Layers did an incredible job with our wedding desserts, creating a delicious set of cupcakes and a beautiful single-tiered cake. They even incorporated flowers from our florist, adding a lovely touch to the presentation. The desserts were not only visually stunning but also incredibly yummy. The team was easy to work with, and their pricing was very reasonable. I highly recommend Layers for their excellent service and delectable treats.
We ordered a two tier cake + a sheet cake for our wedding. The cake was delicious and everyone who tried it, loved it.
For the two tier cake, I requested plain white and it was PERFECT. I wasn't expecting much, but was so in love with how it turned out.
They offered a cake tasting box so we were able to taste each of the flavor options which was so helpful in picking our cake flavor.
The booking process was easy and they delivered it to our venue on the day of. It was a simple process and was very happy with everything.
We ordered a 2-tiered naked cake (death by chocolate), red velvet cupcakes, vanilla cupcakes with fresh chocolate covered strawberries, and some gluten-free cupcakes for the wedding. Layers will decorate your cake with fresh flowers if you bring them in the day before (and they decorate them beautifully). Because our venue was in the neighborhood, they also handled delivery for us at no extra cost.
We received comments from our guests that this was the best wedding cake they had. We had almost the whole bottom layer leftover (even though I ordered for 50 servings for a ~90 person wedding!) and a good amount of cupcakes, so we took them home. I had friends asking me for leftover servings of the cake and cupcakes since some of them knew I had portioned them out and put them in my freezer. They held really well and we are bummed to say we have finally worked through all of the leftovers.
Their sponge was very moist and their ganache was light and smooth. Those red velvet cupcakes were so incredibly delicious as well. We will have to make it a habit to pick up a few sweets whenever we visit Monterey now.
We wanted a very simple two-tier cake for our wedding, and were happy with Layers came up with for us! They did the exact design we asked and even worked with us to incorporate flavors of two separate cakes we couldn't decide between into one. Everyone loved the cake, and we can't wait to take the top tier out of the freezer to dig into next year!
My Husband and I knew we wanted a carrot cake for our wedding. Layers was able to create an amazing and beautiful naked carrot cake decorated with flowers from our florest! Everyone at the wedding commented about how great the cake was!
Budget friendly and delicious gourmet baked goods! My husband and I chose this vendor because of their great reviews. We decided to go with a small cake and cupcakes. They had a great assortment of cupcakes to choose from as well as frosting options.
I chose Layers to do my wedding cake a few weekends ago and could not be happier! Hilary and Hazel were so amazing to work with. They were very responsive and made the whole process super easy!
We chose the carrot cake and our guests loved it! We also got chocolate cupcakes for our more picky guests and those were a hit as well.
Our cake was amazing and delicious. So delicious, that we couldn't bring ourselves to save the top in the freezer for our one year anniversary! We are so happy we chose Layers!
This bakery was on several of our preferred vendor lists (for our wedding), so we contacted them for a tasting. Instead of sitting down for a tasting, they offer a "tasting box" for $15...ok, that's fine. We picked up our tasting box on a Saturday and took it back to our hotel room. We were SUPER excited to taste all of the different flavors. We got to our hotel room (after driving 30 minutes from the bakery) and immediately dug into the pieces of cake. They were absolutely terrible! They had clearly been frozen for several days and even tasted like freezer. They were soggy in the middle (not moist like yummy cake is) and the frosting was ridiculously thick. We called the bakery to let them know (just to make sure that we weren't crazy), and they basically said that we could come by to get a new tasting box. What difference is a new box going to make? They are obviously all made super far in advance, put in the freezer, and then somewhat thawed out before being picked up. The staff of course denied that they were frozen and told us that they inject a syrup into the cake to keep it "moist" (ummm sorry, but they were soggy, not moist). Needless to say, we were very disappointed and don't want anyone else to waste their time or money on this place. Fortunately we had this experience several months before our wedding and are able to go elsewhere!
We ordered our wedding cake and groom's cake(s) from here. First, the look. The wedding cake was beautiful - exactly what we had asked for. Even the cupcakes and pineapple upside down cake (for the groom's cake [bar]) looked amazing.
FYI. They don't have pedestals for cakes or cupcakes to rent but they can refer to a great place that does rent them for a reasonable price.
The taste. MMMMMMM... The wedding cake tasted so fresh and great. We choose the white cake with raspberry filling. Everyone enjoyed it. I didn't have any of the groom's cake but I was told it was spectacular.
They did a great job baking our wedding cake. I only wish wedding cakes didn't have to cost so much! Still an excellent bakery, though.
We chose layers for our wedding cake...
The cake looked absolutely gorgeous and everyone thought the cake tasted wonderfully! We received many compliments on how great the cake was...
The only downfall to our experience was that 2 out of the 3 layers were incorrect... The layer we cut into and fed to each other was not even correct which was a total bummer for us since we were so excited for our cake...
I asked that they make us a replacement cake topper for our 1 year anniversary for the inconvenience and they said they would...
The quality of the cake was great! The bummer was that we only received 1 layer out of 3 that correct.
