So here is the full story on New York Jewelers. My husband purchased my engagement ring and wedding band in May of 2016. Within a year my ring began literally falling apart, we brought it in to be fixed because it basically bent in half and a diamond on the side fell off. At that time we also paid to have my band and engagement ring fused together, as a suggestion from New York Jewelers themselves in order to strengthen the ring. We PAID for the rings to be fused together AS WELL AS the repairs. Not long after that I noticed the ring had shifted and the halo looked like it was bent, and yet another diamond on the band had falling off. So we came back again to address the issue, this time we were told there’s no problem with the ring, and it was handed back to us all shined up. As time went on I noticed this more and more and decided to get another opinion from a reputable jeweler, who looked at the ring and told me not to wear the ring because I was close to losing my diamond. After hearing this alarming information, I then proceeded to bring the ring to THREE other jewelers who ALL told me the same exact thing. Two different jewelers even told me how they’ve had OTHER customers from New York Jewelers with similar issues, they also explained to me how New York Jewelers has their rings made in China, and they also sell used items, they suggested I bring my ring back to New York Jewelers and speak to them because they sold my husband a faulty ring. So that’s what we did. That’s when the nightmare began starting with the run around by Darryl the “manufacturing manager” who again tried saying nothing was wrong with the ring (until we literally had to show him ourselves), to him lying and saying he was going to “help us” with the ring problem, to not calling me when he said he would, to the salesman going through our information on file and CALLING the person who recommended us to New York Jewelers to gain information on my husband and I, to Steve Rubenstien another “manager” calling me up today, accusing me of having work done at other jewelers, (referencing having my engagement ring and wedding band soldered together) besides New York jewelers (they forgot to document this in their system, so I had to laugh at that statement because I have ALL the documentation and receipts of every last bit of work done at NYJ, including photos of my ring each instance it fell apart) to telling me he wants no relationship with me because we haven’t purchased any other jewelers from them in the last 3 years— basically saying since we only bought one item they could care less about us as customers. These people literally ripped my husband off, lied to us both, screamed at me on the phone, and refused to fix or replace my ring. Do yourselves a favor and avoid this place at all costs. There are so many other reputable jewelers out there who actually care about their customers and quality of jewelry they sell. Maybe if New York jewelers sold us quality jewelry, and had decent customer service we would have purchased more items from them, but since we didn’t do so, that’s their reasoning and excuse for not taking care of the mess they created. Steve was so unprofessional and disgusting to deal with, I would be ashamed of myself if I were him. After he scolded me for leaving a negative review on Facebook, I asked him- What would you do if you were in my shoes? Or if this was your son or daughter in my position? He didn’t have an answer for me. Shameful.
Great and very helpful staff. We never felt pressured into making any purchases and we were never "up sold" on anything. Thanks for a smooth process! I recommend fully!
6 out of 5 overall!
The staff at New York Jewelers are unbelievably patient, helpful, honest, and don't try to push you into anything you aren't sure about.
I originally went there to pick out my wife's engagement ring. I went twice...maybe three times...and spent time after their closing hours because I was making up my mind. They insisted on me staying until I was satisfied. I never felt rushed or pushed into anything. This might be because they don't make commission, but are instead on contracts. Therefore, the salesmen there felt no need to "make the sale." This made the service particularly impressive because they help you no matter what, whether or not you end up with anything. They go above and beyond just as part of their customer service.
They have the largest selection of diamonds out of anyone in Chicago. They also have a huge array of settings and they make them all in-house.
It was a no-brainer to go back there when we decided to pick out our wedding bands. We made an appointment, and I had a particularly hard time deciding what I wanted for myself. They gave me their honest opinions and we were able to settle on something that I love.
Also, after checking out several places before here, I loved that they do everything in-house (making the rings, placing the settings, cleaning the rings/jewelry, and more). Other places talked about selling the diamonds and/or settings and then said they would pass the ring on to other stores/companies to size it, clean it, or whatever else. I found this uncomfortable for jewelry as expensive and important as engagement and wedding rings because it would be going to all these other people/stores I didn't know, passing through many more hands than I'd like.
Thank you, New York Jewelers!
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. They were so awful to us and absolutely ruined our engagement. My now-husband and I went to NYJ when we were looking at rings, and ended up choosing the option to have them remake a copy of a vintage ring I really loved. Everything seemed fine.
Flash forward a few weeks - I've been proposed to with the ring. A day or two later, I was looking at it in a bright sunny environment, and noticed a small, black spot along one of the ridges. I thought it was dirt, so tried to pick it out, and then tried using a cleaning solution - nothing. We took it into NYJ and they flat out denied that there was any sort of visible spot AT ALL. Literally, refused. They insisted they saw no black spot and the ring was flawless. No matter how many times my husband or I pointed it out, they just refused to acknowledge that it was there.
One of the technicians screamed at me in front of other customers. He said I was "disturbed" and was making a huge show for the attention. He repeatedly insinuated that I was "crazy, insane, and unbalanced" and even said to my husband "Are you sure you want to marry THAT?" At one point, they snatched the ring from me and just started processing a return. When I told him that's not what we wanted, he snapped "well what DO you want?" When I replied "fix the ring" he laughed in my face and said I was delusional. He then had security kick us out of the store, and told us he would call the police if we returned. It was utterly humiliating.
