I had a friend refer me to a different cake vendor at first, but that vendor was booked. After having contacted a few other bakeries and finding out they were also booked, I was wonderfully lucky to stumble upon Fondant Flinger and Rachel (the owner) who still had availability! I was a little concerned that there were no reviews yet on theknot plus this was a NOLA destination wedding, so I was planning everything remotely and didn't have a chance to meet Rachel in person before making a decision. However, my concerns flew away after my very first interaction with her. Rachel was always communicative and professional, but most importantly her creativity and skill know no bounds, which made for AMAZING cake.
When I first described what kind of cake I wanted, Rachel drew up a quote that was a lot more than my allocated cake budget. When I mentioned that we may have to forego my initial design and just go with cupcakes to lower the expense, Rachel immediately came up with the idea to make a smaller version of the cake I really wanted at the top of a stand and fill the rest with cupcakes, which would both fit my budget and still provide the cake design I loved. Besides, cupcakes are just so fun and informal and that way we could have the perfect mix of elegant and simple. Before we finalized the design, Rachel sent me a sketch of what the whole set-up would roughly look like and that's when I really knew I had lucked out - the sketch was right up my alley and I had an inkling the real thing was going to turn out even better.
Flexibility and creativity was the theme in all of my interactions with Rachel. When I realized I didn't have time to make a trip to NOLA prior to the wedding (we were relocating unexpectedly two weeks before the wedding!), she actually express shipped the cake tastings to me with a special ice pack to keep them cool. Talk about going above and beyond! We had a blast trying out the different cake combinations after dinner with my family.
I provided Rachel several photos of the types of cakes I really liked and basically asked her to design something unique using those ideas. Amazingly, she pretty much incorporated all the ideas I sent her while still coming up with a design that was clean and elegant. I loved it.
As we were finalizing flavor selections and final design details, Rachel again went above any beyond by working directly with my florist to ensure the theme was consistent. The sugar flowers she made to decorate the cake matched with the actual flowers in our bouquets and on the tables and were BEAUTIFUL! The cupcakes were adorable too, with delicate white and gold designs on the toppers.
But it didn't end there, on top of looking beautiful, the cake and cupcakes were absolutely delicious - moist and not too sweet, with great flavor and texture. Our guests are still raving about both the look and the taste of the cake.
In fact, after my experience with Fondant Flinger, I'm a bit surprised that I'm the first to review it here. Rachel's work is incredible, her pricing is reasonable, and she is a joy to work with. Maybe I just have a huge sweet tooth, but that cake was definitely one of the highlights of my wedding. Ten out of ten! Now I desperately need an excuse to make another trip to New Orleans and have an event for which a cake is needed so I can work with Rachel all over again.
Fondant Flinger designed a beautiful cake for our wedding. Rachel’s personality and level of service is just as amazing as her work.
Rachel really involved me in the design process. I wanted a Japanese inspired wedding cake with Cherry Blossoms, Kokeshi Dolls and Paper Cranes. Rachel lived in Guam and traveled to Japan, so she was able to culturally relate to what I wanted. I received hand sketches and Rachel encouraged feedback on even the smallest detail.
Rachel sent me a detailed list of flavors and encouraged custom requests for my cake tasting. Things got really hectic and I couldn’t squeeze in another trip to New Orleans. Honestly at that point, I was so pleased with the service I didn’t care how the cake tasted. LOL! But, Rachel went the extra mile and packed up all the samples in cute boxes and shipped them to Dallas (without compromising taste at all). My mom, sister and I had such a hard time picking out our favorite, we decided on 4!
On the day of the wedding, Rachel was there promptly (despite heavy traffic). I was pleased with the sketches but it didn’t compare to seeing the cake in person. The cake was beautiful and a solid conversation piece. My guests are still amazed that a cake so pretty tasted so good. My husband does not eat sweets and he ate 4 pieces!
I would recommend Rachel to any bride. She is extremely creative and lots of fun to work with. Her response time is immediate and her attention to detail is flawless.
If I ever host another event in New Orleans, I wouldn’t consider anyone else!
We had our wedding in New Orleans and Rachel was so easy to work with. The cake not only looked amazing but tasted it too. She coordinated delivery of the cake and we didn't have to worry about anything. We ordered butter cream instead of fondant and it was the best cake I have had. I would highly reccomend her services.
I recently got married in New Orleans. I wanted to get something awesome for my groom and I wanted to make sure he remembered it!!! I was very impressed that for the most part the cake itself was still able to be made with butter cream (not a fan of fondant)and still have so much detail. My groom was a baseball player in high school and college and he loves to duck hunt. Rachel was able to take all of the ideas me and my mom could come up with and make a spectacular cake!! She made me a replica of the baseball field he played on in high school and put a hunter in a duck hunting boat and decoys around it on the pitchers mound (he was a pitcher). She even took the extra cake from rounding off the field and made cake balls with it that looked like baseballs!!! It was so great working with her as well. She made sure to get the camo patter he uses right all the way down to the muddy water color!! He loved it and said it was better than perfect and could not have asked for anything better. I have to agree with him 100%!!!!
