Dora was the best!! We had many questions and she never once said no to any of our questions or how many times my now husband called her. I am so grateful. We loved the food and our guest also commented how good and how much it was.
We recently had our wedding in the Maile garden and our reception in the Laulima rooms. We were a little hesitant to use a DOD hotel for our wedding, but they offered 5 star service at a 3 star price and the venue is the prettiest on the island. Their staff is very professional and accommodating. They even went to the store to get soymilk a day before the wedding in a last minute request. We wanted to do a specialty drink that had about 15 ingredients and they were happy to do so and made pitchers of it to make for fast service at the bar. Their wait staff was extremely helpful and fun. We did the Luau buffet and without a doubt it was the best food we had on our entire trip to Oahu and Kona. We are still raving about it and our guests were very impressed and are still talking about how great their food was. They had a server make plates for us and brought us whatever we wanted to so we didn’t have to go up to the buffet. Their rooms are as nice as the Hilton next door, and their grounds are much prettier. We did our photos around the hotel grounds and the backdrops will make for breathtaking photos. They were flexible with checking in and checking out on the day of the wedding. Their barefoot bar has an awesome Mongolian dinner on Friday nights and we had our welcome reception at the barefoot bar. The venue is great, beautiful view, cheap drinks, and fast service. Our guests had an absolute blast and returned to the barefoot bar for an after-party when our reception wrapped up.
This is going to be a hard one to write. My fiancé is a former Marine (although you never are a former Marine) and the service we received was mixed. We first looked into the Hale Koa as they were the cheapest location to have a smaller wedding in Honolulu, Hawaii. When speaking to the Catering Manager, Dora, she informed us of dates that were available for a range of guests. Since my family is is Maui and my husband's family is in Ohio, we really did not know how many were going to be RSVP'ing. We invited over 150 but said "who knows, it could be more or like less than 75 depending on who will be able to come." Even hopping from the island of Maui to Oahu, isn't cheap, and not everyone can afford the flight and hotels. So we booked the place, site unseen. I've seen pictures and all the spaces were beautiful, so I wasn't worried there. A couple months later, we flew to Hawaii for vacation and stopped at the Hale Koa to view the sites. They stuck is in a room that max capacity was like 75!!! Even though we told them that we could expect over 150! And the rooms were 4 separate rooms connected together in a long awkward rectangle with low ceilings. She then said, if we plan on having a photobooth, we lose a round table of 8 seats. If we plan on having a favor table, we lose another round table of 8. Just continuously cutting down our numbers. We were extremely unhappy and paid an extra $150 to switch the ballroom location to a bigger site with more flexibility. Moving forward a few months, we get to the details of the wedding, and mind you there are no printed RULES & REGULATIONS ANYWHERE. I am asking the millions of questions I can think of because whenever I think of something, she replies with a “No there are not a list of questions, rules, regulations we answer questions on a case by case scenario” This includes FEES! These were NOT discussed or signed for in ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. Fees like: Throwing petals=$100 clean up fee. Sparklers are not allowed (my sparklers). Ordering chairs to be delivered =$150 fee. How do you know what you can and cannot do, unless you think of it and ask? Then on the day of the rehearsal, no one was going to be available to walk us through. While going through the rehearsal, we were taking a bit longer, and I tried my best to rush everyone, but guess who showed up to the rehearsal, not to help us, but to tell us that there is a wedding later and they will be setting up and we needed to clear the garden for them. Wedding day comes along and things that we talked about and placed in the contract were not done. I told them to cut up all my cake and serve it and it was not, it was boxed. They placed table cloths down, even though they knew I had a rental company coming that would be dropping cloths. When the chair rental company came with extra chairs, they asked where they could possibly store it and the banquet captain said “idk just put it over there”. My uncle who is a banquet captain in a hotel in Maui, was appalled. He said he would never treat his clients this way, and that as a banquet captain, he expected to have things done as he would have done. I then told him it was a military hotel and that It was really cheap to book it and he said that that was probably why the service is mediocre. They are not here to appease to the clients, they act like it's more of a favor to us.
Other than that, the venue is beautiful, the private garden area was nice and serene for an intimate ceremony.
