Susan is a lifesaver! I am so glad I found Susan and her team, especially Joan, as I was very hesitant to work with just anyone due to the nature of the dress - vintage with lots of lace and a 6 foot cathedral train!
She made my grandmother's dress from 1953 fit me, and when I first tried it on, I wasn't sure if I would be able to wear it - it wouldn't button in the back and the bust was too high. In addition to the alterations, she also reinforced parts of the vintage dress for future use, which is a comforting thought if it's used for a fourth generation.
Joan, her assistant, was very kind and helpful during all of my fittings. She also helped me carry my things (I had my reception dress altered as well (also vintage)) out to the car at my last fitting - that wedding dress weighed about 25 pounds in the bag!
Wearing my grandmother's dress was one of my priorities, and I'm so glad we were able to make it happen. I wasn't sure if it would work out in the beginning! I was definitely nervous at times, when it didn't button, and especially seeing the dress cut open (!) but Susan assuaged my anxiety about it, and about it fitting! It was slightly too big in some areas (I ended up losing weight during the engagement) so it didn't fit perfectly, but the parts Susan worked on looked amazing! The dress is old and has charm, and it looked wonderful all together! Couldn't have worn it with out her!
The Wedding Dresser team was amazing and did an incredible job, especially since my dress had pleating that didn't make bustling the easiest of jobs. Thank you!
Great quality and attention to detail. Susan and her team made sure my dress fit perfectly and comfortably for the big wedding day. Thankful for your services. But the pricing was way more expensive than I expected... I spent close to the same amount that my dress cost in total to get it altered here. I realized very late that I should have just had where I bought my dress alter it, but I was too late to make the appointments. Also, this is a place that is training student seamstresses. They were some of the most friendly, helpful, and kind people in this shop. If I am being completely honest, Susan was very rude to every single one of them every time I went into the shop. I would be lying if I said this didn't change the way I felt each time I left the shop. The way you treat others, especially your employees and students, reflects a lot. All in all, thank you for not messing up my dress.
About 2 months ago, I walked into the Wedding Dresser in Industry City with my wedding dress in hand, not knowing what to expect. I was immediately greeted by Tessa, the manager. Tessa helped set up my initial appointment as well as my 3 additional appointments leading up to my big day.
As I unzipped my 2 piece Carol Hannah original wedding dress from its carrier, I was pleasantly greeted by head seamstress Aqua LoPresti. Within my initial appointment, it became so clear that Aqua LoPresti is a master of her craft. They demonstrated an impressive range of skills including altering the corset, which was full of boning. Aqua made me feel so comfortable, heard, and seen with her magical-positive presence. Aqua, your passion and purpose really shined through to me with each appointment. The owner Susan definitely knows how to curate an experience.
I chose these candid shots of my wedding dress to upload to show how the artistry of Susan and her team, specifically Aqua for tailoring my wedding dress to fit me perfectly. I am a 40-DD. Aqua crafted my Carol Hannah corset and linen skirt to fit my body. I could dance and move around with ease and with confidence knowing that there would be no slips. I highly recommend the Wedding Dresser for all your alteration needs, especially for mid-size and plus-size women. I can’t wait to take my wedding skirt back to them so they can alter it again to make it an everyday skirt to wear. Thank you Wedding Dresser.
The wedding dresser was a life saver! They tailored my particularly difficult-to-tailor afterparty dress with no problem at all. Would definitely recommend!
Susan and her team are outstanding! I am so glad I chose them to alter my wedding dress. My dress was quite complicated and needed a lot of alterations, and there were able to complete them beautifully with just 4 fittings, each less than 30 minutes. The bustle they created was beautiful, and they even made a very clear explanatory video for my sister-in-law to do the bustle herself on the wedding day.
Two weeks before my wedding, at my final fitting, my dress was still a bit big on the top, but Susan and her team were able to work quickly at the last minute to make sure I had a perfect fit for my wedding day.