We ordered our wedding cake from Layers Sensational Cakes in Monterey, ca for our wedding in August 2010. They did a fantastic job starting from our very first tasting appointment. We were able to choose just the right cake for our special day. The cake arrived on time and allowed our florist to decorate the cake with additional flowers. If you are getting married in the Monterey area definitely give Layers a call.
All of our guests loved the cake and enjoyed it as much as we did.
My husband and I ordered a mini cake from them the following year for Valentines Day and it was just as good as it was on our wedding day.
I used layers for my June 6 wedding - I wanted two different ideas - sent them the pictures and they blended them together to create something new and JUST PERFECT. I wasn't able to do a tasting but they recommended three flavors and they were TO DIE FOR!
WOW! All I can say is GREAT! They were helpful and nice, and they made the most delicious cake I have ever had in my life! Everyone commented on how amazing the cake was and asked if they could go back for 3rds and 4ths!
The cake was delicious. We didn't have a traditional wedding cake since we opted to give the guests brownies and cookies. Our cake was a simple red velvet with polkadot pattern. It was exactly what we were looking for.
My only complaint is that the wedding cake baker was awful at returning calls. You have to bug her a lot if you are not able to just drive there and talk in person!!
I didn't interact with these folks much, as my sister-in-law got us the cake as a present. However, the cake was gorgeous and delicious.
Delicious Cake, awesome service and the cake was exactly how I imagined it!
The cake I ordered for my wedding was beautiful, delivered in a timely manner, and I got a ton of complements on the taste. If my experience was one of one of my guests I would have given them a 5 star rating, however their sampling and customer service were severely lacking.
The women in the bakery/ coffee shop were excellent, however the owner made us feel pretty insignificant. I set up a cake tasting with my mom and sister, paid my $25 (which I still feel is silly), and headed down. We were greeted by an young woman and were asked to take a seat...where we sat twiddling our thumbs for 20 minutes waiting for the owner to take us next door to the "wedding" area. We were given a book and a lap top with photos of previous work and left alone. About 30 minutes later the owner came back with our samples.
I was a little upset for the following reasons.
1)I did not get to pick the flavors being sampled. I hate carrot cake!!! Why is that even offered?
2) the samples were clearly frozen and not fresh. I understand that you can't bake a new cake for every client, but for $25 can I please get something that taste like it didn't come from the back of the freezer?
3) we were given Dixie cups and small bottles of warm water to split. I was hoping for coffee...it is a coffee shop and I did just pay $25 to sample.
4) When I wanted to discuss ideas for something different the owner kept pointing me back to the existing designs. She made me feel as though some of my ideas were passe and silly.
5) the red velvet was horrid. I always use red velvet to judge a bakery and they did not pass.
6) Communication is horrible. You call and are told there is no one available to speak with you. You email and you get an automated response that someone will get back to you in a few days. This was an issue when I ordered a cake to feed 150 and they sent an invoice for a cake to feed 75. It took over a week to resolve the issue and I was made to feel that it was my error and not theirs.... I think i know how many people were coming to my wedding. Had Layers not been the approved vendor for my site I would not have used them at all, but it was them or pay a cake cutting fee.
I want to say again that the cake was beautiful and tasted great. Layers just really needs to step up the customer service.
i was not impressed at all with the cake and expected a much more professional look for $600.00 I really felt it the appearance looked like something I could have made at home. Also the flavor was far from what I choose at my cake tasting. I was not satisfied with this vendor.
My husband and I were very pleased working with Layers. We had a white cake with raspberry filling and butter cream frosting and a chocolate cake with butter cream frosting. Both cakes looked phenomenal. However, we were not happy with the texture and flavor of the cakes and frosting. The price was priced well and the presentation was great, we just wished the cake could have tasted better.
I loved Layers from the start: our cake tasting was so much fun (like a little party) and everyone was very friendly and helpful. We brought a photo of an elaborately-designed cake and they did a great job emulating it. It was not only gorgeous, but tasted wonderful and received so many compliments. We loved this bakery.
The cake, babycakes and cupcakes that we ordered were beautiful and tasted great. The service, however, was not great. We had a destination wedding in Monterey and we flew in for one weekend to plan everything. Had to call/email several times to set up a tasting and discuss options for my wedding. We ended up setting up a tasting and we showed up and the person that was supposed to do the tasting with us was ill and not at work. We did not receive a call in advance to let us know of the cancellation. It would have been nice to receive a follow-up call with an apology and to see if we had any questions. The person that we worked with didn't seem like they cared about us very much. I thought the prices were reasonable and the product received much praise from our guests. Use this client if you would like a great product and don't mind not feeling like a priority.
Great taste! The cake looked amazing and tasted amazing.
Everyone loved the cake and said it was the best they had ever had! I will be purchasing all of our cakes from now on from Layers!
This is a 2-part review.
