A discrete and beautiful venue. My wife went to an expo in Honolulu where she got information from the event & tour coordinator. From the pictures down to the price, this venue looked like a dream come true. A couple weeks later we did our tour of the grounds and it was nothing short of amazing and the perfect location my bride and I wanted to hold our wedding. There are two locations on site, where you can use one or both, but for the price of the rental we opted to use both. The terrace is beautiful and outdoors overlooking lush greenery which we chose for our ceremony location and the Emmalani hale a cozy yet spacious space to entertain and celebrate with our guests as our reception area. We had a fairly small wedding with 70 guests so the space we needed was perfect. The terrace accommodates 50 seats, but there's plenty of standing room. The hale could accommodate 100, but with the way we had our tables and small dance floor we just got by with space having our 70 guests. You have to keep in mind that if you have more than 50 guests you will need to have valet. We thought it was a nice touch for our guests to arrive and not have to park their vehicles anyway. In the end we had so many compliments from our guests about how beautiful this venue is especially in the afternoon leading into the evening.
The Queen Emma Summer Palace is a historic and picturesque venue, the perfect spot for an intimate garden wedding. From the stately ancient trees in the garden to the casual Hawaiian elegance of the reception room, each detail was exactly what we wanted. My husband and I loved it, our guests were impressed, and the whole day ran smoothly there. It's also pretty affordable compared to many other locations in Hawaii.
The palace is a smaller venue, but worked well for our 70 guests. Because it is a historic site there are a few (sensible) rules users are asked to follow, such as: no confetti can be thrown during the send-off, tents cannot be staked into the ground, etc. It is in a valley, so be aware that a bit of rain could be a factor (we were very lucky with our singularly sunny January day). We also needed to have a few parking attendants present, accomplished by a few family friends, but if the wedding was any larger we would probably have had to hire a valet service. Finally, we handled the decoration of the reception room ourselves, from hanging lights to setting up the tables and greenery. It turned out absolutely beautiful, but did require detailed planning on the part of me and my team (hiring a wedding planner would help with this, but I didn't mind doing it myself).
I also truly appreciated learning more about the history of the palace, and about Queen Emma and her husband, King Kamehameha IV. If you enjoy history, be sure to take a tour inside the palace itself and talk with the guides who are present during operating hours. They will even keep the palace open for your guests, free of charge, before the wedding (they offered this to us from 4–5 pm).
If you're willing to invest some effort, the Queen Emma Summer Palace will provide stunning results!
We had our ceremony in the terrace area and it was perfect. We set up our own chairs to save money and had an aisle runner and arch. It comfortably held about 80 people. The only downside is that if your function is more that 50 people you have to provide valet service. However, with the money you save from the affordable site rental, I think it was worth it.