Susan was able to take my family’s 75 year old heirloom dress and give it new life! She did an extraordinary job! She was able to clean the fabric and adjust it so that I could fit into it. It was so special to be able to wear my grandmother/mother’s dress on my wedding day. Thank you to Susan and your entire team for giving me something so special to wear!
I can't recommend working with the Wedding Dresser team enough. They were professional and so knowledgable, and they ensured my dress was absolutely perfect. They spent the time to get my hem exactly right (down to an 1/8 inch!) and shared in my excitement for my wedding day. If you're looking for an amazing seamstress, look no further!
They made my dream dress come to life! I had ordered online sight unseen in a standard size and wasn't sure it would work out in real life. When it arrived it needed some definite refinement before it went down the aisle. The team at the Wedding Dresser knew how to fix all my pain points (top too big, too hard to walk in, fixing the raw hem) and also identified a few things that would make it look better that I hadn't noticed (fixing some uneven pleating in the skirt.) For some reason I did have to remind them twice that we had agreed to fix the hem but they gave me a discount as a result. Definitely recommend!
Susan and her team did a great job of revitalizing my mom's 1980's wedding dress into something more modern, that fit me and garnered tons of compliments at my wedding. They were patient with me for multiple fittings and flexible on timing. I highly recommend them.
Susan and her team at the Wedding Dresser did a lovely job with alterations to my bridal gown (hemming, bustling, and straps). They also offered my expert guidance about cleaning, and I was able to try on accessories to help decide on my final look. My dress fit like a glove, and I was able to dance without hesitation - everything stayed secure. Thank you for helping make our wedding wonderful!
Long story short, the bridal shop I ordered my dress from in Korea sent me the wrong bride’s dress (I’m a size 2 and they sent me a size 10) and had to put in a rush order with the designer to create a brand new dress for me. Less than a month before my wedding, I still didn’t have my wedding dress in hand.
I was in full panic mode because I didn’t know 1) was my new dress going to arrive on time? 2) was my new dress going to fit me? 3) was my new dress going to require alterations? 4) would the alterations be completed in time?? There were so many unknowns.
But thanks to my wedding planner’s recommendation, I found the Wedding Dresser, and reached out to Susan. Her response was “Yes, it’s totally possible for us to alter the dress for you on a shortened timeline. We got you” and I already felt a huge sense of relief.
THANK GOD my new dress did arrive in time, 3 weeks before my wedding, and I was able to book an appt with the Wedding Dresser right away.
And in exactly 2 weeks from my first appointment, Susan and her team made my dress fit me PERFECTLY.
They worked their magic to make sure…
- I can actually lift my arms up and hug my husband! LOL (Previously, I couldn’t lift my arms up beyond a few inches)
- The length of the dress was perfect. (I didn’t bustle my dress but it required hemming in the front)
- I could breathe in my dress without it suffocating me (The new dress did fit me, but I didn’t think I could stay in it for hours because it was so tight. They removed the inner corset and did some other things to add some extra breathing room for me and it was a lifesaver!)
At every single appointment, I felt so well taken care of by everyone. Ashley, Gala, Tran, Filbert, and Susan were all so wonderful, and I appreciated how it felt like we were part of a team with one goal in mind: making me look & feel like the most beautiful bride ever.
We actively brainstormed things together (e.g. should I pin the front crease of my dress? should I not? should I wear my hair down? or up? should I bustle my dress? or not?)
I genuinely enjoyed spending time there because everyone is so wonderful.
And honestly, I could not be more grateful to The Wedding Dresser for helping me wear my dream wedding dress on my special day.
Thank you Susan and team!!❤️
Very pricey but so worth it! They made sure my dress looked absolutely perfect. Highly recommend.