1. I am got married nearby and this bakery is one of the few in town. I called to set up a tasting and was informed they don't do that. What they do instead is have you arrange to come to the store and pick up a box of sample cakes from their freezer. Because the store isn't very large, you're encouraged to go elsewhere to try them. What in the world? It's a strange concept and makes me think they know how bad their cakes are. A few were average, but a few were just gross. The buttercream is too sweet, even for me, Ms. Sweettooth. The princess cake was straight up disgusting, and their fondant was sub-par (I know fondant is gross, but this was exceptionally gross). I knew immediately this wasn't the bakery for me. Poor customer service + less than delicious cakes = no business. I believe they know how bad they are because they didn't even bother to make a follow up call to see how I liked everything and schedule a consultation. I'm guessing they don't get many takers.
2. Despite my experience looking for a wedding cake, I decided to give them a second shot. I decided to do a surprise groom's cake for the rehearsal dinner. I emailed and heard nothing. A week later I called and was informed they don't respond to that type of inquiry by email. Seriously? Then why is it listed on your website? And why didn't you call me when I expressed interest? I told her what I wanted and she asked if they were doing our wedding cake. No. Her response, "Oh well then I don't think we will be able to do that. We get too busy with other carved cake orders" WHAT? I'm booking FIVE months out and you have nothing else on that date. Why shouldn't I get priority? So I suggested that we just call it a birthday cake and she give me pricing. She wasn't keen on that. I told her I could just call back in a few weeks asking for a birthday cake and she said she's the only one who answers the phones and would remember me. I'm sorry, am I missing something? I'm trying to give you business, 5 months in advance, and it's not good enough for you? What happens if you don't get a reservation for that day? Then you're just out the money I would have spent.
It's mind blowing that they have the audacity to be so elitist about which cake orders to accept when their cakes just aren't that good.
If you're looking for something truly spectacular, go to The Buttery in Santa Cruz. Don't waste your time with these idiots.
My wedding cake was breathtaking. They went off a picture that I brought in and they still customized it further. They did a smooth fondant layer, then a "lace" fondant layer on top of the first. We provided a rhinestone wrap for each layer from Micheal's because their is some law that can't provide things that aren't edible for the cake. We had 2 chocolate tiers and 2 lemon cake tiers and they were both divine!
Layers created such a beautiful and delicious cake for us. They gave us exactly what we asked for and it came out perfect. They had tons of flavor to choose from and they are reasonably priced.
I heard many great comments about this vendor and when I visited them, their products were very tasty. However, the day before my wedding, my bridesmaid picked up the cake and called me with great dissapointment as the cake design looked absolutely NOTHING like I has gone over with the owner. I provided color samples and our invitation that had the design, but sadly, the cake looked like a 1st grader scribbled purple markers on it.
Since this was the day before my wedding, I had no choice but to use it and they did provide some sugar flowers to try and hide the hideous mistake. When I called them a few days after my wedding, the owner was not apologetic in the slightest and did not offer any type of refund because as she said "well, you did eat it, didn't you?" Again, what other choice did she leave me but to use that catastrophy.
I do have to give them 4 stars for taste of the cake, but 0 star for customery service and attention to customer requests.
We had the lemon cake with lemon curd filling and white chocolate frosting. Everyone loved the cake, even people who normally don't like sweets.
The cake looked amazing and was delicious
We scheduled an appointment for a cake tasting, showed up on time, checked in at the counter, and ended up waiting nearly 45 minutes for someone to help us! I actually had to go back up to the counter again and ask if we had mistaken our appointment time. Turns out the girl working the counter forgot about us. Well, they were nice enough to offer a discount on our cake after that mess. Their cake is delicious!!! The guy who did the tasting with us was very professional and friendly. So that totally made up for the mistake. And in the end our wedding cake was wonderful and tasty! I will say though, that I had to call them a few times to make some changes and every time was a horrible experience. They accidentally hung up on me twice, another time I was on hold for over 5 minutes, I always felt rushed, and they were never friendly towards me on the phone. They ended up overcharging me too.
layers was amazing! they even put in special support for our custom cake topper!
Layers delivered a great tasting and great looking product! I changed my design twice and everytime, they were very flexible and awesome to work with. They are very easy to work with and their process worked smoothly! I highly recommend Layers Sensational Cakes and am planning to go back to them for an upcoming birthday party!
I have been getting cakes from Layers for over ten years and have always known that they would make my wedding cake, so when the time came I was so excited to pick everything out! We decided to go with cupcakes and a cake topper and they were very reasonably priced and so good as well as beautiful. I took one start away though for the simple fact that I felt like I had to chase someone down in order to get answers to questions I had and being a bride only 2.5 weeks away from the wedding and having to call back three times before I could get a confirmation can be a little worrisome. However I would still recommend them to any bride but just be ready to stay on top of them.
I did not directly work with this vendor, my wedding coordinator took care of it. I did have a beautiful delicious cake from them however. I would recommend the champagne cake
Had a great time with them tasting cake samples and going over the order. Very friendly and helpful staff. Talked to them about what I wanted and how I envisioned my cake. And they created the perfect cake. Exactlly what I wanted and better than I imagined. And delicious too!
This has to be the most delicious cake I've ever eaten! And they made it exactly as I wanted--all chocolate inside and out with red polka dots, Absolutely darling and people that dont even like cake were scarfing it down. Well worth the price!!
