This is a 2-part review.
1. I am got married nearby and this bakery is one of the few in town. I called to set up a tasting and was informed they don't do that. What they do instead is have you arrange to come to the store and pick up a box of... sample cakes from their freezer. Because the store isn't very large, you're encouraged to go elsewhere to try them. What in the world? It's a strange concept and makes me think they know how bad their cakes are. A few were average, but a few were just gross. The buttercream is too sweet, even for me, Ms. Sweettooth. The princess cake was straight up disgusting, and their fondant was sub-par (I know fondant is gross, but this was exceptionally gross). I knew immediately this wasn't the bakery for me. Poor customer service + less than delicious cakes = no business. I believe they know how bad they are because they didn't even bother to make a follow up call to see how I liked everything and schedule a consultation. I'm guessing they don't get many takers.
2. Despite my experience looking for a wedding cake, I decided to give them a second shot. I decided to do a surprise groom's cake for the rehearsal dinner. I emailed and heard nothing. A week later I called and was informed they don't respond to that type of inquiry by email. Seriously? Then why is it listed on your website? And why didn't you call me when I expressed interest? I told her what I wanted and she asked if they were doing our wedding cake. No. Her response, "Oh well then I don't think we will be able to do that. We get too busy with other carved cake orders" WHAT? I'm booking FIVE months out and you have nothing else on that date. Why shouldn't I get priority? So I suggested that we just call it a birthday cake and she give me pricing. She wasn't keen on that. I told her I could just call back in a few weeks asking for a birthday cake and she said she's the only one who answers the phones and would remember me. I'm sorry, am I missing something? I'm trying to give you business, 5 months in advance, and it's not good enough for you? What happens if you don't get a reservation for that day? Then you're just out the money I would have spent.
It's mind blowing that they have the audacity to be so elitist about which cake orders to accept when their cakes just aren't that good.
If you're looking for something truly spectacular, go to The Buttery in Santa Cruz. Don't waste your time with these idiots.