I’m so glad I found Susan and her team. I purchased an Oscar de la Renta Brandon wedding gown, which needed to be taken in. As the gown was expensive, I wanted someone experienced so I wouldn’t have to worry about the outcome. Susan and her team were just excellent. I had the initial contact with Susan through Zoom, where we discussed all the particulars, e.g. timing, cost, number of visits etc. Susan was extremely helpful, putting me at ease and answering all my questions. I think the price I paid for the alterations was fair, especially considering all the layers and the intricate lace. I had reminders for all my visits and was never left waiting.
All the visits went according to plan and I left with a beautiful wedding gown, which fitted like a glove. Everyone at Susan’s shop was always very nice and helpful. I had such a nice experience, I have decided to come back during winter time with some of my vintage gowns.
I cannot say enough about how wonderful my experience was at the Wedding Dresser! I postponed my wedding until next year but then decided somewhat last minute to still get married in a small park ceremony. I purchased a gown that needed to be taken up significantly but had beading and embroidery details in the areas that would be altered. I also needed the dress taken out a bit. The work they did was absolutely amazing! I couldn't be happier with the outcome. They were incredibly kind, quick and accommodating throughout the process!
Susan was incredible to work with. With each dress fitting, I felt more confident that I had chosen the right dress and the right person to make it fit spectacular. I had three dress fittings. The entire staff was extremely professional and responsive. I had to change one of the appointments at the last minute, and she was very flexible. The final result came out better than I could have ever imagined.
I was referred to Susan by one of my good friends, and she was worth every penny. I brought in a simple wedding gown that I needed altered and wanted to add a little something extra too, and we created the perfect overskirt that was exactly what I had in my head. She is patient, listens to your requests, and will do whatever she can to give you a perfect product. Keep Susan in mind for all of your alterations needs!
I had a great experience with Susan and her team. My alterations were fairly straightforward, I just needed to have the straps adjusted and the hem taken up on my dress. Susan and her team were always responsive, professional, and kind during every appointment. I highly recommend them.
I had Susan and the team alter my wedding dress. They did a wonderful job and my lace dress fit like a glove. They added a great bustle so I could easily dance the night away as well as cups and pulled my neckline up a bit. They were easy to work with and my dress was done in a few weeks time.
The Wedding Dresser team did an incredible job altering my dress and were lovely to work with! My dress was a sample and needed some minor adjustments, and by my final fitting with Susan and Schuyler it fit perfectly. They were so flexible and listened to my concerns, offering suggestions and styling ideas. Tressa was really helpful in scheduling follow-up fittings and finding time in their calendar, especially in the weeks leading up to the wedding which I really appreciated. One thing that sets The Wedding Dresser apart are the accessories they offer in-house, and the option to try out different accessories during fitting appointments with your dress and getting a second opinion. I ended up choosing one of their cathedral veils which worked perfectly! The only snag I experienced was my bustle breaking during cocktail hour, but luckily had a friend on hand who easily repaired it. In the grand scheme of things, it was a small issue and other than that, my dress fit like a dream. I'd highly recommend the Wedding Dresser if you're looking for alterations in Brooklyn!
I really enjoyed working with Susan and her team at the Wedding Dresser for my wedding dress alterations. They are all so warm and kind – I felt comfortable right from the start. Having bought a sample gown at a non-traditional store, I initially felt like I was missing that special, personal attention that one finds at a traditional wedding boutique. Upon entering the Wedding Dresser studio for the first time, I knew I had found a place where I would get that experience. Skylar created a beautiful bustle for my gown, and I also had it taken in, hemmed, and buttons added down the back. In addition, they arranged for my dress to be cleaned and pressed before the wedding meaning I didn’t have to worry about that myself. Plus, their pricing is extremely competitive. I highly recommend the Wedding Dresser!
Wonderful and knowledgeable team who was able to work with my tight timeline and transformed a tricky sample dress into the gown of my dreams! It looked stunning, and I can't have imagined wearing anything else. Great communicators and excellent quality of work.
Bonus points that Susan hails from the theater world, originally, like I do--loved being able to swap stories from our adventures in the biz.
