saved us a lot of time and back-and-forth emails...which while planning a wedding time is a hot commodity. Joseph's partner Jen was by our side for most of the wedding, answering every question we had, solving every minor problem that arose, and even would just magically appear behind us with a tray of drinks, anticipating that we would want one.
We truly felt catered by Joseph, Jen and the rest of the David Josephs Catering company on our wedding day, which I guess is fitting from a catering company. They truly took the time and energy to give us exactly what we wanted and added so much to the magical day. They were so personal and caring, we truly feel like we made some new friends with Joseph and Jen and will definitely keep in touch with them. Truly a 5 star establishment and we highly recommend them.
Wow, I really can't say enough about how much David Josephs made our wedding special. From the first time that we sat down with Joseph until the end of our wedding, he went out of his way to make sure that everything worked out perfectly. He was open, attentive, and answered any and all questions that we had. The day of, he and his utterly amazing team made everything go off without a hitch. The food was lovely, the team kicked ass, and Joseph made our day very special. Thumbs up, A+!!
We loved working with David Joseph's Catering! Joseph was fantastic about taking care of the bridal party before and after the ceremony. There was some fruit and cheese in the bridal suite before the ceremony, and then after the ceremony, he made sure that my husband and I got a chance to try every hors d'oeuvre that was being served during cocktail hour. The fact that he brought food to us as we were taking a moment to relax after the ceremony was truly a life-saver. And most importantly, everything tasted great! They also managed to execute a delicious dinner at the Museum of the Moving Image, which has unique restrictions, such as no open flame. They are great about covering all the details and making sure you don't have to worry about any of it. They were also wonderful about working within our price range and offering solutions to meet our budget. They truly seem to love what they do, and that makes all the difference.
Everything was perfect, and Joseph and his team went ABOVE AND BEYOND every step of the way. Our guests couldn't stop talking about the wonderful food (especially at a museum venue without a kitchen!) and how friendly and attentive the entire team was. They did the entire event (pre-event drinks, cocktail hour, dinner and an amazing dessert spread), and everything was perfect. From the tasting to the wedding, everyone was extremely professional, prompt and organized. Joseph helped us think through all details of our wedding (far beyond the catering/rentals) and helped us feel relaxed and ready for the big day. I really don't think we could have pulled the wedding off without Joseph, Jen and the rest of the team's help. If you're looking for a catering company for your wedding or event, there's no one better than David Joseph's Catering!!!!
We used David Joseph's catering for our wedding reception on October 17, held at Midtown Loft and Terrace. In short, they were nothing but spectacular. They provided food, rentals, and staff-- all of which far exceeded our expectations, and at a very reasonable price. If you, like us, are trying to put on a 5 star wedding (while avoiding 5 star prices) stop now and give them a call. I promise you that you will not regret it.
For months leading up to the wedding, we coordinated with Joseph, one of the co-owners. To say that he was more than accommodating is an understatement. He worked with us around our schedule (which is hectic) and meant lots of weekend mornings. No problem, he was available. Not only that, but he made us feel so at ease with the process (even to the point of convincing us that we didn't need a day-of coordinator... Joseph was on it.) And he truly was. He is the nicest guy, and went way above and beyond in helping us capture our vision and give us the wedding of our dreams. He helped us coordinate the food, decor, rentals, staff, flow of events... basically the entire day, and all of it was executed flawlessly.
The food. Oh, the food. Incredible. Their standard buffet service includes tons of options, and across a wide spectrum of cuisines. All of it is absolutely delicious. We stayed relatively safe with the standards (ie. filet of beef, eggplant parm etc.) but with a slight cuban flair with such passed hors-d'oeuvres as pan con tomate and tortilla espnanola. Those later two dishes aren't on their list of menu options, by the way. They, once again, went off script and created these items special for us. How many other caterers would do that?
Day of, they provided a staff fit for an army. All of them were so professional, friendly, and tended to our guests (and us) religiously. My wife and I specifically had a staff member constantly handing us drinks, food, asking us if we needed anything… it was wonderful. Joseph stayed on site the entire evening (!) and his captain, Jen, made sure everyone was happy and that we were sticking to the order of events in a timely manner. We can’t say enough how fantastic the team was.
One more thing, and maybe the most important, cost. We received quotes from dozens of caterers, and none of them would provide the level of service or food quality at the price David Joseph’s quoted us. It’s really amazing how reasonable their cost is compared to the amount that you are getting. By far the best value in the city.
