My husband and I planned to host a small luncheon (32 people) following our wedding ceremony. Because the attendee count was under 40, we thought the best/easiest course of action would be to rent a private room in a nice restaurant. When we learned Old Anglers Inn hosted events, we decided it would be the perfect spot for our reception. WRONG!
I’m from MD but currently live in Denver, so my parents acted as “boots on the ground.” They offered to meet with Hasina, the Events Manager, and tour the available private rooms. After submitting the event request form on May 5th, Hasina and I set up a phone call for the following week to discuss details. When she didn’t call me at the scheduled time, I called her. No one answered and I left a voicemail. When no one called back, I sent an email letting Hasina know that my parents would be coming to OAI for lunch the next day. When my parents got to the restaurant, they were told that Hasina was “in Greece but should be back within the next 2 weeks.” After explaining why they were there, someone else, John Reges, offered to give them a tour and answer questions. While John was polite, he didn’t know anything about OAI’s event policy or private rooms and couldn’t answer any questions. Ten days after missing our call, Hasina replied to my email saying she had been out of the country (no apology) but she heard John Reges was able to help my parents. I told her that John couldn’t answer any questions and requested we set up another call. She didn’t reply.
At that point I should have looked for another venue, but my parents liked the food and location, so I submitted another event request form. Hasina reached out, pretending that our previous interactions didn’t happen. When we spoke, I felt better about the situation. Hasina explained that the room I wanted was available on July 12th and emailed me with the different menu options. That was my only productive conversation with her. In the following weeks we exchanged emails about the menu, service, and room setup. I would submit a list of questions, and if Hasina replied she would only answer half of them. In one email I said we wanted to do a champagne toast but asked if they had a sparkling cider available for the guests not drinking alcohol. Hasina replied saying, “Yes, we have Angry Orchard.”
If I called, she wouldn’t answer or call back. I tried calling the restaurant, thinking that because I want to give them money and business they would help. Wrong. The manager I spoke to said, “you have to talk to Hasina. No one else can help.” Two weeks before our big day, I repeatedly asked Hasina to send me a contract. She never asked for a deposit, so I didn’t have any signed/official documentation confirming our event. Five days before the luncheon she emailed the contract and event details. The menu selections were wrong, the anticipated attendee count was wrong, and there were fees that she never previously mentioned. That was the final straw. We lucked out because the restaurant hosting our rehearsal dinner was available for the luncheon. With four days to spare, we switched venues. When I didn’t sign Hasina’s contract, she was suddenly very available to call and email me. I took a page out of her playbook and waited until the day before our wedding to inform her we would not be hosting our event at Old Anglers Inn.
Moral of the story: Regardless of the size, DO NOT use Old Anglers Inn to host your event.
When we moved our August wedding outside, we decided to rent out Old Angler's upper terrace for a small, socially distanced wedding dinner after the ceremony. I am so glad we did, as it turned out to be the perfect choice! The setting was so lush and magical, with all the trees and greenspace and the little bridge over the mini waterfall, I can't wait to see the photos (the video was spectacular). The terrace was just the right size for spacing the small tables far apart, and they included nice table linens and little gold-painted wooden table numbers. And the food was exquisite and service excellent! Everyone seemed to enjoy their food. Having the little bar set up in the gazebo up there also worked out nicely. The prices were also quite reasonable for the set event menus.
The only negatives were that 1) since the event planner is part-time, she couldn't always respond to emails right away (though overall Helen did a great job!); 2) Helen had told us that we could use the bathrooms on the second floor that were single stalls, as part of our rental, but the staff told our guests when asked to use the main one downstairs. (Which were more likely to have other people in them at the same time, and more of a risk with COVID). Also, if you have vendors order off the regular menu, you might want to set some limits. (One of our vendors ordered expensive crab cakes!). But overall it worked out far better than I ever imagined! Thanks again Helen and OAI team.
I had my wedding ceremony and reception at Old Angler's on August 30, 2014. Julian Radice was my contact at the venue and he was extremely accommodating and responsive throughout the planning process. He also served as an on-site 'planner' the day of, making sure that everything went smoothly.
The venue is absolutely gorgeous, and is just up from the Potomac river and well shaded by mature trees. So even in the heat of the summer, the ambient outdoor temperature at OAI was slightly cooler than the general forecast. We had a gorgeous day, and were fortunate enough not to have to tent our event - we were prepared to, if it came to that - but without the tent, the itallian string lights over the beer garden in the back were the perfect backdrop for the reception. There is a stage in the beer garden as well, perfect for a live band - a DJ would work well also of course.
Most noteworthy perhaps other than the enchanting atmosphere was the food. Ever guest commented that the food was outstanding. The best food ever served at a wedding. The chef at Old Angler's prepared a special menu of requests that are not found on the normal menu at the restaurant there. Since the wedding was over labor day weekend, we requested old fashioned favorites and comfort foods such as beef back ribs, brussels sprouts and bacon, mac and cheese, shrimp and vegetable kabobs, fried chicken and waffles (which they substituted with french toast since the kitchen doesn't have a waffle maker - the french toast was amazing!) Every effort was made to accommodate every request we had. They held a tasting for us to give feedback on the food. And I was simply amazed at how delicious this special order items were both at the tasting and the evening of the wedding.
The cost to host ceremony and reception at Old Angler's was a lower-than-hotel minimum food and beverage. We guaranteed a slightly higher minimum so that we had the beer garden for the entire day to set up decorations tables. But overall it was extremely reasonable. I would choose this venue again for any other large gathering!!