I am so thankful I went to the Wedding Dresser for my alterations and all my styling!
Susan and her team were attentive, thorough and detailed. Susan is definitely an expert and she and her team exude professionalism and experience. My dress was the Cassia from BHLDN and was loaded with tulle - they helped guide me through a bustle that worked wonders and did not look unattractive as some bustles can! It looked beautiful and she altered the dress to perfection! The dress fit me like a glove and Susan was able to keep in tune with my weight loss leading up the wedding so that when the day came, I fit in perfectly. Everyone said my dress was a dream and I believe that is because the talented and experienced TWD team took care of my alterations. My dress had a ton of intricate and delicate beading and Susan and her team handled it with ease. Special shout out to Schuyler who was so nice and helpful - and obviously talented at what he does too!
Now on to my accessories, I was feeling a bit lost about my belt and headpiece before meeting with Susan and her team. Isis was a dream in helping me choose the perfect ones. I wanted to see just about every single one in store and she was incredibly patient with me and my particular vision. :) I ended choosing a beautiful belt made in house (Soleil with ivory ribbon) and the perfect headpiece for my magical day.
Tressa’s customer service was top notch and I was excited to come back for each fitting and then come to get my dress cleaned and preserved after the fact. I definitely recommend Susan and team for any bride who needs some TLC when it comes to her dress and styling for her big day! Thanks so much TWD!!!
I wore my mom's dress from her wedding. The dress fit me pretty well, but after sitting in my mom's closet for more than 20 years, it needed some work. It was a bit wrinkled and needed a good cleaning. Some things needed to be fixed and there were some minor alterations it needed. After 3 fittings with Susan, the dress fit me perfect like it was made for me! the dry cleaning got out stains from 20 years ago, and all the wrinkles were gone.
I bought my dress on the clearance rack at a warehouse. Its a beautiful Maggie Sottero dress but there was a lot to be altered, adjusted and cleaned up. The dress had very intricate beading and lace throughout so it was not an easy job. Susan and her team transformed it - and at an affordable price! From the very first appointment, she was straightforward and precise, while also comforting and anxious bride to be. Her entire team was always professional, accommodating, and listened to my needs. I will be recommending her to all of my friends and family!!
I fell in love with a BHLDN dress online and snapped it up when it came back to their site in my size only - then I crossed my fingers. It arrived, as lovely as I imagined, but as a larger-busted bride, the delicate and fairly unsupportive dress needed some work to make it support and flatter my body. I was terrified that alterations would destroy a dress so gossamer and perfect I never tried on another, so I knew the wedding alterations team I chose would have to be a great one.
I did my research. LOTS OF IT. And again and again, Susan and her team were it. Susan’s theater experience, and decades of bridal expertise mean she knows any garment, any age, all body types, inside and out. This was a woman who would respect and understand a beautiful dress, and find a way to make it work. I went to her original space for my first fitting - a tulle, ostrich, rhinestone wonderland - and could tell immediately that my experience would go perfectly. She developed a plan to attach a detachable low-backed corset, brought the delicate tulle boatneck laid flat against my sternum, and tried on a few veil options with an antique crown I had boat. My next two appointments in her new Industry City space saw Susan expertly fit my gorgeous dress to me - as well as my mom’s, and my bridesmaid’s dresses - they each have different body types to mine, and had dresses that were long and covered in intricate beading and sequins. My mom was also able to purchase a few hairpins from her accessories line, which helped make the process even easier. I heard again and again how lovely and unusual my dress was, and it looks PERFECT in our photos.
I recommended her to two very different style and body type brides with very different dresses, and they had experiences that were just as positive as mine.
I got married this past weekend and was thrilled with my experience with Susan and everyone else at The Wedding Dresser. My alterations were perfect and fitted exactly to me. They were so helpful and accommodating. I fully trusted Susan's expertise and have recommended friends to her.