All I can say is amazing! We had our wedding ceremony at Maile Garden and Waikiki ballroom for reception. Working with Courtni and the entire team has been great. The staff were very friendly, polite, and helpful .
The food was unbelievable! I heard NO complaints and only compliments on how wonderful the meal was on that evening.
This hotel is simply wonderful, simple as that. Amazing people, great service and delicious food! Highly reccommended!
We stayed at the Hale Koa for our wedding night and it was amazing! The bedrooms are so nice, and the view from the lanai was beautiful! The giant banyan tree in the center of the lobby is gorgeous!
We had our daughter's wedding ceremony and reception at the Hale Koa hotel in May, 2018. The reception was in the Waikiki Ballroom. The one unusual aspect of the event was that we wanted an all-vegan reception. The catering manager, Dora, was helpful and accepted the challenge. This was the first time they did an all vegan reception, so she arranged a tasting of several items in the vegan menu that they proposed, including desserts, and we were impressed.
The ceremony at the gazebo in the Maile Garden was beautiful and the staff, both at the ceremony and reception were great. The vegan dinner was attractive and delicious! They even included non-alcoholic 'mocktails' in the drinks. We received positive comments from many of our vegan, vegetarian and non-vegetarian friends on how good the food was, including the vegan desserts. Kudos to Chef Andy and his crew!
If your family is vegetarian or vegan like us and you are looking for a wedding reception or other event, contact catering manager Dora. We were very happy with their service.
Beautiful venue, delicious food and amazing staff. Hale Koa was the perfect choice for our wedding!
Hale Koa was the first venue that we booked. We booked it because it was so beautiful and we heard that they had some amazing food! Our ceremony was at the Maile Garden with the gazebo and it was just the perfect setting. Our reception was done in the DeRussy Hall and that was the perfect room to hold all of our loved ones. We had so many compliments from our guests about our buffet that we served! Michele was amazing to work with. I had so many questions and she answered them and was very patient with me! The staff at Hale Koa was amazing as well!
Booking the Hale Koa was the best choice we made for our wedding. Having one vendor that took care of so many aspects of our wedding was great!!!
why do they keep non good customer service people around this is for military and yet a lot of people don't seem like they live their job. a lot of other places aren't for military are around the same prices are wayyyy nicer. but eh I booked here. because for wedding ceremonies and reception it was a good price. they don't really have customer service. especially checking in.
the lady who helped me look was RUDE on the phone.
seriously hire different staff who want a job!
while the process of planning/booking the venue, figuring out the menu, understanding all of the related costs was a MASSIVE headache which it did not need to be, I cannot deny that the banquet captain and her staff did a BEYOND incredible job caring for my guests. Everyone complimented the service, and the quality of the food. It just proved to me that the hotel NEEDS a dedicated events coordinator, as leaving all of event coordination to the catering manager doesn't account for several gaps which must be filled by the couple (Example: My mother had noticed the weekend prior to our wedding that the ladies' room was poorly tended during events. When she brought this up to the catering manager, she was told to go find the head of housekeeping which was no easy task. ANOTHER Example: When trying to book rooms for the evening of the wedding, my then fiancee and I were having much difficulty getting through, and were told by the catering manager "That's just how it is, nothing I can do to help.") The hotel is in DESPERATE need of an events coordinator, but does not have one.
Beautiful Venue and a memorable wedding for us.
The Hale Koa is a military hotel located on Waikiki beach. You will need to qualify or have a sponsor to reserve the ceremony and reception venue. The food is delicious and can be sampled at the Sunday Brunch. The catering staff, particularly Dora Young, is very knowledgeable and helpful! The staff is also flexible when it came to our needs and requests. The value is excellent and there is no tax (there is a service charge).
Hale Koa Hotel is an great place to have a wedding reception. The food was excellent and was very reasonable in price.
The staff kept the room clean and organized
We had our reception in the Kalia room. Everything turned out perfect. The food was delicious and the staff was wonderful. The hale koa catering dept made planning a destination wedding easy!
The Hale Koa was an awesome place for our wedding. For the location, price, and quality of the food (the buffet), you seriously can't beat it. Highly recommend it!
