About this vendor
Hotel Grinnell is an adaptive reuse of the old junior high school in downtown Grinnell. The building was erected in 1921 as an addition to the high school, with three stories of classrooms, a large gymnasium and an auditorium. After years of being widely underutilized, Steve Holtze and Angela Harrington purchased the beautiful building from the city in 2016 and have re-purposed it into a boutique hotel and event venue.
Forget the prom…you can be “Queen” of your wedding in the fabulously revitalized, gymnasium.
With its polished hardwood floor and original court markings, this is the ultimate update on the best night of your life. No chaperones needed.

I had my wedding here in 2019 and am included in the photos in their listing here. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to have everything in one place. My guests never had to drive anywhere since it was all at the hotel and they still tell me (nearly 3 years later) that it was such a luxury to not have to move venues. I had great communication with the staff and Angela was a lifesaver. We planned our wedding there from across the country and they did a great job guiding us through the process. This is also probably one of the most affordable places to get married these days (and we had 175 ish people) I can’t say enough good things about our experience. Over communicate when you’re planning your wedding, have check in calls, etc and you’ll be glad you stayed organized!
I had my wedding here back in January 2020. I booked the venue over a year out. After booking the venue I tried emailing them about details and setting up times to stop in and it took forever to get a response or I would have to resend emails again. In the time I booked it they went through 2 or 3 different event managers. A couple months out I got an invoice finally and they had us down for the WRONG WEDDING DAY! The day prior to our wedding we came in to decorate and found out the pent house heat was broken and were given two other regular rooms instead no other type of compensation. A week after the wedding we were told we would be receiving a refund check for over paying and were told they would mail it to us. We never received the check in the mail. I emailed them over and over again, half the time getting no response. Tried calling and get told who I need to talk to isn't there and was told I would get a call back, never got a call back ever. Now the last week of May I finally wrote an email including the hotel manager and was finally responded to by her and the event manager. They sent me a picture of the carbon copy of the check to "Prove" they mailed it. They told me they sent out a check way back when but we never received it and so they emailed me saying they sent out another one on May 13th and I should receive it no later then Friday, May 28th...It does not take that long for a check to go through the mail (Grinnell to Ames). We did get the check today, Friday May 28. The check was short the amount we were told we would be getting back but I am at my point and no longer want to deal with this venue or owner again. The check was post marked the 26th which is the day I emailed the manager and the staff. So Im pretty sure I was lied to about them mailing it to me on the 13th. I also got a rude response from the manager about me asking for money during this pandemic and how they aren't as busy right now due to it and she had to "dip" into her own personal funds to take of this for us. And made a remark that since I am asking for my money they own me that I must be going through hard times too. It should of been taken care of back in end of January/ early February. Overall the communication between staff to the guests is horrible and being lied to isn't a great feeling after I spent a lot of money to have my special day at there venue. This whole experience after words has added a bad memory to my wedding.
Hotel Grinnell was an excellent venue for our daughter’s wedding in September 2019. This unique boutique hotel recently opened in an old school in downtown Grinnell and is truly a special place!
The original plan for an outdoor ceremony in nearby Central Park was spoiled by Mother Nature, but the hotel staff went above and beyond to help us move the ceremony into the hotel’s auditorium.
The ballroom was a terrific reception venue and the unique bunk rooms were enjoyed by the bridal party. So many of our friends and family raved about the wonderful food, fantastic staff, unique hotel rooms and terrific patio space.
This hotel is truly a wonderful asset to the Grinnell community and we hope to enjoy many other special events in this beautiful venue.
Definitely a special venue in Grinnell, Ia! We were so excited to host our wedding in a unique space in this small town. All of the local vendors were great, and the HG staff was very helpful. The rooms were very comfortable, and the space worked well for our guests. We started planning very early on in the opening months of the hotel, and did stumble with some staff turnover and lost conversations, but the staff worked with us so everyone was on the same page in the end. We were very pleased with how everything turned out!
We had an amazing wedding. Angela and the staff went above and beyond my needs. Our guests have been talking about the wedding and venue for the past 2 weeks post wedding. I highly recommend Hotel Grinnell. All my vendors were local as well. U wouldn't change one thing. My day was stress free and perfect. Thank you again.
We had our wedding and reception at Hotel Grinnell. Everything went very well. We originally planned on an outdoor wedding across the street at the park and then changed to their patio space. However, the weather had a different plan. We had about 250-300 people come and ended up having the ceremony in the ballroom where we'd set up tables. It was a little tight for what I imagined, but it worked out just perfectly. Our guests sat at the tables and our immediate family sat in the two sets of two rows at the front. Once the ceremony was over, the head table was set up. After dinner, a couple of the empty tables were taken down for the dance floor. Great sound, lighting was a little off for my photographer so she set up a "flash" light. Attendees pictures turned out great as well so really no issues. As their first wedding, everything went off without a hitch. Bridal suite was done just in time so that's a nice added touch and somewhere to get ready. Groom room was another room was another room we'd booked on the first floor for family to stay in. Another great touch was to have one of the bunk rooms. My flower girls got ready in there and it was nice to have that as a space the kids could go lay down if it got too late in the night.