I bought my dress online and had it custom sized, so I had done a pretty good job at getting it to fit well on my body. When I brought it here to get altered, I needed to take in the chest, add straps, and add a bustle. Susan and her team were very helpful and did a great job with my alterations. I had minimal work done to the dress, so bringing it in for the first time 12 weeks before the wedding during the off-season was plenty of time to get all the alterations done. Susan also suggested I rent a short fur shawl for the photos since the weather was cooler for my autumn wedding. I ended up spending more money on the alterations than I did on the dress, but I knew I would have a hard time finding a dress to fit my petite frame and larger chest, and Susan did a great job perfecting my dress.
I found my perfect dress at BHLDN. Since they don't do in-house alterations and the vendors they referred me to in Manhattan were uber expensive, I had to do a little research. I did a quick google search and found a NYTimes article about Susan and as luck would have it, she's located one neighborhood away from me in Brooklyn. I didn't need anything major done, just adding a bustle and shortening the length a bit, but the dress is all lace so getting it right was very important. She did a great job and even took a video with instructions on how to bustle since my maid of honor could not be at the final fitting. Additionally, she talked me through some of the stress I was feeling over all the planning and I left not only feeling great about my dress, but also feeling much calmer. My wedding was in October and the dress fit perfectly. I'm a bridesmaid in my cousin's wedding next year so I will be returning to her in the spring for my bridesmaid dress alterations.
I was introduced to Susan by my wedding planner. I wanted a dresser to help me get ready on the big day and to help my parents and my large bridal party with any wardrobe issues. This was one of the best wedding decisions I made because Susan gave me the wonderful Stacie as my stylist. I don’t know what I would have done without her. She prepped my dress, helped my parents and maids of honor get ready and she even helped place my dress during pictures (my photographer loved her!) We did a first look and photos before the actual ceremony and Stacie made sure we all looked just as fresh as we did earlier in the day. She was such a savior and I am so thankful to have had her with me on my big day.
Susan is The Wedding Dress Whisperer! With a very impressive background which consisted of costume design, working at Kleinfeld, to owning her own business in an adorable apartment full of wedding inspiration and skilled seamstresses, I couldn't feel more confident that I found the perfect person to alter my wedding dress. Being a fashion designer myself, I knew I needed to be picky, and I'm so glad I was. I can't wait to wear my perfectly fitted dress!
I got my dress from Lovely. As they don't have in-house tailors, I needed to find someone to help with my dress -- and the vendors they recommended were both expensive and located in Manhattan. My mom did some additional research and found Susan. After reading the New York Times article about her, we decided she would likely be a good fit.
I was expecting to just be hiring a tailor, but in the end Susan also ended up supplying most of my accessories as well. She custom-made my cathedral-length veil with blusher (for half the price I was prepared to pay at Lovely); I also bought my hairpiece there, a pair of vintage crystal earrings, and, in a last-minute decision, a pair of long gloves. It was much more convenient to be able to pick out accessories with the dress, and overall her accessories were just as elegant, if not more so, than those at the fancy wedding boutiques at half the price.
My gown was form-fitting, so it required a lot of work in terms of alterations. Susan and her team did a great job in fitting it to my body and making some last-minute switches after some wedding-stress-related weight loss. She also set up the dress's bustle, and showed me how to walk in the dress (which was a challenge in itself!) Overall, it was great to work with Susan and I'd highly recommend her services.
Susan and her staff did a fantastic job with my alternations. I have scoliosis and was wearing a keyhole back dress. I was very nervous about it looking uneven or strange. But they did an excellent job at altering it so it looked perfect. On top of the great work they did on the alterations, Susan was incredibly professional. I actually found her because someone I had for alternations bailed on me unexpectedly. I emailed Susan and she wrote back to me within a few hours with a choice of several appointment times. I was very happy with the experience and totally pleased with the alternations to my dress.