I had my wedding here and it was amazing. we got married on the beach and all our friends and family got to eat bbq afterwards. It was a low key wedding but it was so much fun and was great for all the kids being able to play in the sand and swim if they wanted to. Our room had a wonderful view of the water and great food. i was amazed.
Beautiful Gardens, close to Waikiki Beach, and lets not forget the Barefoot Bar. Fort DeRussey surrounds the Hotel and the Hilton Complex is next door. Check out the free firework show on Friday nights.
The staff was friendly and amazing. They helped us coordinate all the little details that really made it special. Thank you Casey for handling all our crazy questions and requests and thank you Julie for handling all the room details with such efficiency and humor.
I had both my ceremony and reception there and I was so happy with their service and the results. I had a wonderful catering service representative- Casey and she helped us with every step and detail. Everything with the hotel went perfectly on the wedding day. The banquet captain was also very good. The only negatives was that our room was very small so it couldn't hold our large wedding party. They have the best prices for great value.
Nothing can beat the Hale Koa's price and quality of food. Our guests were very happy with the buffet. The service could have been a little better, but overall we are very happy.
Casey Havre - Catering manager was always so helpful! She even let me ship my decorations to her and kept them, so that way I didn't have to travel with them! Everything was perfect! The cake - couldn't have been done better! Ceremony under the Maile Gazebo - most beautiful! Reception rooms - wonderful!!!!!! I wouldn't reccomend anywhere else in Honolulu!!!! And the total cost of the wedding venue- only $75!!!! Reception (less than 25 people) was about $1500!!!!
We had the brunch buffet, which was an exceptional value. The food was delicious and the presentation was beautiful. The only downside to this venue is the parking, which is across the street, and depending on who answered the phone in the catering department the service was so-so.
Overall, if you're looking for a great value this is the place to go as long as you have a sponsor.
We got married on November 11,2011 at the Hale Koa. We had 160 guest for the reception. The catering manager, Dora was on top of everything so that our wedding would run as smooth as possible. With APEC high security she was able to get all my vendors into the hotel. Dora was well organized and able to answer all of our questions.
The ceremony was held in their Maile Garden. It was convenient having both ceremony and reception all at the hotel. Between the ceremony and reception we were able to walk to the beach and take super wedding pictures. The value of the buffet dinner was unbelievable. We had the Aloha buffet and our guest loved it. There was something for everyone.
We stayed at the Hale Koa for a week when we got married. Our ceremony was on the North Shore and then we came back to a 50 person wedding reception. We ordered a traditional luau style meal and it wasn't very good. We were told that the meal came with fruit centerpieces. I thought, "wow great! now I don't have to come up with center pieces." I was wrong. The fruit centerpieces ended up being two pineapples in a Styrofoam bowl and a couple bananas.
We also arranged for a projector and screen to watch a slide show and an audio connection for our I-pod. The audio kept cutting in and out and it made for a distracting evening.
I would stay there again in a heartbeat, but I'll stay away from hosting an event there.
I stayed in the hotel and got ready there before the wedding. It was very pretty and convenient. They have a salon and florist in the hotel.
Hale Koa hotel was great. Very accommodating, friendly staff, great price and delicious food. Garden is perfect for the ceremony. Highly recommended.
The food was great! (Mostly from what I heard from the guest cause we never really got to eat too much) The staff was friendly and very helpful. They helped us set up the favors and other small stuff. The cake we ordered from them looks great! My only gripe is that the fountain in the cake that we paid for was not on for half the time in the reception. I had to flag down a server to get an extension to plug the fountain. Aside from that, everything was good. The place (De Russy Hall) was a little cramped with 320+ guests but it was fine.
I had my wedding in Hale Koa Hotel. The Ceremony place was great and the Food was so good. I had a lot of complements for their service and foods are excellent. Prices are reasonable.
Catering department was so helpful in helping us to plan our wedding day. Very professional!
My husband and I had our reception in the Hale Koa's Laulima Rooms 2,3,and 4. The rooms were perfect for our size wedding of 30 people. The hotel setting itself is gorgeous and our photographer loved being able to use the grounds as backdrops. All of the Hale Koa staff were great to work with and it was a great place to have a destination wedding!