Now that it is all over, I can't tell you how many people are telling us, verbatim, "this was the best wedding I have ever been to". We completely agree, and it would not have been possible without David Joseph’s catering. The food was extraordinary, the decor was elegant and classy (exactly how we envisioned), and the execution was absolutely flawless. Sitting here writing this, my new wife just said to me, "I got my dream wedding". I did too, and you will as well if you go with David Joseph’s catering.
David, Joseph and all of their staff went above and beyond to make our wedding day more perfect than I could have ever imagined. Their professionalism, attention to detail and calm under pressure made them such a pleasure to work with. Jen - the captain - was exceptional and made sure that everything ran smoothly. She was outstanding and I do not think that the day would have run as it did without her and Joseph's leadership. And the food?!?! Everyone raved about how incredible it was. We did a BBQ theme and I cannot stop dreaming about the Mac & Cheese. They took our BBQ concept and turned it into high end dining! What a treat. If you are planning a wedding, I highly recommend DJ Catering. They will make the most special day of your life even more than you could have ever dreamed of!
What can I say about David Josephs that hasn't already been said? They treated us like family throughout our entire wedding process - nothing was too much for them to do and no detail was too small for them to overlook. When we booked our wedding at the Foundry, which is a totally blank space where everything needs to brought in (tables, chairs, forks, literally everything), I was overwhelmed with the prospect of planning out all these details on my own. I shouldn't have even thought about it, because this incredible team took care of every small detail for us. They knew what to order and exactly how much, so that none of my guests would have known for an instant that just hours before the wedding, the venue was completely empty. This team is so passionate about what they do that I felt completely comfortable handing the reins over to them for much of the planning - this is what you NEED when planning a wedding. They seemed to approach our wedding with the same level of passion and care as if they were handling the wedding of one of their own family. I cannot tell you how special that made us feel or how grateful we are to them for what they did for us.
As for the food - I have not stopped getting compliments since my wedding. It was just phenomenal. This is not typical wedding food, but the kind of meal you would expect to get a high-end restaurant. The presentation was gorgeous, and people could not stop coming up to tell me how delicious everything was. Everyone tells you that you won't eat at your wedding, but I don't think there was a single thing that I did not taste at mine, just because I knew I could not miss it. That, coupled with the incredible service, just made for an outstanding effort on their part. Booking this team was simply the best decision of our wedding, as they made the planning seamless, and the actual wedding was just more than I could have ever imagined or asked for. I will always be so grateful for what they created for us.
I just got married in my back yard on October 1st, hosting 160 people. It's always been my dream to get married at home but once the process starts, you realize that what you're essentially doing is building a restaurant. The details can pretty overwhelming what with everything else you have to do. Once I hired David Josephs, it was if a huge responsibility had been taken away from me. They think of every last detail. They have impeccable taste and an ability to "see" your event and how exactly it will unfold. They were even able to talk me out of a few things they said I would not need and they were exactly right, saving me money to boot. The owners are so down to earth and easy to talk to, you really feel taken care of and almost like good friends from the start. And then there's the food. Six weeks later and I can't go into the post office or the supermarket or anywhere in the town I live without someone commenting on the food. Our appetizers were so over the top perfect and delicious and beautiful, it was like being in a four star restaurant. Oftentimes, the presentation or the "fancy" nature of an hors d'oeuvre takes the place of taste. Not so with these guys. Every bite everyone took was followed with that look you give to the person next to you that says, "oh my God." The cocktail party food ranged from dumplings in tiny Chinese take out containers with their own chopsticks, to tuna sashimi on crisps to buffalo style mini meatballs to a variety of gourmet cheeses grilled on tiny sourdough squares and a variety of others. They have A LOT to choose from. Everything was passed and looking lovely on white trays with fresh flower garnishes. It was always HOT and that's hard to pull off when you're working outside. Insofar as dinner is concerned, we had requested an Italian style buffet meal. The owners encouraged me to add a sauce on the side to my chicken milanese, a putanesca, and I'm still being complimented on it. I wanted eggplant parmigiana and they suggested eggplant napoleons, harder to make but better looking and I wish I had a plate in front of me right now. The veggies were vibrant and flavorful, the pasta was perfect...even the bread served with little side bowls of olive oil were fabulous. Believe me, with a lot of Italian mothers on the guest list, serving Italian was risky but we got rave reviews from even the pickiest of cooks! On top of all this, they are complete pros when it comes to set up and clean up. They took great care in my kitchen, papering the floors and leaving my counters and sink cleaner than they were before. They cooked the main meal out of my GARAGE and clearly brought everything they would possibly need to pull that off. In short (ha ha) do yourself a favor and cross one major thing off your list of things to worry about... hire David Josephs for your wedding. You will be nothing less than thrilled and your guests will be completely impressed.
