Sauk Valley Resort is a very charming venue. It has a romantic ceremony space which surrounds you with windows and a view of the field of grass outside. The carpet, among other things, are a bit outdated, but I think it added extra charm.
The food was good for the price. Nothing fancy but the entrees were enjoyable.
Even though it was September, we have pictures of our guests sweating with no air conditioning in the building. This could have been a deal breaker for us if we had known how bad it would be. The bridal room was pretty spacious with an air conditioning unit and restroom (but bring your own paper towels). The guys had a tiny room with no air and I felt bad for them that we didn't know beforehand.
It was great being able to decorate the day before, and the owner was nice about letting us visit several times during the course of planning. However I do wish we had the option to get ready at the venue. We weren't allowed in until two hours before the ceremony, and I'm sure they have their reasons for this, but it's just something to keep in mind especially if you plan to take pictures beforehand.
In summary, it's cute and we had a really hard time finding anything else in the area that fir the rustic category and was under $2k. Just have your wedding when it's cold.
Pros:
You can setup/decorate the day before your event, and clean-up the day after. Spacious inside, beautiful property/scenery outside. You can provide everything except for food, you have to use their catering. (the food is actually ok!). The pricing is reasonable compared to most places in the surrounding area.
Cons:
NO Air Conditioning! = VERY uncomfortable and hot in the summer months. The venue is split for 2 floors, the main floor is for eating, the 2nd floor is for dancing/drinking/mingling. It's not handicap accessible from the 1st floor to 2nd, unless you drive up behind the back of the building and use the back entrance. No handicap stalls in bathroom, VERY small. Very musty smelling. Definitely could use a lot of cosmetic updates such as carpeting, seating, light/ceiling fan fixtures, etc. They don't offer overnight accommodations in their "dormitories" or main lodge anymore. As of June 2015, their website isn't updated to reflect that.
This was my dream venue come true. I couldn't believe how beautiful the land was and how unique the venue itself was. I did not want to have the typical "hotel banquet room" wedding, and I achieved that! Flexibility of the owners was great, I could bring in whatever I wanted other than main course meal, go see the venue whenever I wanted, and email/phone calls were answered quickly, I had a lot of them! Price was unbeatable, a little updating wouldn't hurt, but it added charm:) It is a very big area and a little hard to find, but if you're familiar with the area or are looking for something different with character this is your place. I couldn't have asked for a better wedding venue or hill surrounded by trees to say I do!
Our wedding was absolutely wonderful, but the professionalism of the owners at Sauk Valley was lacking at times. We booked four rooms for our guests to stay in and none of the rooms had bedding on them. They thought we would bring our own at $100 a room. We also had to clean up our own tables because we didn't use their table settings, which was fine minus the fact that they had two trash cans located outside for us to put our plates in and no other places. We were able to clean up the next morning, but no one was around to talk to about what are duties were as far as clean up and when we tried calling no one answered either. We couldn't have asked for a better wedding, but I will say we were disappointed in the management "over relaxed state."
Sauk Valley Resort was amazing. The owner was so friendly, helpful and very professional. I loved that we were able to come in on Friday and set up and not have to take down until Sunday. The food was great and I loved that there was two levels along with two bars.
The food at Sauk Valley was great. They give you a good variety of things to pick from on the menu. The presentation is wonderful as well. They always made sure everything was full and fresh.