Dora and everyone at the Hale Koa Hotel made the planning process so simple. They were always responsive to questions we had and we felt like they went that extra step to help make our day so special.
I was so happy with everything at Hale Koa. We had our wedding in the Luau Gardens and it was perfect! There is a stand alone bar, tiki torches, a stage, the food was great and the best part is the price! Of course you have to be military or sponsored but if you are I recommend. The staff (all of them from catering to bell persons) was great and helpful. The missing star is only because there are no suites only standard size rooms w/ different views but otherwise everything else about my wedding there was great!
The catering & banquet staff at the Hale Koa Hotel were AMAZING! My husband was not on-island while we were planning most of the planning, but he was able to communicate well with staff and be involved in the planning process. The staff were also so accommodating in allowing us to pre-set our event lighting and practice using the sound system.
The food was AMAZING! We went with the Aloha Buffet, which included a full dessert buffet. Our guests loved the food selections and were able to eat their fill!
Our reception was in the Banyan Tree Showroom, a two-level room with unusual-sized tables (most seating 4 or 6 guests). Although it was difficult to plan for the odd set-up, the decorations and seating chart ended up working well. It also afforded a large dance floor, which came in handy after the formal program had ended. :)
We arranged to have all of our decorations and supplies set-up by the banquet staff on the day of the wedding which reduced the amount of work and stress for the day. When I walked into the room I was utterly blown away by the beauty and the amazing set-up! The did a fantastic job!
Hale Koa Hotel has the best value for your money. The price of food and drinks is unbelievable. We also had so many compliments on the selection of foods. The hotel is located near the beach and very close to the Hilton (if you need more rooms for guests). Our reception was in the Derussy Hall and Bev was our coordinator for the evening. She was great! In the end, I was very pleased with the Hale Koa Hotel.
The setting was OK, no private room available. The buffet options were fine. I had a few vegetarians in my wedding party, and they were fed enough I think. I thought the cook-to-order chef for the seafood pasta was going to be the highlight, however, he tended to undercook all his seafood, whereas the squid or calamari and shrimp were still pretty clear indicating undercooked food. Very unappetizing, and most of the guests could not finish it.
I had my ceremony/reception there and have no complaints, they took care of everything, I had no worries. Food was good, price was right did not break the bank, and if you are military then this is the best choice by far!
I had my reception here. Great place, amazing food, great value!!
The price was right. The service and staff was outstanding before and up till the end of our reception. The food selection was out of this world. Everything was perfect. The beach was accessable from the venue. They also gave us a complementary ice carved sculpture to set out at our dessert table. Everyone loved our wedding and had commented that the food was out of this world, the company was fun, the drinks kept coming. It made planning everything so much more easier also taking into account you are planning other things aside from the reception. Beverly helped us out a lot and we have to say Thank You again for making our night all the more special!;Only thing is you need to be either a Military personnel or spouse etc. Otherwise there was nothing to complain about.
We had our reception at the Waikiki Ballroom at the Hale Koa Hotel (its one of the 4 venues on the hotel property). Ours had a built in bar, sound systems, they are known for their awesome food which everyone raved about. And price is way lower than the average hotels/reception venues in Hawaii, but you need to be sponsored to use the venue.;You must either be sponsored or a member of the US Military, Retired Military, Dept of Defense to qualify to use the property. Hale Koa does not have on-site coordinators only a catering department, so they will accomodate as best as they can to set up table decorations, but may require you to do the rest.
What we loved best about our reception venue was that it was right off of Waikiki beach. Since it is an Armed Forces Hotel it offered great discounts, no taxes, great food, and a beautiful venue.;Hale Koa is a resort serving members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families therefore only those who are active and or retired from Armed Forces can reserve rooms at the Hotel. All other guests have to reserve rooms at one of the many neighboring hotels.
It was in a convenient location and with amenities that were comprable and cheap for our guests. Also, the food was good and it was cheaper than the other hotels in Downtown Waikiki.
The location is a beach side bar, so a few days in advance I was able to get in contact with the wine and beverage manager and he was able to reserve enough tables for my guests with a great view of the ocean.