Susan and her team at the wedding dresser did an incredible job on my wedding dress. They made the whole process stress free and fun. The Wedding dresser worked hard on my dress and all of the details that the bustle needed. Susan and her team are easy to communicate with. I have a sample sale dress from Saks that she easily adjusted to my size. She also was so kind and dropped off my dress at a very reliable cleaners for pressing. I have a hectic schedule and Susan was very accommodating of my work hours. I would definitely come back here and might be back soon to dye the top of my dress so I can reuse it.
Susan was a dream to work with. She's the perfect mixture of sweet and no nonsense. With just a few weeks before my wedding, I rushed to her with a custom made gown that was completely botched. She (as well as another seamstress i went to for a second opinion) deemed the dress so poorly constructed that it was unsalvageable. She let me know tactfully and sat down with me to help calm my nerves and search for other options. I ended up buying a dress off the rack which she altered beautifully. Only 2 fittings and done!
Her staff is also talented and kind. She specializes in last minute alterations and her prices are totally reasonable. Booking with her is very easy since her response timing is great and she offers evening and weekend appointments.
I brought my wedding dress for alterations that required taking in the bust on a pleated bodice, hemming a skirt with asymmetrical draping and a french bustle on my cathedral train.
I also found a bracelet and a beautiful hair pin from the accessories which are on display and available for purchase.
The studio is in her home, but there is a separate room for changing and space for your attendants (2) to sit with you during the fittings.
Susan offers a commitment free estimate. She provided a written quote, which she discussed with me line by line.
Susan and her staff are very courteous and professional. She explained in detail the work that was to be done and why it would be done. Her alteration pricing included (3) fittings and everything came out perfect. Susan also did a video tape for me of my bustle and emailed it to me, in case we forgot how to do it.
Susan is great. She is very nice, knowledgeable, professional and accommodating. My dress was very ornate and I felt that she did an awesome job. She does work out of her apartment in Brooklyn, which I was surprised about at first. Overall her service and the advice that she gave me were invaluable.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE SUSAN!! I swear she is my fairy God Mother. She took my beautiful gown and made it even better. I couldn't image having a better fitting dress on my wedding day. She covered all the bases and finished every last touch to make sure everything was just right. My final preparations took place during hurricane Sandy and she was very comforting in the fact that my dress was safe and sound. She even made several trips to my home because the trains were out of service. She is such a kind and generous woman who knows her stuff! I highly recommend her and her team for your wedding dress needs.
Susan and her staff are seriously miracle workers! I ordered a custom dress and when it arrived, I thought it needed minor alterations. I took it to Susan and she pointed out major flaws in the construction of the dress. Then she went the extra mile. She called the maker of the dress to tell them about all of the issues with my dress. The custom dress maker called me the next day, took back my poorly made gown and made me a new dress. When I received my new dress, I took it back to Susan and her team. I was worried that there was not enough time to do the alterations before the wedding, but Susan delivered yet again. I had my dress only 3 short days after giving it to her and it fit perfectly. I danced my tail off at my wedding and never once had to pull up or adjust my dress. Susan also took my maid of honor's measurements and helped her find a dress - at no additional charge. Furthermore, she was straightforward about the alterations that were needed, the time it would take and the price. She even recommended some vendors for other products like undergarments. Susan and her team delivered top-notch alterations service with the most amazing attention to serving clients I have ever experienced.
I bought my dress new from a well known NYC dress shop, who took good care of me in terms of finding the perfect dress for me. However, when it came time to talk about how I wanted to alter the dress, they soon became unsure of their abilities to cut the train off and make my dress a flowing ball gown as I pictured. With that I still bought the dress at the shop but then searched for the best wedding seamstress on line. Susan, from The Wedding Dresser was amazing. She handled our entire party and we all felt as though we were perfectly fit in our dresses on the big day! I would HIGHLY recommend Susan and her team!
I worked with Susan to alter both the hemline and neckline of my dress, and to create a bustle. She was professional and effiicent and also offered great advice for my wedding day, including teaching my family how to bustle my dress ;)