So here's the funny part. We took it to one of their competitors down the street. I explained the issue, and handed her the ring without pointing out the black spot. She noticed it IMMEDIATELY and said it was absolutely there. They did not have much equipment to further investigate, but she confirmed for me the spot was there.
We took it to another store that had a backlit 10x magnifying glass. After a mere five seconds of looking at it on this machine, the jeweler exclaimed "well it's right there, it's a hole, plain as day!" He even let me look at it on the magnifier. Lo and behold, there was a small hole from an air bubble right on the ridge of my ring. The light was shining right through it and it was blatantly obvious that it was a hole. The other jeweler fixed it in a mere 20 minutes and everything was fine.
DO NOT GO HERE. They make faulty jewelry and then will not stand behind their custom work. Additionally, they harass and scream at customers. To comment that a customer is "unbalanced and delusional" is so wildly inappropriate and absolutely disgusting.
Their competitors have all LOVED hearing this story and are shocked that such an apparently reputable store would treat customers this way.
We went to the Goldsmith Ltd for our wedding bands and had the most wonderful service. Go there instead.
NYJ is a place to go for your rings and jewelries. They have a lot of choices and they helped you design your own ring. The staff are patient and easy to work with. I am happy I went with them. I definitely highly recommend them for you to check out. On the side note, for those brides, grooms and all wedding party members who want to lose weight and look their best during the wedding day , I did the 30 day challenge with money back guarantee and I lost 20 lbs in the program. If you want to do it I encouraged you to contact iliah06@yahoo.com. She will help you just like how she helped me.
We got my engagement ring and wedding ring, as well as my husband's wedding band, from New York Jewelers. There were many choices of settings and diamonds, so we were able to find something that we really liked together. We went at a time when there was a lot of construction on Wabash, so were able to get the rings at a great price. The staff was very helpful and explained to us what things to take into consideration, and it was nice to be able to go in a quiet back room and make a decision in a more relaxed area.
My husband and I purchased all of our rings at New York Jewelers and we were extremely happy with the customer service. Mark helped us create the perfect engagement ring and kept us right within our budget! He also helped us pick out beautiful wedding bands for each of us. Looking forward to going back for an anniversary band and any other jewelry needs we might have!
I had never researched or looked into diamond engagements rings until I knew that we were going to get married. I was lost when it came to diamonds. I knew that I didn't want a huge, gaudy or low grade diamond. I wanted quality. I started researching and doing my due diligence. My engagement ring was a symbol of our love, commitment and an investment. Prospective bride and grooms, there is a most definite difference in diamonds and where you shop for your diamonds. I walked into New York Jewelers thinking I knew enough about diamonds (hah) and left educated on diamonds. The whole experience was a memorable one. First of all, we walked into an exclusive area. It was a secured area, away from the showroom. You are able to talk with privacy. Simon was fantastic!!!! He asked me what I wanted: cut, color, carat, and clarity. He then asked my sweetheart for the budget. Simon was able to find the perfect diamond for me. It is a gorgeous stunner. Out in the sun or in a lit room, the brilliance of the diamond shows. Everyday I look at my engagement in awe. It's gorgeous. I almost think it's fake, except we have the GIA certified certificate. Simon found my diamond within budget that my sweetheart upgraded my band to a platinum one. Thank you Simon! For the discerning future bride and groom, New York Jewelers is the place to go.
Scott and Darrell were great to work with. They helped my husband design a beautiful yellow diamond engagement ring, and they worked with me multiple times to find the perfect coordinating band. I really appreciated their service, and I would highly recommend asking for Scott or Darrell by name.
The best selection of all the jewelers we stopped in to see in the jewelry district! Friendly salespeople too, who are really reasonable about negotiating their initially-insane prices. My mom found her mother-of-the-bride jewelry for my wedding-- a really unique piece unlike anything we saw anywhere else. If I were directing friends where to shop for engagement rings/wedding bands/any really special jewelry, this would probably be first on the list!
NY Jewelers has been fabulous to work with, my husband went there to buy my engagement ring and so naturally we went back for our wedding bands. Each time we worked with Phil, who made the whole process extremely easy, and such a nice and friendly guy to do business with. I would definitely recommend going here for ring purchases!
We went to NYJ because my brother had gone here and they had good reviews online. Not only were the reviews accurate but they went above and beyond to meet out needs for engagement rings and wedding bands. We worked with Dave and because he knew what he was doing and was very honest and welcoming, we went here to make our purchases. I went back to get my now husband a watch for his gift because I love working with this company! Highly recommended!
Most of our family had gone to NY Jewelers for their engagement and wedding needs, so we decided to give them a try. After visiting several jewelers, we were sold! The selection was amazing and the service was top-notch. Barry had amazing recommendations and helped my then boyfriend, now husband, pick out the perfect engagement ring. Before the wedding, we traveled back to Chicago for our wedding bands and they, too, are beautiful!
These folks are just professionals - they have a phenomenal selection and very competitive pricing.
