Herzog jewelers easily exceeded -- really, blew away -- any expectations I could have had for a jewelry store when my fiancee and I set out to find a ring. We entered the store thinking that we were very much at the exploratory stage of the ring-buying process. My fiancee had a good idea of what she wanted, and while her idea was not especially complicated, it involved some unusual features. Our goal was just to see how different styles looked on my fiancee's hand and to find out whether her vision was feasible.
So shortly after we walked in, we met Susan. I can't say enough about how comfortable Susan made us feel during that first interaction. She got that we were just looking to try rings on and talk through some ideas. She answered all our questions cheerfully and without applying any pressure. In fact, Susan was so easy to talk to, that we quickly found ourselves describing to her the ring of my fiancee's dreams. Susan was a patient and enthusiastic listener, taking careful notes and quickly grasping what my fiancee was envisioning. Susan explained how the jeweler Herzog works with -- a guy in NYC who used to work for Cartier --could create the ring we wanted and assured us that the ring would be not only feasible but beautiful. Susan's understanding of what we wanted was so thorough and so obviously sincere, that we knew she meant it.
We decided that very day to move forward with Herzog. When we returned, we brought pictures of rings we liked to help illustrate my fiancee's idea. Again, Susan took copious notes on what we liked about the pictures. She then somehow communicated exactly what we wanted to the jeweler, who produced an amazingly life-like computer graphic showing exactly the ring we'd imagined. In the meantime, Susan had ordered several loose diamonds in the unusual shape my fiancee preferred (oval); there were several good options, and one absolutely stunning diamond, which we bought for an entirely fair price. (Note: Susan also explained that every diamond Herzog sells is subject to the Kimberley Process, which is supposed to ensure that the diamonds are conflict-free.)
Once we had selected the diamond and approved the design, the ring arrived in less than a week. At that point, Susan and Ted did some fancy footwork to get me the ring ASAP so that I could carry out a spontaneous surprise proposal before my fiancee even realized the ring was complete. It was touching to see how excited they were to help me pull off the proposal.
The ring was made exactly to our specifications, and my fiancee loved it (and said yes!). After having it on for a couple weeks, she did go back to ask Susan if they could make the tiniest tweak to the setting; Herzog did the tweak overnight and at no charge. We couldn't be happier with the final product! We also regularly receive compliments on the ring that go well beyond the obligatory. Several people have asked me where I got it.
We've been back to Herzog a couple times since the proposal to discuss wedding bands. Each visit has been a pleasure. Susan and Ted are so welcoming, so generous with their time, so fun to talk to, and so obviously expert in their craft. We think we've found a jeweler for life.
