The Inside Scoop
FROM THE KNOT EDITORS
The First Look
Located in the heart of East Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Multicultural Arts Center is a facility dedicated to diversity, culture and self-expression. The Arts Center boasts a beautiful red brick exterior, while the inside plays host to a number of inspiring spaces such as a dazzling theater and two art galleries. There’s also a secluded outdoor courtyard that's complemented by mature trees and landscaped gardens, which is an intimate spot for an outdoor wedding ceremony in the big city. The facility can host elegant indoor receptions as well, giving couples a chance to have a unique celebration their guests will remember.
The Centanni Courtyard. An intricate brick path leads to the main courtyard in this serene spot. Couples exchange vows on level ground in front of their guests, who are seated in white lawn chairs. Curved porticoes can serve as an altar, where couples can hang items such as flowers and lace, giving ceremonies a personalized touch.
The Upper Gallery. Hanging upon crisp white walls, the gallery’s paintings, collages and photographs can serve as fascinating talking points during a cocktail hour following the ceremony.
The Theater. With high ceilings and an upper-level balcony,, this room is an idyllic place for an intimate sit-down reception dinner. Both long banquet tables and circular tables look stunning in this space, which has high windows on the upper and lower levels. The theater's natural acoustics make it a great place for live musicians to set up for an evening of dining and dancing.
What You Should Know
When couples rent the Multicultural Arts Center, they enjoy exclusive access to the entire facility. This includes use of the theater, the upper and lower galleries, the kitchen, green room and outdoor courtyard. There is an additional permit fee required for the courtyard, however. Weekend rentals consist of eight hours, which include two hours for setting up an event and one hour for cleaning up. Weekday rentals are based on a per-hour system and require a six-hour minimum.
Catering is not included with the rental of the facility. The Arts Center provides a list of preferred vendors that couples can choose from. Couples aren't permitted to use a catering service that is not already on the approved caterers list. Tables and chairs are not normally included in the rental fee. However, the Center does occasionally offer dates including tables and chairs. The Center posts information about such special dates on its website. In all other cases, the fee for tables and chairs is determined on a per-unit basis and units range in price depending on the size and type of the tables requested.
No helium balloons or open flames are allowed anywhere in the facility and aspiring artists can't hang their own artwork or decorations in the gallery during an event. The Arts Center does not rent out display space in the galleries.
The Multicultural Arts Center offers a lot of enticing extras that couples can add to their event to give it a little more pizzazz. Some of these extra perks include:
- Baby grand piano
- Professional stage for bands or performances
- Projection screens and projectors
- In-house lighting

Beautiful VenueReviewed on 4/24/2013 Meredith G
I was set on finding an art related setting (museum etc.) with potential for an outdoor ceremony close to downtown Boston for my wedding. The Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center was exactly what I was looking for. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw pictures of the ceiling. I began working with Amanda, who was very helpful and informative. About four months before my wedding, Amanda left and Nicole took over. The staff transition was seamless. I understand that the position has changed and Nicole works part time ~which meant she wasn't able to get back to emails quite as quickly, but all of this was communicated to me before I was left wondering and there were no issues or problems at all. Jeff was the staff on site for the day of the event. He was so great and kept everything running smoothly. One super helpful detail about the CMAC is that right now they only allow one event per weekend, which meant we could drop off decorations etc. the day before during the rehearsal and pick them up the following Monday. I am so happy we found the CMAC it is a beautiful and unique site, with professional and friendly staff.

Very affordable, super elegant without being over the top, beautiful building and grounds, really friendly and accommodating staff...we couldn't have been happier with the place we picked for our big day, it was perfect!

I am so happy we chose the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center (CMAC) for our wedding ceremony and reception venue. We worked with Amanda and Tori (now since departed) for the planning and set-up and with Jeff who was on-site on the wedding day itself. They were complete professionals and made the rental and planning experience very easy. Jeff coordinated with our band and DJ and helped them set up for an amazing night of music and dancing. The site speaks for itself – its gorgeous. We got married outside in Centanni Way Park surrounded by historic, brick buildings. The ceiling in the theater space is breathtaking and our entrance down the stairway inside was unforgettable. We used the upstairs gallery for our cocktail hour. The variety of spaces and sites all within the CMAC was really appealing to us and made for an unforgettable event.
What a beautiful place to hold a wedding reception! The breathtaking ceiling and laid back vibe work extremely together. The team at the CMAC was very helpful and worked directly with our preferred caterer as needed. We would recommend this facility to hold your reception for 140 people or under. Thank you for all your help CMAC in making our dream day come true!
Our wedding at the Multicultural Arts Center was fantastic--both we and our guests adored the space, inside and out. The high ceilings and molding were especially impressive and we loved having both the large room and the upper gallery for our guests to mingle. The site was really responsive, allowing us to drop off decor and other items the day before and scheduling a second tour for us after booking in order for us to show our parents the venue.
Absolutely stunning!Reviewed on 12/27/2012 michelle e
I couldn't have been more satisfied with this venue. Amanda is wonderful and so helpful with her knowledge of the venue. I was looking for a venue that was not your typical hall or hotel and the CMAC was so historically beautiful and the grand room with its high ceilings was the perfect reception option.
Review for Cambridge Multicultural Arts CenterReviewed on 9/05/2008 Betsy R
CMAC is an unusual space that's got modern art in a traditional Cambridge locale. The theater space has a beautiful ceiling and decorations and the art galleries were great for the bar. Plus the kids could run around in the courtyard outside. People couldn't stop raving about it.;We chose to use an iPod rather than a DJ and the timing with the site manager was a little rough. I wish we had been able to meet with him in person but as our contact person was different the communication got a little messy.
