Used them for a wedding shower and it was the worst looking and worst tasting food I have ever experienced. When I wrote them to complain and say I would never use or recommend them ever again, they didn't bother to respond.
Schaal's Catering did an awesome job at our wedding. The food was delicious and the service was great. We received several compliments from our guests regarding the quality of the food. We would highly recommend them.
We had a morning wedding on a glorious fall Sunday in October. We wanted to do something a little different and ended doing heavy hors d'oeuvres with brunch elements. Sweet Potato Turkey biscuits, sausage rolls, yogurt, granola, fruit, cheddar grits with shrimp and so many other amazing items. Our guests just loved the food! We also had our wedding at their property The Kyle House and it was awesome. ( Note: if you are looking for that rustic vibe but you aren't DIY creative check out The Kyle House it comes already decorated and has that rustic romantic charm. The chapel next door where ceremony happens is a magical place as well!)Guests loved loved loved the venue and food. Jim and Amanda were so helpful and kind. Make sure you know what you want though! Jim is very professional but has his ideas about what should/would work. So either go prepared with all ideas or be open to hearing what could be done differently. They helped us work out our timelines and made sure their staff was on the same page with what we wanted. I could reach Amanda at any time by email. She was on the ball with emails and phone calls. Overall the wedding was perfect and we couldn't be happier.
I booked Schaal's catering for my wedding in July. I had heard great things about them, and I was very pleased that Jim Schaal was able to work with me and my tight budget. We decided on heavy hors d'oeuvres since the reception was scheduled for later in the evening. Jim was incredibly helpful even before we officially signed a contract. He recommended a photographer for us, he gave us some tips about timing of our wedding, and he tried to help us save money on things that we hadn't thought about before. Something really nice about Schaal's is that they offer their own linens for rental for only $10 per linen (this is only to pay for cleaning). If you don't know much about wedding planning, this is a great deal! It was also nice to not have to worry about an additional vendor; it was included in my catering. For the most part, everything was wonderful! The food was good; the shrimp and grits was absolutely AWESOME (a fan favorite!), and there was plenty of food even though it was just heavy hors d'oeuvres. The staff was very attentive, and the bar tender did a great job! We had decided to add these little chicken and waffle skewers to our menu because 1) we love chicken and waffles and 2) we thought it would be a unique touch for our wedding. However, they were disappointing. They were dry and cold when they came out. Overall, everything was wonderful; we were just a little disappointed by this little detail. I also gave four out of five stars on responsiveness because there were times when I had a hard time getting some questions answered via email. They were answered eventually, and everything worked out, but I felt that it was worth mentioning. So, overall, everything ran smoothly, the food was good, and the staff was courteous and professional. I appreciate Schaal's willingness to work within our tight budget and putting out a good product.
Schaal's was definitely above what I wanted to spend for a caterer, but after sampling the food, I was hooked. Their food is amazingly good and their staff is very professional and wonderful to work with. I've had many of my guests come back to me to tell me that the food at my wedding was the best catered food that they've had. I also really appreciated how it was almost as important to the Schaal's staff that the food look good and be properly arranged as the taste.
I used Schaal's for both my rehearsal dinner and reception. The food was great and I heard rave reviews from my guests. The servers and my banquet coordinator were all wonderful!
Jim is fantastic. Truly a master of his art. Great attention to detail, fabulous presentation, and amazing taste. He is simply the best in town.
Jim's attention to detail is impecable. His attentive staff and fantastic food make him the best choice for any event.
The food was amazing! It looked beautiful and tasted even better! It was perfect!
Jim Schaal and his staff did a fabulous job at my daughter's wedding(and Amanda too). I did not try to impress my guests but Schaal made it so special and magical from the great food to the beautiful linens. And now everyone is talking and saying that it was the best wedding they have ever been to. And it made me look like I had given a really special event -THANKS JIM
Our daughter's wedding was this past Saturday and we held both the wedding and the reception at Kyle House in Fincastle, Va. The dinner was catered by Jim Schaal of Schaal's Events and Catering, and we couldn't be more pleased! This was his first seated dinner at Kyle House. Normally he prefers "stations"..but on this the bride and groom were adamant. They did not want older guests to stand in line for anything.
I can only say that I sincerely hope ours wasn't his last dinner of this type at Kyle House. The food was absolutely delicious...and served still hot! The filet and sea bass were done to perfection. I don't know how you do that when serving over 100 guests...but Schaal did it!
The wait staff were totally professional and a pleasure to work with. I would no sooner think of something I wanted, and magically there it was!
Jim Schaal was very accommodating to us throughout the planning and execution, and things couldn't have been any better or run any smoother.
I would highly recommend this caterer.
My experience may be different from other brides because Jim let me know the week of the wedding that he and his wife would be out of town, so one of his staff members would be handling our reception. My hesitation to write this review is because I feel like some of the things that were "wrong" are my responsibility because I did not insist that we have everything in writing. Jim is very laidback, which I really liked, but unfortunately that means that he told us things would be a certain way, but since we didn't have a DETAILED written contract, they didn't end up how he told us. Example: Jim told us the centerpieces (which are included in the price- wonderful!) would be tall trumpet glass vases with fall-themed decor inside. He even showed them to us when we initially met with him. Instead however we had short square vases with fresh flowers. They were nice, but not what we had discussed or been shown. I also had some complaints about the food being cold on occasion when it was brought out. For the most part the food was EXCELLENT though, and really wonderful for the price paid. Lastly, we paid for "heavy hors d'oeuvres" and an "action station". I was under the impression that an "action station" would me slightly heavier food, hot and being prepared by a staff member at the station. There was no action station, but again, I'm not sure if that's just a misunderstanding on my part and my own fault for not having it clarified on a detailed written contract.
Overall, I would highly recommend Jim Schaal and Metamorphosis, especially compared to other options in Roanoke. I would just suggest that you get everything written down in the contract. Jim is a good salesman when he talks, but I'm not sure that what he promises always gets translated to the staff or onto paper.
Working with Jim Schaal was a great experience. I gave him an idea of the kind of food I liked and the budget I had in mind, and he came back with a range of options. He was happy to work with us to take away menu items that didn't sound so good to us and replace them with things we loved. The presentation the day of was beautiful, and the food delicious. We used Schaal's Metamorphosis venue, which was gorgeous. Jim worked with us to set the place up in a way that worked best for us, and was very flexible on seating. Also, he provided us with some excellent recommendations for other vendors. The lack of plus plus was a huge bonus, and working with Jim was a pleasure. His pricing structure for alcohol was the best we found. I think I talked to him every day the week of our wedding. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for delicious food at a reasonable price.
Schaal's did an excellent job on the day of, the food tasted great and was displayed beautifully. They paid close attention to detail and offered great suggestions during the planning process. Unfortunately due to an email mix up I was not very informed during the planning process and things were left the to the last minute. Not ideal when planning a wedding in 7 months. I suggest approaching Jim with exactly what you won't/don't want so you dont get sucked into his ideas that will most likely blow your budget. Also make sure you ask for them to save you a box of food since you will likely not eat anything during your reception! : )
The food was great. Jim and Amanda Schaal are so easy to work with. They go out of their way to make sure your needs are met. The only constructive criticism I could give would be to have the food labeled at the reception and several times when the guest went to make a plate they couldn't find a plate or silverware and had to wait. ( The food was awesome but gourmet and not everybody knew what things were by looking at it, so a lot of guest told me days later they weren't sure what things were so they didn't eat it... example they made these awesome mini beef wellingtons but it just looked like a pastry puff sitting on the table.)
